Psalm 8

God's Glory and Human Dignity[a]

O Lord, our Lord,
    your greatness is seen in all the world!
Your praise reaches up to the heavens;
(A)it is sung by children and babies.
You are safe and secure from all your enemies;
    you stop anyone who opposes you.

When I look at the sky, which you have made,
    at the moon and the stars, which you set in their places—
(B)what are human beings, that you think of them;
    mere mortals, that you care for them?

(C)Yet you made them inferior only to yourself;[b]
    you crowned them with glory and honor.
(D)You appointed them rulers over everything you made;
    you placed them over all creation:
    sheep and cattle, and the wild animals too;
    the birds and the fish
    and the creatures in the seas.

O Lord, our Lord,
    your greatness is seen in all the world!

Psalm 47

The Supreme Ruler[a]

47 Clap your hands for joy, all peoples!
    Praise God with loud songs!
The Lord, the Most High, is to be feared;
    he is a great king, ruling over all the world.
He gave us victory over the peoples;
    he made us rule over the nations.
He chose for us the land where we live,
    the proud possession of his people, whom he loves.

God goes up to his throne.
    There are shouts of joy and the blast of trumpets,
    as the Lord goes up.
Sing praise to God;
    sing praise to our king!
God is king over all the world;
    praise him with songs!

God sits on his sacred throne;
    he rules over the nations.
The rulers of the nations assemble
    with the people[b] of the God of Abraham.
More powerful than all armies is he;
    he rules supreme.

Psalm 24

The Great King[a]

24 (A)The world and all that is in it belong to the Lord;
    the earth and all who live on it are his.
He built it on the deep waters beneath the earth
    and laid its foundations in the ocean depths.

Who has the right to go up the Lord's hill?[b]
    Who may enter his holy Temple?
(B)Those who are pure in act and in thought,
    who do not worship idols
    or make false promises.
The Lord will bless them and save them;
    God will declare them innocent.
Such are the people who come to God,
    who come into the presence of the God of Jacob.

Fling wide the gates,
    open the ancient doors,
    and the great king will come in.
Who is this great king?
He is the Lord, strong and mighty,
    the Lord, victorious in battle.

Fling wide the gates,
    open the ancient doors,
    and the great king will come in.
10 Who is this great king?
The triumphant Lord—he is the great king!

Psalm 96

God the Supreme King(A)

96 Sing a new song to the Lord!
    Sing to the Lord, all the world!
Sing to the Lord, and praise him!
    Proclaim every day the good news that he has saved us.
Proclaim his glory to the nations,
    his mighty deeds to all peoples.

The Lord is great and is to be highly praised;
    he is to be honored more than all the gods.
The gods of all other nations are only idols,
    but the Lord created the heavens.
Glory and majesty surround him;
    power and beauty fill his Temple.

(B)Praise the Lord, all people on earth;
    praise his glory and might.
Praise the Lord's glorious name;
    bring an offering and come into his Temple.
Bow down before the Holy One when he appears;[a]
    tremble before him, all the earth!

10 Say to all the nations, “The Lord is king!
    The earth is set firmly in place and cannot be moved;
    he will judge the peoples with justice.”
11 Be glad, earth and sky!
    Roar, sea, and every creature in you;
12     be glad, fields, and everything in you!
The trees in the woods will shout for joy
13     when the Lord comes to rule the earth.
He will rule the peoples of the world
    with justice and fairness.

Ezekiel 1:1-14

EZEKIEL'S FIRST VISION OF GOD (1.1—7.27)

God's Throne

(A)On the fifth day of the fourth month of the thirtieth year,[a] I, Ezekiel the priest, son of Buzi, was living with the Jewish exiles by the Chebar River in Babylonia. The sky opened, and I saw a vision of God. ((B)It was the fifth year since King Jehoiachin had been taken into exile.) There in Babylonia beside the Chebar River, I heard the Lord speak to me, and I felt his power.

I looked up and saw a windstorm coming from the north. Lightning was flashing from a huge cloud, and the sky around it was glowing. Where the lightning was flashing, something shone like bronze. (C)At the center of the storm I saw what looked like four living creatures in human form, but each of them had four faces and four wings. Their legs were straight, and they had hoofs like those of a bull. They shone like polished bronze. In addition to their four faces and four wings, they each had four human hands, one under each wing. Two wings of each creature were spread out so that the creatures formed a square, with their wing tips touching. When they moved, they moved as a group without turning their bodies.

10 (D)Each living creature had four different faces: a human face in front, a lion's face at the right, a bull's face at the left, and an eagle's face at the back. 11 Two wings[b] of each creature were raised so that they touched the tips of the wings of the creatures next to it, and their other two wings were folded against their bodies. 12 Each creature faced all four directions, and so the group could go wherever they wished, without having to turn.

13 (E)Among[c] the creatures there was something that looked like a blazing torch, constantly moving. The fire would blaze up and shoot out flashes of lightning. 14 The creatures themselves darted back and forth with the speed of lightning.

Ezekiel 1:24-28

24 (A)I heard the noise their wings made in flight; it sounded like the roar of the sea, like the noise of a huge army, like the voice of Almighty God. When they stopped flying, they folded their wings, 25 but there was still a sound coming from above the dome over their heads.

26 (B)Above the dome there was something that looked like a throne made of sapphire, and sitting on the throne was a figure that looked like a human being. 27 (C)The figure seemed to be shining like bronze in the middle of a fire. It shone all over with a bright light 28 that had in it all the colors of the rainbow. This was the dazzling light which shows the presence of the Lord.

God Calls Ezekiel to Be a Prophet

When I saw this, I fell face downward on the ground. Then I heard a voice

Hebrews 2:5-18

The One Who Leads Us to Salvation

God has not placed the angels as rulers over the new world to come—the world of which we speak. (A)Instead, as it is said somewhere in the Scriptures:

“What are human beings, O God, that you should think of them;
    mere human beings, that you should care for them?
You made them for a little while lower than the angels;
    you crowned them with glory and honor,[a]
    and made them rulers over all things.”

It says that God made them “rulers over all things”; this clearly includes everything. We do not, however, see human beings ruling over all things now. But we do see Jesus, who for a little while was made lower than the angels, so that through God's grace he should die for everyone. We see him now crowned with glory and honor because of the death he suffered. 10 It was only right that God, who creates and preserves all things, should make Jesus perfect through suffering, in order to bring many children to share his glory. For Jesus is the one who leads them to salvation.

11 He purifies people from their sins, and both he and those who are made pure all have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them his family. 12 (B)He says to God,

“I will tell my people what you have done;
    I will praise you in their meeting.”

13 (C)He also says, “I will put my trust in God.” And he also says, “Here I am with the children that God has given me.”

14 Since the children, as he calls them, are people of flesh and blood, Jesus himself became like them and shared their human nature. He did this so that through his death he might destroy the Devil, who has the power over death, 15 and in this way set free those who were slaves all their lives because of their fear of death. 16 (D)For it is clear that it is not the angels that he helps. Instead, he helps the descendants of Abraham. 17 This means that he had to become like his people in every way, in order to be their faithful and merciful High Priest in his service to God, so that the people's sins would be forgiven. 18 And now he can help those who are tempted, because he himself was tempted and suffered.

Matthew 28:16-20

Jesus Appears to His Disciples(A)

16 (B)The eleven disciples went to the hill in Galilee where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him, even though some of them doubted. 18 Jesus drew near and said to them, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. 19 (C)Go, then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, 20 and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always, to the end of the age.”
