Psalm 105

God’s Faithfulness to His People

Give thanks to Yahweh, call on His name;
proclaim His deeds among the peoples.(A)
Sing to Him, sing praise to Him;
tell about all His wonderful works!(B)
Honor His holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek Yahweh rejoice.(C)
Search for the Lord and for His strength;
seek His face always.(D)
Remember the wonderful works He has done,
His wonders, and the judgments He has pronounced,[a](E)
you offspring of Abraham His servant,
Jacob’s descendants—His chosen ones.(F)

He is the Lord our God;
His judgments govern the whole earth.(G)
He remembers His covenant forever,
the promise He ordained
for a thousand generations(H)
the covenant He made with Abraham,
swore[b] to Isaac,(I)
10 and confirmed to Jacob as a decree
and to Israel as an everlasting covenant:(J)
11 “I will give the land of Canaan to you
as your inherited portion.”(K)

12 When they were few in number,
very few indeed,
and temporary residents in Canaan,(L)
13 wandering from nation to nation
and from one kingdom to another,(M)
14 He allowed no one to oppress them;
He rebuked kings on their behalf:(N)
15 “Do not touch My anointed ones,(O)
or harm My prophets.”(P)

16 He called down famine against the land
and destroyed the entire food supply.(Q)
17 He had sent a man ahead of them—
Joseph, who was sold as a slave.(R)
18 They hurt his feet with shackles;
his neck was put in an iron collar.(S)
19 Until the time his prediction came true,
the word of the Lord tested him.(T)
20 The king sent for him and released him;
the ruler of peoples set him free.(U)
21 He made him master of his household,
ruler over all his possessions(V)
22 binding[c] his officials at will
and instructing his elders.(W)

23 Then Israel went to Egypt;
Jacob lived as a foreigner in the land of Ham.[d](X)
24 The Lord[e] made His people very fruitful;
He made them more numerous than their foes,(Y)
25 whose hearts He turned to hate His people
and to deal deceptively with His servants.(Z)
26 He sent Moses His servant,
and Aaron, whom He had chosen.(AA)
27 They performed His miraculous signs among them,
and wonders in the land of Ham.[f](AB)
28 He sent darkness, and it became dark—
for did they not defy[g] His commands?(AC)
29 He turned their water into blood
and caused their fish to die.(AD)
30 Their land was overrun with frogs,
even in their royal chambers.(AE)
31 He spoke, and insects came(AF)
gnats throughout their country.(AG)
32 He gave them hail for rain,
and lightning throughout their land.(AH)
33 He struck their vines and fig trees
and shattered the trees of their territory.(AI)
34 He spoke, and locusts came—
young locusts without number.
35 They devoured all the vegetation in their land
and consumed the produce of their land.(AJ)
36 He struck all the firstborn in their land,
all their first progeny.(AK)

37 Then He brought Israel out with silver and gold,
and no one among His tribes stumbled.(AL)
38 Egypt was glad when they left,
for the dread of Israel[h] had fallen on them.(AM)
39 He spread a cloud as a covering
and gave a fire to light up the night.(AN)
40 They asked, and He brought quail
and satisfied them with bread from heaven.(AO)
41 He opened a rock, and water gushed out;
it flowed like a stream in the desert.(AP)
42 For He remembered His holy promise
to Abraham His servant.(AQ)
43 He brought His people out with rejoicing,
His chosen ones with shouts of joy.(AR)
44 He gave them the lands of the nations,
and they inherited
what other peoples had worked for.(AS)

45 All this happened
so that they might keep His statutes
and obey His instructions.(AT)
Hallelujah!

Hosea 5:8-6:6

Blow the horn in Gibeah,(A)
the trumpet in Ramah;(B)
raise the war cry in Beth-aven:(C)
After you, Benjamin!(D)
Ephraim will become a desolation(E)
on the day of punishment;(F)
I announce what is certain
among the tribes of Israel.(G)
10 The princes of Judah are like those
who move boundary markers;(H)
I will pour out My fury(I) on them like water.(J)
11 Ephraim is oppressed, crushed in judgment,(K)
for he is determined to follow what is worthless.[a]
12 So I am like rot to Ephraim(L)
and like decay to the house of Judah.
13 When Ephraim saw his sickness
and Judah his wound,
Ephraim went to Assyria(M)
and sent a delegation to the great king.[b](N)
But he cannot cure you or heal your wound.(O)
14 For I am like a lion to Ephraim(P)
and like a young lion to the house of Judah.
Yes, I will tear them to pieces and depart.(Q)
I will carry them off,
and no one can rescue them.(R)
15 I will depart and return to My place
until they recognize their guilt and seek My face;(S)
they will search for Me in their distress.(T)

A Call to Repentance

Come, let us return to the Lord.(U)
For He has torn us,(V)
and He will heal us;(W)
He has wounded us,
and He will bind up our wounds.(X)
He will revive us after two days,(Y)
and on the third day He will raise us up
so we can live in His presence.(Z)
Let us strive to know the Lord.(AA)
His appearance is as sure as the dawn.(AB)
He will come to us like the rain,(AC)
like the spring showers that water the land.

The Lord’s First Lament

What am I going to do with you, Ephraim?(AD)
What am I going to do with you, Judah?
Your loyalty is like the morning mist(AE)
and like the early dew that vanishes.
This is why I have used the prophets
to cut them down;[c](AF)
I have killed them with the words of My mouth.
My judgment strikes like lightning.[d]
For I desire loyalty and not sacrifice,
the knowledge of God(AG) rather than burnt offerings.(AH)

Acts 21:27-36

27 As the seven days were about to end, the Jews from Asia saw him in the temple complex, stirred up the whole crowd, and seized him,(A) 28 shouting, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who teaches everyone everywhere against our people, our law, and this place. What’s more, he also brought Greeks into the temple and has profaned this holy place.”(B) 29 For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him, and they supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple complex.[a](C)

30 The whole city was stirred up, and the people rushed together. They seized Paul, dragged him out of the temple complex, and at once the gates were shut.(D) 31 As they were trying to kill him, word went up to the commander of the regiment that all Jerusalem was in chaos. 32 Taking along soldiers and centurions, he immediately ran down to them. Seeing the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul. 33 Then the commander came up, took him into custody, and ordered him to be bound with two chains.(E) He asked who he was and what he had done. 34 Some in the mob were shouting one thing and some another. Since he was not able to get reliable information because of the uproar, he ordered him to be taken into the barracks.(F) 35 When Paul got to the steps, he had to be carried by the soldiers because of the mob’s violence, 36 for the mass of people followed, yelling, “Take him away!”(G)

Luke 6:1-11

Lord of the Sabbath

On a Sabbath,[a] He passed through the grainfields.(A) His disciples were picking heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating them. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?”

Jesus answered them, “Haven’t you read what David and those who were with him did when he was hungry— how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the sacred bread, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?(B) He even gave some to those who were with him.”(C) Then He told them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

The Man with the Paralyzed Hand

On another Sabbath(D) He entered the synagogue and was teaching. A man was there whose right hand was paralyzed. The scribes and Pharisees were watching Him closely,(E) to see if He would heal on the Sabbath, so that they could find a charge against Him.(F) But He knew their thoughts(G) and told the man with the paralyzed hand, “Get up and stand here.”[b] So he got up and stood there. Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do what is good or to do what is evil, to save life or to destroy it?”(H) 10 After looking around at them all,(I) He told him, “Stretch out your hand.”(J) He did so, and his hand was restored.[c] 11 They, however, were filled with rage and started discussing with one another what they might do to Jesus.
