Book of Common Prayer
Psalm 82
A Plea for Righteous Judgment
A psalm of Asaph.(A)
1 God has taken His place in the divine assembly;
He judges among the gods:[a](B)
2 “How long will you judge unjustly
and show partiality to the wicked?(C)
3 Provide justice for the needy and the fatherless;
uphold the rights of the oppressed and the destitute.(D)
4 Rescue the poor and needy;
save them from the power of the wicked.”(E)
5 They do not know or understand;
they wander in darkness.(F)
All the foundations of the earth are shaken.(G)
6 I said, “You are gods;(H)
you are all sons of the Most High.(I)
7 However, you will die like men
and fall like any other ruler.”(J)
8 Rise up, God, judge the earth,
for all the nations belong to You.(K)
Psalm 87
Zion, the City of God
A psalm of the sons of Korah. A song.
1 His foundation is on the holy mountains.(A)
2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion
more than all the dwellings of Jacob.(B)
3 Glorious things are said about you,
city of God.(C)
4 “I will mention those who know Me:
Rahab, Babylon, Philistia, Tyre, and Cush—
each one was born there.”(D)
5 And it will be said of Zion,
“This one and that one were born in her.”
The Most High Himself will establish her.(E)
6 When He registers the peoples,
the Lord will record,
“This one was born there.”(F)
7 Singers and dancers alike will say,
“My whole source of joy is[a] in you.”(G)
7 How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of the herald,
who proclaims peace,
who brings news of good things,(A)
who proclaims salvation,
who says to Zion, “Your God reigns!”(B)
8 The voices of your watchmen(C)—
they lift up their voices,
shouting for joy together;
for every eye will see
when the Lord returns to Zion.
9 Be joyful, rejoice together,
you ruins of Jerusalem!(D)
For the Lord has comforted His people;(E)
He has redeemed Jerusalem.
10 The Lord has displayed His holy arm
in the sight of all the nations;(F)
all the ends of the earth will see
the salvation of our God.(G)
11 Leave, leave, go out from there!(H)
Do not touch anything unclean;
go out from her, purify yourselves,(I)
you who carry the vessels of the Lord.
12 For you will not leave in a hurry,(J)
and you will not have to take flight;
because the Lord is going before you,(K)
and the God of Israel is your rear guard.(L)
Jesus and Humanity
5 For He has not subjected to angels the world to come that we are talking about. 6 But one has somewhere testified:
What is man that You remember him,
or the son of man that You care for him?
7 You made him lower than the angels
for a short time;
You crowned him with glory and honor[a]
8 and subjected everything under his feet.[b]
For in subjecting everything to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. As it is, we do not yet see everything subjected to him.(A) 9 But we do see Jesus—made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God’s grace He might taste death for everyone—crowned with glory and honor(B) because of His suffering in death.(C)
10 For in bringing many sons to glory, it was entirely appropriate that God—all things exist for Him and through Him—should make the source[c] of their salvation perfect through sufferings.(D)
Psalm 110
The Priestly King
A Davidic psalm.
1 This is the declaration of the Lord
to my Lord:
“Sit at My right hand
until I make Your enemies Your footstool.”(A)
2 The Lord will extend Your mighty scepter from Zion.
Rule[a] over Your surrounding[b] enemies.(B)
3 Your people will volunteer
on Your day of battle.[c](C)
In holy splendor, from the womb of the dawn,
the dew of Your youth belongs to You.[d](D)
4 The Lord has sworn an oath and will not take it back:
“Forever, You are a priest
like Melchizedek.”(E)
Psalm 132
David and Zion Chosen
A song of ascents.
1 Lord, remember David
and all the hardships he endured,(A)
2 and how he swore an oath to the Lord,
making a vow to the Mighty One of Jacob:(B)
3 “I will not enter my house[a]
or get into my bed,[b]
4 I will not allow my eyes to sleep
or my eyelids to slumber(C)
5 until I find a place for the Lord,
a dwelling for the Mighty One of Jacob.”(D)
6 We heard of the ark in Ephrathah;[c](E)
we found it in the fields of Jaar.[d](F)
7 Let us go to His dwelling place;
let us worship at His footstool.(G)
8 Rise up, Lord, come to Your resting place,
You and Your powerful ark.(H)
9 May Your priests be clothed with righteousness,
and may Your godly people shout for joy.(I)
10 Because of Your servant David,
do not reject Your anointed one.[e](J)
11 The Lord swore an oath to David,
a promise He will not abandon:
“I will set one of your descendants[f]
on your throne.(K)
12 If your sons keep My covenant
and My decrees that I will teach them,
their sons will also sit on your throne forever.”(L)
13 For the Lord has chosen Zion;
He has desired it for His home:(M)
14 “This is My resting place forever;
I will make My home here
because I have desired it.(N)
15 I will abundantly bless its food;
I will satisfy its needy with bread.(O)
16 I will clothe its priests with salvation,
and its godly people will shout for joy.(P)
17 There I will make a horn grow for David;(Q)
I have prepared a lamp for My anointed one.(R)
18 I will clothe his enemies with shame,(S)
but the crown he wears[g] will be glorious.”(T)
10 He was in the world,
and the world was created(C) through Him,
yet the world did not recognize Him.
11 He came to His own,[b]
and His own people[c] did not receive Him.
12 But to all who did receive(D) Him,(E)
He gave them the right(F) to be[d] children(G) of God,(H)
to those who believe(I) in His name,(J)
13 who were born,(K)
not of blood,[e]
or of the will(L) of the flesh,(M)
or of the will of man,[f]
but of God.(N)
