Book of Common Prayer
Lead Me in Your Righteousness
For the choir director. For [a]the flutes. A Psalm of David.
5 (A)Give ear to my words, O Yahweh,
Consider my (B)meditation.
2 Give heed to (C)the sound of my cry for help, (D)my King and my God,
For to You I pray.
3 O Yahweh, in the morning, [b]You will hear my voice;
In the (E)morning I will order my [c]prayer to You and eagerly (F)watch.
4 For You are not a God (G)who delights in wickedness;
(H)Evil does not sojourn with You.
5 The (I)boastful shall not (J)stand before Your eyes;
You (K)hate all workers of iniquity.
6 You (L)destroy those who speak falsehood;
Yahweh abhors (M)the man of bloodshed and deceit.
7 But as for me, (N)in the abundance of Your lovingkindness I will enter Your house,
[d]At Your holy temple I will (O)worship in (P)fear of You.
8 O Yahweh, (Q)lead me (R)in Your righteousness (S)because of [e]my foes;
Make Your way [f]straight before me.
9 There is (T)nothing [g]reliable in their mouth;
Their (U)inward part is destruction itself.
Their (V)throat is an open grave;
They [h]flatter with their tongue.
10 Hold them guilty, O God;
(W)By their own devices let them fall!
In the abundance of their transgressions (X)thrust them out,
For they are (Y)rebellious against You.
11 But let all who (Z)take refuge in You (AA)be glad,
Let them ever sing for joy;
And [i]may You (AB)shelter them,
That those who (AC)love Your name may exult in You.
12 For it is You who (AD)blesses the righteous one, O Yahweh,
You (AE)surround him with favor as with a large shield.
Yahweh, Rescue My Soul
For the choir director. With stringed instruments. According to the [j]Sheminith. A Psalm of David.
6 O Yahweh, (AF)do not reprove me in Your anger,
Nor discipline me in Your wrath.
2 Be gracious to me, O Yahweh, for I am (AG)pining away;
(AH)Heal me, O Yahweh, for (AI)my bones are dismayed.
3 And my (AJ)soul is greatly dismayed;
But You, O Yahweh—(AK)how long?
4 Return, O Yahweh, (AL)rescue my [k]soul;
Save me because of Your lovingkindness.
5 For (AM)there is no remembrance of You in death;
In Sheol who will give You thanks?
Do Not Forget the Afflicted
Lamedh
10 [a]Why (A)do You stand afar off, O Yahweh?
Why (B)do You hide [b]Yourself in times of distress?
2 In his (C)lofty pride the wicked [c]hotly pursues the afflicted;
[d]Let them be (D)caught in the thoughts which they have devised.
3 For the wicked (E)boasts of his (F)soul’s desire,
And [e]the greedy man curses and (G)spurns Yahweh.
4 The wicked, in the haughtiness of his countenance, (H)does not seek Him.
All his [f]thoughts are, “(I)There is no God.”
5 His ways [g](J)prosper at all times;
Your judgments are on high, (K)out of his sight;
As for all his adversaries, he snorts at them.
6 He says in his heart, “(L)I will not be shaken;
[h]From generation to generation (M)I will not be in adversity.”
Pe
7 His (N)mouth is full of curses and deceit and (O)oppression;
(P)Under his tongue is mischief and wickedness.
Ayin
8 He sits in the [i](Q)places of the villages where one lies in wait;
In the hiding places he (R)kills the innocent;
His eyes [j]stealthily watch for the [k](S)unfortunate.
9 He lies in wait in a hiding place as (T)a lion in his [l]lair;
He (U)lies in wait to catch (V)the afflicted;
He catches the afflicted when he draws him into his (W)net.
10 He [m]crouches, he [n]bows down,
And the [o]unfortunate fall [p]by his mighty ones.
11 He (X)says in his heart, “God has forgotten;
He has hidden His face; He will never see it.”
Qoph
12 Arise, O Yahweh; O God, (Y)lift up Your hand.
(Z)Do not forget the afflicted.
13 Why has the wicked (AA)spurned God?
He has said in his heart, “You will not require it.”
Resh
14 You have seen it, for You have beheld (AB)mischief and vexation to [q]take it into Your hand.
The [r](AC)unfortunate commits himself to You;
You have been the (AD)helper of the orphan.
Shin
15 (AE)Break the arm of the wicked and the evildoer,
[s](AF)Seek out his wickedness until You find none.
Tav
17 O Yahweh, You have heard the (AI)desire of the [t]humble;
You will (AJ)strengthen their heart, (AK)You will cause Your ear to give heed
18 To give justice to the (AL)orphan and the (AM)oppressed,
So that man who is of the earth will no longer cause (AN)terror.
Yahweh Is in His Holy Temple
For the choir director. Of David.
11 In Yahweh I (AO)take refuge;
How can you say to my soul, “Flee as a bird to your (AP)mountain;
2 For, behold, the wicked (AQ)bend the bow,
They [u](AR)make ready their arrow upon the string
To (AS)shoot in darkness at the upright in heart.
3 If the (AT)foundations are destroyed,
What can the righteous do?”
4 Yahweh is in His (AU)holy temple; [v]Yahweh’s (AV)throne is in heaven;
His (AW)eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.
5 Yahweh (AX)tests the righteous,
But (AY)the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates.
6 May He (AZ)rain [w]snares upon the wicked;
(BA)Fire and brimstone and (BB)burning wind will be the portion of (BC)their cup.
7 For Yahweh is (BD)righteous, (BE)He loves [x]righteousness;
The upright will (BF)behold His face.
19 Then they both went until they came to Bethlehem. Now it happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, (A)all the city was stirred because of them, and [a]the women said, “Is this Naomi?” 20 She said to them, “Do not call me [b]Naomi; call me [c]Mara, for [d](B)the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. 21 I went out full, but (C)Yahweh has caused me to return empty. Why do you call me Naomi? Yahweh has answered against me, and [e]the Almighty has brought calamity against me.”
22 So Naomi returned, and with her Ruth the Moabitess, her daughter-in-law, who returned from the fields of Moab. Now they came to Bethlehem at (D)the beginning of barley harvest.
Ruth Gleans in Boaz’ Field
2 Now Naomi had [f]a kinsman of her husband, a [g]mighty man of excellence, of the family of (E)Elimelech, whose name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitess said to Naomi, “Please let me go to the field and (F)glean among the ears of grain after one whom I may find favor in his eyes.” And she said to her, “Go, my daughter.” 3 So she went. And she came and gleaned in the field after the reapers. And [h]it so happened that she happened to come to the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech. 4 Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem and said to the reapers, “(G)May Yahweh be with you.” And they said to him, “May Yahweh bless you.” 5 Then Boaz said to his young man who was [i]in charge of the reapers, “Whose young woman is this?” 6 The young man [j]in charge of the reapers replied, “She is the young Moabite woman who returned with Naomi from the fields of Moab. 7 And she said, ‘Please let me glean and gather after the reapers among the sheaves.’ Thus she came and has remained from the morning until now; she has been sitting in the house for a little while.”
8 Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Have you not heard, my daughter? Do not go to glean in another field; furthermore, do not go on from this one, but [k]stay here with my young women. 9 Let your eyes be on the field which they reap, and go after them. Indeed, I have commanded the young men not to touch you. And if you are thirsty, go to the [l]water jars and drink from what the young men draw.” 10 Then she (H)fell on her face, bowing to the ground and said to him, “Why have I found favor in your sight that you should take notice of me, though I am a foreigner?” 11 Boaz replied to her, “All that you have done for your mother-in-law after the death of your husband has been fully told to me, and how you forsook your father and your mother and the land of your birth, and came to a people that you did not previously know. 12 (I)May Yahweh fully repay your work, and may your wages be full from Yahweh, the God of Israel, (J)under whose wings you have come to seek refuge.” 13 Then she said, “May I find favor in your eyes, my lord, for you have comforted me and indeed have spoken to the heart of your servant-woman, though I am not like one of your servant-women.”
18 This (A)command I entrust to you, Timothy, (B)my child, in accordance with the (C)prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may (D)fight the good fight, 19 keeping (E)faith and a good conscience, which some, having rejected, suffered shipwreck in regard to [a](F)their faith. 20 [b]Among these are (G)Hymenaeus and (H)Alexander, whom I have (I)handed over to Satan, so that they will be (J)taught not to blaspheme.
Exhortation to Prayer
2 First of all, then, I exhort that (K)petitions and prayers, requests and thanksgivings, be made for all men, 2 (L)for kings and all who are in [c]authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and [d]dignity. 3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of (M)God our Savior, 4 (N)who desires all men to be (O)saved and to (P)come to the [e]full knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is (Q)one God, and (R)one mediator also between God and men, the (S)man Christ Jesus, 6 who (T)gave Himself as a ransom for all, the (U)witness for [f](V)this proper time. 7 (W)For this I was appointed a [g]preacher and (X)an apostle ((Y)I am telling the truth, I am not lying) as a teacher of (Z)the Gentiles in faith and truth.
8 Therefore (AA)I want the men (AB)in every place to pray, (AC)lifting up (AD)holy hands, without wrath and dissension.
A Woman Healed on the Sabbath
10 And He was (A)teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And behold, there was a woman who for eighteen years had [a](B)a sickness caused by a spirit, and she was bent double, and could not straighten up at all. 12 But when Jesus saw her, He called her over and said to her, “Woman, you are freed from your sickness.” 13 And He (C)laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made erect again and began (D)glorifying God. 14 But (E)the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus (F)healed on the Sabbath, answered and was saying to the crowd, “(G)There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.” 15 But (H)the Lord answered him and said, “You hypocrites, (I)does not each of you on the Sabbath release his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead it away to water it? 16 And this woman, (J)being a daughter of Abraham, whom (K)Satan has bound for—behold—eighteen years, should she not have been released from this bond on the Sabbath day?” 17 And as He said this, all His opponents were being put to shame; and (L)the entire crowd was rejoicing over all the glorious things being done by Him.
