Psalm 146-147

Praise to Yahweh for His Help

146 Praise Yah.[a]
Praise Yahweh, O my soul.
I will praise Yahweh while I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I am still alive.
Do not place trust in princes,
in a son of humankind with whom there is no deliverance.
His breath departs; he returns to his plot;[b]
on that day his plans perish.
Blessed is the one whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is on Yahweh as his God,
who made heaven and earth,
the sea and all that is in them,
the one who keeps faith[c] forever,
who executes justice for the oppressed,
who gives food for the hungry.
Yahweh sets prisoners free;
Yahweh opens the eyes of the blind;
Yahweh raises up those bowed down;
Yahweh loves the righteous;
Yahweh protects[d] the strangers.
He helps up the orphan and the widow,
but the way of the wicked he thwarts.[e]
10 Yahweh will reign forever,
Your God, O Zion, throughout all generations.[f]
Praise Yah.[g]

Praise to Yahweh for His Providence

147 Praise Yah.[h]
For it is good to sing praises to our God;
for it is pleasant; praise is fitting.
Yahweh is building Jerusalem;
he gathers the scattered ones of Israel.
He is the one who heals the brokenhearted,
and binds up their wounds.
He counts the number of the stars;
he gives names to all of them.
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power;
his understanding is unlimited.
Yahweh helps the afflicted up;
he brings the wicked down to the ground.
Sing to Yahweh with thanksgiving;
sing praises to our God with lyre,
who covers the heavens with clouds,
who provides rain for the earth,
who causes grass to grow on the mountains.
He gives to the animal its food,
and to the young ravens that cry.
10 He does not delight in the strength of the horse;
he takes no pleasure in the legs of the man.
11 Yahweh takes pleasure in those who fear him,
the ones who hope[i] for his loyal love.
12 Laud Yahweh, O Jerusalem;
praise your God, O Zion,
13 for he strengthens the bars of your gates.
He blesses your children within you;
14 he makes your border peaceful;
he satisfies you with the finest of wheat.[j]
15 He sends out his command[k] to the earth;
his word runs swiftly.
16 He gives snow like wool;
he scatters frost like ashes;
17 he throws his hail like crumbs.
Who can stand before his cold?[l]
18 He sends out his word and melts them;
he blows his breath, the water flows.
19 He declares his word to Jacob,
his statutes and his ordinances to Israel.
20 He has not done so for any nation,
and they do not know his ordinances.
Praise Yah.[m]

Psalm 111-113

Praise to God for His Work and Commands

111 Praise Yah![a]
I will give thanks to Yahweh with all my heart,
in the assembly of the upright and the congregation.
The works of Yahweh are great,
studied[b] by all who delight in them.
Full of splendor and majesty is his work,
and his righteousness endures forever.
He has made his wonders to be remembered;[c]
Yahweh is gracious and compassionate.
He gives food to those who fear him;
he remembers his covenant forever.
He has declared the power of his works for his people,
by giving to them the inheritance of the nations.
The works of his hands are faithfulness and justice;
all his precepts are reliable.
They are sustained forever and ever,
done with faithfulness and uprightness.
He has sent redemption to his people;
he has commanded his covenant forever;
holy and fearful is his name.
10 The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of wisdom;
all who do them[d] have a good understanding.
His praise endures forever.

The Path of the Righteous and the Path of the Wicked

112 Praise Yah![e]
Blessed is the man who fears Yahweh;
he takes great delight in his commands.
His descendants[f] will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will be blessed.
Wealth and riches are in his house,
and his righteousness endures forever.
His light rises in the darkness for the upright;
he is gracious and compassionate and righteous.
It goes well for a man who is gracious and lends,
who conducts his business properly.[g]
For he will not be shaken forever;
the righteous will be remembered forever.[h]
He is not afraid of bad news;
his heart is steadfast, secure[i] in Yahweh.
His heart is sustained; he will not be afraid,
until he looks in triumph on his enemies.
He gives lavishly[j] to the needy;
his righteousness endures forever.
His horn rises high in honor.
10 The wicked[k] sees it and is vexed.
He gnashes his teeth and becomes weak.[l]
The desire of the wicked[m] perishes.

God’s Majesty and Care for the Needy

113 Praise Yah![n]
Praise, O servants of Yahweh,
praise the name of Yahweh.
Let the name of Yahweh be blessed,
from now until forever.
From the rising of the sun to its setting,
let the name of Yahweh be blessed.
Yahweh is high above all nations;
his glory is above the heavens.
Who is like Yahweh our God,
who is enthroned on high,[o]
who condescends to look at[p]
what is in the heavens and in the earth?
He raises the helpless from the dust;
he lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to seat them with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He causes the barren woman of the house to dwell
as the happy mother of children.
Praise Yah![q]

Isaiah 40:1-11

Comfort for God’s People

40 “Comfort; comfort my people,” says your God.

“Speak to the heart of Jerusalem, and call to her,

that her compulsory labor is fulfilled, that her sin is paid for,
    that she has received[a] from the hand of Yahweh double for all her sins.”
A voice is calling in the wilderness, “Clear the way of Yahweh!
    Make a highway smooth in the desert for our God!
Every valley shall be lifted up,
    and every mountain and hill shall become low,
And the rough ground shall be like a plain,
    and the rugged ground like a valley-plain.
And the glory of Yahweh shall be revealed,
    and all humankind[b] together shall see it,

for the mouth of Yahweh has spoken.”

A voice is saying, “Call!”
    And he said, “What shall I call?”
All humankind[c] are grass,
    and all his loyalty is like the flowers of the field.
Grass withers; the flower withers
when the breath of Yahweh blows on it.
    Surely the people are grass.
Grass withers; the flower withers,
    but[d] the word of our God will stand forever.
Get yourself[e] up to a high mountain, Zion, bringer of good news!
    Lift up your voice with strength, Jerusalem, bringer of good news!
Lift it up; you must not fear!
    Say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!”
10 Look! The Lord Yahweh comes with strength,[f]
    and his arm rules for him.
Look! His reward is with him,
    and his recompense in his presence.[g]
11 He will feed his flock like a shepherd;
    he will gather the lambs in his arm,
and he will carry them in his bosom;
    he will lead those who nurse.

Hebrews 1:1-12

God’s Full and Final Revelation in the Son

Although[a] God spoke long ago in many parts[b] and in many ways to the fathers by the prophets, in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the world,[c] who is the radiance of his glory and the representation of his essence, sustaining all things by the word of power.[d] When he[e] had made purification for sins through him, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become by so much better than the angels, by as much as he has inherited a more excellent name than theirs.

The Son Superior to the Angels

For to which of the angels did he ever say,

“You are my son,
    today I have begotten you,”[f]

and again,

“I will be his father[g],
    and he will be my son[h]”?[i]

And again, when he brings the firstborn into the world, he says,

“And let all the angels of God worship him.”[j]

And concerning the angels he says,

“The one who makes his angels winds,
and his servants a flame of fire,”[k]

but concerning the Son,

“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever[l],
and the scepter of righteous is the scepter of your kingdom.
    You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
because of this God, your God, has anointed you
    with the olive oil of joy more than your companions.[m]

10 And,

“You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning,
and the heavens are the works of your hands;
11 they will perish, but you continue,
    and they will all become old like a garment,
12 and like a robe you will roll them up,
and like a garment they will be changed;
but you are the same, and your years will not run out.”[n]

John 1:1-7

The Prologue to John’s Gospel

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. This one was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and apart from him not one thing came into being that[a] has come into being. In him was life, and the life was the light of humanity.[b] And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome[c] it.

A man came, sent from God, whose name was[d] John. This one came for a witness, in order that he could testify about the light, so that all would believe through him.

John 1:19-20

John the Baptist Testifies to Jesus

19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent[a] priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they could ask him, “Who are you?” 20 And he confessed—and he did not deny, and confessed—“I am not the Christ!”

John 1:29-34

29 On the next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This one is the one about whom I said, ‘After me is coming a man who is ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ 31 And I did not know him, but in order that he could be revealed to Israel, because of this I came baptizing with water.”

32 And John testified, saying, “I have seen the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven and remaining upon him. 33 And I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water, that one said to me, ‘The one upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon him—this one is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testify that this one is the Chosen One[a] of God.
