Psalm 132

A song to sing as we climb.

The house of God

132 Lord, remember King David
and all the troubles that he suffered.
He made a special promise to the Lord.
He promised you, the Mighty One of Jacob.[a]
He said, ‘I will not go into my house or get into my bed;
I will not sleep even for a moment,
until I find a house for the Lord.
Yes, the Mighty One of Jacob needs a proper home.’[b]

Listen! We heard the news at Ephrathah.[c]
We found God's Covenant Box in the fields of Jaar.[d]
We will go to the Lord's home!
We will worship him on his throne!
Lord, come now and stay here, in your home!
Come with the Covenant Box that shows your great power.[e]
May your priests serve you in a good way.
Cause your faithful people to shout with joy!
10 Remember your servant, King David.
Do not turn away from your chosen king.[f]
11 The Lord made a strong promise to David.
He will not change what he has promised to do.
The Lord said,
‘I will put one of your sons on your throne to rule as king.
12 If your sons obey my covenant and my rules,
their descendants will rule for ever.’
13 The Lord has chosen Zion to be his home.
14 He said, ‘This is where I will live for ever.
This is where I want my home to be.
15 I will give Zion's people everything that they need.
Zion's poor people will have plenty of food to eat.
16 I will keep Zion's priests safe.
The people who serve God faithfully will shout loudly,
    because they are so happy.
17 In Zion I will give strength to King David's family.
My chosen king will continue to rule well,
like a light that shines brightly.
18 I will cause his enemies to be ashamed.
But his own kingdom will be great!’

Isaiah 63:7-16

Isaiah's prayer

I will speak about all the good things that the Lord does because he loves his people. We should praise him for everything that he does for us. He has done many good things for us, Israel's family. He helps us because he loves us very much, and he is very kind.

The Lord said, ‘Surely, they are my own people. As my children, they will not turn against me.’ So he became their Saviour. When his people suffered, he also had pain. He sent his own angel to go and save them. Because he loved them and he was kind to them, he redeemed them. He lifted them up and he carried them, through all the years long ago.

10 But they turned against him. They made his Holy Spirit angry. So he then became their enemy. He fought against them.

11 Then they remembered past years, when Moses led their ancestors out of Egypt. They said, ‘Where is the Lord now, when we need him? He brought his people safely through the sea, with Moses as their leader. He caused his Holy Spirit to work among them. 12 He caused his power to be with Moses, as Moses raised his arm over the sea. He caused the waters to become separate so that his people could go across. In that way, he caused his name always to be famous. 13 He led them through the deep water of the sea. They ran across like horses on open ground, and they did not fall. 14 The Lord's Spirit led them to a place of rest, like cows that go down to a quiet valley.’

Yes, Lord, you were your people's guide. In that way, you made your name great.

15 So now, do something to help us! Look down from your beautiful, holy home in heaven. Use your power to show that we are your special people. Have you forgotten how to be kind to us?

16 Remember that you are our Father. Maybe our ancestor Abraham does not recognize us. Even Israel himself may not recognize us. But you, Lord, are our Father. Since times long ago, your name has been our Redeemer.

Matthew 1:18-25

Jesus is born

18 This is how Jesus Christ was born. His mother's name was Mary. She had promised to marry a man called Joseph. Then she discovered that she was pregnant. This happened before they started to live together. It was the Holy Spirit that caused this to happen to her. 19 Joseph was a good man. He wanted to do what was right. He did not want her to become ashamed in front of people. So he decided to stop their marriage secretly.[a] 20 He thought about what he should do. Then an angel came from the Lord God to see him. The angel came to Joseph while he was dreaming. The angel said, ‘Joseph, you who are from the family of King David, take Mary home as your wife. Do not be afraid to do that. The baby that is growing inside her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 Mary's baby will be a boy. He will save his people from their sins.[b] Because of that, you must give him the name “Jesus”.’

22 The Lord God had given a message about this to one of his prophets long ago. Now that message would become true. 23 The prophet had said, ‘A young woman who has never had sex will have a baby boy. People will call her son Immanuel.’ This name means ‘God is with us’.

24 Then Joseph woke up from his sleep. He did what God's angel had said to him. He married Mary and he took her to his home. 25 Joseph did not have sex with Mary until after the baby boy was born. He said that the boy's name should be Jesus.

Psalm 34

David wrote this song when he made the Philistine king think that he was crazy. He wanted the king to send him away.[a]

God is great![b]

34 I will always praise the Lord.
All the time I will sing to praise him.
I will boast that the Lord is great!
I want weak people to hear that.
I want them to be happy!
Join with me to tell people that the Lord is great!
Together we will make his name famous.
I asked the Lord to help me,
    and he answered me.
He saved me from everything that made me afraid.
People who trust the Lord to help them
    will be very happy.
Their faces will be bright,
and they will not be ashamed.
I was weak and helpless,
so I called out to the Lord.
The Lord heard me.
He saved me from all my troubles.
The Lord's angel is very near
to people who respect and obey the Lord.
He keeps them safe from danger.
Taste and see that the Lord is good!
God blesses people who turn to him
    to keep them safe.
All you people who belong to the Lord,
    continue to obey him.
People who respect the Lord
will have the things that they need.
10 Even young lions may not have food,
    so that they become hungry.
But people who trust the Lord for help
will receive every good thing that they need.

11 Children, come and listen to me!
I will teach you how to respect the Lord.
12 Do you want to live a good life?
Do you want your life to be long and happy?
13 If so, do not speak any evil words.
Do not tell lies to deceive people.
14 Do good things instead of evil things.
Try to bring peace into people's lives.
15 The Lord watches over righteous people.
He hears them when they call to him for help.
16 But the Lord turns against people who do evil things.
He causes everybody to forget that they ever lived.
17 The Lord hears his righteous people
    when they call for help.
He saves them from all their troubles.
18 When people are upset,
the Lord is near to them.
He saves those who feel very weak and upset.
19 Righteous people may often have troubles,
but the Lord saves them from every danger.
20 The Lord keeps them safe.
Not even one of their bones is broken!
21 Evil things will return to kill wicked people.
Whoever hates God's own people
    will receive punishment.
22 The Lord saves the lives of his servants.
Everyone who trusts the Lord to keep them safe
will not receive punishment as a guilty person.

Ephesians 3:14-21

Paul prays for the Christians at Ephesus

14 Yes, that is why I pray for you. I go down on my knees to pray to God, our Father. 15 Every family, those in heaven and those on earth, receives its true name from him. 16 I pray that God will cause you to be strong in your spirits. God has great and valuable things in heaven to help you. I pray that God's Spirit will help you with God's own power. 17 I pray that Christ will make his home in you, as you believe in him. Then you will know God's love very well. You will be like trees that have roots which go down deep into God's love. That will make you strong. 18 Then you will understand, with all God's people, how much Christ loves us. That love is very wide and long and high and deep! 19 Christ's love for us is so great that nobody can ever completely know it. As you understand this more and more, God's own nature will completely fill you.

20 We praise God, who causes his power to work in us. In that way, he is able to do much more than we could ever ask for. He can do much more than we could even think about. 21 We want all God's people to know that God is great! Everyone who belongs to his church and who trusts in Christ Jesus should praise him! We should praise him always and for ever. Amen. That is true!
