Psalm 28

My Strength

Of David.

Lord, I call to you;
my rock, do not be deaf to me.(A)
If you remain silent to me,
I will be like those going down to the Pit.(B)
Listen to the sound of my pleading
when I cry to you for help,
when I lift up my hands
toward your holy sanctuary.(C)

Do not drag me away with the wicked,
with the evildoers,
who speak in friendly ways with their neighbors
while malice is in their hearts.(D)
Repay them according to what they have done—
according to the evil of their deeds.
Repay them according to the work of their hands;
give them back what they deserve.(E)
Because they do not consider
what the Lord has done
or the work of his hands,
he will tear them down and not rebuild them.(F)

Blessed be the Lord,
for he has heard the sound of my pleading.(G)
The Lord is my strength and my shield;
my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.(H)
Therefore my heart celebrates,
and I give thanks to him with my song.(I)

The Lord is the strength of his people;[a]
he is a stronghold of salvation for his anointed.(J)
Save your people, bless your possession,
shepherd them, and carry them forever.(K)

Joy in the Morning

A psalm; a dedication song for the house. Of David.

I will exalt you, Lord,
because you have lifted me up(A)
and have not allowed my enemies
to triumph over me.(B)
Lord my God,
I cried to you for help, and you healed me.(C)
Lord, you brought me up from Sheol;(D)
you spared me from among those
going down[a] to the Pit.(E)

Sing to the Lord, you his faithful ones,
and praise his holy name.(F)
For his anger lasts only a moment,
but his favor, a lifetime.
Weeping may stay overnight,
but there is joy in the morning.(G)

When I was secure, I said,
“I will never be shaken.”(H)
Lord, when you showed your favor,
you made me stand like a strong mountain;(I)
when you hid your face, I was terrified.(J)
Lord, I called to you;
I sought favor from my Lord:(K)
“What gain is there in my death,
if I go down to the Pit?
Will the dust praise you?
Will it proclaim your truth?(L)
10 Lord, listen and be gracious to me;
Lord, be my helper.”(M)

11 You turned my lament into dancing;
you removed my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness,(N)
12 so that I can sing to you and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will praise you forever.(O)

2 Chronicles 24:17-22

17 However, after Jehoiada died, the rulers of Judah came and paid homage to the king. Then the king listened to them, 18 and they abandoned the temple of the Lord, the God of their ancestors, and served the Asherah poles and the idols.(A) So there was wrath(B) against Judah and Jerusalem for this guilt of theirs. 19 Nevertheless, he sent them prophets(C) to bring them back to the Lord; they admonished them, but the people would not listen.(D)

20 The Spirit of God enveloped[a](E) Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood above the people and said to them, “This is what God says, ‘Why are you transgressing the Lord’s commands so that you do not prosper?(F) Because you have abandoned the Lord, he has abandoned you.’”(G) 21 But they conspired against him and stoned him at the king’s command in the courtyard of the Lord’s temple.(H) 22 King Joash didn’t remember the kindness that Zechariah’s father Jehoiada had extended to him, but killed his son. While he was dying, he said, “May the Lord see and demand(I) an account.”

Acts 6:1-7

Seven Chosen to Serve

In those days, as the disciples(A) were increasing in number, there arose a complaint by the Hellenistic Jews against the Hebraic Jews that their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution.(B) The Twelve summoned the whole company of the disciples and said, “It would not be right for us to give up preaching the word of God to wait on tables. Brothers and sisters, select from among you seven men of good reputation,(C) full of the Spirit(D) and wisdom, whom we can appoint to this duty. But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.” This proposal pleased the whole company. So they chose Stephen,(E) a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolaus, a convert from Antioch.(F) They had them stand before the apostles, who prayed(G) and laid their hands on(H) them.

So the word of God spread, the disciples in Jerusalem increased(I) greatly in number, and a large group of priests became obedient to the faith.

Psalm 118

Thanksgiving for Victory

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his faithful love endures forever.(A)
Let Israel say,
“His faithful love endures forever.”(B)
Let the house of Aaron say,
“His faithful love endures forever.”(C)
Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His faithful love endures forever.”(D)

I called to the Lord in distress;(E)
the Lord answered me
and put me in a spacious place.[a](F)
The Lord is for me; I will not be afraid.
What can a mere mortal do to me?(G)
The Lord is my helper;
therefore, I will look in triumph on those who hate me.(H)

It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in humanity.(I)
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
than to trust in nobles.(J)

10 All the nations surrounded me;
in the name of the Lord I destroyed them.(K)
11 They surrounded me, yes, they surrounded me;
in the name of the Lord I destroyed them.(L)
12 They surrounded me like bees;(M)
they were extinguished like a fire among thorns;
in the name of the Lord I destroyed them.(N)
13 They[b] pushed me hard to make me fall,
but the Lord helped me.(O)
14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
he has become my salvation.(P)

15 There are shouts of joy and victory
in the tents of the righteous:
“The Lord’s right hand performs valiantly!(Q)
16 The Lord’s right hand is raised.
The Lord’s right hand performs valiantly!” (R)
17 I will not die, but I will live
and proclaim what the Lord has done.(S)
18 The Lord disciplined me severely
but did not give me over to death.(T)

19 Open the gates of righteousness for me;
I will enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.(U)
20 This is the Lord’s gate;
the righteous will enter through it.(V)
21 I will give thanks to you
because you have answered me
and have become my salvation.(W)
22 The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.(X)
23 This came from the Lord;
it is wondrous in our sight.(Y)
24 This is the day the Lord has made;
let’s rejoice and be glad in it.(Z)

25 Lord, save us!
Lord, please grant us success!(AA)
26 He who comes in the name
of the Lord is blessed.(AB)
From the house of the Lord we bless you.(AC)
27 The Lord is God and has given us light.
Bind the festival sacrifice with cords
to the horns of the altar.(AD)
28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks.
You are my God; I will exalt you.(AE)
29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
his faithful love endures forever.(AF)

Acts 7:59-8:8

59 While they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!” (A) 60 He knelt down and cried out with a loud voice,(B) “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” And after saying this, he fell asleep.(C)

Saul the Persecutor

Saul agreed with putting him to death.

On that day a severe persecution broke out against the church in Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout the land of Judea and Samaria.(D) Devout men buried Stephen and mourned deeply over him. Saul,(E) however, was ravaging the church. He would enter house after house, drag off men and women, and put them in prison.(F)

Philip in Samaria

So those who were scattered went on their way preaching the word. Philip went down to a[a] city in Samaria and proclaimed the Messiah to them.(G) The crowds were all paying attention to what Philip said, as they listened and saw the signs he was performing. For unclean spirits, crying out with a loud voice, came out of many who were possessed, and many who were paralyzed and lame were healed.(H) So there was great joy in that city.
