Psalm 119:145-176

A Prayer for Deliverance

145 With all my heart I call to you;
    answer me, Lord, and I will obey your commands!
146 I call to you;
    save me, and I will keep your laws.
147 Before sunrise I call to you for help;
    I place my hope in your promise.
148 All night long I lie awake,
    to meditate on your instructions.
149 Because your love is constant, hear me, O Lord;
    show your mercy, and preserve my life!
150 My cruel persecutors are coming closer,
    people who never keep your law.
151 But you are near to me, Lord,
    and all your commands are permanent.
152 Long ago I learned about your instructions;
    you made them to last forever.

A Plea for Help

153 Look at my suffering, and save me,
    because I have not neglected your law.
154 Defend my cause, and set me free;
    save me, as you have promised.
155 The wicked will not be saved,
    for they do not obey your laws.
156 But your compassion, Lord, is great;
    show your mercy and save me!
157 I have many enemies and oppressors,
    but I do not fail to obey your laws.
158 When I look at those traitors, I am filled with disgust,
    because they do not keep your commands.
159 See how I love your instructions, Lord.
    Your love never changes, so save me!
160 The heart of your law is truth,
    and all your righteous judgments are eternal.

Dedication to the Law of the Lord

161 Powerful people attack me unjustly,
    but I respect your law.
162 How happy I am because of your promises—
    as happy as someone who finds rich treasure.
163 I hate and detest all lies,
    but I love your law.
164 Seven times each day I thank you
    for your righteous judgments.
165 Those who love your law have perfect security,
    and there is nothing that can make them fall.
166 I wait for you to save me, Lord,
    and I do what you command.
167 I obey your teachings;
    I love them with all my heart.
168 I obey your commands and your instructions;
    you see everything I do.

A Prayer for Help

169 Let my cry for help reach you, Lord!
    Give me understanding, as you have promised.
170 Listen to my prayer,
    and save me according to your promise!
171 I will always praise you,
    because you teach me your laws.
172 I will sing about your law,
    because your commands are just.
173 Always be ready to help me,
    because I follow your commands.
174 How I long for your saving help, O Lord!
    I find happiness in your law.
175 Give me life, so that I may praise you;
    may your instructions help me.
176 I wander about like a lost sheep;
    so come and look for me, your servant,
    because I have not neglected your laws.

Psalm 128-130

The Reward of Obedience to the Lord

128 Happy are those who obey the Lord,
    who live by his commands.

Your work will provide for your needs;
    you will be happy and prosperous.
Your wife will be like a fruitful vine in your home,
    and your children will be like young olive trees around your table.
A man who obeys the Lord
    will surely be blessed like this.

May the Lord bless you from Zion!
    May you see Jerusalem prosper
    all the days of your life!
May you live to see your grandchildren!

Peace be with Israel!

A Prayer against Israel's Enemies

129 Israel, tell us how your enemies have persecuted you
    ever since you were young.

“Ever since I was young,
    my enemies have persecuted me cruelly,
    but they have not overcome me.
They cut deep wounds in my back
    and made it like a plowed field.
But the Lord, the righteous one,
    has freed me from slavery.”

May everyone who hates Zion
    be defeated and driven back.
May they all be like grass growing on the housetops,
    which dries up before it can grow;
    no one gathers it up
    or carries it away in bundles.
No one who passes by will say,
    “May the Lord bless you!
    We bless you in the name of the Lord.”

A Prayer for Help

130 From the depths of my despair I call to you, Lord.
Hear my cry, O Lord;
    listen to my call for help!
If you kept a record of our sins,
    who could escape being condemned?
But you forgive us,
    so that we should stand in awe of you.

I wait eagerly for the Lord's help,
    and in his word I trust.
I wait for the Lord
    more eagerly than sentries wait for the dawn—
    than sentries wait for the dawn.

Israel, trust in the Lord,
    because his love is constant
    and he is always willing to save.
(A)He will save his people Israel
    from all their sins.

1 Samuel 12:1-6

Samuel Addresses the People

12 Then Samuel said to the people of Israel, “I have done what you asked me to do. I have given you a king to rule you, and now you have him to lead you. As for me, I am old and gray, and my sons are with you. I have been your leader from my youth until now. (A)Here I am. If I have done anything wrong, accuse me now in the presence of the Lord and the king he has chosen. Have I taken anybody's cow or anybody's donkey? Have I cheated or oppressed anyone? Have I accepted a bribe from anyone? If I have done any of these things, I will pay back what I have taken.”

The people answered, “No, you have not cheated us or oppressed us; you have not taken anything from anyone.”

Samuel replied, “The Lord and the king he has chosen are witnesses today that you have found me to be completely innocent.”

“Yes, the Lord is our witness,” they answered.

(B)Samuel continued, “The Lord is the one who chose Moses and Aaron and who brought your ancestors out of Egypt.

1 Samuel 12:16-25

16 So then, stand where you are, and you will see the great thing which the Lord is going to do. 17 It's the dry season, isn't it? But I will pray, and the Lord will send thunder and rain. When this happens, you will realize that you committed a great sin against the Lord when you asked him for a king.”

18 So Samuel prayed, and on that same day the Lord sent thunder and rain. Then all the people became afraid of the Lord and of Samuel, 19 and they said to Samuel, “Please, sir, pray to the Lord your God for us, so that we won't die. We now realize that, besides all our other sins, we have sinned by asking for a king.”

20 “Don't be afraid,” Samuel answered. “Even though you have done such an evil thing, do not turn away from the Lord, but serve him with all your heart. 21 Don't go after[a] false gods; they cannot help you or save you, for they are not real. 22 The Lord has made a solemn promise, and he will not abandon you, for he has decided to make you his own people. 23 As for me, the Lord forbid that I should sin against him by no longer praying for you. Instead, I will teach you what is good and right for you to do. 24 Obey the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. Remember the great things he has done for you. 25 But if you continue to sin, you and your king will be destroyed.”

Acts 8:14-25

14 The apostles in Jerusalem heard that the people of Samaria had received the word of God, so they sent Peter and John to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the believers that they might receive the Holy Spirit. 16 For the Holy Spirit had not yet come down on any of them; they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 Simon saw that the Spirit had been given to the believers when the apostles placed their hands on them. So he offered money to Peter and John, 19 and said, “Give this power to me too, so that anyone I place my hands on will receive the Holy Spirit.”

20 But Peter answered him, “May you and your money go to hell, for thinking that you can buy God's gift with money! 21 You have no part or share in our work, because your heart is not right in God's sight. 22 Repent, then, of this evil plan of yours, and pray to the Lord that he will forgive you for thinking such a thing as this. 23 For I see that you are full of bitter envy and are a prisoner of sin.”

24 Simon said to Peter and John, “Please pray to the Lord for me, so that none of these things you spoke of will happen to me.”

25 After they had given their testimony and proclaimed the Lord's message, Peter and John went back to Jerusalem. On their way they preached the Good News in many villages of Samaria.

Luke 23:1-12

Jesus before Pilate(A)

23 The whole group rose up and took Jesus before Pilate, where they began to accuse him: “We caught this man misleading our people, telling them not to pay taxes to the Emperor and claiming that he himself is the Messiah, a king.”

Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“So you say,” answered Jesus.

Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no reason to condemn this man.”

But they insisted even more strongly, “With his teaching he is starting a riot among the people all through Judea. He began in Galilee and now has come here.”

Jesus before Herod

When Pilate heard this, he asked, “Is this man a Galilean?” When he learned that Jesus was from the region ruled by Herod, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time. Herod was very pleased when he saw Jesus, because he had heard about him and had been wanting to see him for a long time. He was hoping to see Jesus perform some miracle. So Herod asked Jesus many questions, but Jesus made no answer. 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the Law stepped forward and made strong accusations against Jesus. 11 Herod and his soldiers made fun of Jesus and treated him with contempt; then they put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate. 12 On that very day Herod and Pilate became friends; before this they had been enemies.
