Praise God Who Satisfies
A psalm of David. When he was in the Wilderness of Judah.(A)
1 God, you are my God; I eagerly seek you.
I thirst for you;
my body faints for you
in a land that is dry, desolate, and without water.(B)
2 So I gaze on you in the sanctuary
to see your strength and your glory.(C)
3 My lips will glorify you
because your faithful love is better than life.(D)
4 So I will bless you as long as I live;
at your name, I will lift up my hands.(E)
5 You satisfy me as with rich food;[a](F)
my mouth will praise you with joyful lips.(G)
Psalm 98
Praise the King
A psalm.
1 Sing a new song to the Lord,(A)
for he has performed wonders;
his right hand and holy arm
have won him victory.(B)
2 The Lord has made his victory known;
he has revealed his righteousness
in the sight of the nations.(C)
3 He has remembered his love
and faithfulness to the house of Israel;
all the ends of the earth
have seen our God’s victory.(D)
Psalm 103
The Forgiving God
Of David.
1 My soul, bless the Lord,
and all that is within me, bless his holy name.(A)
2 My soul, bless the Lord,
and do not forget all his benefits.(B)
3 He forgives all your iniquity;(C)
he heals all your diseases.(D)
4 He redeems your life from the Pit;(E)
he crowns you with faithful love and compassion.(F)
5 He satisfies you[a] with good things;(G)
your youth is renewed like the eagle.(H)
6 The Lord executes acts of righteousness
and justice for all the oppressed.(I)
7 He revealed his ways to Moses,(J)
his deeds to the people of Israel.(K)
8 The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
slow to anger and abounding in faithful love.(L)
9 He will not always accuse us
or be angry forever.(M)
10 He has not dealt with us as our sins deserve
or repaid us according to our iniquities.(N)
11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
so great is his faithful love
toward those who fear him.(O)
12 As far as the east is from the west,
so far has he removed
our transgressions from us.(P)
13 As a father has compassion on his children,
so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.(Q)
14 For he knows what we are made of,
remembering that we are dust.(R)
15 As for man, his days are like grass—
he blooms like a flower of the field;(S)
16 when the wind passes over it, it vanishes,
and its place is no longer known.[b](T)
17 But from eternity to eternity
the Lord’s faithful love is toward those who fear him,
and his righteousness toward the grandchildren(U)
18 of those who keep his covenant,
who remember to observe his precepts.(V)
19 The Lord has established his throne in heaven,
and his kingdom rules over all.(W)
Command to Rebuild the Temple
1 In the second year of King Darius,[a](A) on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the Lord came through the prophet(B) Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel,(C) the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:(D)
2 “The Lord of Armies says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the Lord to be rebuilt.”(E)
3 The word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 4 “Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses,(F) while this house[b] lies in ruins?” 5 Now, the Lord of Armies says this: “Think carefully(G) about[c] your ways:
6 You have planted much
but harvested little.
You eat
but never have enough to be satisfied.
You drink
but never have enough to be happy.
You put on clothes
but never have enough to get warm.
The wage earner puts his wages
into a bag with a hole in it.”(H)
7 The Lord of Armies says this: “Think carefully about your ways. 8 Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house; and I will be pleased with it and be glorified,” says the Lord. 9 “You expected much, but then it amounted to little. When you brought the harvest to your house, I ruined[d] it. Why?” This is the declaration of the Lord of Armies. “Because my house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.
10 So on your account,[e]
the skies have withheld the dew
and the land its crops.(I)
11 I have summoned a drought
on the fields and the hills,
on the grain, new wine, fresh oil,
and whatever the ground yields,
on people and animals,
and on all that your hands produce.”
The People’s Response
12 Then Zerubbabel(J) son of Shealtiel, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the entire remnant of the people(K) obeyed the Lord their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the Lord their God had sent him. So the people feared the Lord.(L)
13 Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, delivered the Lord’s message to the people: “I am with you(M)—this is the Lord’s declaration.”
14 The Lord roused the spirit(N) of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the spirit of the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the spirit of all the remnant of the people. They began work on the house of the Lord of Armies, their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
Encouragement and Promise
2 On the twenty-first day of the seventh month,(O) the word of the Lord came through the prophet Haggai: 2 “Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people: 3 ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Doesn’t it seem to you like nothing by comparison?(P) 4 Even so, be strong, Zerubbabel—this is the Lord’s declaration.(Q) Be strong, Joshua son of Jehozadak, high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land—this is the Lord’s declaration. Work! For I am with you(R)—the declaration of the Lord of Armies. 5 This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt,(S) and my Spirit is present among you; don’t be afraid.’”
6 For the Lord of Armies says this: “Once more, in a little while, I am going to shake the heavens and the earth,(T) the sea and the dry land.(U) 7 I will shake all the nations so that the treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this house with glory,”(V) says the Lord of Armies. 8 “The silver and gold belong to me”—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies. 9 “The final glory of this house[f] will be greater than the first,”(W) says the Lord of Armies. “I will provide peace in this place”(X)—this is the declaration of the Lord of Armies.
The Eloquent Apollos
24 Now a Jew named Apollos,(A) a native Alexandrian, an eloquent man who was competent in the use of the Scriptures, arrived in Ephesus. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit,[a] he was speaking and teaching accurately about Jesus, although he knew only John’s baptism.(B) 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. After Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside[b] and explained the way of God to him more accurately.(C) 27 When he wanted to cross over to Achaia, the brothers and sisters wrote to the disciples to welcome him. After he arrived, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed.(D) 28 For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public, demonstrating through the Scriptures that Jesus is the Messiah.(E)
Twelve Disciples of John the Baptist
19 While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul traveled through the interior regions and came to Ephesus. He found some disciples(F) 2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” (G)
“No,” they told him, “we haven’t even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”(H)
3 “Into what then were you baptized?” he asked them.
“Into John’s baptism,” they replied.(I)
4 Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance,(J) telling the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”(K)
5 When they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 And when Paul had laid his hands on(L) them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began to speak in tongues[c] and to prophesy.(M) 7 Now there were about twelve men in all.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 Then(A) an expert in the law(B) stood up to test(C) him, saying, “Teacher,(D) what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (E)
26 “What is written in the law?” he asked him. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered, “Love the Lord your God(F) with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,”(G) and “your neighbor as yourself.”[a](H)
28 “You’ve answered correctly,” he told him. “Do this and you will live.”(I)
29 But wanting to justify himself,(J) he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” (K)
30 Jesus took up the question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him up, and fled, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down that road. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 In the same way, a Levite, when he arrived at the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan(L) on his journey came up to him, and when he saw the man, he had compassion.(M) 34 He went over to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on olive oil(N) and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day[b] he took out two denarii,[c] gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him. When I come back I’ll reimburse you for whatever extra you spend.’
36 “Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?”
37 “The one who showed mercy(O) to him,” he said.
Then Jesus told him, “Go and do the same.”
