Psalm 55

Betrayal of a Friend and Trust in God

For the music director, with stringed instruments.

A maskil of David.[a]

55 Give ear, O God, to my prayer,
and do not hide yourself from my plea.
Attend to me and answer me.
I am restless in my lamenting and I groan,
because of the voice of an enemy,
because of the oppression of the wicked,
because they bring down evil on me,
and in anger they hold a grudge against me.
My heart trembles within me,
and deathly terrors fall on me.
Fear and trembling come on me,
and horror overwhelms me.
So I say, “Oh, that[b] I had wings like a dove.
I would fly away and be at rest.
Look, I would flee far away.
I would dwell in the wilderness. Selah
I would hurry to my refuge
from the raging wind and storm.”
Confuse, O Lord; divide their speech,
because I see violence and strife in the city.
10 Day and night they go around it on its walls,
and iniquity and trouble are in its midst.
11 Destruction is within it,
and oppression and deceit
do not depart from its public square.
12 For it is not an enemy that taunts me,
or I could bear it.
It is not one who hates me that magnifies himself over me,
or I could hide myself from him.
13 But it is you, a man my equal,
my friend and confidant.
14 We who would take sweet counsel together;
in the house[c] of God
we would walk with the throng.
15 Let death deceive them. May they descend to Sheol alive,
because evil is in their home and heart.[d]
16 As for me, I will call to God,
and Yahweh will save me.
17 Morning, noon and night[e] I will lament and groan loudly,
and he will hear my voice.
18 He safely redeems my life from the battle against me,[f]
because those standing against me are among many.
19 God will hear and answer them,[g]
he who is enthroned from of old, Selah
Because they do not change,
and they do not fear God.
20 He has put forth his hands against his friends;[h]
he has defiled his covenant.
21 The buttery words[i] of his mouth were smooth,
but there was battle in his heart.
His words were smoother than oil,
but they were drawn swords.
22 Cast your burden on Yahweh,
and he will sustain you.
He will never allow the righteous to be moved.[j]
23 But you, O God, you will bring them down to the pit of corruption.
The men of bloodshed and deceit will not live half their days,
but I will trust you.

Psalm 138:1-139:23

Thanksgiving for Yahweh’s Goodness

Of David.[a]

138 I give you thanks with my whole heart;
before the gods I sing your praise.
I bow down toward your holy temple
and give thanks to your name,
because of your loyal love and faithfulness,
for you have magnified your word[b] according to all your name.[c]
When[d] I called and you answered me,
you emboldened me in my soul with strength.
All the kings of the earth
will praise you, O Yahweh,
when they have heard the words[e] of your mouth,
and they will sing of the ways of Yahweh,
because Yahweh’s glory is great.
Though Yahweh is high, yet he sees the lowly,
but the proud he perceives[f] at a distance.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble,
you preserve me alive.
You stretch out your hand against the anger of my enemies,
and you save me with your right hand.
Yahweh accomplishes things for my benefit.
O Yahweh, your loyal love endures forever;
do not abandon the works of your hands.

The Knowledge of God

For the music director. Of David. A psalm.[g]

139 O Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me.
You know my sitting down and my rising up.
You understand my thought from afar.
You search out[h] my wandering and my lying down,
and are acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word yet on my tongue,
but behold, O Yahweh, you know it completely.
You barricade me behind and in front,
and set your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.
It is set high; I cannot prevail against it.
Where I can go from your Spirit,
or where can I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, there you are,
and if I make my bed in Sheol, look! There you are.
If I lift up the wings of the dawn,
and I alight on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand would lead me,
and your right hand would hold me fast.
11 And if I should say, “Surely darkness will cover me,
and the light around me will be as night,”
12 even the darkness is not too dark for you,[i]
and the night shines as the day—
the darkness and the light are alike for you.
13 Indeed you created my inward parts;[j]
you wove me in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, because I am fearfully
and wonderfully made.[k]
Wonderful are your works,
and my soul knows it well.
15 My frame[l] was not hidden from you,
when I was created secretly,[m]
and intricately woven
in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my embryo,[n]
and in your book they all were written—
days fashioned for me when there was not one of them.
17 And to me, how precious[o] are your thoughts, O God;
how vast is their sum.
18 If I should count them,
they would outnumber the sand.
I awaken, and I am still with you.
19 If only you would kill the wicked, O God—
so get away from me, you bloodthirsty men[p]
20 who speak against you deceitfully.
Your enemies take your name in vain.
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Yahweh?
And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?
22 I hate them with a complete hatred;
they have become my enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.

Deuteronomy 29:2-15

And Moses summoned all of Israel and said to them, “You saw all that Yahweh did before your eyes in the land of Egypt and to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land; that is, the great trials that your eyes saw, and those great signs and wonders. But Yahweh has not given to you a heart to understand, or eyes to see, or ears to hear, even to this day.[a] And I have led you forty years[b] in the desert; your clothes have not worn out on you,[c] and your sandal has not worn out on your foot.[d] You have not eaten bread, and you have not drunk wine and strong drink, so that you may know that I am Yahweh your God. And when you came to this place then Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out to meet you for battle, and we defeated them. And we took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites[e] and to the Gadites[f] and to the half-tribe of Manasseh. And you must diligently observe the words of this covenant,[g] so that you may succeed in all that you do.

10 “You are standing today,[h] all of you, before[i] Yahweh your God, your leaders, your tribes, your elders, and your officials, all the men of Israel, 11 your little children, your women and your aliens[j] who are in the midst of your camp, from the choppers[k] of your wood to the drawers[l] of your water, 12 in order for you to enter into the covenant of Yahweh your God,[m] and into[n] his oath that Yahweh your God is making with you[o] today,[p] 13 in order to establish you today[q] to himself[r] as a people and so that he may be for you as God, just as he promised[s] to you and just as[t] he swore to your ancestors,[u] to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.

14 “Now I am not making this covenant[v] and this oath with you alone.[w] 15 But with whoever is standing here[x] with us today[y] before[z] Yahweh our God, and with whoever is not standing here[aa] with us today.[ab]

2 Corinthians 9

God Loves a Cheerful Giver

For it is unnecessary for me to write to you concerning the ministry to the saints, because I know your readiness to help, concerning which I keep on boasting to the Macedonians about you, that Achaia has been ready to help since last year, and your zeal has stirred up the majority of them. But I am sending the brothers in order that our boasting about you would not prove to be empty in this case, so that you may be prepared just as I was saying, lest somehow if Macedonians should come with me and find you unprepared, we—not to speak of you[a]—would be humiliated in connection with this project. Therefore I considered it necessary to urge the brothers that they should go on ahead to you and make arrangements in advance for your generous gift that was promised previously, so this would be prepared as a generous gift and not as grudgingly granted.

Now the point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one should give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly[b] or from compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to cause all grace to abound to you, so that in everything at all times, because you[c] have enough of everything, you may overflow in every good work. Just as it is written,

“He scattered widely, he gave to the poor;
his righteousness remains forever[d].”[e]

10 Now the one who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will provide and multiply your seed, and will cause the harvest of your righteousness to grow, 11 being made rich in every way for all generosity, which is producing through us thanksgiving to God, 12 because the service of this ministry is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but also is overflowing through many expressions of thanksgiving to God. 13 Through the proven character of this service they will glorify God because of the submission of your confession to the gospel of Christ and the generosity of your participation toward them and toward everyone, 14 and they are longing for you in their prayers for you, because of the surpassing grace of God to you. 15 Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!

Luke 18:15-30

Little Children Brought to Jesus

15 Now they were bringing even their[a] babies to him so that he could touch them. But when[b] the disciples saw it,[c] they rebuked them. 16 But Jesus called them to himself, saying, “Allow the children to come to me, and do not forbid them, for to such belongs[d] the kingdom of God. 17 Truly I say to you, whoever does not welcome the kingdom of God like a young child will never enter into it.”

A Rich Young Man

18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, “Good Teacher, by[e] doing what will I inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, do not murder, do not steal, do not give false testimony, honor your father and mother.’”[f] 21 And he said, “All these I have observed from my[g] youth.” 22 And when he[h] heard this,[i] Jesus said to him, “You still lack one thing:[j] Sell all that you have, and distribute the proceeds[k] to the poor—and you will have treasure in heaven—and come, follow me.” 23 But when he[l] heard these things he became very sad, because he was extremely wealthy.

24 And Jesus took notice of him[m] and[n] said, “How difficult it is for[o] those who possess wealth to enter into the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God. 26 So those who heard this[p] said, “And who can be saved?” 27 But he said, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.”

28 And Peter said, “Behold, we have left all that is ours[q] and[r] followed you.” 29 And he said to them, “Truly I say to you that there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children on account of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times more in this time and in the age to come, eternal life.”
