bow in worship at His holy mountain,
for the Lord our God is holy.(N)

Psalm 94-95

Psalm 94

The Just Judge

Lord, God of vengeance—
God of vengeance, appear.(A)
Rise up, Judge of the earth;
repay the proud what they deserve.(B)
Lord, how long will the wicked—
how long will the wicked gloat?(C)

They pour out arrogant words;
all the evildoers boast.(D)
Lord, they crush Your people;
they afflict Your heritage.(E)
They kill the widow and the foreigner
and murder the fatherless.(F)
They say, “The Lord doesn’t see it.
The God of Jacob doesn’t pay attention.”(G)

Pay attention, you stupid people!
Fools, when will you be wise?(H)
Can the One who shaped the ear not hear,
the One who formed the eye not see?(I)
10 The One who instructs nations,
the One who teaches man knowledge—
does He not discipline?(J)
11 The Lord knows man’s thoughts;
they are meaningless.(K)

12 Lord, happy is the man You discipline
and teach from Your law(L)
13 to give him relief from troubled times
until a pit is dug for the wicked.(M)
14 The Lord will not forsake His people
or abandon His heritage,(N)
15 for justice will again be righteous,
and all the upright in heart will follow[a] it.(O)

16 Who stands up for me against the wicked?
Who takes a stand for me against evildoers?(P)
17 If the Lord had not been my helper,
I would soon rest in the silence of death.(Q)
18 If I say, “My foot is slipping,”
Your faithful love will support me, Lord.(R)
19 When I am filled with cares,
Your comfort brings me joy.(S)

20 Can a corrupt throne—
one that creates trouble by law—
become Your ally?(T)
21 They band together against the life of the righteous
and condemn the innocent to death.(U)
22 But the Lord is my refuge;
my God is the rock of my protection.(V)
23 He will pay them back for their sins
and destroy them for their evil.
The Lord our God will destroy them.(W)

Psalm 95

Worship and Warning

Come, let us shout joyfully to the Lord,
shout triumphantly to the rock of our salvation!(X)
Let us enter His presence with thanksgiving;
let us shout triumphantly to Him in song.(Y)

For the Lord is a great God,
a great King above all gods.(Z)
The depths of the earth are in His hand,
and the mountain peaks are His.(AA)
The sea is His; He made it.
His hands formed the dry land.(AB)

Come, let us worship and bow down;
let us kneel before the Lord our Maker.(AC)
For He is our God,
and we are the people of His pasture,
the sheep under His care.[b](AD)

Today, if you hear His voice:(AE)
Do not harden your hearts as at Meribah,
as on that day at Massah in the wilderness(AF)
where your fathers tested Me;
they tried Me, though they had seen what I did.(AG)
10 For 40 years I was disgusted with that generation;
I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray;
they do not know My ways.”(AH)
11 So I swore in My anger,
“They will not enter My rest.”(AI)

1 Samuel 16:1-13

Samuel Anoints David

16 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long are you going to mourn for Saul,(A) since I have rejected him as king over Israel?(B) Fill your horn with oil(C) and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem(D) because I have selected a king from his sons.”

Samuel asked, “How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me!”

The Lord answered, “Take a young cow with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’(E) Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will let you know what you are to do.(F) You are to anoint for Me the one I indicate to you.”(G)

Samuel did what the Lord directed and went to Bethlehem.(H) When the elders of the town met him, they trembled[a] and asked, “Do[b] you come in peace?”(I)

“In peace,” he replied. “I’ve come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves(J) and come with me to the sacrifice.”[c] Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab(K) and said, “Certainly the Lord’s anointed one is here before Him.”

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or his stature, because I have rejected him. Man does not see what the Lord sees,[d] for man sees what is visible,[e] but the Lord sees the heart.”(L)

Jesse called Abinadab(M) and presented him to Samuel. “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either,” Samuel said. Then Jesse presented Shammah,(N) but Samuel said, “The Lord hasn’t chosen this one either.” 10 After Jesse presented seven of his sons to him, Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord hasn’t chosen any of these.” 11 Samuel asked him, “Are these all the sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,”(O) he answered, “but right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send for him. We won’t sit down to eat until he gets here.” 12 So Jesse sent for him. He had beautiful eyes and a healthy,[f] handsome appearance.(P)

Then the Lord said, “Anoint him, for he is the one.”(Q) 13 So Samuel took the horn of oil, anointed him(R) in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord took control of David from that day forward.(S) Then Samuel set out and went to Ramah.

Ephesians 3:14-21

Prayer for Spiritual Power

14 For this reason I kneel(A) before the Father[a] 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. 16 I pray that He may grant you, according to the riches(B) of His glory,(C) to be strengthened with power(D) in the inner man(E) through His Spirit, 17 and that the Messiah may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love,(F) 19 and to know the Messiah’s love that surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

20 Now to Him who is able(G) to do above and beyond all that we ask or think(H) according to the power(I) that works in us— 21 to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.(J)

Matthew 8:18-27

Following Jesus

18 When Jesus saw large crowds[a](A) around Him, He gave the order to go to the other side of the sea.[b] 19 A scribe approached Him and said,(B) “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go!”

20 Jesus told him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man(C) has no place to lay His head.”

21 “Lord,” another of His disciples said, “first let me go bury my father.”[c]

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Wind and Wave Obey the Master

23 As He got into the[d] boat,(D) His disciples(E) followed Him. 24 Suddenly, a violent storm arose on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves. But He was sleeping. 25 So the disciples came and woke Him up, saying, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!”

26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, you of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea.(F) And there was a great calm.

27 The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this?—even the winds and the sea obey(G) Him!”
