Psalm 131-135

Psalm 131

A song of ascents. Of David.

My heart is not proud,(A) Lord,
    my eyes are not haughty;(B)
I do not concern myself with great matters(C)
or things too wonderful for me.(D)
But I have calmed and quieted myself,(E)
    I am like a weaned child with its mother;
    like a weaned child I am content.(F)

Israel, put your hope(G) in the Lord
    both now and forevermore.(H)

Psalm 132(I)

A song of ascents.

Lord, remember David
    and all his self-denial.(J)

He swore an oath to the Lord,
he made a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(K)
“I will not enter my house(L)
    or go to my bed,
I will allow no sleep to my eyes
    or slumber to my eyelids,
till I find a place(M) for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

We heard it in Ephrathah,(N)
we came upon it in the fields of Jaar:[a](O)
“Let us go to his dwelling place,(P)
let us worship at his footstool,(Q) saying,
‘Arise, Lord,(R) and come to your resting place,
you and the ark of your might.
May your priests be clothed with your righteousness;(S)
may your faithful people(T) sing for joy.’”

10 For the sake of your servant David,
do not reject your anointed one.

11 The Lord swore an oath to David,(U)
a sure oath he will not revoke:
“One of your own descendants(V)
I will place on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant(W)
and the statutes I teach them,
then their sons will sit
on your throne(X) for ever and ever.”

13 For the Lord has chosen Zion,(Y)
he has desired it for his dwelling,(Z) saying,
14 “This is my resting place for ever and ever;(AA)
here I will sit enthroned,(AB) for I have desired it.
15 I will bless her with abundant provisions;
her poor I will satisfy with food.(AC)
16 I will clothe her priests(AD) with salvation,
and her faithful people will ever sing for joy.(AE)

17 “Here I will make a horn[b] grow(AF) for David
and set up a lamp(AG) for my anointed one.(AH)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(AI)
but his head will be adorned with a radiant crown.”(AJ)

Psalm 133

A song of ascents. Of David.

How good and pleasant it is
    when God’s people live together(AK) in unity!(AL)

It is like precious oil poured on the head,(AM)
    running down on the beard,
running down on Aaron’s beard,
down on the collar of his robe.
It is as if the dew(AN) of Hermon(AO)
    were falling on Mount Zion.(AP)
For there the Lord bestows his blessing,(AQ)
    even life forevermore.(AR)

Psalm 134

A song of ascents.

Praise the Lord, all you servants(AS) of the Lord
who minister(AT) by night(AU) in the house of the Lord.
Lift up your hands(AV) in the sanctuary(AW)
    and praise the Lord.(AX)

May the Lord bless you from Zion,(AY)
he who is the Maker of heaven(AZ) and earth.

Psalm 135(BA)

Praise the Lord.[c]

Praise the name of the Lord;
praise him, you servants(BB) of the Lord,
you who minister in the house(BC) of the Lord,
in the courts(BD) of the house of our God.

Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good;(BE)
sing praise to his name,(BF) for that is pleasant.(BG)
For the Lord has chosen Jacob(BH) to be his own,
Israel to be his treasured possession.(BI)

I know that the Lord is great,(BJ)
that our Lord is greater than all gods.(BK)
The Lord does whatever pleases him,(BL)
in the heavens and on the earth,(BM)
in the seas and all their depths.
He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth;
he sends lightning with the rain(BN)
and brings out the wind(BO) from his storehouses.(BP)

He struck down the firstborn(BQ) of Egypt,
the firstborn of people and animals.
He sent his signs(BR) and wonders into your midst, Egypt,
against Pharaoh and all his servants.(BS)
10 He struck down many(BT) nations
    and killed mighty kings—
11 Sihon(BU) king of the Amorites,(BV)
    Og king of Bashan,(BW)
and all the kings of Canaan(BX)
12 and he gave their land as an inheritance,(BY)
an inheritance to his people Israel.

13 Your name, Lord, endures forever,(BZ)
your renown,(CA) Lord, through all generations.
14 For the Lord will vindicate his people(CB)
and have compassion on his servants.(CC)

15 The idols of the nations(CD) are silver and gold,
    made by human hands.(CE)
16 They have mouths, but cannot speak,(CF)
    eyes, but cannot see.
17 They have ears, but cannot hear,
nor is there breath(CG) in their mouths.
18 Those who make them will be like them,
and so will all who trust in them.

19 All you Israelites, praise the Lord;(CH)
    house of Aaron, praise the Lord;
20 house of Levi, praise the Lord;
you who fear him, praise the Lord.
21 Praise be to the Lord from Zion,(CI)
to him who dwells in Jerusalem.(CJ)

Praise the Lord.

Numbers 23:11-26

11 Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies,(A) but you have done nothing but bless them!”(B)

12 He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”(C)

Balaam’s Second Message

13 Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place(D) where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp.(E) And from there, curse them for me.(F) 14 So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah,(G) and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.(H)

15 Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”

16 The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth(I) and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”

17 So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials.(J) Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”

18 Then he spoke his message:(K)

“Arise, Balak, and listen;
    hear me, son of Zippor.(L)
19 God is not human,(M) that he should lie,(N)
not a human being, that he should change his mind.(O)
Does he speak and then not act?
Does he promise(P) and not fulfill?
20 I have received a command to bless;(Q)
he has blessed,(R) and I cannot change it.(S)

21 “No misfortune is seen in Jacob,(T)
    no misery observed[a] in Israel.(U)
The Lord their God is with them;(V)
the shout of the King(W) is among them.
22 God brought them out of Egypt;(X)
they have the strength of a wild ox.(Y)
23 There is no divination against[b] Jacob,
    no evil omens(Z) against[c] Israel.
It will now be said of Jacob
and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’
24 The people rise like a lioness;(AA)
they rouse themselves like a lion(AB)
that does not rest till it devours its prey
and drinks the blood(AC) of its victims.”

25 Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”

26 Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”(AD)

Romans 8:1-11

Life Through the Spirit

Therefore, there is now no condemnation(A) for those who are in Christ Jesus,(B) because through Christ Jesus(C) the law of the Spirit who gives life(D) has set you[a] free(E) from the law of sin(F) and death. For what the law was powerless(G) to do because it was weakened by the flesh,[b](H) God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh(I) to be a sin offering.[c](J) And so he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement(K) of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.(L)

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires;(M) but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires.(N) The mind governed by the flesh is death,(O) but the mind governed by the Spirit is life(P) and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God;(Q) it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh(R) cannot please God.

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh(S) but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.(T) And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ,(U) they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you,(V) then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life[d] because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead(W) is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies(X) because of[e] his Spirit who lives in you.

Matthew 22:1-14

The Parable of the Wedding Banquet(A)

22 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: “The kingdom of heaven is like(B) a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. He sent his servants(C) to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

“Then he sent some more servants(D) and said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’

“But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers(E) and burned their city.

“Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. So go to the street corners(F) and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good,(G) and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend(H)?’ The man was speechless.

13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’(I)

14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”(J)
