Psalm 119:145-176

145 I call with all my heart, O Lord;
    answer me that I may keep your statutes.
146 I call to you to save me
    that I may observe your testimonies.
147 I rise before dawn and cry out;
    I put my hope in your words.
148 My eyes greet the night watches
    as I meditate on your promise.(A)
149 Hear my voice in your mercy, O Lord;
    by your judgment give me life.
150 Malicious persecutors draw near me;
    they are far from your law.
151 You are near, O Lord;
    reliable are all your commandments.
152 Long have I known from your testimonies
    that you have established them forever.

Resh

153 Look at my affliction and rescue me,
    for I have not forgotten your law.
154 Take up my cause and redeem me;(B)
    for the sake of your promise give me life.
155 Salvation is far from sinners
    because they do not cherish your statutes.
156 Your compassion is great, O Lord;
    in accord with your judgments, give me life.
157 Though my persecutors and foes are many,
    I do not turn from your testimonies.
158 I view the faithless with loathing(C)
    because they do not heed your promise.
159 See how I love your precepts, Lord;
    in your mercy give me life.
160 Your every word is enduring;
    all your righteous judgments are forever.

Shin

161 Princes persecute me without reason,
    but my heart reveres only your word.
162 I rejoice at your promise,
    as one who has found rich spoil.
163 Falsehood I hate and abhor;
    your law I love.
164 Seven times a day I praise you
    because your judgments are righteous.
165 Lovers of your law have much peace;(D)
    for them there is no stumbling block.
166 I look for your salvation, Lord,
    and I fulfill your commandments.
167 I observe your testimonies;
    I love them very much.
168 I observe your precepts and testimonies;
    all my ways are before you.

Taw

169 Let my cry come before you, Lord;(E)
    in keeping with your word, give me understanding.
170 Let my prayer come before you;
    rescue me according to your promise.
171 May my lips pour forth your praise,
    because you teach me your statutes.
172 May my tongue sing of your promise,
    for all your commandments are righteous.
173 Keep your hand ready to help me,
    for I have chosen your precepts.
174 I long for your salvation, Lord;
    your law is my delight.
175 Let my soul live to praise you;
    may your judgments give me help.
176 I have wandered like a lost sheep;
    seek out your servant,
    for I do not forget your commandments.(F)

Psalm 128-130

Psalm 128[a]

The Blessed Home of the Just

A song of ascents.

I

Blessed are all who fear the Lord,
    and who walk in his ways.(A)
What your hands provide you will enjoy;
    you will be blessed and prosper:(B)
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine
    within your home,
Your children like young olive plants
    around your table.(C)
Just so will the man be blessed
    who fears the Lord.

II

May the Lord bless you from Zion;
    may you see Jerusalem’s prosperity
    all the days of your life,(D)
    and live to see your children’s children.(E)
Peace upon Israel!(F)

Psalm 129[b]

Against Israel’s Enemies

A song of ascents.

I

Viciously have they attacked me from my youth,
    let Israel say now.(G)
Viciously have they attacked me from my youth,(H)
    yet they have not prevailed against me.
Upon my back the plowers plowed,
    as they traced their long furrows.(I)
But the just Lord cut me free
    from the ropes of the wicked.[c]

II

May they recoil in disgrace,
    all who hate Zion.
May they be like grass on the rooftops[d]
    withered in early growth,(J)
Never to fill the reaper’s hands,
    nor the arms of the binders of sheaves,
And with none passing by to call out:
    “The blessing of the Lord be upon you![e]
    We bless you in the name of the Lord!”(K)

Psalm 130[f]

Prayer for Pardon and Mercy

A song of ascents.

I

Out of the depths[g] I call to you, Lord;
    Lord, hear my cry!
May your ears be attentive
    to my cry for mercy.(L)
If you, Lord, keep account of sins,
    Lord, who can stand?(M)
But with you is forgiveness
    and so you are revered.[h]

II

I wait for the Lord,
    my soul waits
    and I hope for his word.(N)
My soul looks for the Lord
    more than sentinels for daybreak.(O)
More than sentinels for daybreak,
    let Israel hope in the Lord,
For with the Lord is mercy,
    with him is plenteous redemption,(P)
And he will redeem Israel
    from all its sins.(Q)

Numbers 22:41-23:12

The First Oracle. 41 The next morning Balak took Balaam up on Bamoth-baal, and from there he could see some of the people.

Chapter 23

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build me seven altars here, and here prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” So Balak did as Balaam had ordered, and Balak and Balaam offered a bull and a ram on each altar. Balaam said to Balak, “Stand here by your burnt offering while I go over there. Perhaps the Lord will meet me, and then I will tell you whatever he lets me see.” And so he went out on the barren height. Then God met Balaam, and Balak said to him: “I have erected the seven altars, and have offered a bull and a ram on each altar.” The Lord put an utterance in Balaam’s mouth, and said: Go back to Balak, and speak accordingly. So he went back to Balak, who was still standing by his burnt offering together with all the princes of Moab. Then Balaam recited his poem:

From Aram[a] Balak has led me here,
    Moab’s king, from the mountains of Qedem:(A)
“Come, curse for me Jacob,
    come, denounce Israel.”
How can I lay a curse on the one whom God has not cursed?
    How denounce the one whom the Lord has not denounced?
For from the top of the crags I see him,
    from the heights I behold him.
Here is a people that lives apart[b]
    and does not reckon itself among the nations.
10 Who has ever counted the dust of Jacob,
    who numbered Israel’s dust-cloud?[c]
May I die the death of the just,
    may my end be like theirs!

11 “What have you done to me?” cried Balak to Balaam. “It was to lay a curse on my foes that I brought you here; but instead, you have blessed them!” 12 Balaam replied, “Is it not what the Lord puts in my mouth that I take care to repeat?”

Romans 7:13-25

13 Did the good, then, become death for me? Of course not! Sin, in order that it might be shown to be sin, worked death in me through the good, so that sin might become sinful beyond measure through the commandment.(A) 14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am carnal, sold into slavery to sin.(B) 15 What I do, I do not understand. For I do not do what I want, but I do what I hate. 16 Now if I do what I do not want, I concur that the law is good. 17 So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 18 For I know that good does not dwell in me, that is, in my flesh. The willing is ready at hand, but doing the good is not.(C) 19 For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want. 20 Now if [I] do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. 21 So, then, I discover the principle that when I want to do right, evil is at hand. 22 For I take delight in the law of God, in my inner self, 23 (D)but I see in my members another principle at war with the law of my mind, taking me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.[a] 24 Miserable one that I am! Who will deliver me from this mortal body? 25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord. Therefore, I myself, with my mind, serve the law of God but, with my flesh, the law of sin.(E)

Matthew 21:33-46

33 (A)“Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard,[a] put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey.(B) 34 When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants[b] to the tenants to obtain his produce. 35 But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. 36 Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way. 37 Finally, he sent his son to them, thinking, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 [c]But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.’ 39 [d](C)They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?” 41 They answered[e] him, “He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times.” 42 [f](D)Jesus said to them, “Did you never read in the scriptures:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;
by the Lord has this been done,
    and it is wonderful in our eyes’?

43 [g]Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit. 44 [[h] The one who falls on this stone will be dashed to pieces; and it will crush anyone on whom it falls.]” 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees[i] heard his parables, they knew that he was speaking about them. 46 And although they were attempting to arrest him, they feared the crowds, for they regarded him as a prophet.
