Psalm 61-62

David wrote this song. Tell the music leader to use stringed instruments.

God will keep me safe[a]

61 God, please hear me when I call to you for help.
    Listen carefully to my prayer.
I will call out to you from far away,
because I am sad and weak.
Lead me to a strong, safe rock
that is higher than I am.
You are the safe place where I can hide.
You are like a strong tower
that keeps me safe against my enemies.[b]
I want to live in your house for ever.
I want you to keep me safe,
like birds protect their babies under their wings.
Selah.
You, God, have heard my promises to you.
You have blessed me,
as you bless all those people who serve you.
Please give the king a long life.
Let him live to see many descendants.
Let him rule for ever
    with your authority.
Cause your faithful love and your truth to keep him safe.[c]
Then I will always praise your name.
Every day I will give to you
the offerings that I have promised.

This is a song that David wrote for the music leader, Jeduthun.

Only God can save me!

62 I will be patient as I wait for God to help me.
He is the only one who can make me safe.
He alone is the strong rock
where I can hide and be safe.
With him, nothing will make me fall.

How long will you all continue to attack me?
I am just one man,
and you want to kill me!
You want to knock me down,
like a weak wall or a fence that is falling down.[d]
You only want to push me off my high place.
You love to tell lies to deceive people.
When you say words to bless people,
you are cursing them in your thoughts.
Selah.
I must be patient as I wait for God to help me.
He is the only one that I can trust for help.
He alone is the strong rock
where I can hide and be safe.
With him, nothing will make me fall.
It is God who has kept me safe,
and he has made me great.
He is the strong place
where I can hide and be safe.
Yes, my friends,
you should always trust in God!
Tell him about all the troubles in your thoughts.
God is our safe place to hide!
Selah.
People are only as light as a breath!
Whoever they are, they are not important.
If you try to weigh them, all together,
they weigh less than a breath of air.[e]
10 Do not cheat people,
or rob them to get money!
That will not give you anything
that you can trust to help you.
Even if you become very rich,
do not think it is important.
11 I have heard God speak his truth
    once, no twice!
God has great strength.
12 And also, my Lord, you have a faithful love.
You pay back to everybody what they should get
for the things that they have done.

Psalm 112

God makes his people strong[a]

112 Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!
When someone respects the Lord with fear,
    God has blessed that person!
He is happy to obey the Lord's commands.
His children will become powerful in the land.
God will bless their descendants who serve him.
His family will have valuable things,
    and they will be rich.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
God's light shines on those who serve him,
even when they are in a dark place.
God blesses those who are kind to others,
and who do what is right and fair.
People who are kind and lend money to others,
and who work in an honest way,
    will enjoy a good life.
Righteous people will never fail.
    People will always remember them.
They are not afraid to hear bad news.
They are brave,
because they trust in the Lord.
Their thoughts are strong
and they will not be afraid.
They know that they will win against their enemies.
They give their things to help poor people.
People will always remember
the good things that they have done.
They will be powerful
    and people will respect them.
10 When wicked people see this,
    they will be angry.
They will show their teeth in anger,
    but then they will disappear.
Whatever wicked people want,
    they will never get it.

Psalm 115

There is only one true God[a]

115 Lord, you are the one
who deserves that people praise you.
They should praise only you, not us!
Because you love us with a faithful love,
and you always do what you have promised.
Why should other nations say about us,
    ‘Where is their God?’
We know that our God is in heaven.
He does whatever he wants to do.
Those people's idols are made from silver and gold.
    Yes, human hands make them!
Each idol has a mouth,
    but it cannot speak!
It has eyes, but it cannot see!
It has ears, but it cannot hear!
It has a nose, but it cannot smell!
It has hands, but it cannot feel anything!
It has feet, but it cannot walk!
They cannot make a sound!
The people that make those idols
    will become useless like them.
The same is true for everyone
who trusts their idols to help them.
People of Israel,
    trust in the Lord.
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
10 Aaron's family,
    trust in the Lord.[b]
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
11 Everyone who serves the Lord,
    trust in the Lord.
He is the one who helps you
    and keeps you safe.
12 The Lord will remember us,
    and he will bless us.
He will bless Israel's people.
He will bless Aaron's family.
13 He will bless everybody who serves him,
whether they are important people or not.
14 I pray that the Lord will give you many children,
    and your children too!
15 I pray that the Lord will bless you all.
He is the one who made the whole universe.
16 The heavens belong to the Lord,
but he has given the earth to us people.
17 Dead people cannot praise the Lord.
In their graves, they are unable to speak.
18 But we will praise the Lord,
    now and for ever.
Hallelujah! Praise the Lord!

Zephaniah 3:14-20

The Lord will be with his people

14 Sing, you people in Zion. You are my own people, like my own daughter.

Shout, you people in Israel!

Be very, very happy, my people in Jerusalem!

15 The Lord has not punished you as he would have done.

He has sent your enemy away.

I, the King of Israel, am with you!

The bad times have gone.

They will not happen again!

16 On that special day, this will be my message for Jerusalem.

‘Do not be afraid now! Do not be weak now!

17 The Lord, your God, is with you.

He is strong. He will save you.

He will be very happy about you!

He will quietly love you.

He will sing, because he is so happy about you!

18 I will bring together those people among you who want to meet together again.

You want to meet again to pray. And you want to meet again to praise God.

You have had enough cruel words from your enemies.

19 Look! At that time, I will punish

all those people who hurt you.

I will save those who cannot walk well.

I will bring back the people that the enemy has sent away.

I will cause people in every country to know about you. I will cause them to praise you.

20 At that time, I will bring you back to your home.

I will bring you back together.

I will give you a good name among all the people on the earth.

That is what I will do. I will stop your troubles. And you will see it happen.’

That is what the Lord says.

Titus 1

Paul says ‘Hello’ to Titus

This letter is from me, Paul. I am God's servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ. God has sent me to help the people that he has chosen. I teach them to understand his true message and to trust him. As a result they will live in a way that pleases God. They will also be sure that they will live with God for ever. Before the world began, God promised that his people would have life with him. And God never tells lies. God is the one who saves us. Now, at the proper time, he has made his message clear. He has given his message to me so that I can tell it to people. That is what he has told me to do.

I am writing to you, Titus. I told you the message about Jesus and now we both believe in him. So you are like my own child.

I pray that God, the Father, and Christ Jesus, our Saviour, will continue to help you. I pray that they will give you peace in your mind.

Titus's work in Crete

I left you in Crete so that you could finish certain things. You should make right some things that were wrong. And you should choose leaders of the believers in every town, as I told you.

This is what a leader in the church must be like. Nobody should have a reason to say that he has done something wrong. He must be the husband of only one wife. He must have children who respect him. Nobody should say that they enjoy bad things or that they do not obey their parents.[a] A leader in the church serves the believers on God's behalf. Because of that, nobody should have a reason to say that the leader has done anything wrong. A leader must not be proud. He must not become angry easily. He should not like to drink too much wine. He must not be someone who likes to fight. He must not want to get a lot of money for himself. Instead, he must be happy to have visitors in his home. He must want to do good things. He must be careful in how he lives. He must do what is right. He must want to serve God well. He must control himself well.

A leader in the church must continue to believe the true message very well. That is the message which we have taught. Then he will be able to teach people what is true and right. He will also show that people who speak against the true message are wrong.

10 I say this because there are many people who refuse to obey their leaders. They speak about useless things and they deceive people. Many of them want the believers to obey all the Jewish rules.[b] 11 You must stop those people from teaching false things like that. They are causing whole families to believe their lies. They teach things that they should not teach. They deceive people because they want people to give them money. 12 Many years ago, there was a certain man who lived on Crete. The people there called him their prophet. Even he said, ‘People who live on Crete are always telling lies and doing wicked things. They are lazy and they eat too much food.’

13 What that man said is true. So you must warn the people there. Help them to believe the true message about Jesus more and more. 14 They must not listen to Jewish stories that are not true, or to human rules. Those things are the ideas of people who refuse to obey God's true message.

15 If someone is clean and good inside, everything is clean and good for them to enjoy. But if someone is not a believer and has an unclean mind, nothing is clean or good for that person. Their minds no longer think properly. They no longer feel guilty when they do something wrong. 16 People like that say that they know God. But they do disgusting things. This shows that they do not know him. They are completely bad. They refuse to obey God. They are not able to do anything good.

Luke 1:1-25

Luke writes the facts about Jesus

Many people have written about the things that have happened in our country. Some people were present when these things started to happen. They saw everything that happened and they told us about it. They are the people who wrote down the Good News for us. I have checked the facts about what really happened. So now, I know about all the things that happened from the beginning. I am writing to make the facts clear to you, my important friend Theophilus. People have already taught you about these things. Now you can be sure that they are true.

What happened before John the Baptist was born

There was a man whose name was Zechariah. He lived when Herod was king of Judea.[a] Zechariah was a priest and he belonged to a group of priests from the family of Abijah. He had a wife called Elizabeth. She also was from the family of the priest called Aaron.[b]

Zechariah and Elizabeth obeyed God's commands and rules. God saw that they were righteous people. They did not do wrong things. But they had no children. Elizabeth could not give birth and they were both getting old.[c]

One day, Zechariah's group of priests was working at the temple. He had a special job to do there. The priests chose one of their group to go into the holy place in the temple. This time they chose Zechariah.[d] His job was to burn incense there.

10 While Zechariah was burning incense in the special room, many men were outside in the yard.[e] They were praying to God.

11 The incense was burning on a special altar, when one of God's angels appeared to Zechariah. The angel was standing at the right hand side of the altar.[f]

12 When Zechariah saw the angel, he was very surprised and very afraid. 13 The angel said to him, ‘Zechariah, do not be afraid. God has heard what you prayed. He will give you what you asked for. Your wife Elizabeth will give birth to a baby boy. You will give him the name “John”. 14-15 He will be very important to the Lord God. So he will make you very happy. Many other people will also be very happy because he has been born. He must never drink anything with alcohol in it. From the time that he is born, the Holy Spirit will live inside him.

16 He will teach many people in Israel.[g] Then they will turn their lives back to the Lord their God and they will obey God again. 17 John will prepare the people for the Lord to come to them. The Holy Spirit will lead John as he led Elijah.[h] John will do powerful things as Elijah did. He will help fathers to love their children. He will teach people who do not obey God. Then they will know what things are right. And they will do them. Then they will be ready when the Lord comes.’

18 Zechariah asked the angel, ‘How can I be sure about this? You know that I am an old man. My wife is also old.’

19 The angel answered, ‘I am called Gabriel. My place is to stand in front of God. I am always ready to work for God. He has sent me to speak to you. He told me that I should tell you this good news. 20 Now listen to me. Because you did not believe my message, you will not be able to speak. You will not speak again until the time that your son is born. My message will really become true at the right time.’

21 While this was happening, the people outside were waiting for Zechariah. They were thinking, ‘Why has Zechariah stayed for such a long time in the special room? Why has he not come out yet?’ 22 When he did come out, he tried to talk to them. But he could not speak. So they knew that God had showed him something special in the room. He was moving his head and his hands about, to tell them what had happened. But still he could not speak.

23 When Zechariah had finished his work in the temple, he returned home. 24 Soon, a baby was growing inside his wife Elizabeth. She stayed in her house for five months. 25 ‘The Lord has now given me a baby,’ she said. ‘He has been kind to me. Because of this, other people cannot say bad things about me now.’
