Psalm 146-147

The 1st Hallelujah Psalm[a]

146 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’
I will praise the Lord through all my life.
While I am alive, I will always sing to praise my God.
Do not trust in human leaders.
    No human can save you.
When they die, they return to the ground.
On that day, their plans come to an end.
The person who knows that the God of Jacob will help him is a happy person![b]
If he trusts in the Lord as his God, he is happy.
The Lord made the skies, the earth and the sea.
He also made everything that is in them.
He always does what he has promised to do.
He helps poor people to receive justice.
He gives food to the hungry.
He makes people that are in a prison go free.
The Lord makes blind people see again.
The Lord lifts up people who have fallen down.
The Lord loves people who are righteous.
The Lord takes care of strangers who live among us.
He helps widows and children who have no family.
But he stops wicked people doing what they want.
10 The Lord will rule as king for ever!
Zion's people, he will always be your God
    and your descendants' God.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

The 2nd Hallelujah Psalm

147 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
It is good to sing to praise our God!
Yes, it is right to praise him and it makes us happy.
The Lord is building Jerusalem again.
He is bringing home the Israelite exiles.
He makes people who are very sad well again.[c]
He helps their wounds to get better.
He decided how many stars there should be in the sky.
He has given a name to each of them.
Our Lord is great and very powerful.
    He understands everything!
The Lord gives help to poor people,
but he knocks down wicked people to the ground.
Offer a song to the Lord,
to thank him for what he has done.
Make music with a harp
    to praise our God.
He fills the sky with clouds.
He sends rain to make the earth wet.
He causes grass to grow on the hills.
He gives food for the animals to eat.
He feeds the young ravens when they cry.[d]
10 If a horse is very strong,
    that does not please him.
If a soldier is brave,
that does not make him happy.
11 Who does make the Lord happy?
People who respect him and serve him well.
People who trust him because they know he loves them.
12 Jerusalem's people, praise the Lord!
Yes, Zion's people, praise your God![e]
13 Praise him because he makes your city's gates strong.
He blesses the people who live there.
14 He causes your borders to be safe from your enemies.
He gives you lots of the best wheat to eat.
15 He sends his commands to reach all the earth.
Very soon the whole world knows what he wants.
16 He covers the earth with snow,
    like a white blanket.
He puts white frost everywhere,
like ashes that the wind blows.
17 He throws hail from the sky,
    like small stones.
When he sends a cold wind,
    nobody can continue to stand.
18 Then he commands it all to melt.
He makes the warm wind blow,
and the ice becomes streams of water.
19 He sends his message to Jacob's descendants.
He gives his rules and laws to Israel's people.[f]
20 He has not done that for any other nation.
They do not know his laws.[g]
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Psalm 111-113

The Lord does great things[a]

111 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
I will thank the Lord with all that I am,
when we, his people, meet together.
The Lord does great things!
People who enjoy them,
    think carefully about them.
Everything that he does
shows that he is a very great king!
He will always do what is completely right.
The Lord causes us to remember his miracles.
He is kind and he forgives people.
He gives food to the people who serve him.
He always remembers the covenant
that he made with his people.
He said that he would use his great power
    to help his people.
He has given to them
the lands where other nations lived.
He is always honest and fair
in the things that he does.
His rules help people to live well.
They will continue to be right for all time.
People should trust those rules and obey them.
He rescued his people
    so that they became free.
He made his covenant with them
so that it would continue for ever.
His name is holy,
and people should respect him with fear.
10 If you want to live in a wise way,
    respect and obey the Lord.[b]
Everyone who lives in the way that he teaches
    will understand what is right.
People should praise the Lord for ever!

God makes his people strong[c]

112 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
When someone respects the Lord with fear,
    God has blessed that person!
He is happy to obey the Lord's commands.
His children will become powerful in the land.
God will bless their descendants who serve him.
His family will have valuable things,
    and they will be rich.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
God's light shines on those who serve him,
even when they are in a dark place.
God blesses those who are kind to others,
and who do what is right and fair.
People who are kind and lend money to others,
and who work in an honest way,
    will enjoy a good life.
Righteous people will never fail.
    People will always remember them.
They are not afraid to hear bad news.
They are brave,
because they trust in the Lord.
Their thoughts are strong
and they will not be afraid.
They know that they will win against their enemies.
They give their things to help poor people.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
They will be powerful
    and people will respect them.
10 When wicked people see this,
    they will be angry.
They will show their teeth in anger,
    but then they will disappear.
Whatever wicked people want,
    they will never get it.

Hallelujah, God helps weak people[d]

113 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Servants of the Lord, praise him!
Praise the name of the Lord!
Everyone should praise the Lord
    now and for ever!
The Lord deserves that people praise him,
from where the sun rises in the east,
to where it goes down in the west.
The Lord rules over all nations.
His glory is great
    higher than the heavens!
There is nobody like the Lord our God.
He sits on his throne high above us.
He bends down to look below,
at the sky and the earth.
He lifts poor people out of the dirt.
And he lifts up weak people from the ashes.
He gives them a seat with princes,
the princes who rule his own people.
He makes the wife who cannot give birth
into a happy mother of children.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Isaiah 1:1-9

Isaiah's vision and message

This is a vision that God showed to Isaiah, the son of Amoz. It was a message about his country, Judah, and the city of Jerusalem.[a] God showed it to Isaiah at the time when Uzziah, then Jotham, then Ahaz and then Hezekiah were kings of Judah.

God's people are guilty[b]

Hear the Lord, those who live in heaven![c] Listen to him, you people on the earth! Listen carefully because the Lord has spoken! He says, ‘I have helped my children to grow. I took care of them but now they have turned against me!

An ox knows its master. A donkey knows the place where its master feeds it. But Israel's people do not know me. My people do not understand me.’

Oh! Israel, you are a nation of people who do not obey me. The people are guilty of many evil things. Their sins are like a heavy weight on their backs. They are a family of people who do wicked things. They have turned away from the Lord, the Holy God of Israel. They have turned their backs against him.

You continue to fight against God. Why do you do that? God will continue to punish you. You are weak and you hurt all over. Your mind and your body have great pain. From the bottom of your feet, to the top of your head, everywhere hurts! There are wounds all over your body that are still bleeding. Nobody has cleaned your wounds or covered them. Nobody has put olive oil on them to make them better.

Your land has become useless. Fire has destroyed your towns and cities. Foreign people have taken the crops from your fields, while you stood there and watched. Strangers have destroyed everything in your country.

Jerusalem is now like a hut in a vineyard or in a field of crops. It stands there alone, with its enemies all round it.

Unless the Lord Almighty had left some of us alive, we would have become like Sodom. We would have been completely destroyed, like Gomorrah.

2 Peter 3:1-10

The Lord Jesus will certainly come back to earth

My friends, this is the second letter that I have written to you. I have written both these letters to help you to understand some things. You already know these things. I want you to think about them in a good way. I want you to remember the messages from God that his own prophets spoke a long time ago. Also, I want you to remember what our Lord Jesus told you to do. He is the one who saves us. He sent us, his apostles, to teach you his message.

The first thing that you should understand is this. In the last days of this world, some people will laugh at you because you believe in God.[a] These people will do whatever bad things they want to do. They will say: ‘Christ promised that he would return to this world. But he has not returned! Our ancestors have already died, but since God made the world in the beginning, nothing has changed.’

These people choose to forget things that they really know. A long time ago, God spoke his word and he made the sky and the earth. He caused land to come up through water. He made the land to be separate from the water.[b] Also, God used water to destroy that same world long ago. He spoke his word and he covered the land with water.[c] But God has also spoken his word to say what will happen to the world in a future time. The sky and the earth that we see now will continue for a time. But God is keeping them until the day when he will destroy them with fire. On that day he will judge all people. He will destroy the people who have turned away from him.

My friends, here is one thing that you must remember. In the Lord God's mind, one day and 1,000 years are the same. For him, 1,000 years is like a single day. The Lord is not being slow to do what he has promised to do. Some people may think that he is being slow to do it. But he is being patient with you. He does not want to destroy anyone. He wants all people to turn away from the wrong things that they do.

10 The great day of the Lord will suddenly happen. That will surprise people, like when someone comes to rob them. There will be a very loud noise in the sky. The whole sky will go away. Fire will burn the whole universe and it will destroy everything. The earth and everything that people have made will then become clear.[d]

Matthew 25:1-13

Jesus tells a story about ten young women

25 Jesus said, ‘I will tell you another story to show what the kingdom of heaven is like. There were ten young women who were going to a marriage party. They took their lamps with them and they went to meet the man who was marrying a wife. Five of these young women were silly. The other five young women were wise. The silly women took their lamps with them, but they did not take any extra oil with them. The five wise women took jars of oil with their lamps. The man who was marrying a wife did not come for a long time. So all the young women became tired, and they went to sleep.

In the middle of the night, someone shouted out, “The man is coming! Come out to meet him!”

The ten young women woke up. Then they prepared their lamps to make them work well. The five silly young women said to the other five young women, “Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are not giving much light.” The wise women replied, “If we did that, then there would not be enough oil for all of us. You must go instead to the people who sell oil. You must buy some oil for yourselves.”

10 So these five women went to buy some oil. While they were away, the man arrived for the marriage party. The five wise women were ready. They went with him into the house for the party. Then the servants shut the door.

11 Later, the five silly women also came to the house. They said, “Sir, Sir, please open the door for us.” 12 But he replied, “I tell you, I do not know you.” ’

13 Then Jesus said to the people, ‘So you must watch carefully. You do not know on what day or at what time I will return.’[a]
