Psalm 5

For the worship leader. A song of David accompanied by flutes.[a]

The various psalms reflect nearly every human emotion: unbridled joy, deep-seated jealousy, seething anger, hope, and depression. These are only a few of the emotions behind the poetry we hear expressed in individual psalms. Feelings and emotions are central to what it means to be human. We cannot escape them nor should we. Psalms invites us to take the emotions we feel and bring them before God. This book models how to come before God in times of sadness, brokenness, and joy. Psalm 5 is a cry for help and a plea for guidance by a person who suffered at the hands of an enemy. It talks about the morning as the time to pray and listen for God to answer. Like many laments, it begins with a cry but ends in confidence.

Bend Your ear to me and listen to my words, O Eternal One;
    hear the deep cry of my heart.
Listen to my call for help,
    my King, my True God;
    to You alone I pray.
In the morning, O Eternal One, listen for my voice;
    in the day’s first light, I will offer my prayer to You and watch expectantly for Your answer.

You’re not a God who smiles at sin;
    You cannot abide with evil.
The proud wither in Your presence;
    You hate all who pervert and destroy what is good.
You destroy those with lying lips;
    the Eternal detests those who murder and deceive.

Yet I, by Your loving grace,
    am welcomed into Your house;
I will turn my face toward Your holy place
    and fall on my knees in reverence before You.
O Eternal One, lead me in the path of Your righteousness
    amidst those who wish me harm;
    make Your way clear to me.

Their words cannot be trusted;
    they are destructive to their cores.
What comes out of their mouths is as foul as a rotting corpse;
    their words stink of flattery.
10 Find them guilty, O True God;
    let their own devices bring them ruin.
Throw them out, and let them drown in the deluge of their sin,
    for in revolt they brazenly spit in Your face.

11 But let those who run to You for safety be glad they did;
    let them break out in joyful song.
May You keep them safe—
    their love for You resounding in their hearts.
12 You, O Eternal, are the One who lays all good things in the laps of the right-hearted.
    Your blessings surround them like a shield.

Psalm 6

For the worship leader. A song of David accompanied by the lyre.[b]

O Eternal One, don’t punish me in Your anger
    or harshly correct me.
Show me grace, Eternal God. I am completely undone.
    Bring me back together, Eternal One. Mend my shattered bones.
My soul is drowning in darkness.
    How long can You, the Eternal, let things go on like this?

Come back, Eternal One, and lead me to Your saving light.
    Rescue me because I know You are truly compassionate.
I’m alive for a reason—I can’t worship You if I’m dead.
    If I’m six feet under, how can I thank You?

I’m exhausted. I cannot even speak, my voice fading as sighs.
    Every day ends in the same place—lying in bed, covered in tears,
    my pillow wet with sorrow.
My eyes burn, devoured with grief;
    they grow weak as I constantly watch for my enemies.

All who are evil, stay away from me
    because the Eternal hears my voice, listens as I cry.
The Eternal God hears my simple prayers;
    He receives my request.
10 All who seek to destroy me will be humiliated;
    they will turn away and suddenly crumble in shame.

Psalm 10-11

Psalm 10[a]

Why, O Eternal One, are You so far away?
    Why can’t You be found during troubling times?
Mean and haughty people hunt down the poor.
    May they get caught up in their own wicked schemes.

For the wicked celebrates the evil cravings of his heart
    as the greedy curses and rejects the Eternal.
The arrogance of the wicked one keeps him from seeking the True God.
    He truly thinks, “There is no God.”

His ways seem always to be successful;
    Your judgments, too, seem far beyond him, out of his reach.
    He looks down on all his enemies.
In his heart he has decided, “Nothing will faze me.
    From generation to generation I will not face trouble.”

His mouth is full of curses, lies, and oppression.[b]
    Beneath his tongue lie trouble and wickedness.
He hides in the shadows of the villages,
    waiting to ambush and kill the innocent in dark corners.
He eyes the weak and the poor.

Ominously, like a lion in its lair,
    he lurks in secret to waylay those who are downtrodden.
When he catches them, he draws them in and drags them off with his net.

10 Quietly crouching, lying low,
    ready to overwhelm the next by his strength,
11 The wicked thinks in his heart, “God has forgotten us!
    He has covered His face and will never notice!”

12 Arise, O Eternal, my True God. Lift up Your hand.
    Do not forget the downtrodden.
13 Why does the wicked revile the True God?
    He has decided, “He will not hold me responsible.”

14 But wait! You have seen,
    and You will consider the trouble and grief he caused.
    You will impose consequences for his actions.
The helpless, the orphans, commit themselves to You,
    and You have been their Helper.

15 Break the arm of the one guilty of doing evil;
    investigate all his wicked acts;
    hold him responsible for every last one of them.
16 The Eternal will reign as King forever.
    The other nations will be swept off His land.

17 O Eternal One, You have heard the longings of the poor and lowly.
    You will strengthen them; You who are of heaven will hear them,
18 Vindicating the orphan and the oppressed
    so that men who are of the earth will terrify them no more.

Psalm 11

For the worship leader. A song of David.

Psalm 11 is a Davidic psalm expressing trust in the Eternal as a refuge and fortress for those who do what is right. David spent many years struggling first with Saul, then with the neighboring nations, and finally against the rebellion led by his son Absalom.

I am already in the soft embrace of the Eternal,
    so why do you beckon me to leave, saying,
    “Fly like a bird to the mountains.
Look! The wicked approach with bows bent,
    sneaking around in the shadows,
    setting their arrows against their bowstrings to pierce everyone whose heart is pure.
If the foundations are crumbling,
    is there hope for the righteous?”

But the Eternal has not moved; He remains in His holy temple.
    He sits squarely on His heavenly throne.
    He observes the sons of Adam and daughters of Eve, examining us within and without,
    exploring every fiber of our beings.
The Eternal searches the hearts of those who are good,
    but He despises all those who can’t get enough of perversion and violence.
If you are evil, He will rain hot lava over your head,
    will fill your cup with burning wind and liquid fire to scorch your insides.

The Eternal is right in all His ways;
    He cherishes all that is upright.
Those who do what is right in His eyes will see His face.

1 Kings 1:38-2:4

38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah (Jehoiada’s son), and David’s mercenary guards—the Cherethites and the Pelethites—journeyed together to Gihon; and Solomon rode on the back of one of David’s mules.

39 Zadok the priest anointed Solomon with the horn of oil from the congregation tent. Then the trumpet was sounded, and everyone proclaimed, “May King Solomon have a long life!” 40 Everyone then followed after Solomon. They played their wind instruments and joyfully celebrated until the sound shook the earth.

41 As they were finishing their feast, Adonijah and all those who were attending his gathering heard the celebration of Solomon’s followers. Joab heard the trumpet.

Joab: What is the meaning of this jamboree? Why does the city celebrate?

42 While he was questioning the celebration, Jonathan (son of Abiathar the priest) arrived.

Adonijah (welcoming Jonathan): Please come join us. Make yourself at home. You are a good man; surely you bring us good news.

Jonathan: 43 You are wrong! Our lord, King David, has appointed Solomon as king. 44 By David’s instruction, Solomon is with Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah (Jehoiada’s son), the Cherethites, and the Pelethites. Furthermore, the king gave Solomon a mule to ride. 45 When they got to Gihon, Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed Solomon as the new king. They are celebrating now, and that is the reason for the city’s festivities you are hearing; 46 Solomon already sits on the throne of the kingdom. 47 All the servants of the king went to our lord, King David, to congratulate him: “Bless you! May your God make Solomon’s reign, his name, and his throne even greater than yours!” Then the king bowed down to Solomon on his bed.

Although King David is too sick to leave his bed, he blesses Solomon’s coronation by putting his face toward the floor.

King David: 48 Praise be to the Eternal One, Israel’s God! He has allowed me to live long enough to see the day when another sits on my throne.

49 All those attending Adonijah’s gathering were terrified by this news. They all gathered their things and departed. 50 Even Adonijah was completely terrified of Solomon. He stood up and rushed to the altar seeking sanctuary. He grabbed hold of the horns expecting Solomon to spare his life, as was the custom.

Inside the congregation tent, priests make daily sacrifices to the Lord on the great horned altar. By touching the bloodstained horns of the altar, an innocent man can immediately grab God’s attention and be granted divine absolution. That absolution then has to come from the court as well, since no man can overrule God. It is Adonijah’s plan to save himself when he grabs the horns, but he is not an innocent man. Because Adonijah abuses this custom, Solomon is not required to forgive his brother just because he is at the altar.

51 Solomon received the news.

Messenger: Adonijah is terrified of King Solomon. He is gripping the horns of the altar and pleading, “Today I beg King Solomon to promise me, his servant Adonijah, that he will not execute me.”

Solomon: 52 If Adonijah will be a man of integrity and honor, then not a single hair on his head will be harmed. But if he is an evil man, then he shall die.

53 King Solomon called for Adonijah, and he was led down from the altar. Adonijah entered the king’s presence and fell down before him, putting his face to the floor.

Solomon (to Adonijah): Leave me, and return to your house.

David was close to dying, so he gave direction to his son, Solomon.

King David: I am about to go the way all earthly things go. Be strong; demonstrate your maturity. Honor the laws of the Eternal your God, and live by His truth. Be faithful to His laws, commands, judgments, and precepts—the ones written for us in the instructions of Moses. If you follow this path, you will be successful in everything you do no matter where you are, for the Eternal will be faithful to His promise to me throughout your life. He promised me, “For as long as your sons are devoted to Me and live by My truth and embrace it with all their being, your offspring will always sit upon Israel’s throne.”[a]

Acts 26:24-27:8

Festus (interrupting): 24 You’ve gone crazy, Paul! You’ve read one book too many and have gone insane!

Paul: 25 No, most excellent Festus, I am not insane. I am telling the sane and sober truth. 26 The king understands what I’m talking about, which is why I could speak so freely to him. None of these things have been covered up and hidden away in a corner, so I’m sure none of these things have escaped his notice. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know you must believe.

Agrippa: 28 Paul, have you so quickly moved on from defending yourself to trying to persuade me to become a Christian?

Paul: 29 Whether I have done so quickly or not, I pray to God that not only you but also everyone who is listening to me today might become what I am—minus these chains.

30 The king stood to leave at this point, along with Festus, Bernice, and all those who had been seated; 31 and as they left, everyone was saying the same thing: “This man isn’t doing anything deserving death—he shouldn’t even be in prison.”

Agrippa (to Festus): 32 This man could have been released completely if he had not appealed to the emperor.

At different points in Acts, Luke shows how the good news of Jesus challenges Greco-Roman culture and religion, but he also shows that Christianity is not subversive to the Roman government. These direct statements by Roman officials about Paul’s innocence support this message. However, a challenge to culture and religion always ends up becoming a challenge to the government, as later Christians will learn.

27 The date was set for us to depart for Rome, and Paul and some other prisoners were transferred to the custody of a Roman officer named Julius, a member of the Augustan Division. I, Luke, was permitted to join Paul for his journey to Rome, along with Aristarchus, a Macedonian brother from Thessalonica. We boarded a ship from Adramyttium that was stopping in ports along the coast of Asia. We stopped the next day at Sidon, and Julius kindly allowed Paul to visit friends and be taken care of by them. We sailed from there north of Cyprus because the winds were unfavorable. We passed Cilicia and Pamphylia on our right and then came to Myra in Lycia. There Julius found a ship from Alexandria heading directly to Italy, to which we transferred. The winds were still contrary, so we made slow progress for a number of days and with difficulty passed Cnidus and sailed south toward Crete and past Cape Salmone on its eastern end. Sailing conditions were adverse to say the least. Finally we came to a place called Fair Havens, near the city of Lasea on the south coast of Crete.

Mark 13:28-37

The disciples can’t help but notice that something is in the air during this week between His entry into Jerusalem and His crucifixion. Surely the moment when Jesus is to reveal Himself as the Anointed can’t be far off. By repeatedly calling Himself the Son of Man, Jesus has told people His kingdom will be divinely instituted like the one described in Daniel 7. They are also thinking of promises about the coming Anointed One. But for Jesus, everything now is connected to His imminent death and resurrection. Even as He predicts the temple’s fall—an event that will occur about 40 years later—and speaks of His second coming, He is still thinking about His death. After all, resurrection can’t happen without death. And the old world must die before the world is made new.

Jesus: 28 Learn this lesson from the fig tree: When its branch is new and tender and begins to put forth leaves, you know that summer must be near. 29 In the same way, when you see and hear the things I’ve described to you taking place, you’ll know the time is drawing near. 30 It’s true—this generation will not pass away before all these things have happened. 31 Heaven and earth may pass away, but these words of Mine will never pass away.

32 Take heed: no one knows the day or hour when the end is coming. The messengers in heaven don’t know, nor does the Son. Only the Father knows.

33 So be alert. Watch for it [and pray,][a] for you never know when that time might approach.

34 This situation is like a man who went on a journey; when he departed, he left his servants in charge of the house. Each of them had his own job to do; and the man left the porter to stand at the door, watching. 35 So stay awake, because no one knows when the master of the house is coming back. It could be in the evening or at midnight or when the rooster crows or in the morning. 36 Stay awake; be alert so that when he suddenly returns, the master won’t find you sleeping.

37 The teaching I am giving the four of you now is for everyone who will follow Me: stay awake, and keep your eyes open.
