Book of Common Prayer
Zayin
49 Remember the word to Your servant,
[a]In which You have made me hope.
50 This is my (A)comfort in my misery,
That Your word has [b]revived me.
51 The arrogant (B)utterly deride me,
Yet I do not (C)turn aside from Your Law.
52 I have (D)remembered Your judgments from [c]of old, Lord,
And comfort myself.
53 Burning (E)indignation has seized me because of the wicked,
Who (F)abandon Your Law.
54 Your statutes are my songs
In the house of my (G)pilgrimage.
55 Lord, I (H)remember Your name (I)in the night,
And keep Your Law.
56 This has become mine,
[d]That I (J)comply with Your precepts.
Heth
57 The Lord is my (K)portion;
I have [e]promised to (L)keep Your words.
58 I (M)sought Your favor (N)with all my heart;
(O)Be gracious to me (P)according to Your [f]word.
59 I (Q)considered my ways
And turned my feet to Your testimonies.
60 I hurried and did not delay
To keep Your commandments.
61 The (R)snares of the wicked have surrounded me,
But I have (S)not forgotten Your Law.
62 At (T)midnight I will rise to give thanks to You
Because of Your (U)righteous judgments.
63 I am a (V)companion to all those who [g]fear You,
And to those who keep Your precepts.
64 (W)The earth is full of Your goodness, Lord;
(X)Teach me Your statutes.
Teth
65 You have treated Your servant well,
Lord, according to Your word.
66 Teach me good [h](Y)discernment and knowledge,
For I believe in Your commandments.
67 (Z)Before I was afflicted I went astray,
But now I keep Your word.
68 You are (AA)good and You (AB)do good;
(AC)Teach me Your statutes.
69 The arrogant [i]have (AD)forged a lie against me;
With all my heart I will (AE)comply with Your precepts.
70 Their heart is (AF)insensitive, like fat,
But I (AG)delight in Your Law.
71 It is (AH)good for me that I was afflicted,
So that I may learn Your statutes.
72 The (AI)Law of Your mouth is better to me
Than thousands of gold and silver pieces.
The Foolishness of Trusting in Riches.
For the music director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.
49 (A)Hear this, all peoples;
Listen, all (B)inhabitants of the world,
2 Both (C)low and high,
Rich and poor together.
3 My mouth will (D)speak wisdom,
And the meditation of my heart will be (E)understanding.
4 I will incline my ear to (F)a proverb;
(G)I will [a]express my (H)riddle on the harp.
5 Why should I (I)fear in days of adversity,
When the injustice of those who betray me surrounds me,
6 Those who (J)trust in their wealth
And boast in the abundance of their riches?
7 No one can by any means (K)redeem another
Or give God a (L)ransom for him—
8 For (M)the redemption of [b]his soul is priceless,
And he should cease imagining forever—
9 That he might (N)live on eternally,
That he might not [c](O)undergo decay.
10 For he sees that even (P)wise people die;
The (Q)foolish and the stupid alike perish
And (R)leave their wealth to others.
11 Their [d](S)inner thought is that their houses (T)are forever
And their dwelling places to all generations;
They have (U)named their lands after their own names.
12 But (V)man in his splendor will not endure;
He is like the animals that [e]perish.
13 This is the (W)way of those who are foolish,
And of those after them who (X)approve their words. Selah
14 Like sheep they sink down (Y)to [f]Sheol;
Death will be their shepherd;
And the (Z)upright will rule over them in the morning,
And their form shall be for [g]Sheol (AA)to consume
[h]So that they have no lofty home.
15 But God will (AB)redeem my soul from the [i]power of [j]Sheol,
For (AC)He will receive me. Selah
16 Do not be afraid (AD)when a person becomes rich,
When the splendor of his house is increased;
17 For when he dies, he will (AE)take nothing with him;
His [k]wealth will not descend after him.
18 Though while he lives he (AF)congratulates [l]himself—
And though people praise you when you do well for yourself—
19 [m]He will (AG)go to the generation of his fathers;
They will never see (AH)the light.
20 (AI)Mankind in its splendor, yet without understanding,
Is (AJ)like the animals that [n]perish.
Foolishness and Wickedness of People.
For the music director; according to [a]Mahalath. A [b]Maskil of David.
53 (A)The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, and have committed abominable injustice;
(B)There is no one who does good.
2 God has looked down from heaven upon the sons of mankind
To see if there is (C)anyone who [c]understands,
Who (D)seeks after God.
3 (E)Every one of them has turned aside; together they have become corrupt;
There is no one who does good, not even one.
4 Have the workers of injustice (F)no knowledge,
Who eat up My people like they ate bread,
And have not called upon God?
5 They were in great [d]fear there, (G)where no [e]fear had been;
For God (H)scattered the bones of [f]him who encamped against you;
You (I)put them to shame, because (J)God had rejected them.
6 Oh, that (K)the salvation of Israel would come from Zion!
When God restores the fortunes of His people,
Jacob shall rejoice, Israel shall be glad.
23 When Abigail saw David, she hurried and dismounted from her donkey, and fell on her face in front of David (A)and bowed herself to the ground. 24 She fell at his feet and said, “On me [a]alone, my lord, be the blame. And please let your slave speak [b]to you, and listen to the words of your slave. 25 Please do not let my lord [c]pay attention to this [d]worthless man, Nabal, for as his name is, so is he. [e]Nabal is his name, and stupidity is with him; but I your slave did not see the young men of my lord whom you sent.
26 “Now then, my lord, as the Lord lives, and as your soul lives, since the Lord has restrained you from [f]shedding blood, and (B)from [g]avenging yourself by your own hand, now then, (C)may your enemies and those who seek evil against my lord, be like Nabal. 27 And now let (D)this [h]gift which your servant has brought to my lord be given to the young men who [i]accompany my lord. 28 Please forgive (E)the offense of your slave; for (F)the Lord will certainly make for my lord an [j]enduring house, because my lord is (G)fighting the battles of the Lord, and (H)evil will not be found in you all your days. 29 Should anyone rise up to pursue you and to seek your [k]life, then the [l]life of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of the living with the Lord your God; but the [m]lives of your enemies (I)He will sling out [n]as from the hollow of a sling. 30 And when the Lord does for my lord in accordance with all the good that He has spoken concerning you, and (J)appoints you ruler over Israel, 31 this will not become an obstacle to you, or a [o]troubled heart to my lord, both by having shed blood without cause and by my lord’s having [p]avenged himself. (K)When the Lord deals well with my lord, then remember your slave.”
32 Then David said to Abigail, “(L)Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, who sent you this day to meet me, 33 and blessed be your discernment, and blessed be you, (M)who have kept me this day from [q]bloodshed and from [r]avenging myself by my own hand. 34 Nevertheless, as the Lord God of Israel lives, (N)who has restrained me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, there certainly would not have been left to Nabal until the morning light as much as one [s]male.” 35 So David accepted from her hand what she had brought him, and said to her, “(O)Go up to your house in peace. See, I have listened to [t]you and [u](P)granted your request.”
36 Then Abigail came to Nabal, and behold, he was having (Q)a feast in his house, like the feast of a king. And Nabal’s heart was cheerful within him, (R)for he was very drunk; so (S)she did not tell him anything [v]at all until the morning light. 37 But in the morning, when the wine had gone out of Nabal, his wife told him these things, and his heart died within him so that he became like a stone. 38 About ten days later, (T)the Lord struck Nabal and he died.
David Marries Abigail
39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, “Blessed be the Lord, who has (U)pleaded the cause of the shame inflicted on me by the hand of Nabal, and (V)has kept back His servant from evil. The Lord has also returned the evildoing of Nabal on his own head.” Then David sent [w](W)a proposal to Abigail, to take her as his wife. 40 When the servants of David came to Abigail at Carmel, they spoke to her, saying, “David has sent us to you to take you to him as his wife.” 41 And she got up (X)and bowed with her face to the ground, and said, “Behold, your slave is a servant (Y)to wash the feet of my lord’s servants.” 42 Then (Z)Abigail got up quickly, and rode on a donkey, with her five female attendants who [x]accompanied her; and she followed the messengers of David and became his wife.
43 David had also taken Ahinoam of (AA)Jezreel, and (AB)they both became his wives.
44 But Saul had given his daughter (AC)Michal, David’s wife, to Palti the son of Laish, who was from (AD)Gallim.
19 But (A)Jews came from (B)Antioch and (C)Iconium, and having won over the crowds, they (D)stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, thinking that he was dead. 20 But while (E)the disciples stood around him, he got up and entered the city. The next day he left with Barnabas for (F)Derbe. 21 And after they had (G)preached the gospel to that city and had (H)made a good number of disciples, they returned to (I)Lystra, to (J)Iconium, and to (K)Antioch, 22 strengthening the souls of (L)the disciples, encouraging them to continue in (M)the faith, and saying, “(N)It is through many tribulations that we must enter the kingdom of God.” 23 When (O)they had appointed (P)elders for them in every church, having (Q)prayed with fasting, they (R)entrusted them to the Lord in whom they had believed.
24 They passed through (S)Pisidia and came into (T)Pamphylia. 25 When they had spoken the word in (U)Perga, they went down to Attalia. 26 From there they sailed to (V)Antioch, (W)where they had been (X)entrusted to the grace of God for the work that they had [a]accomplished. 27 When they had arrived and gathered the church together, they began to (Y)report all the things that God had done with them and [b]how He had opened a (Z)door of faith to the Gentiles. 28 And they spent [c]a long time with (AA)the disciples.
Jesus Stills the Sea
35 (A)On that day, when evening came, He *said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side.” 36 After dismissing the crowd, they *took Him along with them (B)in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. 37 And a fierce gale of wind *developed, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling with water. 38 And yet Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they *woke Him and *said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 And He got up and (C)rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and [a]it became perfectly calm. 40 And He said to them, “Why are you [b]afraid? (D)Do you still have no faith?” 41 They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
