Psalm 93

The Lord is King![a]

93 The Lord rules as King!
He wears royal power as his clothes.
His strength is like a belt round his body.[b]
So the world is safe and strong.
Nothing can shake it from its place.
You, Lord, have always ruled as King,
since before the beginning of time.
The floods of water have risen up, Lord.
They have risen with a loud noise.
Their waves beat against the land.[c]
But the Lord rules as King
    high above everything!
He rules over the powerful waves of the sea,
    with all their great noise!
Lord, your rules remain strong and true.
Your house will always be holy,
    because you are holy.

Psalm 96

Sing a new song![a]

96 Sing a new song to praise the Lord!
All the world,
    sing to praise the Lord!
Sing to praise the Lord's great name!
Every day, tell people the message
    that he has rescued us.
Tell the other nations that he is very great.
Tell all of them
about the great things that he has done.
Yes, the Lord is great!
Everyone should praise him as he deserves.
People should respect him with fear,
    more than all other gods.
All the other nations' gods are useless idols.
But the Lord made the heavens.
We see that he is a very great king.
His holy home is full of his power and his beauty.
You people of other nations,
recognize that the Lord is great and powerful.
Agree that the Lord's name is great.
Bring a gift to offer to him in his temple.
Worship the Lord,
    who is beautiful and holy.
Everyone on earth must shake with fear in front of him.
10 Tell all the nations,
    ‘The Lord rules as King!’
He has fixed the world in its place,
so that nothing can shake it.
He will judge all the people of the world fairly.
11 The earth and the sky
    should be happy!
The sea and everything in it
    should shout aloud!
12 The fields and all their crops should shout with joy!
Then all the trees in the forests will also sing
    because they are so happy!
13 They will sing to praise the Lord,
for he will come to judge the earth.
He is a fair judge.
He will judge all the people of the world with his truth.

Psalm 34

David wrote this song when he made the Philistine king think that he was crazy. He wanted the king to send him away.[a]

God is great![b]

34 I will always praise the Lord.
All the time I will sing to praise him.
I will boast that the Lord is great!
I want weak people to hear that.
I want them to be happy!
Join with me to tell people that the Lord is great!
Together we will make his name famous.
I asked the Lord to help me,
    and he answered me.
He saved me from everything that made me afraid.
People who trust the Lord to help them
    will be very happy.
Their faces will be bright,
and they will not be ashamed.
I was weak and helpless,
so I called out to the Lord.
The Lord heard me.
He saved me from all my troubles.
The Lord's angel is very near
to people who respect and obey the Lord.
He keeps them safe from danger.
Taste and see that the Lord is good!
God blesses people who turn to him
    to keep them safe.
All you people who belong to the Lord,
    continue to obey him.
People who respect the Lord
will have the things that they need.
10 Even young lions may not have food,
    so that they become hungry.
But people who trust the Lord for help
will receive every good thing that they need.

11 Children, come and listen to me!
I will teach you how to respect the Lord.
12 Do you want to live a good life?
Do you want your life to be long and happy?
13 If so, do not speak any evil words.
Do not tell lies to deceive people.
14 Do good things instead of evil things.
Try to bring peace into people's lives.
15 The Lord watches over righteous people.
He hears them when they call to him for help.
16 But the Lord turns against people who do evil things.
He causes everybody to forget that they ever lived.
17 The Lord hears his righteous people
    when they call for help.
He saves them from all their troubles.
18 When people are upset,
the Lord is near to them.
He saves those who feel very weak and upset.
19 Righteous people may often have troubles,
but the Lord saves them from every danger.
20 The Lord keeps them safe.
Not even one of their bones is broken!
21 Evil things will return to kill wicked people.
Whoever hates God's own people
    will receive punishment.
22 The Lord saves the lives of his servants.
Everyone who trusts the Lord to keep them safe
will not receive punishment as a guilty person.

Isaiah 57:14-21

The Lord promises to help his people

14 The Lord says,

‘Build a road! Make it ready for my people to travel on!
Remove everything that would cause them to fall.’

15 The Mighty God is far higher than all others. He rules from above and he lives for ever. His name is holy. He says,

‘I live in a high and holy place.
But I am also with anyone who is humble
and who is sorry when he does wrong things.
I will comfort people who are like that,
and I will give them hope.
16 I will not always speak against my people.
I will not be angry with them for ever.
I do not want them to lose hope completely.
I myself gave life to them.
17 I was angry with them because they were greedy,
    which was a sin.
So I punished them.
I was angry and I turned away from them.
But they still refused to obey me.
They continued to do what they wanted to do.
18 I have seen what they are doing.
But I will make them well again.
I will be a guide for them,
and I will comfort them again.
Then people who are sad and they are weeping
19     will sing songs to praise me!
I will give them a reason to do that.
I will bring peace to all my people,
    those who are far away,
    and those who are near.
Yes, I will make them completely well again.’
That is what the Lord says.
20 ‘But wicked people are like a rough sea
    with dangerous waves.
It cannot stay still.
Its waves throw up mud and dirt.
21 There will never be peace for wicked people.’
That is what my God says.

Hebrews 12:1-6

Be strong as servants of God

12 So we have learned about many people who trusted God long ago. They are like a very big crowd all round us and we should copy their example. We must be like people who run in a race.[a] We must throw away everything that stops us from running well. The sins that we do make us fall down very easily. We must not let those sins rule us. God has prepared the way that is in front of us. We must continue to be strong while we run along that way. We must choose to run that race well. As we run, we must always look towards Jesus. He is the one who trusted God completely. Our faith starts with him, and he will help us to trust God all the way to the end. Jesus accepted punishment on the cross. He chose to receive much pain. He did not think about being ashamed to die like that. He knew that God had prepared something very good for him that would make him happy. Now he has sat down at the right side of God to rule with him in heaven.

So think carefully about how Jesus lived on earth. Bad people did very bad things against him, but he continued to be strong. Think about him, and then you will not become weak as Christians. You will not stop trusting God.

You have been fighting against sin in your lives. But you have not yet had to fight like that until someone killed you. God speaks to you as his children. Do not ever forget these words in the Bible that will make you strong:[b]

‘My son, when the Lord shows you what is right,
do not easily forget it.
Do not be upset when he punishes you.
The Lord does that to everyone that he loves.
He punishes everyone that he accepts as a son.’

John 7:37-46

Streams of water that give life to people

37 The last day of the festival was the most important day. On that day, Jesus stood up and he spoke with a loud voice. He said, ‘If anyone is thirsty, he should come to me so that he may drink. 38 It says in the Bible, “God will cause streams of water to pour out from anyone who believes in me. Water that gives life will come out from inside that person.” ’ 39 Jesus was speaking about God's Spirit, who would come to people some time after that. Those people who believed in Jesus would receive God's Spirit at that later time. But God had not yet given his Spirit to people, because he had not yet raised Jesus back up to heaven.[a]

The people argue about who Jesus is

40 The people in the crowd heard Jesus say these words. Some of them said, ‘Surely this man must be the Prophet from God that we have been waiting for!’ 41 Other people said, ‘This man is the Messiah.’ But some other people said, ‘The Messiah will not come from Galilee! 42 The Bible says that the Messiah will come from King David's family.[b] He will come from Bethlehem, the town where David lived.’ 43 In this way the people had different thoughts about Jesus. 44 Some people wanted to take hold of him. But nobody could put their hands on him to take him away.

45 The officers returned to the leaders of the priests and the Pharisees. The leaders asked their officers, ‘Why did you not bring Jesus here?’ 46 The officers answered, ‘Nobody has ever spoken great things like this man speaks.’
