Book of Common Prayer
33 He turns the floods to a wilderness, the springs of waters into dryness,
34 a fruitful land into barrenness, because of the wickedness of those who dwell therein.
35 He turns the wilderness into pools of water, and the dry land into water springs.
36 And there He places the hungry; and they build a city in which to dwell,
37 and sow the fields, and plant vineyards, which bring forth fruitful increase.
38 For He blesses them, and they multiply exceedingly; and He does not diminish their cattle.
39 Again, they are diminished and brought low by oppression, evil and sorrow.
40 He pours contempt upon princes and causes them to err in desert places, out of the way.
41 Yet he raises up the poor out of misery and makes families, like a flock of sheep.
42 The righteous shall see it and rejoice; and all iniquity shall stop her mouth.
43 Who is wise? Let him observe these things and understand the lovingkindness of the LORD.
108 O God, my heart is prepared. I will sing and give abundant praise!
2 Awake, viol and harp! I will awake early.
3 I will praise You, O LORD, among the people! And I will sing to You among the nations.
4 For Your mercy is great above the heavens, and Your truth to the clouds.
5 Exalt Yourself, O God, above the heavens, and Your Glory upon all the Earth,
6 so that Your beloved may be delivered. Help with Your right hand and hear me.
7 God has spoken in His holiness, “I will rejoice. I shall divide Shechem and measure the valley of Succoth.
8 “Gilead shall be Mine. Manasseh shall be Mine. Ephraim, also, shall be the strength of My head. Judah is My lawgiver.
9 “Moab shall be My washpot. I will cast out My shoe over Edom. I will triumph over Palestine.”
10 Who will lead me into the strong city? Who will bring me to Edom?
11 Will not You, O God, Who had forsaken us? And will You not go forth, O God, with our armies?
12 Give us help against trouble, for vain is the help of man.
13 Through God we shall do valiantly; for He shall tread down our enemies. To him who excels: A Psalm of David
33 Rejoice in the LORD, O righteous! It becomes upright men to be thankful.
2 Praise the LORD with harp! Sing to Him with viol and instrument of ten strings!
3 Sing to Him a new song! Sing cheerfully with a loud voice!
4 For the Word of the LORD is righteous; and all His works are faithful.
5 He loves righteousness and judgment. The Earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.
6 By the Word of the LORD were the heavens made, and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.
7 He gathers the waters of the sea together, as upon a heap, and lays up the depths in His treasures.
8 Let all the Earth fear the LORD. Let all those who dwell in the world, fear Him.
9 For He spoke, and it was done. He commanded, and it stood.
10 The LORD breaks the counsel of the heathen and brings the devices of the people to nothing.
11 The counsel of the LORD shall stand forever, and the thoughts of His heart throughout all ages.
12 Blessed is that nation whose God is the LORD, the people He has chosen for His inheritance.
13 The LORD looks down from Heaven, beholding all the children of men.
14 From the habitation of His dwelling he beholds all those who dwell on the Earth.
15 He fashions their hearts, every one, understanding all their works.
16 The king is not saved by the multitude of an army; nor is the mighty man delivered by great strength.
17 A horse is a vain help and shall not deliver by his great strength.
18 Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those who fear Him, upon those who trust in His mercy
19 to deliver their souls from death and to preserve them in famine.
20 Our soul waits for the LORD. He is our Help and our Shield.
21 Surely, our heart shall rejoice in Him, because we trusted in His Holy Name.
22 Let Your mercy, O LORD, be upon us. As we trusted in You. A Psalm of David, when he changed his behavior before Abimelech; who drove him away and he departed.
21 “This is the Word that the LORD has spoken against him: ‘O virgin daughter of Zion! He has despised you, laughed you to scorn. O daughter of Jerusalem! He has shaken His Head at you.
22 ‘Whom have you railed on? And Whom have you blasphemed? And against Whom have you exalted your voice and lifted up your eyes on high? —against the Holy One of Israel.
23 ‘By your messengers you have railed on the LORD, and said, “By the multitude of my chariots I have come up to the top of the mountains, by the sides of Lebanon, and will cut down their high cedars, their fair fir trees. And I will go into the lodging of his borders, and into the forest of his fruit.
24 “I have dug and drunk the waters of others. And with the plant of my feet I have dried all the rivers of entrenchment.”
25 ‘Have you not heard how in ancient times I made it, and formed it long ago? And should I now bring it to be destroyed, and laid on ruinous heaps, as defensed cities,
26 ‘whose inhabitants have small power, are afraid, and confounded? They are like the grass of the field, and green herb, grass on the house tops, or as corn blasted before it is grown.
27 ‘I know your dwelling, your going out and your coming in, and your fury against Me.
28 ‘And because you rage against Me, and your tumult has come up to My Ears, I will put My hook in your nostrils, and My bridle in your lips, and will bring you back again the same way you came.
29 ‘And this shall be a sign to you. This year, you shall eat such things as grow by themselves, and the next year such as grow without sowing, and the third year you shall sow and reap and plant vineyards and eat their fruits.
30 ‘And the remnant of the House of Judah that has escaped, shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward.
31 ‘For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, and some who shall escape out of Mount Zion. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts shall do this.’
32 “Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: ‘He shall not enter into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shield, nor cast a siege mount against it.
33 ‘He shall return the way he came, and shall not come into this city,’ says the LORD,
34 ‘For I will defend this city to save it for My own sake, and for David My servant’s sake.’”
35 And the same night, the Angel of the LORD went out and struck a hundred eighty-five thousand in the camp of Assyria. So, when they rose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.
36 So Sennacherib, king of Assyria, departed and went his way and returned and dwelt in Nineveh.
10 Moreover, brothers, I do not wish you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,
2 and were all baptized unto Moses, in the cloud, and in the sea.
3 And all ate the same spiritual food.
4 And all drank the same spiritual drink (for they drank of the spiritual Rock that followed them. And the Rock was Christ.)
5 But with many of them God was not pleased. For they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6 Now these things are our examples, to the intent that we should not also lust after evil things as they lusted,
7 nor be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.”
8 Nor let us commit fornication, as some of them committed fornication. And twenty-three thousand fell in one day.
9 Nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted Him, and were destroyed by serpents.
10 Nor murmur, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed by the destroyer.
11 Now all these things came to them for examples, and were written to admonish us, upon whom the ends of the world have come.
12 Therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed, lest he fall.
13 No trial has overtaken you except what is common to man. And God is faithful, Who will not allow you to be tried above that which you are able, but will also give you a means of escape with the trial, that you may be able to bear it.
18 And when Jesus saw great multitudes of people around Him, He commanded them to go over the water.
19 Then, a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Master, I will follow You wherever You go.”
20 But Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the heaven have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest His head.”
21 And another of His disciples said to Him, “Master, let me first go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me. And let the dead bury the dead.”
23 And when He had entered into the ship, His disciples followed Him.
24 And behold, there arose a storm in the sea, so that the ship was covered with waves. But He was asleep.
25 Then His disciples came and woke Him, saying, “Master, save us! We are perishing!”
26 And He said to them, “Why are you fearful? O you of little faith.” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea. And so, there was a great calm.
27 And the men marveled, saying, “What kind of man is this, that both the winds and the sea obey Him?”
