Concerning Food Sacrificed To Idols: Let Love Guide Your Exercise of “Rights”
8 Now concerning the foods-sacrificed-to-idols, we know that we all have knowledge[a]. Knowledge puffs-up, but love builds-up. 2 If anyone thinks that he has come-to-know anything, he did not-yet know as he ought-to know. 3 But if one loves[b] God, this one has been known by Him. 4 Therefore concerning the eating of the foods-sacrificed-to-idols— we know that an idol is nothing[c] in the world, and that there is no God except one. 5 For even if-indeed there are ones being called gods, whether in heaven or on earth— as-indeed there are many[d] gods and many lords— 6 yet for us there is One God the Father, from Whom are all things, and we are[e] for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through Whom are all things, and we are through Him. 7 But this knowledge is not in all people. But some, by the accustomed-habit[f] of the idol until now, eat this food as[g] food-sacrificed-to-an-idol. And their conscience, being weak, is stained[h]. 8 But food will not bring us[i] near[j] to God— neither if we do not eat are we lacking, nor if we eat are we abounding. 9 But be watching-out that this right[k] of yours does not somehow become an opportunity-for-stumbling to the weak ones. 10 For if someone sees you, the one having knowledge, reclining [to eat] in an idol-temple, will not his conscience, being weak, be built-up so as to eat the foods-sacrificed-to-idols? 11 For the one being weak is being destroyed[l] by your knowledge— the brother for the sake of whom Christ died! 12 And in this manner sinning against the brothers and striking[m] their conscience while being weak, you are sinning against Christ.
On The One Hand, I Will Not Do Anything That Hinders People’s Spiritual Advance
13 For-this-very-reason, if food causes my brother to fall, I will never eat meats, ever— in-order-that I may not cause my brother to fall.
13 And they were casting out many demons. And they were anointing[a] many sick ones with oil and curing them.
Herod Hears of Jesus And Thinks John The Baptist Arose From The Dead
14 And King Herod[b] heard [of Him], for His name became known. And they[c] were saying that “John, the one baptizing, has arisen from the dead. And for this reason the miraculous-powers[d] are at-work in Him”. 15 And others were saying that “He is Elijah”. And others were saying that “He is a prophet like one of the [former] prophets”. 16 But having heard, Herod was saying, “John whom I beheaded— this one arose”.
For Herod Had Beheaded John The Baptist
17 For Herod himself, having sent out men, seized John and bound[e] him in prison because of Herodias[f], the wife of Philip his brother— because he married her. 18 For John was saying to Herod that “It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother”. 19 And Herodias was hostile[g] to him and wanting to kill him, and was not being able. 20 For Herod was fearing John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man. And he was protecting him. And having heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and-yet he was listening-to him with-pleasure. 21 And an opportune[h] day having come about when Herod, for his birthday-celebrations, made a banquet for his princes[i] and the commanders[j] and the leading[k] ones of Galilee, 22 and his[l] daughter Herodias[m] having come in and danced— she pleased Herod, and the ones reclining-back-with him [to eat]. The king said to the girl[n], “Ask me whatever you wish and I will give it to you”. 23 And he swore-with-an-oath to her solemnly, “Whatever thing you ask me, I will give it to you— up to half of my kingdom”. 24 And having gone out, she said to her mother, “What should I ask-for?” And the one said, “The head of John, the one baptizing”. 25 And having immediately gone in with haste to the king, she asked, saying “I want you to give me at-once on a platter the head of John the Baptist”. 26 And the king, having become deeply-grieved, did not want to reject her because of the oaths and the ones reclining-back [to eat]. 27 And immediately having sent-out an executioner[o], the king commanded him to bring his head. And having gone, he beheaded him in the prison. 28 And he brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl. And the girl gave it to her mother. 29 And his disciples, having heard-of it, came and took away his corpse and laid it in a tomb.
