Psalm 20[a]

Prayer for the King in Time of War

For the leader. A psalm of David.

I

The Lord answer you in time of distress;
    the name of the God of Jacob defend you!
May he send you help from the sanctuary,
    from Zion be your support.(A)
May he remember[b] your every offering,
    graciously accept your burnt offering,
Selah
Grant what is in your heart,
    fulfill your every plan.
May we shout for joy at your victory,[c]
    raise the banners in the name of our God.
    The Lord grant your every petition!

II

Now I know the Lord gives victory
    to his anointed.(B)
He will answer him from the holy heavens
    with a strong arm that brings victory.
Some rely on chariots, others on horses,
    but we on the name of the Lord our God.(C)
They collapse and fall,
    but we stand strong and firm.(D)
10 Lord, grant victory to the king;
    answer when we call upon you.

Psalm 21[d]

Thanksgiving and Assurances for the King

For the leader. A psalm of David.

I

Lord, the king finds joy in your power;(E)
    in your victory how greatly he rejoices!
You have granted him his heart’s desire;
    you did not refuse the request of his lips.
Selah
For you welcomed him with goodly blessings;
    you placed on his head a crown of pure gold.
He asked life of you;
    you gave it to him,
    length of days forever.(F)
Great is his glory in your victory;
    majesty and splendor you confer upon him.
You make him the pattern of blessings forever,
    you gladden him with the joy of your face.
For the king trusts in the Lord,
    stands firm through the mercy of the Most High.

II

Your hand will find all your enemies;
    your right hand will find your foes!
10 At the time of your coming
    you will make them a fiery furnace.
Then the Lord in his anger will consume them,
    devour them with fire.
11 Even their descendants you will wipe out from the earth,
    their offspring from the human race.
12 Though they intend evil against you,
    devising plots, they will not succeed,
13 For you will put them to flight;
    you will aim at their faces with your bow.

III

14 Arise, Lord, in your power!(G)
    We will sing and chant the praise of your might.

Psalm 110

Psalm 110[a]

God Appoints the King both King and Priest

A psalm of David.

The Lord says to my lord:[b]
    “Sit at my right hand,
    while I make your enemies your footstool.”(A)
The scepter of your might:
    the Lord extends your strong scepter from Zion.
    Have dominion over your enemies!
Yours is princely power from the day of your birth.
    In holy splendor before the daystar,
    like dew I begot you.(B)
The Lord has sworn and will not waver:
    “You are a priest forever in the manner of Melchizedek.”[c](C)
At your right hand is the Lord,
    who crushes kings on the day of his wrath,(D)
Who judges nations, heaps up corpses,
    crushes heads across the wide earth,
[d]Who drinks from the brook by the wayside
    and thus holds high his head.(E)

Psalm 116-117

Psalm 116[a]

Thanksgiving to God Who Saves from Death

I

I love the Lord, who listened
    to my voice in supplication,
Who turned an ear to me
    on the day I called.
I was caught by the cords of death;[b](A)
    the snares of Sheol had seized me;
    I felt agony and dread.
Then I called on the name of the Lord,
    “O Lord, save my life!”

II

Gracious is the Lord and righteous;
    yes, our God is merciful.(B)
The Lord protects the simple;
    I was helpless, but he saved me.
Return, my soul, to your rest;
    the Lord has been very good to you.(C)
For my soul has been freed from death,
    my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling.(D)
I shall walk before the Lord
    in the land of the living.[c](E)

III

10 [d]I kept faith, even when I said,
    “I am greatly afflicted!”(F)
11 I said in my alarm,
    “All men are liars!”(G)
12 How can I repay the Lord
    for all the great good done for me?
13 I will raise the cup of salvation[e]
    and call on the name of the Lord.
14 I will pay my vows to the Lord
    in the presence of all his people.
15 [f]Dear in the eyes of the Lord
    is the death of his devoted.(H)
16 Lord, I am your servant,
    your servant, the child of your maidservant;(I)
    you have loosed my bonds.
17 I will offer a sacrifice of praise
    and call on the name of the Lord.(J)
18 I will pay my vows to the Lord(K)
    in the presence of all his people,
19 In the courts of the house of the Lord,
    in your midst, O Jerusalem.
Hallelujah!

Psalm 117[g]

The Nations Called to Praise

Praise the Lord, all you nations!
    Extol him, all you peoples!(L)
His mercy for us is strong;
    the faithfulness of the Lord is forever.
Hallelujah!

Exodus 17

Chapter 17

Water from the Rock. From the wilderness of Sin the whole Israelite community journeyed by stages, as the Lord directed, and encamped at Rephidim.(A)

But there was no water for the people to drink, (B)and so they quarreled with Moses and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses replied to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you put the Lord to a test?” Here, then, in their thirst for water, the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “Why then did you bring us up out of Egypt? To have us die of thirst with our children and our livestock?” So Moses cried out to the Lord, “What shall I do with this people? A little more and they will stone me!” The Lord answered Moses: Go on ahead of the people, and take along with you some of the elders of Israel, holding in your hand, as you go, the staff with which you struck the Nile. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock in Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow from it for the people to drink.(C) Moses did this, in the sight of the elders of Israel. The place was named Massah and Meribah,[a] because the Israelites quarreled there and tested the Lord, saying, “Is the Lord in our midst or not?”(D)

Battle with Amalek. Then Amalek[b] came and waged war against Israel in Rephidim.(E) So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose some men for us, and tomorrow go out and engage Amalek in battle. I will be standing on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did as Moses told him: he engaged Amalek in battle while Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill. 11 As long as Moses kept his hands raised up, Israel had the better of the fight, but when he let his hands rest, Amalek had the better of the fight. 12 Moses’ hands, however, grew tired; so they took a rock and put it under him and he sat on it. Meanwhile Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady until sunset. 13 And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the sword.

14 Then the Lord said to Moses: Write this down in a book as something to be remembered, and recite it to Joshua:(F) I will completely blot out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. 15 Moses built an altar there, which he named Yahweh-nissi;[c] 16 for he said, “Take up the banner of the Lord![d] The Lord has a war against Amalek through the ages.”

1 Peter 4:7-19

The end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be serious and sober for prayers. (A)Above all, let your love for one another be intense, because love covers a multitude of sins.[a] Be hospitable to one another without complaining.(B) 10 As each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of God’s varied grace.(C) 11 Whoever preaches, let it be with the words of God; whoever serves, let it be with the strength that God supplies, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ,(D) to whom belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.[b]

IV. Advice to the Persecuted

Trial of Persecution.[c] 12 Beloved, do not be surprised that a trial by fire is occurring among you, as if something strange were happening to you.(E) 13 But rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when his glory is revealed you may also rejoice exultantly.(F) 14 If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.(G) 15 But let no one among you be made to suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as an intriguer. 16 But whoever is made to suffer as a Christian should not be ashamed but glorify God because of the name. 17 For it is time for the judgment to begin with the household of God; if it begins with us, how will it end for those who fail to obey the gospel of God?(H)

18 “And if the righteous one is barely saved,
    where will the godless and the sinner appear?”(I)

19 As a result, those who suffer in accord with God’s will hand their souls over to a faithful creator as they do good.

John 16:16-33

16 “A little while and you will no longer see me, and again a little while later and you will see me.”(A) 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What does this mean that he is saying to us, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me,’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they said, “What is this ‘little while’ [of which he speaks]? We do not know what he means.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Are you discussing with one another what I said, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Amen, amen, I say to you, you will weep and mourn, while the world rejoices; you will grieve, but your grief will become joy.(B) 21 When a woman is in labor, she is in anguish because her hour has arrived; but when she has given birth to a child, she no longer remembers the pain because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.(C) 22 So you also are now in anguish. But I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you.(D) 23 On that day you will not question me about anything. Amen, amen, I say to you, whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you.(E) 24 Until now you have not asked anything in my name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.

25 [a](F)“I have told you this in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures but I will tell you clearly about the Father. 26 On that day you will ask in my name, and I do not tell you that I will ask the Father for you.(G) 27 For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world. Now I am leaving the world and going back to the Father.”(H) 29 His disciples said, “Now you are talking plainly, and not in any figure of speech. 30 Now we realize that you know everything and that you do not need to have anyone question you. Because of this we believe that you came from God.”[b] 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you believe now? 32 Behold, the hour is coming and has arrived when each of you will be scattered[c] to his own home and you will leave me alone. But I am not alone, because the Father is with me.(I) 33 I have told you this so that you might have peace in me. In the world you will have trouble, but take courage, I have conquered the world.”(J)
