Psalm 70

A Call for Deliverance

For the choir director. Davidic. To bring remembrance.(A)

God, deliver me.
Hurry to help me, Lord!(B)

Let those who seek my life
be disgraced and confounded;
let those who wish me harm
be driven back and humiliated.
Let those who say, “Aha, aha!”
retreat because of their shame.(C)

Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You;
let those who love Your salvation
continually say, “God is great!”(D)
I am afflicted and needy;
hurry to me, God.
You are my help and my deliverer;
Lord, do not delay.(E)

Psalm 71

God’s Help in Old Age

Lord, I seek refuge in You;
let me never be disgraced.(F)
In Your justice, rescue and deliver me;
listen closely to me and save me.(G)
Be a rock of refuge for me,
where I can always go.
Give the command to save me,
for You are my rock and fortress.(H)
Deliver me, my God, from the power of the wicked,
from the grasp of the unjust and oppressive.(I)
For You are my hope, Lord God,
my confidence from my youth.(J)
I have leaned on You from birth;
You took me from my mother’s womb.(K)
My praise is always about You.(L)
I have become an ominous sign to many,
but You are my strong refuge.(M)
My mouth is full of praise
and honor to You all day long.(N)

Don’t discard me in my old age;
as my strength fails, do not abandon me.(O)
10 For my enemies talk about me,
and those who spy on me plot together,(P)
11 saying, “God has abandoned him;
chase him and catch him,
for there is no one to rescue him.”(Q)
12 God, do not be far from me;
my God, hurry to help me.(R)
13 May my adversaries be disgraced and destroyed;
may those who seek my harm
be covered with disgrace and humiliation.(S)
14 But I will hope continually
and will praise You more and more.(T)
15 My mouth will tell about Your righteousness
and Your salvation all day long,
though I cannot sum them up.(U)
16 I come because of the mighty acts of the Lord God;
I will proclaim Your righteousness, Yours alone.(V)

17 God, You have taught me from my youth,
and I still proclaim Your wonderful works.(W)
18 Even when I am old and gray,
God, do not abandon me.(X)
Then I will[a] proclaim Your power
to another generation,
Your strength to all who are to come.(Y)
19 Your righteousness reaches heaven, God,
You who have done great things;
God, who is like You?(Z)
20 You caused me to experience
many troubles and misfortunes,(AA)
but You will revive me again.(AB)
You will bring me up again,
even from the depths of the earth.(AC)
21 You will increase my honor
and comfort me once again.(AD)
22 Therefore, I will praise You with a harp
for Your faithfulness, my God;
I will sing to You with a lyre,
Holy One of Israel.(AE)
23 My lips will shout for joy
when I sing praise to You
because You have redeemed me.(AF)
24 Therefore, my tongue will proclaim
Your righteousness all day long,
for those who seek my harm
will be disgraced and confounded.(AG)

Psalm 74

Psalm 74

Prayer for Israel

A Maskil of Asaph.(A)

Why have You rejected us forever, God?
Why does Your anger burn
against the sheep of Your pasture?(B)
Remember Your congregation,
which You purchased long ago
and redeemed as the tribe for Your own possession.(C)
Remember Mount Zion where You dwell.(D)
Make Your way[a] to the everlasting ruins,
to all that the enemy has destroyed in the sanctuary.(E)
Your adversaries roared in the meeting place
where You met with us.[b]
They set up their emblems as signs.(F)
It was like men in a thicket of trees,
wielding axes,(G)
then smashing all the carvings
with hatchets and picks.(H)
They set Your sanctuary on fire;
they utterly[c] desecrated
the dwelling place of Your name.(I)
They said in their hearts,
“Let us oppress them relentlessly.”
They burned down every place throughout the land
where God met with us.[d](J)
There are no signs for us to see.
There is no longer a prophet.
And none of us knows how long this will last.(K)
10 God, how long will the enemy mock?
Will the foe insult Your name forever?(L)
11 Why do You hold back Your hand?
Stretch out[e] Your right hand and destroy them!(M)

12 God my King is from ancient times,
performing saving acts on the earth.(N)
13 You divided the sea with Your strength;
You smashed the heads of the sea monsters in the waters;(O)
14 You crushed the heads of Leviathan;
You fed him to the creatures of the desert.(P)
15 You opened up springs and streams;(Q)
You dried up ever-flowing rivers.(R)
16 The day is Yours, also the night;
You established the moon and the sun.(S)
17 You set all the boundaries of the earth;
You made summer and winter.(T)

18 Remember this: the enemy has mocked Yahweh,
and a foolish people has insulted Your name.(U)
19 Do not give the life of Your dove to beasts;[f]
do not forget the lives of Your poor people forever.(V)
20 Consider the covenant,(W)
for the dark places of the land are full of violence.(X)
21 Do not let the oppressed turn away in shame;
let the poor and needy praise Your name.(Y)
22 Rise up, God, defend Your cause!(Z)
Remember the insults
that fools bring against You all day long.(AA)
23 Do not forget the clamor of Your adversaries,
the tumult of Your opponents that goes up constantly.(AB)

Judges 4:4-23

Deborah, a woman who was a prophetess(A) and the wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel at that time. It was her custom to sit under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went up to her for judgment.(B)

She summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali and said to him, “Hasn’t the Lord, the God of Israel,(C) commanded you: ‘Go, deploy the troops on Mount Tabor,(D) and take with you 10,000 men from the Naphtalites(E) and Zebulunites?(F) Then I will lure Sisera commander of Jabin’s forces, his chariots, and his army at the Wadi Kishon(G) to fight against you, and I will hand him over to you.’”(H)

Barak said to her, “If you will go with me, I will go. But if you will not go with me, I will not go.”

“I will go with you,” she said, “but you will receive no honor on the road you are about to take, because the Lord will sell Sisera into a woman’s hand.” So Deborah got up and went with Barak to Kedesh. 10 Barak summoned Zebulun and Naphtali to Kedesh; 10,000 men followed him, and Deborah also went with him.

11 Now Heber the Kenite had moved away from the Kenites, the sons of Hobab,(I) Moses’ father-in-law,(J) and pitched his tent beside the oak tree of Zaanannim,(K) which was near Kedesh.

12 It was reported to Sisera that Barak son of Abinoam had gone up Mount Tabor. 13 Sisera summoned all his 900 iron chariots and all the people who were with him from Harosheth of the Nations[a] to the Wadi Kishon. 14 Then Deborah said to Barak, “Move on, for this is the day the Lord has handed Sisera over to you. Hasn’t the Lord gone before you?” So Barak came down from Mount Tabor with 10,000 men following him.

15 The Lord threw Sisera, all his charioteers, and all his army into confusion(L) with the sword before Barak. Sisera left his chariot and fled on foot. 16 Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth of the Nations,[b] and the whole army of Sisera fell by the sword; not a single man was left.

17 Meanwhile, Sisera had fled on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite, because there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the family of Heber the Kenite. 18 Jael went out to greet Sisera and said to him, “Come in, my lord. Come in with me. Don’t be afraid.” So he went into her tent, and she covered him with a rug. 19 He said to her, “Please give me a little water to drink for I am thirsty.” She opened a container of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him again. 20 Then he said to her, “Stand at the entrance to the tent. If a man comes and asks you, ‘Is there a man here?’ say, ‘No.’” 21 While he was sleeping from exhaustion, Heber’s wife Jael took a tent peg, grabbed a hammer, and went silently to Sisera. She hammered the peg into his temple and drove it into the ground, and he died.

22 When Barak arrived in pursuit of Sisera, Jael went out to greet him and said to him, “Come and I will show you the man you are looking for.” So he went in with her, and there was Sisera lying dead with a tent peg through his temple!

23 That day God subdued Jabin king of Canaan before the Israelites.

Acts 1:15-26

Matthias Chosen

15 During these days Peter stood up among the brothers[a]—the number of people who were together was about 120—and said: 16 “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled that the Holy Spirit through the mouth of David spoke in advance about Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus.(A) 17 For he was one of our number and was allotted a share in this ministry.”(B) 18 Now this man acquired a field with his unrighteous wages. He fell headfirst and burst open in the middle, and all his insides spilled out.(C) 19 This became known to all the residents of Jerusalem, so that in their own language that field is called Hakeldama (that is, Field of Blood). 20 “For it is written in the Book of Psalms:

Let his dwelling become desolate;
let no one live in it;[b] and
Let someone else take his position.(D)[c]

21 “Therefore, from among the men who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus went in and out among us— 22 beginning from the baptism of John until the day He was taken up from us—from among these, it is necessary that one become a witness with us of His resurrection.”(E)

23 So they proposed two: Joseph, called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.(F) 24 Then they prayed,(G) “You, Lord, know the hearts of all; show which of these two You have chosen(H) 25 to take the place[d] in this apostolic service(I) that Judas left to go to his own place.” 26 Then they cast lots(J) for them, and the lot fell to Matthias. So he was numbered with the 11 apostles.

Matthew 27:55-66

55 Many women who had followed Jesus from Galilee and ministered to Him were there, looking on from a distance.(A) 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.(B)

The Burial of Jesus

57 When it was evening,(C) a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph came, who himself had also become a disciple(D) of Jesus. 58 He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. Then Pilate ordered that it[a] be released. 59 So Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean, fine linen, 60 and placed it in his new tomb, which he had cut into the rock. He left after rolling a great stone against the entrance of the tomb.(E) 61 Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were seated there, facing the tomb.

The Closely Guarded Tomb

62 The next day, which followed the preparation day, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate(F) 63 and said, “Sir, we remember that while this deceiver was still alive He said, ‘After three days I will rise again.’(G) 64 Therefore give orders that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise, His disciples(H) may come, steal Him, and tell the people, ‘He has been raised from the dead.’ Then the last deception will be worse than the first.”

65 “You have[b] a guard of soldiers,”[c] Pilate told them. “Go and make it as secure as you know how.” 66 Then they went and made the tomb secure by sealing the stone and setting the guard.[d](I)
