Psalm 70

For the worship leader. A song of David for remembering.

O God, hurry to save me;
    Eternal One, hurry to my side.
For those who seek to kill me,
    God, may they burn in disgrace and humiliation!
Repulse the attacks; ridicule the efforts
    of those taking pleasure in my pain.
I hear their taunts: “Nah, nah, nah . . . .”
    Let those hecklers fall back upon their brays—ashamed and confused

But let those who pursue You
    celebrate and have joy because of You.
And let the song of those who love Your saving grace
    never cease: “God is great!”
But I am poor and in serious need,
    so hurry to my side, God,
Because You are my helper, my liberator.
    Eternal One, please don’t wait.

Psalm 71

I have found shelter in You, Eternal One;
    I count on You to shield me always from humiliation and disgrace.
Rescue and save me in Your justice.
    Turn Your ear to me, and hurry to deliver me from my enemies.
Be my rock of refuge where I can always hide.
    You have given the order to keep me safe;
    You are my solid ground—my rock and my fortress.

Save me from the power of sinful people, O my God,
    from the grip of unjust and cruel men.
For You are my hope, Eternal One;
    You, Lord, have been the source of my confidence since I was young.
I have leaned upon You since I came into this world;
    I have relied on You since You took me safely from my mother’s body,
So I will ever praise You.

Many find me a mystery,
    but You are my rock and my shelter—my soul’s asylum.
My mouth overflows with praise to You
    and proclaims Your magnificence all day long.
Do not set me aside when I am old;
    do not abandon me when I am worn out.
10 For my enemies often voice evil against me;
    those who desire to kill me plot together in secret.
11 They say, “God has abandoned him;
    let’s go after him right now and seize him.
    There’s no one around to rescue him.”

12 God, stay close by me.
    Come quick, O my God, and help me!
13 May my enemies be covered in shame and then die;
    may those who seek to harm me
    be overwhelmed with contempt and disgrace.
14 But I will keep hope alive,
    and my praise to You will grow exponentially.
15 I will bear witness to Your merciful acts;
    throughout the day I will speak of all the ways You deliver,
    although, I admit, I do not know the entirety of either.
16 I will come with stories of Your great acts, my Lord, the Eternal.
    I will remind them of Your justice, only Yours.

17 You have taught me since I was young, O God,
    and I still proclaim the wonderful things You have done.
18 Now as I grow old and my hair turns gray,
    I ask that You not abandon me, O God.
Allow me to share with the generation to come
    about Your power;
Let me speak about Your strength and wonders
    to all those yet to be born.
19 God, Your justice stretches to the heavens,
    You who have done mighty things!
    Who is like You, O God?

20 You have made me see hard times: I’ve experienced many miserable days,
    but You will restore me again.
You will raise me up
    from the deep pit.
21 You will greatly increase my status
    and be my comfort once again.

22 I will praise You with music played on a harp
    because You have been faithful, O my God.
I will sing praises to You with the lyre,
    O Holy One of Israel.
23 I will shout for joy
    as I sing Your praises;
    my soul will celebrate because You have rescued me.
24 All day long I will declare how Your justice saved me,
    for those who have plotted to bring me harm
    are now ashamed and humiliated.

Psalm 74

Psalm 74

A contemplative song[a] of Asaph.

This lament was written shortly after the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in 586 b.c. Now in exile and separated from God, His city, and His land, the people of God experience pain that is palpable.

O True God, why have You turned Your back on us and abandoned us forever?
    Why is Your anger seething and Your wrath smoldering against the sheep of Your pasture?
Remember the congregation of people You acquired long ago,
    the tribe which You redeemed to be Your very own.
    Remember Mount Zion, where You have chosen to live!
Come, direct Your attention to Your sanctuary;
    our enemy has demolished everything and left it in complete ruin.

Your enemies roared like lions in Your sacred chamber;
    they have claimed it with their own standards as signs.
They acted like lumberjacks swinging their axes
    to cut down a stand of trees.
They hacked up all the beautifully carved items,
    smashed them to splinters with their axes and hammers.
They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground;
    they have desecrated the place where Your holy name lived in honor;
They have plotted in their hearts, “We will crush them and bring them to their knees!”
    Then they scorched all of the places in the land where the True God met His people.

We no longer receive signs,
    there are no more prophets who remain,
    and not one of us knows how long this situation will last.
10 O True God, how much longer will the enemy mock us?
    Will this insult continue against You forever?
11 Why do You stand by and do nothing?
    Unleash Your power and finish them off!

12 Even so, the True God is my King from long ago,
    bringing salvation to His people throughout the land.
13 You have divided the sea with Your power;
    You shattered the skulls of the creatures of the sea;
14 You smashed the heads of Leviathan
    and fed his remains to the people of the desert.
15 You broke open the earth and springs burst forth and streams filled the crevices;
    You dried up the great rivers.
16 The day and the night are both Yours—
    You fashioned the sun, moon, and all the lights that pierce the darkness.
17 You have arranged the earth, set all its boundaries;
    You are the Architect of the seasons: summer and winter.

18 Eternal One, do not forget that the enemy has taunted You
    and a company of fools has rejected Your name.
19 We are Your precious turtledoves;
    don’t surrender our souls to the wild beasts.
    Do not forget the lives of Your poor, afflicted, and brokenhearted ones forever.

20 Be mindful of Your covenant with us,
    for the dark corners of the land are filled with pockets of violence.
21 Do not allow the persecuted to return without honor;
    may the poor, wounded, and needy sing praises to You;
    may they bring glory to Your name!
22 O True God, rise up and defend Your cause;
    remember how the foolish man insults You every hour of the day.
23 Do not forget the voices of Your enemies,
    the commotion and chaos of Your foes, which continually grow.

Genesis 23

23 When Sarah reached the end of her life, she was 127 years old. She died at Kiriath-arba (a city now known as Hebron) in Canaan. Abraham went in where her body was laid out to mourn and weep over her. When he got up from his place beside her, he spoke to the Hittites who had been his neighbors for many years.

Abraham: I am a stranger and an outsider living here among you. In my heartache, I am asking you please to allow me to obtain some property here among you as a grave site for my dead wife. This would allow me to give her a proper burial.

The Hittites conferred and answered Abraham.

Hittites: Listen, my lord. We recognize you are a powerful prince among us, and God is certainly with you. Bury your dead in the best of our burial places. None of us will deny you any tomb so that you might properly bury your dead.

Abraham got up and bowed in respect to the people of the land, the Hittites.

Abraham (to the Hittites): If you are really willing for me to give my dead wife a proper burial, then would you please ask Ephron (Zohar’s son) for me if I might buy the cave of Machpelah. It is a tract of land he owns located at the end of his field. With you as my witnesses, I will offer him full price for the property as a place to bury my dead.

10 Now it happened that Ephron was sitting right there among the Hittites. He personally answered Abraham so that all those present at the city gate could hear.

Ephron: 11 No, my lord, listen: I will not sell it to you; I will give you the field and the cave that lies on the property. In the presence of all of these people, my people, I give it to you so that you can go and bury your dead.

12 Abraham again bowed in respect to the people of the land 13 and replied to Ephron so all those present could hear.

Abraham: Please, listen to what I have to say. I will gladly pay you a fair price for the field. Please accept it from me. That way I can bury my dead in peace.

This account reveals the complex and rather ambiguous Near Eastern way of negotiating a purchase. The transaction takes place publicly at the city gate in the presence of the community leaders who could serve as advisors to the deal or witnesses if the deal goes awry. Initially Ephron offers to give the land to Abraham for a burial site, but in true Near Eastern style the patriarch indicates respectfully that he desires to purchase it instead. Ephron’s true motive may be seen in his counteroffer; the property is worth 10 pounds of silver, a not-so-insignificant price for a tract of land on the edge of his property. Abraham’s motive is clear enough. He wants to own outright a parcel of land near where he and his family have lived for many years, a land promised to him by God, a land where now Sarah has died and needs a proper burial. Gifts come with strings attached, and Abraham does not want to owe Ephron or anyone else for that matter. He knows full well he owes everything to God.

14 Ephron answered Abraham.

Ephron: 15 My lord, listen to me. The property is worth 10 pounds of silver. Surely that is an amount we can agree on. So go, and bury your dead in peace.

16 So Abraham accepted Ephron’s offer, and he weighed out the silver for him in the amount they had agreed upon in the presence of the Hittites—10 pounds of silver, according to the weights among the merchants of that time.

17 So it was that the field of Ephron in Machpelah, east of Mamre, the field with the cave in it and the trees on it all passed 18 to Abraham and became his legal possession in the presence of the Hittites and all those officials present at the city gate. 19 After the agreement was made, Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah, east of Mamre (an area now known as Hebron) in Canaan. 20 The field and the cave in it became Abraham’s property with the approval of the Hittites; now he had a proper place to bury his dead.

Hebrews 11:32-12:2

32 I could speak more of faith; I could talk until time itself ran out. If I continued, I could speak of the examples of Gideon, Barak, Samson, and Jephthah, of David and Samuel and all the prophets. 33 I could give accounts of people alive with faith who conquered kingdoms, brought justice, obtained promises, and closed the mouths of hungry lions. 34 I could tell you how people of faith doused raging fires, escaped the edge of the sword, made the weak strong, and—stoking great valor among the champions of God—sent opposing armies into panicked flight.

35 I could speak of faith bringing women their loved ones back from death and how the faithful accepted torture instead of earthly deliverance because they believed they would obtain a better life in the resurrection. 36 Others suffered mockery and whippings; they were placed in chains and in prisons. 37 The faithful were stoned, sawn in two,[a] killed by the sword, clothed only in sheepskins and goatskins; they were penniless, afflicted, and tormented. 38 The world was not worthy of these saints. They wandered across deserts, crossed mountains, and lived in the caves, cracks, and crevasses of the earth.

Stories of faith and faithfulness are central to the First Testament. The writer of Hebrews recalls some of the most memorable examples of how people of faith lived their lives. But what is faith? Faith is more than belief; it is trust, assurance, and firm conviction. Ironically most of those who lived by faith never fully realized the promises God had made. Like us they journeyed as strangers and exiles, longing for another country. We should remember their patient faith when we face prolonged hardships and allow the trials we face to strengthen our faith rather than destroy it. If we are comfortable here and don’t face suffering for our faith, perhaps we aren’t fully living by faith and looking forward to a future hope.

39 These, though commended by God for their great faith, did not receive what was promised. 40 That promise has awaited us, who receive the better thing that God has provided in these last days, so that with us, our forebears might finally see the promise completed.

12 So since we stand surrounded by all those who have gone before, an enormous cloud of witnesses, let us drop every extra weight, every sin that clings to us and slackens our pace, and let us run with endurance the long race set before us.

We may feel alone, but we aren’t. We are surrounded by an army of witnesses. They have run the race of faith and finished well. It is now our turn.

Now stay focused on Jesus, who designed and perfected our faith. He endured the cross and ignored the shame of that death because He focused on the joy that was set before Him; and now He is seated beside God on the throne, a place of honor.

John 6:60-71

60 Many disciples heard what He said, and they had questions of their own.

Disciples: How are we supposed to understand all of this? It is a hard teaching.

61 Jesus was aware that even His disciples were murmuring about this.

How is it possible to follow this path and believe these truths? To be honest, it is not easy. In fact, some find this so hard that they leave Jesus for good. The rest readily admit they are still working on what it means to follow Him. So Jesus leaves behind a number of practices to help believers. One of these is known as the Lord’s Supper. Jesus instructs His disciples to break bread and share wine to remember how He will allow His body to be broken for all humankind. In some beautiful, mysterious way, Jesus is present in the simple elements of bread and wine, so the worshiper may touch Him, taste His richness, and remember His most glorious hours on the cross. In that moment, He embraces all darkness and shame and transforms them into light. As believers come to the table together and feast on His light, life seems more hopeful and complete. Taking the bread and the wine means affirming the reality that the One who has come to liberate souls is among and within His people.

Jesus: Has My teaching offended you? 62 What if you were to see the Son of Man ascend to return to where He came from? 63 The Spirit brings life. The flesh has nothing to offer. The words I have been teaching you are spirit and life, 64 but some of you do not believe.

From the first day Jesus began to call disciples, He knew those who did not have genuine faith. He knew, too, who would betray Him.

Jesus: 65 This is why I have been telling you that no one comes to Me without the Father’s blessing and guidance.

66 After hearing these teachings, many of His disciples walked away and no longer followed Jesus.

Jesus (to the twelve): 67 Do you want to walk away too?

Simon Peter: 68 Lord, if we were to go, whom would we follow? You speak the words that give everlasting life. 69 We believe and recognize that You are the Holy One sent by God.[a]

Jesus: 70 I chose each one of you, the twelve, Myself. But one of you is a devil.

71 This cryptic comment referred to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, for he was the one of the twelve who was going to betray Him.
