Psalm 25

A Prayer for God to Guide

Of David.

25 Lord, I ·give myself [L lift my soul] to you;
    my God, I ·trust [have confidence in] you.
Do not let me be ·disgraced [shamed];
    do not let my enemies ·laugh at [triumph/exult over] me.
No one who ·trusts [hopes in; waits on] you will be ·disgraced [shamed],
    but those who ·sin [betray; are treacherous] without excuse will be ·disgraced [shamed].

Lord, ·tell me [make me know] your ways.
    ·Show [L Teach] me ·how to live [L your paths].
·Guide [Lead] me in your truth,
    and teach me, my God, my ·Savior [Helper; Victor].
    I ·trust [hope in; wait on] you all day long.
Lord, remember your ·mercy [compassion] and ·love [loyalty; covenant love]
    that you have shown since long ago.
Do not remember the sins
    and ·wrong things I did when I was young [transgressions of my youth].
But remember ·to love me [L according to your love/loyalty/covenant love] always
    ·because you are good [on account of your goodness], Lord.

The Lord is good and ·right [upright; virtuous];
    he ·points [instructs] sinners to the right way.
He shows those who are humble how to do right,
    and he teaches them his ways.
10 All the Lord’s ·ways [paths] are ·loving [loyal] and ·true [reliable]
    for those who ·follow [keep; guard] the demands of his ·agreement [covenant].
11 For the sake of your ·name [reputation], Lord,
    forgive my many sins.
12 ·Are there [L Who are…?] those who ·respect [fear] the Lord [Prov. 1:7]?
    He will ·point [teach] them ·to the best way [L the way they should choose].
13 ·They will enjoy a good life [L Their soul will dwell/lodge in goodness],
    and their ·children [L seed] will inherit the ·land [or earth].
14 The Lord ·tells his secrets to [confides in; or makes friends with] those who ·respect [fear] him;
    he ·tells them about [makes known to them] his ·agreement [covenant].
15 My eyes are always ·looking to the Lord for help [L toward the Lord].
    He will ·keep me [L remove my feet] from any traps.
16 Turn to me and ·have mercy on [L be gracious to] me,
    because I am lonely and hurting.
17 ·My troubles have [L The distress of my heart has] ·grown larger [widened];
    ·free me from [bring me out of] my ·problems [anguish; distress].
18 Look at my ·suffering [affliction] and troubles,
    and ·take away [forgive] all my sins.
19 Look at how many enemies I have!
    See how ·much [L violently] they hate me!
20 Protect me and ·save [rescue; T deliver] me.
    I ·trust [find refuge in] you, so do not let me be ·disgraced [shamed].
21 My hope is in you,
    so may ·goodness [blamelessness; innocence] and ·honesty [virtue] guard me.
22 God, ·save [redeem; ransom] Israel from all their ·troubles [distress]!

Psalm 9

Thanksgiving for Victory

For the director of music. To the tune of “The Death of the Son.” A psalm of David.

I will ·praise [or give thanks to] you, Lord, with all my heart.
    I will ·tell [recount] all ·the miracles you have done [your wonderful deeds].
I will be happy and rejoice because of you;
    God Most High, I will sing praises to your name.

My enemies turn back;
    they ·are overwhelmed [L stumble] and ·die [perish] ·because of [or before] you.
You have ·heard [upheld; maintained] my ·complaint [just cause; or right and my cause];
    you sat on your throne and judged ·by what was right [righteously].
You ·spoke strongly against the [rebuked; reproved] foreign nations and destroyed the wicked;
    you ·wiped out [blotted out; erased] their names forever and ever.
The enemy is ·gone [done; a ruin] forever.
    You ·destroyed [uprooted] their cities;
·no one even remembers them [L their memory perishes].

But the Lord ·rules [is enthroned; L sits] forever.
    He ·sits on his throne to judge [L has established his throne for justice/judgment],
and he will judge the world ·in fairness [with righteousness];
    he will decide what is fair for the ·nations [peoples; 96:10; 98:9].
The Lord ·defends [L is a refuge for] those who ·suffer [are oppressed/exploited];
    ·he defends them [L a refuge] in times of ·trouble [distress].
10 Those who know ·the Lord [L your name] trust ·him [L you],
    because ·he [L you] will not ·leave [abandon; forsake] those who ·come to him [L seek you; Deut. 31:6, 8; Matt. 28:20; Heb. 13:5].

11 Sing praises to the Lord who ·is king on Mount [L dwells on] Zion [C the location of the Temple].
    Tell ·the nations [L among the peoples] what he has done.
12 ·He remembers who the murderers are [or The one who avenges blood remembers them; C God];
    he will not forget the cries of those who suffer.
13 Lord, ·have mercy on [be gracious toward] me.
    See how ·my enemies [L those who hate me] ·hurt [afflict; persecute] me.
    ·Do not let me go through [L Lift me up from] the gates of death.
14 Then, at the gates of ·Jerusalem [the daughter of Zion; C a name of Jerusalem], I will ·praise you [L declare your praises];
    I will rejoice ·because you saved me [L in your salvation].

15 The nations have ·fallen [L sunk] into the pit they ·dug [L made].
    Their feet are caught in the nets they ·laid [L hid].
16 The Lord has made himself known by ·his fair decisions [L the judgments he has made];
    the wicked get trapped by ·what they do [L the deeds of their palms/hands]. ·Higgaion [C a musical notation]. ·Selah [Interlude]

17 Wicked people will ·go [L return] to the ·grave [or underworld; L Sheol],
    and so will all ·those who [L the nations that] forget God.
18 But those who ·have troubles [are afflicted] will not always be forgotten.
    The hopes of the ·poor [oppressed; exploited] will never ·die [perish].

19 Lord, rise up and don’t let people ·think they are strong [L prevail].
    Judge the nations in your presence.
20 ·Teach them to fear you [or Strike them with terror; Deut. 4:34; 28:8; 34:12], Lord.
    The nations must learn that they are ·only human [mere mortals]. ·Selah [Interlude]

Psalm 15

What the Lord Demands

A psalm of David.

15 Lord, who may ·enter [dwell/abide/sojourn in] your Holy Tent [C the Tabernacle]?
Who may live on your holy mountain [C Mount Zion]?

Only those who ·are innocent [walk innocently]
    and who do ·what is right [righteousness; 1:1; Job 1:1].
Such people speak the truth from their hearts
    and do not ·tell lies about others [slander with their tongue].
They do no ·wrong [evil] to their neighbors
    and do not ·gossip [L raise a reproachful matter with their associates].
·They do not respect hateful people [L The wicked are despised in their eyes]
    but honor those who ·honor [L fear] the Lord.
They keep their promises to their neighbors,
    even when it hurts.
They do not charge interest on money they lend [Ex. 22:25–27; Lev. 25:35–36; Deut. 23:19]
    and do not take ·money [a bribe] to hurt innocent people [Ex. 23:8; Deut. 16:19].
Whoever does all these things will never be ·destroyed [L moved].

Joshua 2:1-14

Spies Sent to Jericho

Joshua son of Nun secretly sent out two spies from ·Acacia [L Shittim; C a Hebrew word meaning “acacia”] and said to them, “Go and ·look at [check out] the land, particularly at the city of Jericho.”

So the men went to Jericho and ·stayed [lodged] at the house of a prostitute named Rahab.

Someone told the king of Jericho, “[L Look; T Behold] Some men from Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.”

So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house. They have come to spy out our whole land.”

But the woman had hidden the two men. She said, “They did come here, but I didn’t know where they came from. In the evening, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know where they went, but if you go quickly, maybe you can catch them.” (The woman had taken the men up to the roof and had hidden them there under stalks of flax that she had spread out.) So the king’s men went out looking for the spies on the road that leads to the ·crossings [fords] of the Jordan River. The city gate was closed just after the king’s men left the city.

Before the spies went to sleep for the night, Rahab went up to the roof. She said to them, “I know the Lord has given this land to your people. ·You frighten us very much [L A terror of you has fallen on us]. Everyone living in this land is ·terribly afraid of [L melting away before] you 10 because we have heard how the Lord dried up the ·Red Sea [or Sea of Reeds] when you came out of Egypt [Ex. 14:15–31]. We have heard how you ·destroyed [or devoted to the Lord for destruction; see 6:17; Deut. 20:15–18] Sihon and Og, two Amorite kings who lived ·east of [beyond] the Jordan. 11 When we heard this, ·we were very frightened [L our hearts melted]. ·Now our men are afraid to fight you [L And there rose up no spirit/breath in a man because of you] because the Lord your God ·rules [L is God in] the heavens above and the earth below! 12 So now, ·promise [swear to] me ·before [or by] the Lord that you will show ·kindness [loyalty] to my family just as I showed ·kindness [loyalty] to you. Give me ·some proof [a sure sign; a solemn pledge] that you will do this. 13 Allow my father, mother, brothers, sisters, and all of their families to live. ·Save [Rescue; Preserve] us from death.”

14 The men agreed and said, “It will be our lives for your lives if you don’t tell anyone what we are doing. When the Lord gives us the land, we will be ·kind [loyal] and ·true [faithful] to you.”

Romans 11:1-12

God Shows Mercy to All People

11 So I ask: Did God ·throw out [cast away; reject] his people? ·No [Absolutely not; May it never be; 9:14]! I myself am an Israelite from the ·family [descendants; L seed] of Abraham, from the tribe of Benjamin. God has not ·thrown out [cast away; rejected] his people, whom he ·chose [or knew] ·long ago [from the beginning; L beforehand]. ·Surely you know [L Do you not know…?] what the Scripture says about Elijah, how he ·prayed [appealed; complained] to God against the people of Israel. “Lord,” he said, “they have killed your prophets, and they have ·destroyed [torn/burned down] your altars. I am the only one left, and now they are ·trying to kill me, too [seeking my life; 1 Kin. 19:10, 14].” But what ·answer did God give Elijah [L was the divine response]? He said, “But I have ·left [kept for myself] seven thousand ·people [or men] in Israel who have not bowed ·down [L the knee] before Baal [1 Kin. 19:18].” It is the same now. There ·are a few people [is a remnant] that God has chosen by his grace. And if he chose them by grace, it is not ·for the things they have done [by works]. If they could be made God’s people by ·what they did [works], God’s gift of grace would ·not really [or no longer] be a gift.

·So this is what has happened [What follows from this? L What then?]: ·The people of Israel [L Israel] did not ·succeed in [attain; obtain; find] what they were ·striving [looking; seeking] for, but the ·ones God chose [elect] did ·succeed [attain/obtain/find it]. The ·others [rest] were ·made stubborn and refused to listen to God [L hardened]. As it is written in the Scriptures:

“God gave the people a ·dull mind [L spirit of stupor/insensitivity] so they could not understand [Is. 29:10].”
“He ·closed their eyes so they [or gave them eyes that] could not see
    and ·their ears so they [or gave them ears that] could not hear.
This continues until today [Deut. 29:4].”

And David says:

“Let their ·own feasts [L table] ·trap them and cause their ruin [L become a snare and a trap],
    becoming a ·stumbling block [pitfall] and ·paying them back [their retribution].
10 Let their eyes be ·closed [L darkened] so they cannot see
    and their backs be ·forever [or continually] ·weak from troubles [L bent over; Ps. 69:22–23].”

11 So I ask: When ·the Jews [L they] fell, did ·that fall destroy them [or they fall beyond recovery]? ·No [Absolutely not; May it never be; 11:1]! But their ·failure [transgression; violation] brought salvation to the Gentiles, in order to make ·the Jews [L them] jealous. 12 [L But if…] Their ·failure [transgression/violation] brought ·rich blessings [L riches] for the world, and their ·loss [defeat; failure] brought ·rich blessings [L riches] for the Gentiles. ·So surely the world will receive much richer blessings [L How much more…!] ·when enough Jews become the kind of people God wants [or when the appointed number of Jews is saved; or when the nation as a whole is restored; L at their fullness].

Matthew 25:1-13

A Story About Ten Bridesmaids

25 “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten ·bridesmaids [L virgins] who took their lamps and went to ·wait for [meet] the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were ·wise [sensible; prudent]. The five foolish ·bridesmaids [L virgins] took their lamps, but they did not take more oil for the lamps to burn. The ·wise [sensible; prudent] ·bridesmaids [L virgins] took their lamps and more oil in ·jars [flasks]. Because the bridegroom was ·late [delayed], they became ·sleepy [drowsy] and went to sleep.

“At midnight someone cried out, ‘·The bridegroom is coming [L Look, the bridegroom]! Come and meet him!’ Then all the ·bridesmaids [L virgins] woke up and ·got their lamps ready [trimmed their lamps]. But the foolish ones said to the ·wise [sensible; prudent], ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ The ·wise [sensible; prudent] bridesmaids answered, ‘No, the oil we have might not be enough ·for all of us [L for us and for you]. Go to the people who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

10 “So while ·the five foolish bridesmaids [L they] went to buy oil, the bridegroom came. The bridesmaids who were ready went in with the bridegroom to the wedding feast. Then the door was ·closed and locked [L shut].

11 “Later the others came back and said, ‘·Sir, sir, [Lord, lord] open the door to let us in.’ 12 But the bridegroom answered, ‘I tell you the truth, I don’t know you.’

13 “So ·always be ready [stay awake; be alert; keep watch], because you don’t know the day or the hour [C the Son of Man will come].
