Psalm 97

The Lord is King

97 The Lord reigns!
    Let the earth rejoice!
        May many islands be glad!

Thick clouds are all around him;
    righteousness and justice are his throne’s foundation.
Fire goes out from his presence
    to consume his enemies on every side.
His lightning bolts light the world;
    the earth sees and shakes.
Mountains melt like wax in the Lord’s presence—
    In the presence of the Lord of all the earth.

The heavens declare his righteousness
    so that all the nations see his glory.

All who serve carved images—
    and those who praise idols—will be humiliated.
        Worship him, all you “gods”!

Zion hears and rejoices;
    the towns[a] of Judah rejoice
        on account of your justice, Lord.
For you, Lord, are the Most High above all the earth;
    you are exalted high above all divine beings.[b]

10 Hate evil, you who love the Lord!
    He guards the lives of those who love him,[c]
        delivering them from domination by[d] the wicked.
11 Light shines on the righteous;
    gladness on the morally upright.[e]
12 Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous ones!
    Give thanks at the mention of his holiness!

Psalm 99-100

The Lord is Holy

99 The Lord reigns—
    let people tremble;
he is seated above the cherubim—
    let the earth quake.
The Lord is great in Zion
    and is exalted above all peoples.
Let them praise your great and awesome name.
    He is holy!

A mighty king who loves justice,
    you have established fairness.
You have exercised justice
    and righteousness over Jacob.
Exalt the Lord our God;
    worship and bow down at his footstool;
        He is holy!

Moses and Aaron were among his priests;
    Samuel also was among those who invoked his name.
When they called on the Lord,
    he answered them.
In a pillar of cloud he spoke to them;
    they obeyed his decrees
        and the Law that he gave them.
Lord our God, you answered them;
    you were their God who forgave[a] them,
        but also avenged their evil deeds.

Exalt the Lord our God and worship at his holy mountain,
    for the Lord our God is holy!

A psalm of thanksgiving

Give Thanks to the Lord

100 Shout to the Lord all the earth!
Serve the Lord with joy.
        Come before him with a joyful shout!
Acknowledge that the Lord is God.
    He made us and we belong to him;
we are his people
    and the sheep of his pasture.
Enter his gates with thanksgiving
    and his courts with praise.
Thank him and bless his name,
for the Lord is good
        and his gracious love stands forever.
His faithfulness remains from generation to generation.

Psalm 94-95

God Avenges His Own

94 God of vengeance,
    Lord God of vengeance,
        display your splendor![a]
Stand up, judge of the earth,
    and repay the proud.

How long will the wicked, Lord,
    how long will the wicked continue to triumph?
When they speak, they spew arrogance.
    Everyone who practices iniquity brags about it.[b]

Lord, they have crushed your people,
    afflicting your heritage.
The wicked[c] kill widows and foreigners;
    they murder orphans.
They say, “The Lord cannot see,
    and the God of Jacob will not notice.”

Pay attention, you dull ones among the crowds!
    You fools! Will you ever become wise?
The one who formed[d] the ear can hear, can he not?
    The one who made the eyes can see, can he not?
10 The one who disciplines nations can rebuke them, can he not?
    The one who teaches mankind can discern, can he not?
11 The Lord knows the thoughts of human beings—
    that they are futile.

12 How blessed is the man whom you instruct, Lord,
    whom you teach from your Law,
13 keeping him calm when times are troubled
    until a pit has been dug for the wicked.
14 For the Lord will not forsake his people;
    he will not abandon his heritage.
15 Righteousness will be restored with justice,
    and all the pure of heart will follow it.

16 Who will rise up for me against the wicked?
    Who will stand for me against those who practice iniquity?
17 If the Lord had not been my helper,
    I would have quickly become silent.
18 When I say that my foot is shaking,
    your gracious love, Lord, will sustain me.
19 When my anxious inner thoughts become overwhelming,
    your comfort encourages me.

20 Will destructive national leaders,[e]
    who plan wicked things through misuse of the Law,
        be allied with you?
21 They gather together against the righteous,
    condemning the innocent to death.

22 But the Lord is my stronghold,
    and my God, the rock, is my refuge.
23 He will repay them for their sin;
    he will annihilate them because of their evil.
        The Lord our God will annihilate them.

Worship and Obedience

95 Come! Let us sing joyfully to the Lord!
    Let us shout for joy to the rock of our salvation.
Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;
    let us shout with songs of praise to him.

For the Lord is an awesome God;
    a great king above all divine beings.[f]
He holds in his hand the lowest parts of the earth
    and the mountain peaks belong to him.
The sea that he made belongs to him,
    along with the dry land that his hands formed.

Come! Let us worship and bow down;
    let us kneel in the presence of the Lord, who made us.
For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture
    and the flock in his care.[g]
If only you would listen to his voice today,
do not be stubborn like your ancestors were[h] at Meribah,
as on that day at Massah, in the wilderness,
where your ancestors tested me.
They tested me,
    even though they had seen my awesome deeds.

10 For forty years I loathed that generation, so I said,
    “They are a people whose hearts continuously err,
        and they have not understood my ways.”
11 So in my anger I declared an oath:
    “They are not to enter my place of rest.”

1 Samuel 16:1-13

David Anointed to Succeed Saul

16 The Lord told Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I’ve rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil and go. I’m sending you to Jesse from Bethlehem because I’ve chosen for myself one of his sons as king.”

Samuel said, “How can I go? Saul will hear about this[a] and kill me!”

The Lord said, “Take a heifer[b] with you and say, ‘I’ve come to offer a sacrifice to the Lord.’ You are to invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I’ll show you what you are to do. You are to anoint for me the one I tell you.”

Samuel did what the Lord said and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the town came out to meet him trembling, and said, “May your coming be in peace.”

He said, “Peace, I’ve come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Samuel[c] consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

When they arrived, Samuel[d] saw Eliab, and said, “Surely he’s the Lord’s[e] anointed.”[f]

The Lord told Samuel, “Don’t look at his appearance or his height,[g] for I’ve rejected him. Truly, God does not see[h] what man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord sees the heart.”

Then Jesse summoned Abinadab and brought him before Samuel, and he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” Then Jesse brought Shammah, and he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse brought seven of his sons before Samuel, and Samuel told Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.”

11 Then Samuel told Jesse, “Are these all the young men?” He said, “There yet remains the youngest one, and right now he’s tending the sheep.” Samuel told Jesse, “Send someone to get him,[i] for we won’t do anything else[j] until he arrives here.” 12 So he sent and brought him. He had a dark, healthy complexion, with beautiful eyes, and he was handsome. The Lord said, “Get up and anoint him, for this is the one.”

God’s Spirit Comes on David and Departs from Saul

13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed David[k] in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came on David from that day forward. Then Samuel got up and went to Ramah.

Ephesians 3:14-21

To Know the Messiah’s Love

14 This is the reason I bow my knees before the Father of our Lord Jesus, the Messiah,[a] 15 from whom every family[b] in heaven and on earth receives its name. 16 I pray[c] that he would give you, according to his glorious riches, strength in your inner being and power through his Spirit, 17 and that the Messiah[d] would make his home in your hearts through faith. Then, having been rooted and grounded in love, 18 you will be able to understand, along with all the saints, what is wide, long, high, and deep— 19 that is, you will know the love of the Messiah[e]— which transcends knowledge, and will be filled with all the fullness of God.

20 Now to the one who can do infinitely more than all we can ask or imagine according to the power that is working among[f] us— 21 to him be glory in the church and in the Messiah[g] Jesus to all generations, forever and ever! Amen.

Matthew 8:18-27

The Would-be Followers of Jesus(A)

18 When Jesus saw the large crowds around him, he gave orders to cross to the other side of the Sea of Galilee.[a] 19 Just then, a scribe came up and told him, “Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.”

20 Jesus told him,

“Foxes have holes and birds[b] have nests,
    but the Son of Man has no place to rest.”[c]

21 Then another of his disciples told him, “Lord,[d] first let me go and bury my father.”

22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Jesus Calms the Sea(B)

23 When Jesus[e] got into the boat, his disciples went with him. 24 Suddenly, a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat began to be swamped by the waves. Yet Jesus[f] kept sleeping. 25 They[g] went to him and woke him up. “Lord!” they cried, “Save us! We’re going to die!”

26 He asked them, “Why are you afraid, you who have little faith?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm.

27 The men were amazed. “What kind of man is this?” they asked. “Even the winds and the sea obey him!”
