Psalm 63

David wrote this psalm when he was in the Judah wilderness.

A morning song[a]

63 God, you are my God.
I want to be near to you.
I need you to give me life,
like a thirsty person in a dry desert.
As a person needs water to live,
that is how I need you.[b]
When I have gone into your temple,
I have seen what you are like.
I have seen your great power and your glory.
Your faithful love for me is better than life itself.
So I will speak out to praise you.
Yes, I will thank you for as long as I live.
I will lift up my hands and I will pray to you.
You make me very happy,
better than a feast of good food.
I will sing happy songs to praise you.
When I lie on my bed,
I think about you all through the night.
You are the one who keeps me safe,
like a bird protects its babies under its wings.
So I sing happy songs.
I keep very near to you
and your strong right hand keeps me safe.
My enemies are trying to kill me,
but I know that they themselves will die.
They will go down into the deep hole of death.
10 Soldiers will kill them with swords.
Wild dogs will eat their dead bodies.
11 But the king will sing songs to praise God.[c]
Everybody who promises to serve God
will speak aloud to praise him.
But everyone who tells lies
will not be able to say anything!

Psalm 98

God rules the world[a]

98 Sing a new song to praise the Lord.
    He has done great things.
He has used his own power and his holy strength
    to win against his enemies.
The Lord has shown everybody
that he has the power to save.
All the nations of the world
can see that he does what is right.
He has kept his promise
that he made to the people of Israel.
He has continued to take care of them
    with his faithful love.
Everyone who lives everywhere on the earth can see
that God has the power to save people.
All people on the earth should shout aloud
    to praise the Lord![b]
Sing happy songs to praise him!
Make music on your harps to praise him!
    Make beautiful music!
Make a happy sound with trumpets and horns!
Shout aloud to praise the Lord, your king!
The sea and everything that is in it
should shout to praise the Lord!
The earth and all those who live in it
    should shout as well!
The rivers should clap their hands,
and the mountains should all sing together,
    to praise the Lord.
He is coming to judge the earth.[c]
He is a fair judge.
He will judge all the people of the world honestly.

Psalm 103

This is a song that David wrote.

The love of God[a]

103 I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’
Everything that is in me, praise his holy name!
I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’
Never forget all the good things that he has done for you!
He forgives all my sins.
He makes me well again when I am ill.
He saves me from the deep hole of death's power.
He always loves me and he is kind to me.
That is how he blesses me so much!
He gives me many good things for my life here.
So I become strong again, with the strength of a young eagle.
The Lord does what is right and fair.
He helps poor people who suffer.
He showed Moses how he works to help his people.
He showed the Israelites the great things that he could do.
The Lord is kind to people and he forgives them.
He is slow to get angry and his love always continues.
He will not always tell us that we are wrong.
He will not always continue to be angry.
10 We should receive much punishment for the bad things that we do.
But the Lord does not punish us so much.
11 For people who worship him, his faithful love is very great.
How far is the sky above the earth? His love is greater than that!
12 How far is the east from the west?
The Lord has taken our sins further away than that!
He no longer says that we are guilty.
13 As a father is kind to his children, the Lord is kind to us.
He is kind to people who worship him.
14 He knows that we are weak humans.
He remembers that he used dust to make us.
15 A person's life is like grass that quickly dies.
He is strong only for a short time, like wild flowers in a field.
16 A hot wind blows over flowers and they die!
Nobody even remembers where they were growing.
17 But the faithful love of the Lord
will always be with people who worship him.
He promises to be kind to their children's children for ever.
18 He continues to love people who obey his covenant.
Those are the people who obey his laws.
19 The Lord rules from his throne in heaven.
He rules as king over everything.
20 You who are the Lord's angels,
you strong angels who do what he tells you to do,
    praise the Lord!
21 All of you who belong to his armies in heaven,
his servants who do what he wants,
    praise the Lord!
22 Yes, everything that the Lord has made,
in all the places that he rules over,
    praise the Lord!

I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’

Daniel 9:3-10

So I turned to my Lord God, to ask him for help. I prayed to him and I ate no food. I wore clothes of rough sackcloth. I put ashes on myself to show that I was upset. I prayed to the Lord my God. I agreed that we were guilty and I prayed this prayer:

‘Our Lord, you are a great God and we give you honour. In your covenant, you have promised to love your people. You continue to be faithful to those people who love you and obey your commands. We have done bad things that are wicked and evil. We have turned against you. We have not obeyed your laws and your teaching. We did not listen to your servants, the prophets. They spoke your message to our kings, to our rulers and to our ancestors. They spoke to all the people of our nation.

Our Lord, you always do what is right. Today we are very ashamed. The people of Judah, Jerusalem and all Israel have not been faithful to you. You have sent our people away to many countries. Some are near and some are far away. We are all ashamed because we have turned away from you. Our kings, our leaders and our ancestors have turned away from you, Lord. So we are very ashamed. Our Lord God, we have turned against you. But you are kind and you forgive people. 10 We have not obeyed the Lord our God. You sent your servants, the prophets, to give us your laws. But we have not lived in the way that your laws taught us.

Hebrews 2:10-18

10 It was right that God should bring Jesus back to heaven as king. All things belong to God, and he causes all things to continue. God wanted many people to become his children. He wanted them to live with him in heaven. Jesus made this possible because he died with much pain as a sacrifice. 11 Jesus is the one who makes people clean in front of God. Jesus himself and all the people that he makes clean have the same Father. So Jesus is not ashamed to call all those people his brothers and sisters. 12 He says this to God:

‘I will tell my brothers and sisters that you are great.
When your people meet together,
I will stand with them,
and I will praise you with songs.’[a]

13 He also says this:

    ‘I will trust God completely.’
He says this too:
‘I stand here with the children that God has given me.’[b]

14 So, those people who become God's children are human. They have human bodies. Because of that, Jesus himself became human like us. In that way, when he died he was able to destroy the Devil. It is the Devil who has power over death. 15 Before, we were like slaves all our lives because we were afraid of death. But now, Jesus' death makes us free. 16 It is clear that Jesus did not come to help the angels. He came to help people who are from Abraham's family.[c]

17 Because of that, it was necessary for Jesus to become completely like us, his brothers and sisters. He had to become God's servant on our behalf, like God's most important priest. In that way, he could serve God well and be kind to us. He died as a sacrifice so that God could forgive us for our sins. 18 While Jesus lived on earth, the Devil tried to make him do wrong things. This caused Jesus to have much pain and trouble. But because of that, he can now help us not to do wrong things.

John 12:44-50

Jesus' message warns people

44 Jesus said in a loud voice, ‘Anyone who believes in me does not believe only in me. That person believes also in the one who sent me. 45 Anyone who looks at me does not see only me. They see also him who sent me. 46 I have come into the world to be a light for people. Everyone who believes in me will not remain in the dark. That is why I came. 47 Not everyone who hears my words will obey them. I will not judge anyone who is like that. I did not come to judge the people in the world. I came to save them. 48 But there is something that will judge people who refuse to believe in me. Those are people who do not accept my message. The message that I have spoken will itself judge people like that on the last day. 49 The words that I have spoken did not come from me myself. They came from the Father, who sent me. He told me what message I must speak. He told me the words I must say. 50 The message that the Father has given me causes people to have life for ever. I know that. So I speak only those things that the Father has said to me.’
