Psalm 37

David wrote this song.

Trust the Lord[a]

37 Do not become upset
because of what wicked people do.
Do not be jealous of people that do bad things.
Remember that they are soon gone!
They are like grass that quickly becomes dry.
They will soon die like green plants in hot weather.
Trust in the Lord and do good things.
Then you will live safely in the land.
Be happy that the Lord is your friend.
He will give you what you most want.
Let the Lord be your guide into the future.
Trust in him and he will help you.
He will show everyone that you are righteous.
People will know that you are a good person,
as clearly as the sun shines at noon.
Be patient as you wait for the Lord to help you.
    Trust him to bring help.
Do not become upset when bad people seem to do well,
when their wicked ideas really happen.
Do not become angry or upset!
It will only bring trouble for you.
Wicked people will disappear one day!
But people who trust the Lord for help
will live safely in the land that he has given to them.
10 Evil people will soon be gone.
You may look for them,
but you will not find them.
11 Humble people will live safely in the land.
They will live in peace and they will enjoy good things.
12 Wicked people think about how to hurt righteous people.
They show their teeth to frighten good people.
13 But my Lord laughs at those wicked people,
because he knows that their day of punishment will come.
14 Wicked people get out their swords,
and they prepare to shoot their arrows.
They try to make poor and helpless people fall down.
They try to destroy people who do what is right.
15 But their swords will go into their own hearts.
Their bows will break in pieces.

16 It is better to do what is right and only have a few things,
than to be wicked and have many things.
17 The Lord keeps righteous people safe,
but he will destroy the power of wicked people.
18 If anyone lives a completely good life,
the Lord takes care of them.
His gifts to them will last for ever.
19 When times of trouble come,
    they will still be safe.
In a time of famine,
they will have enough to eat.
20 But wicked people will die.
    They are the Lord's enemies.
They will disappear like smoke from a fire that burns them up.

21 If you lend money to a wicked person,
he will not give it back to you.
But righteous people are kind to others
    and they give things freely.
22 Yes, people that the Lord blesses
will live safely in the land.
But people that he has cursed
    will disappear.
23 If the way that somebody lives pleases the Lord,
the Lord will lead him into good things.
24 Even if that person trips, he will not fall.
The Lord will hold his hand.
25 I was young once and now I am old.
But in all my life, I have never seen any good man that God has left alone.
I have not seen his children so hungry
that they ask people for food.
26 Good people are always kind.
They lend things to other people.
Their children also bring God's blessing.

27 Turn away from evil things!
    Do what is right!
Then you will live safely in the land for ever.
28 The Lord loves justice.
He will never leave those who serve him.
He will take care of them for ever,
but he will remove the children of wicked people.
29 God's righteous people will take the land for themselves.
They will live there for ever.
30 Righteous people speak wise words.
    What they say brings justice.
31 They think about God's Law all the time,
so that they do not make mistakes.
32 Evil people wait for a chance to kill righteous people.
33 But the Lord will not leave his righteous people,
so that their enemies have power over them.
When evil people accuse them,
the Lord will show that they are not guilty.

34 Be patient and continue to trust the Lord.
    Obey his commands.
Then he will give you honour,
so that you live safely in the land.
You will see that the Lord destroys wicked people.
35 I have seen cruel, wicked people become very powerful,
like trees that grow well in good soil.
36 But soon after that,
I see that they have disappeared!
I looked for them,
but I could not find them anywhere.
37 Think about people who are honest
and who do what is right.
Those who help people to live in peace
will live to enjoy their children.
38 But God will destroy people that turn against him.
Evil people will not have descendants.
39 The Lord will make righteous people safe.
He will take care of them in times of trouble.
40 The Lord helps them.
He saves them from wicked people.
He keeps them safe
because they turn to him for help.

Exodus 20:1-21

God's 10 special commands

20 Then God spoke all these words:

‘I am the Lord your God. I brought you out of Egypt, the country where you were slaves.

You must not have any other gods except me.

You must not make any idol for yourself. Do not make a false god in the shape of anything that is in the sky above. Do not make one in the shape of anything on the earth or in the sea. You must not bend down your head to any idol or worship it. I am the Lord your God and I want you to belong to me alone. I will punish children because of the bad things that their fathers have done. I will also punish their children and their grandchildren too. That is how I will punish everyone who turns against me. But I will truly love all those who love me. They are the people who obey my laws. I will continue to love them and their families for ever.

You must not speak the name of the Lord your God in a wrong way. The Lord will punish anyone who speaks his name in a wrong way.

Remember the Sabbath day. Keep it as a special day for me. You have six days every week to do all your work. 10 But the seventh day is a Sabbath day. It is special for the Lord your God. You must not do any work on that day. Your son and your daughter must not work on that day. Your servants, male or female, must not work on that day. The foreign person who lives among you and even your animals must not work on that day. 11 In six days, the Lord made the heavens, the earth and the sea. He made everything that is in them. But on the seventh day, the Lord rested. So he blessed the Sabbath day and he made it special.

12 Always respect your father and your mother. Then you will live for many years in the land that the Lord your God will give to you.

13 You must not murder anyone.

14 You must not have sex with another person's husband or wife.

15 You must not take another person's things for yourself.

16 You must not say false things against your neighbour.

17 You must not want to take your neighbour's house for yourself. You must not want to take his wife, or his servants, male or female. You must not want to take his ox, or his donkey, or anything else that belongs to your neighbour.’

The people are very afraid

18 The people heard the loud thunder and they saw the bright lightning. They heard the noise of the trumpet. They saw the smoke on the mountain. They were so afraid that their bodies were shaking. They would not come near. 19 They said to Moses, ‘Speak to us yourself. We will listen to you. But do not let God speak to us. If he does, we will die.’

20 Moses said to the people, ‘Do not be afraid. God has come to test you. He wants you to respect him and to obey him. Then you will not do things that are wrong.’

21 So the people stayed away from the mountain. But Moses walked towards the thick, dark cloud, where God was.

Colossians 1:24-2:7

Paul's work for Christ's people

24 At this time, I am suffering on your behalf, but I am still happy. Christ himself suffered on behalf of his people, the church. Now, while I live in my human body, I also suffer. I continue to receive the pain that Christ received, so that it may be complete.[a] In that way, I help the church, which is like Christ's own body.

25 I have become God's servant, so that I can help the church. God chose me to do that. He chose me to explain his message to you completely. 26 That message is a secret that God hid from everyone before now. He hid it from all the people who lived in past times. But now he has shown this secret to his people. 27 God wanted them to understand how great this secret is. It shows that God will bless people who live in all countries of the world. This secret message is that Christ lives in you. And because of that, you know that you will live with God in heaven one day.

28 That is why we tell everyone the message about Christ. God helps us to be very wise as we warn people and we teach them. We want every person who belongs to Christ to become complete, as God sees them. 29 That is why I work very hard. Christ works powerfully in me to make me strong for this difficult work.

I want you to know that I am doing a difficult work on your behalf. I am also working to help the people at Laodicea and other people who have never met me. I want all the believers to become strong in their spirits. I want them to help each other because they love one another. Then God will bless them very much, because they understand God's secret message very well. They will be completely sure of it. And they will know Christ himself, who is God's secret. Christ is the one who holds everything that makes people wise. He helps people to know the true message that God had hidden.

I am telling you these things so that false teachers will not deceive you. They may teach ideas that seem good, but do not listen to them. My body is not there with you, but I think about you a lot. I hear that you are living and working well together. I also hear that you continue to trust Christ strongly. That makes me very happy.

How Christians should live

You have accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord. So remember that you belong to him as you live your lives. Get your strength from Christ himself, so that you become stronger and stronger.[b] Continue to believe the true message that we taught you. And thank God very much for everything.

Matthew 4:1-11

The Devil tries to cause Jesus to do wrong things

Then the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the wilderness. While he was there, the Devil came to him. He tried to cause Jesus to do wrong things.[a] Jesus did not eat anything for 40 days and 40 nights. At the end of this time, he was very hungry.

Then the Devil came to Jesus and said to him, ‘If you are the Son of God, speak to these stones. Tell them to become bread.’ But Jesus replied, ‘No! The Bible says that food alone cannot cause people to live. They need to hear every word that God speaks. That is what gives them true life.’[b]

Then the Devil led Jesus to Jerusalem. He made him stand on the highest part of the temple. He said to Jesus, ‘If you are the Son of God, jump down from here to the ground. You know that the Bible says:

“God will tell his angels to keep you safe.
They will hold you safely in their hands.
They will not let you hurt your foot on a stone”.’[c]

Jesus replied, ‘No! The Bible also says, “Do not test the Lord God, to see if he will save you”.’[d]

Then the Devil led Jesus up a very high mountain. He showed Jesus all the countries in the whole world. They were very great and beautiful. The Devil said, ‘I will give you power over all these countries. Just go down on your knees in front of me. Worship me and I will give it all to you.’

10 Jesus then said to him, ‘Satan, go away from me! The Bible says, “Only worship your Lord God. He is the only one that you should obey”.’

11 Then the Devil left Jesus alone. Immediately angels came to Jesus and they took care of him.
