Book of Common Prayer
83 1 The people of Israel pray unto the Lord to deliver them from their enemies both at home and far off, which imagined nothing but their destruction. 9 And they desire that all such wicked people may according as God was accustomed, be stricken with the stormy tempest of God’s wrath, 18 That they may know that the Lord is most high upon the earth.
A song or Psalm committed to Asaph.
1 Keep [a]not thou silence, O God: be not still, and cease not, O God.
2 For lo, thine [b]enemies make a tumult, and they that hate thee, have lifted up the head.
3 They have taken crafty counsel against thy people, and have consulted against thy [c]secret ones.
4 They have said, Come and let us [d]cut them off from being a nation: and let the name of Israel be no more in remembrance.
5 For they have consulted together in [e]heart, and have made a league [f]against thee:
6 The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagarites:
7 Gebal and Ammon, and Amalek, the Philistines, with the inhabitants of [g]Tyre.
8 Assyria also is joined with them: they have been an arm to the children [h]of Lot. Selah.
9 Do thou to them as unto the [i]Midianites: as to Sisera and as to Jabin at the river of Kishon.
10 They perished at En Dor, and were [j]dung for the earth.
11 Make them, even their princes, like (A)Oreb and like Zeeb: yea, all their princes like Zebah and like Zalmunna,
12 Which have said, Let us take for our possession the [k]habitations of God.
13 O my God, make them like unto a [l]wheel, and as the stubble before the wind.
14 As the fire burneth the forest, and as the flame setteth the mountains on fire:
15 So persecute them with thy tempest, and make them afraid with thy storm.
16 Fill their faces with shame, that they may [m]seek thy Name, O Lord.
17 Let them be confounded and troubled forever: yea, let them be put to shame, and perish,
18 That they may [n]know that thou, which art calleth Jehovah, art alone, even the most High over all the earth.
42 1 The Prophet grievously complaineth, that being letted by his persecutors, he could not be present in the congregation of God’s people, protesting that although he was separated in body from them, yet his heart was thitherward affectioned. 7 And least of all he showed that he was not so far overcome with these sorrows and thoughts, 8 but that he continually put his confidence in the Lord.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm to give instruction, [a]committed to the sons of Korah.
1 As the Hart brayeth for the rivers of water, so [b]panted my soul after thee, O God.
2 My soul thirsteth for God, even for the living God: when shall I come and appear before the presence of God?
3 [c]Mine tears have been my meat day and night, while they daily say unto me, Where is thy God?
4 When I remembered [d]these things, I poured out my very heart, because I had gone with the multitude, and led them into the house of God with the voice of singing, and praise, as a multitude that keepeth a feast.
5 Why art thou cast down, my soul, and unquiet within me? [e]wait on God: for I will yet give him thanks for the help of his presence.
6 My God, my soul is cast down within me, [f]because I remembered thee, from the land of Jordan, and Hermon, and from the mount Mizar.
7 One [g]deep calleth another deep by the noise of thy waterspouts: all thy waves and thy floods are gone over me.
8 The Lord [h]will grant his loving-kindness in the day, and in the night shall I sing of him, even a prayer unto the God of my life.
9 I will say unto God, which is my rock, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I mourning, when the enemy oppresseth me?
10 My [i]bones are cut asunder, while mine enemies reproach me, saying daily unto me, Where is thy God?
11 [j]Why art thou cast down, my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? wait on God: for I will yet give him thanks: he is my present help and my God.
43 1 He prayeth to be delivered from them that conspire against him, that he might joyfully praise God in his holy congregation.
1 Judge [k]me, O God, and defend my cause against the unmerciful [l]people: deliver me from the deceitful and wicked man.
2 For thou art the God of my strength: why hast thou put me away? why go I so mourning, when the enemy oppressed me?
3 Send thy [m]light and thy truth: let them lead me: let them bring me unto thine holy Mountain, and to thy Tabernacles.
4 Then [n]will I go unto the altar of God, even unto the God of my joy and gladness: and upon the harp will I give thanks unto thee, O God my God.
5 Why art thou cast down, my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me: [o]wait on God: for I will yet give him thanks, he is my present help and my God.
85 1 Because God withdrew not his rods from his Church after their return from Babylon, first they put him in mind of their deliverance, to the intent that he should not leave the work of his grace imperfect. 5 Next they complain of their long affliction. 8 And thirdly, they rejoice in hope of felicity promised. 9 For their deliverance was a figure of Christ’s kingdom, under the which should be perfect felicity.
To him that excelleth. A Psalm committed to the sons of Korah.
1 Lord, thou hast been [a]favorable unto thy land: thou hast brought again the captivity of Jacob.
2 Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, and [b]covered all their sins. Selah.
3 Thou hast withdrawn all thine anger, and hast turned back from the [c]fierceness of thy wrath.
4 Turn us, O God of our salvation, and release thine anger toward us.
5 Wilt thou be angry with us [d]forever? and wilt thou prolong thy wrath from one generation to another?
6 Wilt thou not turn again and quicken us, that thy people may rejoice in thee?
7 Show us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy [e]salvation.
8 I will hearken what the Lord God will say: for he will speak [f]peace unto his people, and to his Saints, that they turn not again to folly.
9 Surely his salvation is near to them that fear him, that glory may dwell in our land.
10 Mercy and truth shall meet, righteousness and peace shall kiss one another.
11 [g]Truth shall bud out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.
12 Yea, the Lord shall give good things, and our land shall give her increase.
13 [h]Righteousness shall go before him, and shall set her steps in the way.
86 1 David sore afflicted and forsaken of all, prayeth fervently for deliverance: sometimes rehearsing his miseries, 5 Sometimes the mercies received. 11 Desiring also to be instructed of the Lord, that he may fear him, and glorify his Name. 14 He complaineth also of his adversaries, and requireth to be delivered from them.
A prayer of David.
1 Incline [i]thine ear, O Lord, and hear me: for I am poor and needy.
2 Preserve thou my soul, for I am [j]merciful: my God, save thou thy servant, that trusteth in thee.
3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I [k]cry upon thee continually.
4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.
5 For thou, Lord, art good and [l]merciful, and of great kindness unto all them that call upon thee.
6 Give ear, Lord, unto my prayer, and [m]hearken to the voice of my supplication.
7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou hearest me.
8 Among the gods there is none like thee, O Lord, and there is none [n]that can do like thy works.
9 All nations whom thou hast made, shall come and [o]worship before thee, O Lord, and shall glorify thy Name.
10 For thou art great and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone.
11 [p]Teach me thy way, O Lord, and I will walk in thy truth: knit mine heart unto thee, that I may fear thy Name.
12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all mine heart: yea, I will glorify thy Name forever.
13 For great is thy mercy toward me, and thou hast delivered my soul from [q]the lowest grave.
14 O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have [r]sought my soul, and have not set thee before them.
15 But thou, O Lord, art a pitiful God and merciful, slow to anger, and great in kindness and truth.
16 Turn unto me, and have mercy upon me: give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the [s]son of thine handmaid.
17 Show a token of thy goodness toward me, that they which hate me, may see it, and be ashamed, because thou, O Lord, hast helped me and comforted me.
46 2 God assureth Jacob of his journey into Egypt. 27 The number of his family when he went into Egypt. 29 Joseph meeteth his father. 34 He teacheth his brethren what to answer to Pharaoh.
1 Then Israel took his journey with all that he had, and came to Beersheba, and [a]offered sacrifice unto the God of his father Isaac.
2 And God spake unto Israel in a vision by night, saying, Jacob, Jacob. Who answered, I am here.
3 Then he said, I am God, the God of thy father, fear not to go down into Egypt: for I will there make of thee a great nation.
4 I will [b]go down with thee into Egypt, and I will also [c]bring thee up again, and Joseph shall [d]put his hand upon thine eyes.
5 Then Jacob rose up from Beersheba: and the sons of Israel carried Jacob their father, and their children, and their wives in the chariots, which Pharaoh had sent to carry him.
6 And they took their cattle, and their goods, which they had gotten in the land of Canaan, and came into Egypt, both (A)Jacob and all his seed with him.
7 His sons and his sons’ sons with him, his daughters, and his sons’ daughters, and all his seed brought he with him into Egypt.
28 ¶ Then he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to [a]direct his way unto Goshen, and they came into the land of Goshen.
29 Then Joseph [b]made ready his chariot, and went up to Goshen to meet Israel his father, and presented himself unto him, and fell on his neck and wept upon his neck a [c]good while.
30 And Israel said unto Joseph, Now let me die since I have seen thy face, and that thou art yet alive.
31 Then Joseph said to his brethren, and to his father’s house, I will go up and show Pharaoh, and tell him, My brethren and my father’s house, which were in the land of Canaan, are come unto me.
32 And the men are [d]sheepherders, and because they are sheepherders, they have brought their sheep and their cattle, and all that they have.
33 And if Pharaoh call you, and ask you, What is your trade?
34 That ye shall say, Thy servants are men occupied about cattle, from our childhood even unto this time, both we and our fathers: that ye may dwell in the land of Goshen: for every sheep keeper is an [e]abomination unto the Egyptians.
9 1 He declareth, that from the liberty which the Lord gave him, 15 he willingly abstained, 18, 22 lest in things indifferent he should offend any. 24 He showeth that our life is like unto a race.
1 Am [a]I not an Apostle? am I not free? [b]have I not seen Jesus Christ our Lord? are ye not my work [c]in the Lord?
2 If I be not an Apostle unto others, yet doubtless I am unto you: for ye are the [d]seal of mine Apostleship in the Lord.
3 [e]My defense to him that [f]examine me, is this,
4 [g]Have we not power to [h]eat and to drink?
5 Or have we not power to lead about a wife being a [i]sister, as well as the rest of the Apostles, and as the brethren of the Lord, and Cephas?
6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power [j]not to work?
7 [k]Who [l]goeth a warfare any time at his own cost? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
8 [m]Say I these things [n]according to man? saith not the Law the same also?
9 For it is written in the Law of Moses, (A)Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn: doth God take care for [o]oxen?
10 Either saith he it not altogether for our sakes? For our sakes no doubt it is written, that he which eareth, should ear in hope, and that he that thresheth in hope, should be partaker of his hope.
11 (B)[p]If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we reap your carnal things?
12 [q]If others with you be partakers of this [r]power, are not we rather? nevertheless, we have not used this power: but suffer all things, that we should not hinder the Gospel of Christ.
13 [s]Do ye not know, that they which minister about the (C)holy things, eat of the [t]things of the Temple? and they which wait at the altar, are [u]partakers with the altar?
14 So also hath the Lord ordained, that they which preach the Gospel, should live [v]of the Gospel.
15 But I have used none of these things: [w]neither wrote I these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my rejoicing vain.
30 ¶ (A)And the Apostles gathered themselves together to Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.
31 [a]And he said unto them, Come ye apart into the wilderness, and rest a while: for there were many comers and goers, that they had not leisure to eat.
32 (B)So they went by ship out of the way into a desert place.
33 But the people saw them when they departed, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and came thither before them, and assembled unto him.
34 (C)Then Jesus went out, and saw a great multitude, and had compassion on them, because they were like sheep which had no shepherd: (D)and he began to teach them many things.
35 (E)And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, saying, This is a desert place, and now the day is far passed.
36 Let them depart, that they may go into the country and towns about, and buy them bread: for they have nothing to eat.
37 But he answered, and said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said unto him, [b]Shall we go, and buy [c]two hundred pennies worth of bread, and give them to eat?
38 (F)Then he said unto them, How many loaves have ye? go and look. And when they knew it, they said, Five, and two fishes.
39 So he commanded them to make them all sit down by [d]companies upon the green grass.
40 Then they sat down by [e]rows, by hundreds, and by fifties.
41 And he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looked up to heaven, and gave thanks, and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them, and the two fishes he divided among them all.
42 So they did all eat, and were satisfied.
43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.
44 And they that had eaten, were about five thousand men.
45 ¶ [f]And straightway he caused his disciples to go into the ship, and to go before unto the other side unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people.
46 Then as soon as he had sent [g]them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.
