Book of Common Prayer
45 My heart is composing a goodly matter; I speak of the verses which I have made concerning the King; my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.
2 Thou art fairer than the children of men; grace is poured into Thy lips; therefore God hath blessed Thee for ever.
3 Gird Thy sword upon Thy thigh, O most Mighty, with Thy glory and Thy majesty.
4 And in Thy majesty ride prosperously because of truth and meekness and righteousness; and Thy right hand shall teach Thee fearsome things.
5 Thine arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies, whereby the people fall under Thee.
6 Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever; the scepter of Thy Kingdom is a righteous scepter.
7 Thou lovest righteousness and hatest wickedness; therefore God, Thy God, hath anointed Thee with the oil of gladness above Thy fellows.
8 All Thy garments smell of myrrh and aloes and cassia, out of the ivory palaces whereby they have made Thee glad.
9 Kings’ daughters were among Thy honorable women; at Thy right hand stood the queen in gold of Ophir.
10 Hearken, O daughter, and consider and incline thine ear; forget also thine own people and thy father’s house.
11 So shall the King greatly desire thy beauty, for He is thy Lord; worship thou Him.
12 And the daughter of Tyre shall be there with a gift; even the rich among the people shall entreat thy favor.
13 The King’s daughter is all glorious within; her clothing is of wrought gold.
14 She shall be brought unto the King in raiment of needlework; the virgins, her companions that follow her, shall be brought unto Thee.
15 With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought; they shall enter into the King’s palace.
16 Instead of Thy fathers shall be Thy children, whom Thou mayest make princes in all the earth.
17 I will make Thy name to be remembered in all generations; therefore shall the people praise Thee for ever and ever.
47 O clap your hands, all ye people! Shout unto God with the voice of triumph!
2 For the Lord Most High is to be feared; He is a great King over all the earth.
3 He shall subdue the people under us, and the nations under our feet.
4 He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom He loved. Selah
5 God has gone up with a shout, the Lord with the sound of a trumpet.
6 Sing praises to God, sing praises! Sing praises unto our King, sing praises!
7 For God is the King of all the earth; sing ye praises with understanding.
8 God reigneth over the heathen; God sitteth upon the throne of His holiness.
9 The princes of the people are gathered together, even the people of the God of Abraham. For the shields of the earth belong unto God; He is greatly exalted.
48 Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised in the city of our God, on the mountain of His holiness.
2 Beautiful in situation, the joy of the whole earth is Mount Zion; on the sides of the north, the city of the great King.
3 God is known in her palaces as a refuge.
4 For lo, the kings were assembled, they passed by together.
5 They saw it and so they marveled; they were troubled and hastened away.
6 Fear took hold upon them there, and pain as of a woman in travail;
7 Thou breakest the ships of Tarshish with an east wind.
8 As we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God: God will establish it for ever. Selah
9 We have thought of Thy lovingkindness, O God, in the midst of Thy temple.
10 According to Thy name, O God, so is Thy praise unto the ends of the earth; Thy right hand is full of righteousness.
11 Let Mount Zion rejoice! Let the daughters of Judah be glad because of Thy judgments!
12 Walk about Zion and go round about her, count the towers thereof;
13 mark ye well her bulwarks, consider her palaces, that ye may tell it to the generation that follows.
14 For this God is our God for ever and ever; He will be our guide even unto death.
8 And the Lord said unto Joshua, “Fear not, neither be thou dismayed. Take all the people of war with thee, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given into thy hand the king of Ai and his people and his city and his land.
2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto Jericho and her king. Only the spoil thereof and the cattle thereof shall ye take for booty unto yourselves. Lay thee an ambush for the city behind it.”
3 So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai; and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valor, and sent them away by night.
4 And he commanded them, saying, “Behold, ye shall lie in wait against the city, even behind the city. Go not very far from the city, but be ye all ready;
5 and I and all the people who are with me will approach unto the city. And it shall come to pass, when they come out against us as at the first, that we will flee before them
6 (for they will come out after us) till we have drawn them from the city; for they will say, ‘They flee before us, as at the first.’ Therefore we will flee before them.
7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush and seize upon the city, for the Lord your God will deliver it into your hand.
8 And it shall be, when ye have taken the city, that ye shall set the city on fire. According to the commandment of the Lord shall ye do. See, I have commanded you.”
9 Joshua therefore sent them forth; and they went to lie in ambush, and stayed between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of Ai; but Joshua lodged that night among the people.
10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning and numbered the people, and went up, he and the elders of Israel, before the people to Ai.
11 And all the people, even the people of war who were with him, went up and drew nigh, and came before the city and pitched camp on the north side of Ai. Now there was a valley between them and Ai.
12 And he took about five thousand men and set them to lie in ambush between Bethel and Ai, on the west side of the city.
13 And when they had set the people, even all the host that was on the north of the city and those lying in wait on the west of the city, Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley.
14 And it came to pass, when the king of Ai saw it, that they hastened and rose up early; and the men of the city went out against Israel to battle, he and all his people, at a time appointed before the plain; but he knew not that there lay an ambush against him behind the city.
15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them, and fled by the way of the wilderness.
16 And all the people who were in Ai were called together to pursue after them, and they pursued after Joshua and were drawn away from the city.
17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Bethel who went not out after Israel; and they left the city open and pursued after Israel.
18 And the Lord said unto Joshua, “Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai, for I will give it into thine hand.” And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city.
19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place, and they ran as soon as he had stretched out his hand; and they entered into the city and took it, and hastened and set the city on fire.
20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they saw, and behold, the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven, and they had no power to flee this way or that way; and the people who fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers.
21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that the smoke of the city ascended, then they turned again and slew the men of Ai.
22 And the others issued out of the city against them; so they were in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side. And they smote them, so that they let none of them remain or escape;
14 Receive ye him that is weak in the faith, but not to judge his doubtful disputations.
2 For one believeth that he may eat all things, while another who is weak eateth herbs.
3 Let not him that eateth despise him that eateth not; and let not him that eateth not, judge him that eateth; for God hath received him.
4 Who art thou who judgest another man’s servant? To his own master he standeth or falleth; yea, he shall be held up, for God is able to make him stand.
5 One man esteemeth one day above another; another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.
6 He that regardeth one day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not that day, to the Lord doth he not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not and giveth God thanks.
7 For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself.
8 For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die, we die unto the Lord. Whether we live therefore or die, we are the Lord’s.
9 For to this end Christ both died, and arose, and revived, that he might be Lord both of the dead and living.
10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? Or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
11 For it is written: “‘As I live,’ saith the Lord, ‘every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.’”
12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
47 And while He yet spoke, lo, Judas, one of the twelve came, and with him a great multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and elders of the people.
48 Now he that betrayed Him gave them a sign, saying, “Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is He; hold Him fast.”
49 And forthwith he came to Jesus and said, “Hail, Master!” and kissed Him.
50 And Jesus said unto him, “Friend, why art thou come?” Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and took Him.
51 And behold, one of those who was with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest and smote off his ear.
52 Then said Jesus unto him, “Put up again thy sword into his place, for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.
53 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall at once give Me more than twelve legions of angels?
54 But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?”
55 In that same hour Jesus said to the multitudes, “Are ye come out as against a thief, with swords and staves to take Me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on Me.
56 But all this was done that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples forsook Him and fled.
