Psalm 120

A Cry for Truth and Peace

A song of ascents.

In my distress I called to the Lord,
and He answered me.(A)
Lord, deliver me from lying lips
and a deceitful tongue.”(B)

What will He give you,
and what will He do to you,
you deceitful tongue?(C)
A warrior’s sharp arrows
with burning charcoal![a](D)

What misery that I have stayed in Meshech,[b](E)
that I have lived among the tents of Kedar![c](F)
I have lived too long
with those who hate peace.(G)
I am for peace; but when I speak,
they are for war.(H)

Psalm 121

The Lord Our Protector

A song of ascents.

I lift my eyes toward the mountains.
Where will my help come from?(I)
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(J)

He will not allow your foot to slip;
your Protector will not slumber.(K)
Indeed, the Protector of Israel
does not slumber or sleep.(L)

The Lord protects you;
the Lord is a shelter right by your side.[d](M)
The sun will not strike you by day
or the moon by night.(N)

The Lord will protect you from all harm;
He will protect your life.(O)
The Lord will protect your coming and going
both now and forever.(P)

Psalm 122

A Prayer for Jerusalem

A Davidic song of ascents.

I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”(Q)
Our feet are standing
within your gates, Jerusalem(R)

Jerusalem, built as a city should be,
solidly joined together,(S)
where the tribes, Yahweh’s tribes, go up
to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.(T)
(This is an ordinance for Israel.(U))
There, thrones for judgment are placed,
thrones of the house of David.(V)

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you prosper;(W)
may there be peace within your walls,
prosperity within your fortresses.”(X)
Because of my brothers and friends,
I will say, “Peace be with you.”(Y)
Because of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your good.(Z)

Psalm 123

Looking for God’s Favor

A song of ascents.

I lift my eyes to You,
the One enthroned in heaven.(AA)
Like a servant’s eyes on his master’s hand,
like a servant girl’s eyes on her mistress’s hand,
so our eyes are on the Lord our God
until He shows us favor.(AB)

Show us favor, Lord, show us favor,
for we’ve had more than enough contempt.(AC)
We’ve had more than enough
scorn from the arrogant
and contempt from the proud.(AD)

Psalm 124

The Lord Is on Our Side

A Davidic song of ascents.

If the Lord had not been on our side—
let Israel say—
If the Lord had not been on our side(AE)
when men attacked us,(AF)
then they would have swallowed us alive
in their burning anger against us.(AG)
Then the waters would have engulfed us;
the torrent would have swept over us;
the raging waters would have swept over us.(AH)

Praise the Lord,
who has not let us be ripped apart by their teeth.(AI)
We have escaped like a bird from the hunter’s net;
the net is torn, and we have escaped.(AJ)
Our help is in the name of Yahweh,
the Maker of heaven and earth.(AK)

Psalm 125

Israel’s Stability

A song of ascents.

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion.
It cannot be shaken; it remains forever.(AL)
Jerusalem—the mountains surround her.
And the Lord surrounds His people,
both now and forever.(AM)

The scepter of the wicked will not remain
over the land allotted to the righteous,
so that the righteous will not apply their hands to injustice.(AN)
Do what is good, Lord, to the good,
to those whose hearts are upright.(AO)
But as for those who turn aside to crooked ways,
the Lord will banish them with the evildoers.(AP)

Peace be with Israel.(AQ)

Psalm 126

Zion’s Restoration

A song of ascents.

When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,[e]
we were like those who dream.(AR)
Our mouths were filled with laughter then,(AS)
and our tongues with shouts of joy.(AT)
Then they said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”(AU)
The Lord had done great things for us;
we were joyful.(AV)

Restore our fortunes,[f] Lord,
like watercourses in the Negev.(AW)
Those who sow in tears
will reap with shouts of joy.(AX)
Though one goes along weeping,
carrying the bag of seed,
he will surely come back with shouts of joy,
carrying his sheaves.(AY)

Psalm 127

The Blessing of the Lord

A Solomonic song of ascents.

Unless the Lord builds a house,
its builders labor over it in vain;(AZ)
unless the Lord watches over a city,
the watchman stays alert in vain.(BA)
In vain you get up early and stay up late,
working hard to have enough food—
yes, He gives sleep to the one He loves.[g](BB)

Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord,
children, a reward.(BC)
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior
are the sons born in one’s youth.(BD)
Happy is the man who has filled his quiver with them.(BE)
Such men will never be put to shame
when they speak with their enemies at the city gate.(BF)

Judges 18:1-15

Dan’s Invasion and Idolatry

18 In those days, there was no king in Israel,(A) and the Danite tribe was looking for territory to occupy. Up to that time no territory had been captured by them among the tribes of Israel. So the Danites sent out five brave men(B) from all their clans, from Zorah and Eshtaol,(C) to scout(D) out the land and explore it. They told them, “Go and explore the land.”

They came to the hill country of Ephraim as far as the home of Micah and spent the night there. While they were near Micah’s home, they recognized the speech of the young Levite. So they went over to him and asked, “Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? What is keeping you here?” He told them what Micah had done for him and that he had hired him as his priest.

Then they said to him, “Please inquire of God so we will know if we will have a successful journey.”

The priest told them, “Go in peace. The Lord is watching over the journey you are going on.”

The five men left and came to Laish. They saw that the people who were there were living securely, in the same way as the Sidonians, quiet and unsuspecting. There was nothing lacking[a] in the land and no oppressive ruler. They were far from the Sidonians, having no alliance with anyone.[b]

When the men went back to their clans at Zorah and Eshtaol, their people asked them, “What did you find out?”

They answered, “Come on, let’s go up against them, for we have seen the land, and it is very good. Why wait? Don’t hesitate to go and invade and take possession of the land! 10 When you get there, you will come to an unsuspecting people and a spacious land, for God has handed it over to you. It is a place where nothing on earth is lacking.”(E) 11 Six hundred Danites departed from Zorah and Eshtaol armed with weapons of war. 12 They went up and camped at Kiriath-jearim(F) in Judah. This is why the place is called the Camp of Dan[c] to this day; it is west of Kiriath-jearim. 13 From there they traveled to the hill country of Ephraim and arrived at Micah’s house.

14 The five men who had gone to scout out the land of Laish told their brothers, “Did you know that there are an ephod, household gods, and a carved image overlaid with silver[d] in these houses? Now think about what you should do.” 15 So they detoured there and went to the house of the young Levite at the home of Micah and greeted him.

Acts 8:1-13

Saul the Persecutor

Saul agreed with putting him to death.

On that day a severe persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the land of Judea and Samaria.(A) Devout men buried Stephen and mourned deeply over him. Saul,(B) however, was ravaging the church. He would enter house after house, drag off men and women, and put them in prison.(C)

Philip in Samaria

So those who were scattered went on their way preaching the message of good news. Philip went down to a[a] city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them.(D) The crowds paid attention with one mind to what Philip said, as they heard and saw the signs he was performing. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.(E) So there was great joy in that city.

The Response of Simon

A man named Simon had previously practiced sorcery in that city and astounded the Samaritan people, while claiming to be somebody great.(F) 10 They all paid attention to him, from the least of them to the greatest, and they said, “This man is called the Great Power of God!”[b](G) 11 They were attentive to him because he had astounded them with his sorceries for a long time. 12 But when they believed Philip, as he preached the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.(H) 13 Then even Simon himself believed. And after he was baptized, he went around constantly with[c] Philip and was astounded as he observed the signs and great miracles(I) that were being performed.

John 5:30-47

30 “I can do nothing on My own. I judge only as I hear, and My judgment(A) is righteous,(B) because I do not seek My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.(C)

Four Witnesses to Jesus

31 “If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.[a] 32 There is Another who testifies about Me, and I know that the testimony He gives about Me is valid.[b](D) 33 You have sent messengers to John, and he has testified to the truth.(E) 34 I don’t receive man’s testimony, but I say these things so that you may be saved. 35 John[c](F) was a burning and shining lamp,(G) and for a time you were willing to enjoy his light.(H)

36 “But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given Me to accomplish.(I) These very works I am doing testify about Me that the Father has sent(J) Me. 37 The Father who sent Me has Himself testified(K) about Me. You have not heard His voice at any time, and you haven’t seen His form.(L) 38 You don’t have His word living in you, because you don’t believe the One He sent. 39 You pore over[d] the Scriptures(M) because you think you have eternal life in them, yet they testify about Me.(N) 40 And you are not willing(O) to come to Me(P) so that you may have life.

41 “I do not accept glory(Q) from men, 42 but I know you—that you have no love for God(R) within you. 43 I have come in My Father’s name,(S) yet you don’t accept Me.(T) If someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. 44 How can you believe? While accepting glory from one another, you don’t seek the glory that comes from the only(U) God.(V) 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father. Your accuser is Moses,(W) on whom you have set your hope. 46 For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me, because he wrote about Me. 47 But if you don’t believe his writings,(X) how will you believe My words?”(Y)
