Psalm 30

Joy in the Morning

A psalm; a dedication song for the house. Davidic.

I will exalt You, Lord,
because You have lifted me up(A)
and have not allowed my enemies
to triumph over me.(B)
Lord my God,
I cried to You for help, and You healed me.(C)
Lord, You brought me up from Sheol;(D)
You spared me from among those
going down[a] to the Pit.(E)

Sing to Yahweh, you His faithful ones,
and praise His holy name.(F)
For His anger lasts only a moment,
but His favor, a lifetime.
Weeping may spend the night,
but there is joy in the morning.(G)

When I was secure, I said,
“I will never be shaken.”(H)
Lord, when You showed Your favor,
You made me stand like a strong mountain;(I)
when You hid Your face, I was terrified.(J)
Lord, I called to You;
I sought favor from my Lord:(K)
“What gain is there in my death,
if I go down to the Pit?
Will the dust praise You?
Will it proclaim Your truth?(L)
10 Lord, listen and be gracious to me;
Lord, be my helper.”(M)

11 You turned my lament into dancing;
You removed my sackcloth
and clothed me with gladness,(N)
12 so that I can sing to You and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will praise You forever.(O)

Psalm 32

Psalm 32

The Joy of Forgiveness

Davidic. A Maskil.

How joyful is the one
whose transgression is forgiven,
whose sin is covered!(A)
How joyful is the man
the Lord does not charge with sin(B)
and in whose spirit is no deceit!(C)

When I kept silent, my bones became brittle
from my groaning all day long.(D)
For day and night Your hand was heavy on me;(E)
my strength was drained[a]
as in the summer’s heat.(F)Selah
Then I acknowledged my sin to You
and did not conceal my iniquity.
I said,
“I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,”
and You took away the guilt of my sin.(G)Selah

Therefore let everyone who is faithful pray to You
at a time that You may be found.[b](H)
When great floodwaters come,
they will not reach him.(I)
You are my hiding place;(J)
You protect me from trouble.(K)
You surround me with joyful shouts of deliverance.Selah

I will instruct you and show you the way to go;(L)
with My eye on you, I will give counsel.(M)
Do not be like a horse or mule,
without understanding,
that must be controlled with bit and bridle
or else it will not come near you.(N)

10 Many pains come to the wicked,(O)
but the one who trusts in the Lord
will have faithful love surrounding him.(P)
11 Be glad in the Lord and rejoice,
you righteous ones;
shout for joy,
all you upright in heart.(Q)

Psalm 42-43

BOOK II
(Psalms 42–72)

Psalm 42

Longing for God

For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah.

As a deer longs for streams of water,
so I long for You, God.(A)
I thirst for God, the living God.
When can I come and appear before God?(B)
My tears have been my food day and night,
while all day long people say to me,
“Where is your God?”(C)
I remember this as I pour out my heart:(D)
how I walked with many,
leading the festive procession to the house of God,
with joyful and thankful shouts.(E)

Why am I so depressed?
Why this turmoil within me?
Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him,
my Savior and my God.(F)
I[a] am deeply depressed;
therefore I remember You from the land of Jordan
and the peaks of Hermon, from Mount Mizar.(G)
Deep calls to deep in the roar of Your waterfalls;
all Your breakers and Your billows have swept over me.(H)
The Lord will send His faithful love by day;(I)
His song will be with me in the night—
a prayer to the God of my life.

I will say to God, my rock,(J)
“Why have You forgotten me?
Why must I go about in sorrow
because of the enemy’s oppression?”(K)
10 My adversaries taunt me,
as if crushing my bones,
while all day long they say to me,
“Where is your God?”(L)
11 Why am I so depressed?
Why this turmoil within me?
Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him,
my Savior and my God.(M)

Psalm 43[b]

Vindicate me, God, and defend my cause
against an ungodly nation;
rescue me from the deceitful and unjust man.(N)
For You are the God of my refuge.
Why have You rejected me?
Why must I go about in sorrow
because of the enemy’s oppression?(O)

Send Your light and Your truth; let them lead me.(P)
Let them bring me to Your holy mountain,
to Your dwelling place.(Q)
Then I will come to the altar of God,
to God, my greatest joy.(R)
I will praise You with the lyre,
God, my God.(S)

Why am I so depressed?
Why this turmoil within me?
Put your hope in God, for I will still praise Him,
my Savior and my God.(T)

Deuteronomy 7:17-26

17 “If you say to yourself, ‘These nations are greater than I; how can I drive them out?’ 18 do not be afraid of them. Be sure to remember what the Lord your God did to Pharaoh and all Egypt: 19 the great trials that you saw, the signs and wonders, the strong hand and outstretched arm, by which the Lord your God brought you out. The Lord your God will do the same to all the peoples you fear. 20 The Lord your God will also send the hornet against them until all the survivors and those hiding from you perish.(A) 21 Don’t be terrified of them, for the Lord your God, a great and awesome God, is among you. 22 The Lord your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be able to destroy them all at once; otherwise, the wild animals will become too numerous for you.(B) 23 The Lord your God will give them over to you and throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24 He will hand their kings over to you, and you will wipe out their names under heaven. No one will be able to stand against you; you will annihilate them. 25 You must burn up the carved images of their gods. Don’t covet the silver and gold on the images and take it for yourself, or else you will be ensnared by it, for it is abhorrent to the Lord your God. 26 You must not bring any abhorrent thing into your house, or you will be set apart for destruction like it. You are to utterly detest and abhor it, because it is set apart for destruction.

Titus 3

Christian Living among Outsiders

Remind them to be submissive(A) to rulers and authorities, to obey, to be ready for every good work, to slander no one, to avoid fighting, and to be kind, always showing gentleness(B) to all people. For we too were once foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved by various passions(C) and pleasures,(D) living in malice and envy, hateful, detesting one another.

But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love
for mankind appeared,(E)
He saved us(F)
not by works of righteousness that we had done,(G)
but according to His mercy,(H)
through the washing of regeneration(I)
and renewal by the Holy Spirit.(J)
He poured out this Spirit on us abundantly(K)
through Jesus Christ our Savior,
so that having been justified by His grace,(L)
we may become heirs with the hope of eternal life.(M)

This saying is trustworthy.(N) I want you to insist on these things, so that those who have believed God might be careful to devote themselves to good works. These are good and profitable for everyone. But avoid foolish debates,(O) genealogies,(P) quarrels,(Q) and disputes about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. 10 Reject a divisive(R) person after a first and second warning,(S) 11 knowing that such a person is perverted and sins, being self-condemned.

Final Instructions and Closing

12 When I send Artemas or Tychicus to you,(T) make every effort to come to me(U) in Nicopolis, for I have decided to spend the winter there. 13 Diligently help Zenas the lawyer and Apollos(V) on their journey, so that they will lack(W) nothing.

14 And our people must also learn to devote themselves to good works for cases of urgent need, so that they will not be unfruitful.(X) 15 All those who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with all of you.(Y)

John 1:43-51

Philip and Nathanael

43 The next day He[a] decided to leave for Galilee. Jesus found Philip(A) and told him, “Follow Me!”

44 Now Philip was from Bethsaida,(B) the hometown of Andrew and Peter. 45 Philip found Nathanael[b](C) and told him, “We have found the One Moses wrote about in the Law (and so did the prophets(D)): Jesus the son of Joseph,(E) from Nazareth!”(F)

46 “Can anything good(G) come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him.

“Come and see,” Philip answered.

47 Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said about him, “Here is a true Israelite;(H) no deceit is in him.”

48 “How do you know me?” Nathanael asked.

“Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered.

49 “Rabbi,”(I) Nathanael replied, “You are the Son(J) of God! You are the King of Israel!”(K)

50 Jesus responded to him, “Do you believe only because I told you I saw you under the fig tree? You[c] will see greater things than this.” 51 Then He said, “I assure you: You[d] will see heaven opened and the angels of God(L) ascending and descending(M) on the Son of Man.”(N)
