Psalm 83

O God, Do Not Keep Silence

A Song. A Psalm of (A)Asaph.

83 O God, do not keep silence;
    (B)do not hold your peace or be still, O God!
For behold, your enemies (C)make an uproar;
    those who hate you have (D)raised their heads.
They lay (E)crafty plans against your people;
    they consult together against your (F)treasured ones.
They say, “Come, (G)let us wipe them out as a nation;
    let the name of Israel be remembered no more!”
For they conspire with one accord;
    against you they make a covenant—
the tents of (H)Edom and (I)the Ishmaelites,
    (J)Moab and (K)the Hagrites,
(L)Gebal and (M)Ammon and (N)Amalek,
    (O)Philistia with the inhabitants of (P)Tyre;
(Q)Asshur also has joined them;
    they are the strong arm of (R)the children of Lot. Selah

Do to them as you did to (S)Midian,
    as to (T)Sisera and Jabin at (U)the river Kishon,
10 who were destroyed at (V)En-dor,
    who became (W)dung for the ground.
11 Make their nobles like (X)Oreb and Zeeb,
    all their princes like (Y)Zebah and Zalmunna,
12 who said, (Z)“Let us take possession for ourselves
    of the pastures of God.”

13 O my God, make them like (AA)whirling dust,[a]
    like (AB)chaff before the wind.
14 As (AC)fire consumes the forest,
    as the flame (AD)sets the mountains ablaze,
15 so may you pursue them (AE)with your tempest
    and terrify them with your hurricane!
16 (AF)Fill their faces with shame,
    that they may seek your name, O Lord.
17 Let them be (AG)put to shame and dismayed forever;
    let them perish in disgrace,
18 that they may (AH)know that you alone,
    (AI)whose name is the Lord,
    are (AJ)the Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 42-43

Book Two

Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?

To the choirmaster. A Maskil[a] of (A)the Sons of Korah.

42 (B)As a deer pants for flowing streams,
    so pants my soul for you, O God.
(C)My soul thirsts for God,
    for (D)the living God.
When shall I come and (E)appear before God?[b]
(F)My tears have been my food
    day and night,
(G)while they say to me all the day long,
    “Where is your God?”
These things I remember,
    as I (H)pour out my soul:
(I)how I would go (J)with the throng
    and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
    (K)a multitude keeping festival.

(L)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you (M)in turmoil within me?
(N)Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation[c] and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;
    therefore I (O)remember you
(P)from the land of Jordan and of (Q)Hermon,
    from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
    at the roar of your waterfalls;
(R)all your breakers and your (S)waves
    have gone over me.
By day the Lord (T)commands his steadfast love,
    and at (U)night his song is with me,
    a prayer to the God of my life.
I say to God, (V)my rock:
    “Why have you forgotten me?
(W)Why do I go mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
    my adversaries taunt me,
(X)while they say to me all the day long,
    “Where is your God?”

11 (Y)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.

Send Out Your Light and Your Truth

43 (Z)Vindicate me, O God, and (AA)defend my cause
    against an ungodly people,
from (AB)the deceitful and unjust man
    deliver me!
For you are (AC)the God in whom I take refuge;
    why have you (AD)rejected me?
Why do I (AE)go about mourning
    because of the oppression of the enemy?

(AF)Send out your light and your truth;
    let them lead me;
let them bring me to your (AG)holy hill
    and to your (AH)dwelling!
Then I will go to the altar of God,
    to God my exceeding joy,
and I will praise you with the lyre,
    O God, my God.

(AI)Why are you cast down, O my soul,
    and why are you in turmoil within me?
(AJ)Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
    my salvation and my God.

Psalm 85-86

Revive Us Again

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of (A)the Sons of Korah.

85 Lord, you were (B)favorable to your land;
    you (C)restored the fortunes of Jacob.
You (D)forgave the iniquity of your people;
    you (E)covered all their sin. Selah
You withdrew all your wrath;
    you (F)turned from your hot anger.

(G)Restore us again, O God of our salvation,
    and put away your indignation toward us!
(H)Will you be angry with us forever?
    Will you prolong your anger to all generations?
Will you not (I)revive us again,
    that your people may (J)rejoice in you?
Show us your steadfast love, O Lord,
    and grant us your salvation.

(K)Let me hear what God the Lord will speak,
    for he will (L)speak peace to his people, to his (M)saints;
    but let them not (N)turn back to (O)folly.
Surely his (P)salvation is near to those who fear him,
    that (Q)glory may dwell in our land.

10 (R)Steadfast love and faithfulness meet;
    (S)righteousness and peace kiss each other.
11 Faithfulness springs up from the ground,
    and righteousness looks down from the sky.
12 Yes, (T)the Lord will give what is good,
    and our land (U)will yield its increase.
13 (V)Righteousness will go before him
    and make his footsteps a way.

Great Is Your Steadfast Love

(W)A Prayer of David.

86 (X)Incline your ear, O Lord, and answer me,
    for I am (Y)poor and needy.
Preserve my life, for I am (Z)godly;
    save your servant, who (AA)trusts in you—you are my God.
(AB)Be gracious to me, O Lord,
    for to you do I cry all the day.
Gladden the soul of your servant,
    for (AC)to you, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
For you, O Lord, are good and (AD)forgiving,
    (AE)abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.
(AF)Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
    listen to my plea for grace.
In (AG)the day of my trouble I call upon you,
    (AH)for you answer me.

There is (AI)none like you among the gods, O Lord,
    (AJ)nor are there any works like yours.
(AK)All the nations you have made shall come
    and worship before you, O Lord,
    and shall glorify your name.
10 For (AL)you are great and (AM)do wondrous things;
    (AN)you alone are God.
11 (AO)Teach me your way, O Lord,
    that I may (AP)walk in your truth;
    (AQ)unite my heart to fear your name.
12 I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
    and I will glorify your name forever.
13 (AR)For great is your steadfast love toward me;
    you have (AS)delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

14 O God, insolent men have (AT)risen up against me;
    a band of ruthless men seeks my life,
    and they do not set you before them.
15 But you, O Lord, are a God (AU)merciful and gracious,
    slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
16 (AV)Turn to me and be gracious to me;
    give your strength to (AW)your servant,
    and save (AX)the son of your maidservant.
17 (AY)Show me a sign of your (AZ)favor,
    that those who hate me may see and be put to shame
    because you, Lord, have helped me and comforted me.

Jeremiah 10:11-24

11 Thus shall you say to them: (A)“The gods who did not make the heavens and the earth (B)shall perish from the earth and from under the heavens.”[a]

12 (C)It is he who (D)made the earth by his power,
    (E)who established the world by his wisdom,
    and (F)by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
13 (G)When he utters his voice, there is a tumult of waters in the heavens,
    (H)and he makes the mist rise from the ends of the earth.
(I)He makes lightning (J)for the rain,
    (K)and he brings forth the wind (L)from his storehouses.
14 (M)Every man is stupid and without knowledge;
    (N)every goldsmith is put to shame by his idols,
for his images are false,
    (O)and there is no breath in them.
15 They are worthless, a work of delusion;
    at the time of their punishment they shall perish.
16 Not like these is he who is (P)the portion of Jacob,
    for he is the one who formed all things,
(Q)and Israel is the tribe of his inheritance;
    (R)the Lord of hosts is his name.

17 (S)Gather up your bundle from the ground,
    O you who dwell under siege!
18 For thus says the Lord:
(T)“Behold, I am slinging out the inhabitants of the land
    at this time,
(U)and I will bring distress on them,
    that they may feel it.”

19 Woe is me because of my hurt!
    (V)My wound is grievous.
But I said, “Truly this is an affliction,
    and I must bear it.”
20 (W)My tent is destroyed,
    and all my cords are broken;
my children have gone from me,
    (X)and they are not;
there is no one to spread my tent again
    and (Y)to set up my curtains.
21 (Z)For the shepherds (AA)are stupid
    and do not inquire of the Lord;
therefore they have not prospered,
    (AB)and all their flock is scattered.

22 A voice, a rumor! Behold, it comes!—
    (AC)a great commotion out of the north country
to make (AD)the cities of Judah a desolation,
    (AE)a lair of jackals.

23 (AF)I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself,
    that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
24 (AG)Correct me, O Lord, but in justice;
    not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.

Romans 5:12-21

Death in Adam, Life in Christ

12 Therefore, just as (A)sin came into the world through one man, and (B)death through sin, and (C)so death spread to all men[a] because (D)all sinned— 13 for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but (E)sin is not counted where there is no law. 14 Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sinning was not (F)like the transgression of Adam, (G)who was a type of (H)the one who was to come.

15 But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for (I)many. 16 And the free gift is not like the result of that one man's sin. For (J)the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought (K)justification. 17 For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness (L)reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.

18 Therefore, as one trespass[b] led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness[c] leads to justification and life for (M)all men. 19 For as by the one man's (N)disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man's (O)obedience the many will be made righteous. 20 Now (P)the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, (Q)grace abounded all the more, 21 so that, (R)as sin reigned in death, (S)grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

John 8:21-32

21 So he said to them again, (A)“I am going away, and (B)you will seek me, and (C)you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22 So the Jews said, (D)“Will he kill himself, since he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23 He said to them, (E)“You are from below; I am from above. (F)You are of this world; (G)I am not of this world. 24 I told you that you (H)would die in your sins, for (I)unless you believe that (J)I am he you will die in your sins.” 25 So they said to him, (K)“Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Just what I have been telling you from the beginning. 26 I have much to say about you and much to judge, but (L)he who sent me is true, and I declare (M)to the world (N)what I have heard from him.” 27 They did not understand that (O)he had been speaking to them about the Father. 28 So Jesus said to them, “When you have (P)lifted up the Son of Man, (Q)then you will know that (R)I am he, and that (S)I do nothing on my own authority, but (T)speak just as the Father taught me. 29 And (U)he who sent me is with me. (V)He has not left me alone, for (W)I always do the things that are pleasing to him.” 30 As he was saying these things, (X)many believed in him.

The Truth Will Set You Free

31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, (Y)“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will (Z)know the truth, and the truth (AA)will set you free.”
