Psalm 146-147

The 1st Hallelujah Psalm[a]

146 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
I say to myself, ‘Praise the Lord!’
I will praise the Lord through all my life.
While I am alive, I will always sing to praise my God.
Do not trust in human leaders.
    No human can save you.
When they die, they return to the ground.
On that day, their plans come to an end.
The person who knows that the God of Jacob will help him is a happy person![b]
If he trusts in the Lord as his God, he is happy.
The Lord made the skies, the earth and the sea.
He also made everything that is in them.
He always does what he has promised to do.
He helps poor people to receive justice.
He gives food to the hungry.
He makes people that are in a prison go free.
The Lord makes blind people see again.
The Lord lifts up people who have fallen down.
The Lord loves people who are righteous.
The Lord takes care of strangers who live among us.
He helps widows and children who have no family.
But he stops wicked people doing what they want.
10 The Lord will rule as king for ever!
Zion's people, he will always be your God
    and your descendants' God.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

The 2nd Hallelujah Psalm

147 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
It is good to sing to praise our God!
Yes, it is right to praise him and it makes us happy.
The Lord is building Jerusalem again.
He is bringing home the Israelite exiles.
He makes people who are very sad well again.[c]
He helps their wounds to get better.
He decided how many stars there should be in the sky.
He has given a name to each of them.
Our Lord is great and very powerful.
    He understands everything!
The Lord gives help to poor people,
but he knocks down wicked people to the ground.
Offer a song to the Lord,
to thank him for what he has done.
Make music with a harp
    to praise our God.
He fills the sky with clouds.
He sends rain to make the earth wet.
He causes grass to grow on the hills.
He gives food for the animals to eat.
He feeds the young ravens when they cry.[d]
10 If a horse is very strong,
    that does not please him.
If a soldier is brave,
that does not make him happy.
11 Who does make the Lord happy?
People who respect him and serve him well.
People who trust him because they know he loves them.
12 Jerusalem's people, praise the Lord!
Yes, Zion's people, praise your God![e]
13 Praise him because he makes your city's gates strong.
He blesses the people who live there.
14 He causes your borders to be safe from your enemies.
He gives you lots of the best wheat to eat.
15 He sends his commands to reach all the earth.
Very soon the whole world knows what he wants.
16 He covers the earth with snow,
    like a white blanket.
He puts white frost everywhere,
like ashes that the wind blows.
17 He throws hail from the sky,
    like small stones.
When he sends a cold wind,
    nobody can continue to stand.
18 Then he commands it all to melt.
He makes the warm wind blow,
and the ice becomes streams of water.
19 He sends his message to Jacob's descendants.
He gives his rules and laws to Israel's people.[f]
20 He has not done that for any other nation.
They do not know his laws.[g]
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Psalm 111-113

The Lord does great things[a]

111 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
I will thank the Lord with all that I am,
when we, his people, meet together.
The Lord does great things!
People who enjoy them,
    think carefully about them.
Everything that he does
shows that he is a very great king!
He will always do what is completely right.
The Lord causes us to remember his miracles.
He is kind and he forgives people.
He gives food to the people who serve him.
He always remembers the covenant
that he made with his people.
He said that he would use his great power
    to help his people.
He has given to them
the lands where other nations lived.
He is always honest and fair
in the things that he does.
His rules help people to live well.
They will continue to be right for all time.
People should trust those rules and obey them.
He rescued his people
    so that they became free.
He made his covenant with them
so that it would continue for ever.
His name is holy,
and people should respect him with fear.
10 If you want to live in a wise way,
    respect and obey the Lord.[b]
Everyone who lives in the way that he teaches
    will understand what is right.
People should praise the Lord for ever!

God makes his people strong[c]

112 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
When someone respects the Lord with fear,
    God has blessed that person!
He is happy to obey the Lord's commands.
His children will become powerful in the land.
God will bless their descendants who serve him.
His family will have valuable things,
    and they will be rich.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
God's light shines on those who serve him,
even when they are in a dark place.
God blesses those who are kind to others,
and who do what is right and fair.
People who are kind and lend money to others,
and who work in an honest way,
    will enjoy a good life.
Righteous people will never fail.
    People will always remember them.
They are not afraid to hear bad news.
They are brave,
because they trust in the Lord.
Their thoughts are strong
and they will not be afraid.
They know that they will win against their enemies.
They give their things to help poor people.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
They will be powerful
    and people will respect them.
10 When wicked people see this,
    they will be angry.
They will show their teeth in anger,
    but then they will disappear.
Whatever wicked people want,
    they will never get it.

Hallelujah, God helps weak people[d]

113 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
Servants of the Lord, praise him!
Praise the name of the Lord!
Everyone should praise the Lord
    now and for ever!
The Lord deserves that people praise him,
from where the sun rises in the east,
to where it goes down in the west.
The Lord rules over all nations.
His glory is great
    higher than the heavens!
There is nobody like the Lord our God.
He sits on his throne high above us.
He bends down to look below,
at the sky and the earth.
He lifts poor people out of the dirt.
And he lifts up weak people from the ashes.
He gives them a seat with princes,
the princes who rule his own people.
He makes the wife who cannot give birth
into a happy mother of children.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Isaiah 40:1-11

God's promises to his people

40 Your God says, ‘Comfort my people.
    Yes, comfort them.
Speak kindly to the people in Jerusalem.
Tell them that their time of trouble has now finished.
Their punishment has been enough.
The Lord has made them pay for their sins.
He has made them pay twice.’

Somebody's voice is shouting,

‘Prepare a way in the wilderness for the Lord.
Make a straight road in the desert for our God.
Raise up every valley,
and bring down every mountain and hill.
The rough ground and the ground that has rocks
    will become flat.
Then the great glory of the Lord will appear!
All people will see it at the same time.
The Lord himself has promised this.’

A voice is saying, ‘Shout!’
But I say, ‘What should I shout?’
‘Shout that all people are like grass.
Their promises are like the flowers in a field.
Grass quickly dies,
and flowers fall to the ground.
The Lord causes this to happen,
when he sends a wind to blow on them.
It is true. People are like grass.
Grass quickly dies,
and flowers fall to the ground.
But God's promise will be true for ever.’

Zion, you have good news to tell to people!
So go up onto a high mountain.
Yes, Jerusalem, shout the good news!
Shout aloud, and do not be afraid.
Say to the towns in Judah, ‘Here is your God!’
10 Look! The Almighty Lord is coming with power.
He will use his great strength to rule the people.
Look again! He is bringing his gifts with him.
He brings the prize that he has won in battle.
11 He takes care of his people,
like a shepherd who takes care of his sheep.[a]
He picks up the young lambs
and he carries them near to his heart.
He carefully leads the mother sheep that have lambs.

Hebrews 1:1-12

In Jesus, God has shown us who he is

Many years ago, God spoke to our ancestors by his prophets.[a] He spoke many times and in many different ways. But in these last days, he has spoken to us in his Son.[b] In the beginning, God worked through his Son to make the whole universe. He decided that everything should belong to his Son. The Son shows us completely what God is like. He shines with God's great glory. His nature is the same as God's nature. The Son's powerful word causes everything to continue. He himself made it possible for us to be clean from our sins. After he had done that, he returned to heaven. He went and he sat at the right side of God, who rules with all authority.[c]

God's Son is greater than the angels

That shows us that God's Son is much greater than the angels. God has given him a name that shows he is more important than they are. God never said this to any angel:

‘You are my Son.
Today I have become your Father.’[d]

In another place in the Bible, God says,

‘I will be his Father,
and he will be my Son.’[e]

Also, when God was ready to bring his greatest Son into the world, he said:

‘All God's angels must worship him.’

God speaks about the angels like this:

‘God makes his angels like winds.
They serve him like fires that burn brightly.’

But this is what God says to his Son:

‘You are God and you will rule as King for ever!
You will rule your kingdom in a completely good way.
You love everything that is right.
And you hate everything that is wrong.
Because of that, you will be completely happy.
I am your God and I have blessed you.
I have chosen you to be greater than others who are with you.’

10 The Bible also says this:

‘Lord, in the beginning you made the earth.
With your own power, you also made everything above the earth.
11 All these things will come to an end.
But as for you, you will continue for ever.
Like clothes, those things will all become old.
12 Then you will put them away like an old coat.
You will change them, like people change clothes.
But you will always continue to be the same.
Your life will never come to an end.’

John 1:1-7

The Word became human

In the beginning, the Word was already there. The Word was with God. The Word was God.[a] He was with God from the beginning. God made all things through the Word. God did not make anything without him. It is the Word who caused everything to live. Because of this, he has brought light to all people. The light shines in the dark, and the dark cannot put out the light.[b]

God sent a man to bring his message. His name was John.[c] He came to tell people about the light. God wanted everyone to believe in the one who is the light.

John 1:19-20

John the Baptist is not the Messiah

19 The Jewish leaders sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask John, ‘Who are you?’[a] 20 John did not refuse to answer. He said, ‘I am not the Messiah.’

John 1:29-34

29 The next day, John saw Jesus, who was coming towards him. John said, ‘Look! Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of people in the world.[a] 30 This is the man that I told you about. I told you, “He comes after me, but he is greater than I am. He was already there before I was born.” 31 I did not know him. But I had to show Israel's people who he was. That is why I am baptizing people with water.’

32 Then John told them, ‘I saw God's Spirit come down from heaven. He came down like a dove and he stayed on Jesus. 33 I would not have known who Jesus was. But God had sent me to baptize people with water. And God told me, “You will see the Spirit come down. He will stay on someone. That is the person who will baptize people with my Holy Spirit.” 34 Now I have seen this. So I can tell you that this is God's Son.’
