Psalm 41

Psalm 41

Victory in Spite of Betrayal

For the choir director. A Davidic psalm.

Happy is one who cares for the poor;
the Lord will save him in a day of adversity.(A)
The Lord will keep him and preserve him;
he will be blessed in the land.(B)
You will not give him over to the desire of his enemies.(C)
The Lord will sustain him on his sickbed;
You will heal him on the bed where he lies.(D)

I said, “Lord, be gracious to me;
heal me, for I have sinned against You.”(E)
My enemies speak maliciously about me:
“When will he die and be forgotten?”(F)
When one of them comes to visit, he speaks deceitfully;
he stores up evil in his heart;
he goes out and talks.(G)
All who hate me whisper together about me;
they plan to harm me.(H)
“Lethal poison has been poured into him,
and he won’t rise again from where he lies!”(I)
Even my friend[a] in whom I trusted,
one who ate my bread,
has raised his heel against me.(J)

10 But You, Lord, be gracious to me and raise me up;
then I will repay them.(K)
11 By this I know that You delight in me:(L)
my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.(M)
12 You supported me because of my integrity(N)
and set me in Your presence forever.(O)

13 May Yahweh, the God of Israel, be praised
from everlasting to everlasting.
Amen and amen.(P)

Psalm 52

Psalm 52

God Judges the Proud

For the choir director. A Davidic Maskil. When Doeg the Edomite went and reported to Saul, telling him, “David went to Ahimelech’s house.”(A)

Why brag about evil, you hero!(B)
God’s faithful love is constant.(C)
Like a sharpened razor,
your tongue devises destruction,
working treachery.(D)
You love evil instead of good,
lying instead of speaking truthfully.(E)Selah
You love any words that destroy,
you treacherous tongue!(F)

This is why God will bring you down forever.
He will take you, ripping you out of your tent;
He will uproot you from the land of the living.(G)Selah
The righteous will look on with awe
and will ridicule him:(H)
“Here is the man
who would not make God his refuge,
but trusted in the abundance of his riches,
taking refuge in his destructive behavior.”[a](I)

But I am like a flourishing olive tree
in the house of God;(J)
I trust in God’s faithful love forever and ever.(K)
I will praise You forever for what You have done.
In the presence of Your faithful people,
I will put my hope in Your name, for it is good.(L)

Psalm 44

Psalm 44

Israel’s Complaint

For the choir director. A Maskil of the sons of Korah.

God, we have heard with our ears—
our ancestors have told us—
the work You accomplished in their days,
in days long ago:(A)
to plant them,
You drove out the nations with Your hand;
to settle them,
You crushed the peoples.(B)
For they did not take the land by their sword—
their arm did not bring them victory—
but by Your right hand, Your arm,
and the light of Your face,
for You were pleased with them.(C)

You are my King, my God,
who ordains[a] victories for Jacob.(D)
Through You we drive back our foes;
through Your name we trample our enemies.(E)
For I do not trust in my bow,
and my sword does not bring me victory.(F)
But You give us victory over our foes
and let those who hate us be disgraced.(G)
We boast in God all day long;
we will praise Your name forever.(H)Selah

But You have rejected and humiliated us;
You do not march out with our armies.(I)
10 You make us retreat from the foe,
and those who hate us
have taken plunder for themselves.(J)
11 You hand us over to be eaten like sheep
and scatter us among the nations.(K)
12 You sell Your people for nothing;
You make no profit from selling them.(L)
13 You make us an object of reproach to our neighbors,
a source of mockery and ridicule to those around us.(M)
14 You make us a joke among the nations,
a laughingstock[b] among the peoples.(N)
15 My disgrace is before me all day long,
and shame has covered my face,(O)
16 because of the voice of the scorner and reviler,
because of the enemy and avenger.(P)

17 All this has happened to us,
but we have not forgotten You
or betrayed Your covenant.(Q)
18 Our hearts have not turned back;
our steps have not strayed from Your path.(R)
19 But You have crushed us in a haunt of jackals
and have covered us with deepest darkness.(S)
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
and spread out our hands to a foreign god,(T)
21 wouldn’t God have found this out,
since He knows the secrets of the heart?(U)
22 Because of You we are slain all day long;
we are counted as sheep to be slaughtered.(V)

23 Wake up, Lord! Why are You sleeping?
Get up! Don’t reject us forever!(W)
24 Why do You hide Yourself
and forget our affliction and oppression?(X)
25 For we have sunk down to the dust;
our bodies cling to the ground.(Y)
26 Rise up! Help us!
Redeem us because of Your faithful love.(Z)

Isaiah 8:16-9:1

16 Bind up the testimony.(A)
Seal up the instruction(B) among my disciples.
17 I will wait for the Lord,(C)
who is hiding His face from the house of Jacob.(D)
I will wait for Him.

18 Here I am with the children the Lord has given me(E) to be signs and wonders in Israel from the Lord of Hosts who dwells on Mount Zion. 19 When they say to you, “Consult the spirits of the dead and the spiritists who chirp and mutter,”(F) shouldn’t a people consult their God?[a] Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living?(G) 20 To the law and to the testimony!(H) If they do not speak according to this word, there will be no dawn for them.

21 They will wander through the land, dejected and hungry. When they are famished, they will become enraged, and, looking upward, will curse their king and their God. 22 They will look toward the earth(I) and see only distress, darkness, and the gloom of affliction, and they will be driven into thick darkness.

Birth of the Prince of Peace

[b]Nevertheless, the gloom of the distressed land will not be like that of the former times when He humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.(J) But in the future He will bring honor to the Way of the Sea, to the land east of the Jordan, and to Galilee of the nations.

2 Peter 1:1-11

Greeting

Simeon[a] Peter,(A) a slave and an apostle(B) of Jesus Christ:

To those who have obtained a faith of equal privilege with ours[b] through the righteousness(C) of our God and Savior(D) Jesus Christ.

May grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God(E) and of Jesus our Lord.

Growth in the Faith

His[c] divine power(F) has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge(G) of Him who called(H) us by[d] His own glory and goodness. By these He has given us very great and precious promises,(I) so that through them you may share in the divine nature,(J) escaping the corruption that is in the world because of evil desires. For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control,(K) self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection,(L) and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they will keep you from being useless(M) or unfruitful(N) in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. The person who lacks these things is blind and shortsighted and has forgotten the cleansing from his past sins. 10 Therefore, brothers, make every effort to confirm your calling and election,(O) because if you do these things you will never stumble. 11 For in this way, entry into the eternal kingdom(P) of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be richly supplied to you.

Luke 22:39-53

The Prayer in the Garden

39 He went out and made His way(A) as usual(B) to the Mount of Olives,(C) and the disciples followed Him. 40 When He reached the place,(D) He told them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”(E) 41 Then He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray,(F) 42 “Father, if You are willing, take this cup(G) away from Me—nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.”

[43 Then an angel from heaven(H) appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 Being in anguish,(I) He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.][a] 45 When He got up from prayer and came to the disciples, He found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief.[b] 46 “Why are you sleeping?” He asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation.”

The Judas Kiss

47 While(J) He was still speaking, suddenly a mob was there, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss Him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?” 50 Then one of them struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus responded, “No more of this!”[c] And touching his ear, He healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?[d] 53 Every day while I was with you in the temple complex,(K) you never laid a hand on Me. But this is your hour(L)—and the dominion of darkness.”(M)
