Psalm 45

Psalm 45

For the Music Director. To the melody of “Lilies.” A Contemplative Maskil of the sons of Korah. A love song.

My heart is overflowing with a good thought;
    I am speaking my works for the king;
    my tongue is the pen of a skilled scribe.

You are fairer than all the sons of men;
    favor is poured on your lips;
    therefore God has blessed you forever.
Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one,
    with your splendor and your majesty.
In your majesty ride prosperously
    because of truth and meekness and righteousness;
    and your right hand will teach you awesome things.
Your arrows are sharp in the heart of the king’s enemies;
    peoples will fall under you.
Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
    the scepter of Your kingdom is an upright scepter.
You love righteousness and hate wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, anointed you
    with the oil of gladness above your companions.
All your garments are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia;
    from the ivory palaces stringed instruments make you glad.
Kings’ daughters are among your honorable women;
    at your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.

10 Listen, O daughter, consider and incline your ear;
    forget your own people, and your father’s house,
11 and the king will desire your beauty.
    Since he is your lord, bow to him.
12 The daughter of Tyre will be there with a gift;
    even the rich among the people will entreat your favor.
13 The royal daughter is all glorious within her chamber;
    her clothing is plaited gold.
14 She shall be brought to the king in embroidered garments;
    the virgins, her companions who follow her,
    shall be brought to you.
15 With gladness and rejoicing they shall be brought;
    they shall enter into the king’s palace.

16 Your sons shall succeed your fathers;
    you will make them princes in all the land.

17 I will cause your name to be remembered in all generations;
    therefore the people will praise you forever and ever.

Psalm 47-48

Psalm 47

For the Music Director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

Clap your hands, all you people!
    Shout to God with a joyful voice.

For the Lord Most High is awesome;
    He is a great King over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
    and nations under our feet.
He chose our inheritance for us,
    the excellency of Jacob whom He loved. Selah

God went up with a shout,
    the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises;
    sing praises to our King, sing praises.

For God is the King of all the earth;
    sing praises with understanding.

God reigns over the nations;
    God sits on His holy throne.
The princes of peoples are gathered together,
    even the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
    He is greatly exalted.

Psalm 48

A Song. A Psalm of the sons of Korah.

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised
    in the city of our God, in His holy mountain.

Beautiful in elevation,
    the joy of the whole earth,
is Mount Zion, on the sides of the north,
    the city of the great King.
God is known in her citadels
    as a refuge.

For the kings were assembled,
    they passed by together.
They saw it, and so they were astounded;
    they were alarmed, they hurried away.
Trembling seized them there,
    and pain like a woman in labor;
You break the ships of Tarshish
    with an east wind.

As we have heard,
    so have we seen
in the city of the Lord of Hosts,
    in the city of our God;
    God will establish it forever. Selah

We have thought of Your lovingkindness, O God,
    in the midst of Your temple.
10 According to Your name, O God,
    so is Your praise to the ends of the earth;
    Your right hand is full of righteousness.
11 May Mount Zion rejoice,
    may the daughters of Judah be glad,
    because of Your judgments.

12 Walk about Zion, and go round about her;
    count her towers;
13 mark well her bulwarks;
    consider her citadels;
    that you may tell it to the generation following.

14 For this God is our God forever and ever;
    He will be our guide even to death.

Ezra 5

Restoration of the Temple Resumed

Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel who was over them. Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Joshua the son of Jozadak rose up and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were with them, helping them.

At the same time Tattenai, governor of the province Beyond the River, and Shethar-Bozenai and their companions came to them and said to them, “Who issued a command for you to build this house and complete this structure?” They also asked them, “What are the names of the men building this building?” But the eye of their God was on the elders of the Jews, so that they could not cause them to cease building until a command came from Darius. Consequently, they sent a letter concerning this matter.

This is a copy of the letter that Tattenai, governor of the province Beyond the River, and Shethar-Bozenai and his colleagues, the officials who were in the province Beyond the River, sent to Darius the king.

This is the document that they sent to him, containing accordingly what follows:

“To Darius the king:

“All peace.

“May it be known to the king that we went into the province of Judah, to the temple of the great God, which is built with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goes diligently, and prospers in their hands.

“Then we questioned those elders and said to them, ‘Who issued a command for you to build this house and complete this structure?’ 10 Also, we asked for their names in order to notify you and to document the names of the men that were their leaders.

11 “Thus they returned us an answer, saying,

“ ‘We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and are rebuilding the temple that was built these many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and completed. 12 Afterwards, our fathers provoked the God of heaven to wrath, so He gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, the Chaldean, who destroyed this temple and carried the people away into Babylon.

13 “ ‘However, in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babylon, King Cyrus made a decree to rebuild this house of God. 14 The vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God, which Nebuchadnezzar took from the temple in Jerusalem and placed them into the temple of Babylon, those Cyrus the king withdrew from the temple of Babylon and had them delivered to the one named Sheshbazzar, whom he had made governor. 15 King Cyrus said to him, “Take these vessels, go, carry them to the temple in Jerusalem and let the house of God be built its site.”

16 “ ‘So that same Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundation of the house of God in Jerusalem. Since that time even until now it has been under construction, yet it is not finished.’

17 “Now therefore, if it seems good to the king, let there be search made in the king’s treasure house there in Babylon to ascertain if it is so that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem. May the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter.”

Revelation 4

The Heavenly Worship

After this I looked. And there was an open door in heaven. The first voice I heard was like a trumpet speaking with me, saying, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this.” Immediately I was in the Spirit. And there was a throne set in heaven with One sitting on the throne! And He who sat there appeared like a jasper and a sardius stone. There was a rainbow around the throne, appearing like an emerald. Twenty-four thrones were around the throne. And I saw twenty-four elders sitting on the thrones, clothed in white garments. They had crowns of gold on their heads. Lightnings and thunderings and voices proceeded from the throne. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. Before the throne was a sea of glass like crystal.

In the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures covered with eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures had six wings each, and they were covered with eyes all around. All day and night, without ceasing, they were saying:

“ ‘Holy, holy, holy,
Lord God Almighty,’[a]
who was, and is, and is to come.”

When the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, 10 the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne, and worship Him, who lives forever and ever. Then they cast their crowns before the throne, saying,

11 “You are worthy, O Lord,
    to receive glory and honor and power;
for You have created all things,
    and by Your will they exist
    and were created.”

Matthew 13:1-9

The Parable of the Sower(A)

13 That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Great crowds assembled around Him, so that He went into a boat and sat there. And the whole assembly stood on the shore. Then He told them many things in parables, saying, “Listen! A sower went out to sow. While he sowed, some seeds fell beside the path, and the birds came and devoured them. But other seeds fell on rocky ground where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up because they did not have deep soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched. And because they did not take root, they withered away. Some seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. But other seeds fell into good ground and produced grain: a hundred, sixty, or thirty times as much. Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear.”
