Psalm 75

God Judges the Wicked

For the choir director: “Do Not Destroy.”[a] A psalm of Asaph.(A) A song.

We give thanks to You, God;
we give thanks to You, for Your name is near.
People tell about Your wonderful works.(B)

“When I choose a time,
I will judge fairly.(C)
When the earth and all its inhabitants shake,
I am the One who steadies its pillars.(D)Selah
I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,’
and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn.(E)
Do not lift up your horn against heaven
or speak arrogantly.’”(F)

Exaltation does not come
from the east, the west, or the desert,
for God is the Judge:
He brings down one and exalts another.(G)
For there is a cup in the Lord’s hand,
full of wine blended with spices, and He pours from it.
All the wicked of the earth will drink,
draining it to the dregs.(H)

As for me, I will tell about Him forever;
I will sing praise to the God of Jacob.(I)

10 “I will cut off all the horns of the wicked,(J)
but the horns of the righteous will be lifted up.”(K)

Psalm 76

God, the Powerful Judge

For the choir director: with stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph.(L) A song.

God is known in Judah;
His name is great in Israel.(M)
His tent is in Salem,[b]
His dwelling place in Zion.(N)
There He shatters the bow’s flaming arrows,
the shield, the sword, and the weapons of war.(O)Selah

You are resplendent and majestic
coming down from the mountains of prey.(P)
The brave-hearted have been plundered;
they have slipped into their final sleep.
None of the warriors was able to lift a hand.(Q)
At Your rebuke, God of Jacob,
both chariot and horse lay still.(R)

And You—You are to be feared.[c]
When You are angry,
who can stand before You?(S)
From heaven You pronounced judgment.
The earth feared and grew quiet(T)
when God rose up to judge
and to save all the lowly of the earth.(U)Selah
10 Even human wrath will praise You;
You will clothe Yourself
with their remaining wrath.[d](V)

11 Make and keep your vows
to the Lord your God;(W)
let all who are around Him bring tribute
to the awe-inspiring One.[e](X)
12 He humbles the spirit of leaders;
He is feared by the kings of the earth.(Y)

Psalm 23

Psalm 23

The Good Shepherd

A Davidic psalm.

The Lord is my shepherd;(A)
there is nothing I lack.(B)
He lets me lie down in green pastures;(C)
He leads me beside quiet waters.(D)
He renews my life;
He leads me along the right paths[a]
for His name’s sake.(E)
Even when I go through the darkest valley,[b]
I fear no danger,
for You are with me;(F)
Your rod and Your staff[c]—they comfort me.(G)

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;(H)
my cup overflows.(I)
Only goodness and faithful love will pursue me
all the days of my life,(J)
and I will dwell in[d] the house of the Lord
as long as I live.[e](K)

Psalm 27

Psalm 27

My Stronghold

Davidic.

The Lord is my light and my salvation—
whom should I fear?(A)
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
of whom should I be afraid?(B)
When evildoers came against me to devour my flesh,(C)
my foes and my enemies stumbled and fell.(D)
Though an army deploys against me,
my heart is not afraid;
though a war breaks out against me,
still I am confident.(E)

I have asked one thing from the Lord;
it is what I desire:
to dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,(F)
gazing on the beauty of the Lord(G)
and seeking Him in His temple.(H)
For He will conceal me in His shelter
in the day of adversity;
He will hide me under the cover of His tent;
He will set me high on a rock.(I)
Then my head will be high
above my enemies around me;(J)
I will offer sacrifices in His tent with shouts of joy.(K)
I will sing and make music to the Lord.(L)

Lord, hear my voice when I call;
be gracious to me and answer me.(M)
My heart says this about You,
“You[a] are to seek My face.”
Lord, I will seek Your face.(N)
Do not hide Your face from me;(O)
do not turn Your servant away in anger.(P)
You have been my helper;(Q)
do not leave me or abandon me,
God of my salvation.
10 Even if my father and mother abandon me,
the Lord cares for me.(R)

11 Because of my adversaries,
show me Your way, Lord,
and lead me on a level path.(S)
12 Do not give me over to the will of my foes,
for false witnesses rise up against me,
breathing violence.(T)

13 I am certain that I will see the Lord’s goodness
in the land of the living.(U)
14 Wait for the Lord;
be strong[b] and courageous.(V)
Wait for the Lord.(W)

2 Samuel 5:22-6:11

22 The Philistines came up again and spread out in the Valley of Rephaim. 23 So David inquired of the Lord, and He answered, “Do not make a frontal assault. Circle around behind them and attack them opposite the balsam trees. 24 When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, act decisively, for then the Lord will have marched out ahead of you to attack the camp of the Philistines.”(A) 25 So David did exactly as the Lord commanded him, and he struck down the Philistines all the way from Geba to Gezer.

David Moves the Ark

David again assembled all the choice men in Israel,(B) 30,000. He and all his troops set out(C) to bring the ark of God from Baale-judah.[a] The ark is called by the Name, the name of Yahweh of Hosts who dwells between the cherubim.(D) They set the ark of God on a new cart and transported it from Abinadab’s house, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio,[b] sons of Abinadab, were guiding the cart(E) and brought it with the ark of God from Abinadab’s house on the hill. Ahio walked in front of the ark. David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating before the Lord with all kinds of fir wood instruments,[c] lyres, harps, tambourines, sistrums,[d] and cymbals.(F)

When they came to Nacon’s threshing floor, Uzzah reached out to the ark of God and took hold of it because the oxen had stumbled. Then the Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah,(G) and God struck him dead on the spot for his irreverence,(H) and he died there next to the ark of God. David was angry because of the Lord’s outburst against Uzzah, so he named that place an Outburst Against Uzzah,[e] as it is today. David feared the Lord that day and said, “How can the ark of the Lord ever come to me?” 10 So he was not willing to move the ark of the Lord to the city of David;(I) instead, he took it to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. 11 The ark of the Lord remained in his house three months, and the Lord blessed Obed-edom(J) and his whole family.

Acts 17:16-34

Paul in Athens

16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was troubled within him when he saw that the city was full of idols. 17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with those who worshiped God and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there.(A) 18 Then also, some of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers argued with him. Some said, “What is this pseudo-intellectual[a] trying to say?”

Others replied, “He seems to be a preacher of foreign deities”—because he was telling the good news about Jesus and the Resurrection.[b](B)

19 They took him and brought him to the Areopagus,[c] and said, “May we learn about this new teaching you’re speaking of?(C) 20 For what you say sounds strange to us, and we want to know what these ideas mean.” 21 Now all the Athenians and the foreigners residing there spent their time on nothing else but telling or hearing something new.

The Areopagus Address

22 Then Paul stood in the middle of the Areopagus and said: “Men of Athens! I see that you are extremely religious in every respect. 23 For as I was passing through and observing the objects of your worship, I even found an altar on which was inscribed:

TO AN UNKNOWN GOD.

Therefore, what you worship in ignorance, this I proclaim to you. 24 The God who made the world and everything in it(D)—He is Lord of heaven and earth(E) and does not live in shrines made by hands.(F) 25 Neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything,(G) since He Himself gives everyone life and breath and all things.(H) 26 From one man[d] He has made every nationality to live over the whole earth and has determined their appointed times and the boundaries of where they live.(I) 27 He did this so they might seek God, and perhaps they might reach out and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.(J) 28 For in Him we live and move and exist, as even some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’[e](K) 29 Being God’s offspring then, we shouldn’t think that the divine nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image fashioned by human art and imagination.(L)

30 “Therefore, having overlooked(M) the times of ignorance, God now commands all people everywhere to repent, 31 because He has set a day when He is going to judge the world in righteousness by the Man He has appointed. He has provided proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead.”(N)

32 When they heard about resurrection of the dead, some began to ridicule him. But others said, “We’d like to hear from you again about this.” 33 Then Paul left their presence. 34 However, some men joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.

Mark 8:1-10

Feeding 4,000

In(A) those days there was again a large crowd, and they had nothing to eat. He summoned(B) the disciples(C) and said to them, “I have compassion(D) on the crowd, because they’ve already stayed with Me three days and have nothing to eat. If I send them home hungry,[a] they will collapse on the way,(E) and some of them have come a long distance.”

His disciples answered Him, “Where can anyone get enough bread here in this desolate place to fill(F) these people?”

“How many loaves do you have?” He asked them.

“Seven,” they said. Then He commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground. Taking the seven loaves, He gave thanks, broke(G) the loaves, and kept on giving them to His disciples to set before the people. So they served the loaves to the crowd. They also had a few small fish, and when He had blessed them, He said these were to be served as well. They ate and were filled. Then they collected seven large baskets of leftover pieces. About 4,000 men were there. He dismissed them 10 and immediately got into the boat with His disciples and went to the district of Dalmanutha.[b]
