Book of Common Prayer
You Are Blessed If You Suffer For Righteousness
13 And who is the one who will do you evil[a] if you become zealots[b] for good? 14 But even though you might be suffering[c] for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed[d] ones!
Make Christ Lord In Your Heart As You Suffer For Doing Good
But do not fear their fear[e], nor be disturbed, 15 but set Christ apart as Lord in your hearts, being ready always for a defense to everyone asking you a reason for the hope in you, 16 but with gentleness and fear[f], having a good conscience in order that in what you are spoken-against[g], the ones maligning your good conduct in Christ may be put-to-shame. 17 For it is better to be suffering while doing-good, if the will of God should [so] will it, than while doing-evil.
Because Christ Himself Suffered To Bring Us To God, And Is Now Glorified By God
18 Because Christ also suffered once-for-all for sins— a righteous One for unrighteous ones— in order that He might bring you to God, having been put-to-death in the flesh but made-alive[h] by the Spirit[i],
19 ... by Whom[j] also[k] having gone, He proclaimed[l] to the spirits[m] in prison— 20 ones having disobeyed formerly when the patience of God was waiting in the days of Noah while an ark was being prepared,
... in which a few (that is, eight souls) were brought-safely through the water,
21 ... which[n] also as to you a corresponding-thing[o] now saves— baptism (not a putting-off [p] of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal[q] to God for[r] a good conscience) through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22 ... Who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers having been subjected to Him.
Therefore Arm Yourselves With The Same Intention
4 Therefore, Christ having suffered in the flesh, you also arm-yourselves with the same intention[s]. Because the one having suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live the remaining time in the flesh no longer for[t] the desires of humans, but for[u] the will of God. 3 For the time having passed is enough for you to have worked-out the will of the Gentiles, having walked in sensualities, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking-parties and unlawful idolatries, 4 in connection with which they are thinking-it-strange that you are not running-with them into the same excess[v] of wild-living, while they continue blaspheming— 5 who shall render an account to the One being ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For to this end it[w] was announced-as-good-news even to the dead[x]: that they might be judged according-to[y] people in the flesh[z], but be living according to God in the spirit[aa].
I Have Told You In Advance So That You May Not Fall
16 “I have spoken these things to you in order that you may not be caused-to-fall. 2 They will make you put-out-of-the-synagogue ones. Indeed, an hour is coming for everyone having killed you to think that he is offering service[a] to God. 3 And they will do these things because they did not know the Father nor Me. 4 But I have spoken these things to you so that when their hour comes, you may remember that I told you of them.
It Is Better That I Go Away, For I Will Send You The Helper To Convict The World
“Now I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 But now I am going to the One having sent Me. And none of you is asking Me, ‘Where are You going?’, 6 but grief has filled your heart because I have spoken these things to you. 7 But I tell you the truth— it is better[b] for you that I go away. For if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And having come, that One will convict the world concerning sin, and concerning righteousness, and concerning judgment— 9 concerning sin, because[c] they are not believing in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because[d] I am going to the Father and you are no longer going to see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
When The Helper Comes, He Will Guide You Into All Truth
12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you are not able to bear them now. 13 But when that One, the Spirit of truth, comes— He will guide you in all the truth. For He will not speak from Himself, but He will speak whatever He will hear. And He will declare to you the things coming. 14 That One will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All[e] that the Father has is Mine. For this reason I said that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you.
