Psalm 41

David wrote this song for the music leader.

A prayer[a]

41 If someone is kind to poor people,
    God blesses him.
When he is in trouble,
    the Lord rescues him.
The Lord keeps him safe.
    The Lord saves his life!
God causes him to be happy
here in the land where he lives.
The Lord will not put him under the power of his enemies.
The Lord takes care of him
when he is ill in bed.
Whenever he is ill,
you will make him completely well again.

I said, ‘Lord be kind to me
    and forgive me.
I have done wrong things against you,
but please make me well again.’
My enemies say cruel things about me.
They say, ‘Surely he must die soon!
Then everyone will forget about him.’
When they come to see me,
they say that they are my friends.
But they think of ways to make me ashamed.
When they leave,
they tell everyone bad things about me.
All the people who hate me
    insult me to other people.
My enemies make plans to hurt me.
They say, ‘He has a dangerous disease.
He will never get up from his bed.’
Even my special friend has turned against me.
He was someone that I trusted.
I often ate food with him in my home.[b]

10 But you, Lord, please be kind to me.
Raise me up to be well again.
Then I can punish my enemies as they have punished me.[c]
11 They have not won against me,
so I know that you are pleased with me!
12 You continue to help me because I do what is right.
You will let me stay near to you for ever.

13 Let us all praise the Lord,
    who is Israel's great God!
Yes, praise him now and for ever!
Amen! Amen!

Psalm 52

This is a special song that David wrote for the music leader.

It was when Doeg, the man from Edom, went to Saul and told him, ‘David went to the house of Ahimelech, the priest.’

Cruel words[a]

52 Strong man, why are you so proud
about the evil things that you like to do?
Remember that God's faithful love keeps me safe.
Your tongue is like a sharp knife!
You talk about how to hurt other people,
    You speak nothing but lies.
You love to do evil things,
    not good things.
You love to tell lies
    more than the truth.
Selah.
You love to say cruel words.
    You speak to deceive others.
But God will knock you down,
and he will break you into pieces.
He will take you away from your home.
He will remove you from this world where people live.
Selah.
Righteous people will see what has happened,
    and they will be afraid.[b]
Then they will laugh at the wicked person,
    and they will say,
‘Look! This man did not trust God to keep him safe.
Instead, he trusted in his riches.
He thought that he could be cruel,
and that would keep him safe.’
But I am like a strong olive tree
that grows in the house of God.
I will always trust in God's faithful love for his people.
I will always praise you, God,
    for what you have done.
I will trust you to help me,
together with all those who serve you.

Psalm 44

This is a special song that the sons of Korah wrote for the music leader.

God, please help us![a]

44 God, we have heard it for ourselves.
Our ancestors told us
what you did for them a long time ago.
You used your power to chase away the other nations,
so that our ancestors could live in their land.
You punished those nations,
and you helped our ancestors to be free.
Our ancestors did not get the land
by the power of their own swords.
Their own strength did not win the fight.
It was your own power and strength that did it!
You were kind to them because you were their friend.
God, you are my king!
You command that Jacob's descendants
    must win against their enemies.
Because of your power,
we can knock down our enemies.
Because of your strength,
    we can beat them down.
I do not trust in my bow and arrows.
It is not my sword
that has helped me to win the fight.
It is you who rescues us from our enemies.
You bring shame on the people that hate us.
Every day, we praise you, God.
We will always thank you, all the time,
    because you are great!
Selah.
But now you have turned against us.
    You have made us ashamed.
When our armies go out to fight a battle,
you no longer go with us.
10 You make us run away from our enemies.
The people who hate us take from us whatever they like!
11 You have put us under their power,
so that they kill us like sheep for them to eat.
You have sent us away
    to live in foreign countries.
12 You have sold your own people,
    for almost nothing!
They had no value to you.
13 The people who live in countries near us
    do not respect us.
They laugh at us
    and they insult us.
14 The other nations tell jokes about us.
They think that we are nothing.
15 I feel ashamed all the time.
I do not know where to look.
16 This is because my cruel enemies are always insulting me.
All they want is to hurt me.
17 We have not turned away from you,
but all this has happened to us.
We have not turned against the covenant that you made with us.
18 We have continued to serve you
    and obey your commands.
19 But you have broken us in pieces.
You have left us for wild dogs to eat.
You have covered us with the darkness of death.
20 We might have turned against you, our God,
    and worshipped a strange god.
21 But if we had done that,
    you would have discovered it.
You know even our most secret thoughts.
22 But, because we are your people, God,
people try to kill us all the time.
They think that we are like sheep
and we are ready to be killed.

23 Lord, do something!
Why are you sleeping? Wake up!
Do not turn away from us for ever!
24 Why do you turn away from us?
Why do you forget our troubles
and the way that people hurt us?
25 We have fallen down in the dirt.
Our bodies are lying on the ground.
26 Wake up and help us!
Save us, because of your faithful love.

1 Samuel 24

David refuses to kill Saul

24 When Saul had finished fighting against the Philistines, he returned to his home. Someone told him that David was in the desert at En Gedi. So Saul chose 3,000 of the best soldiers in Israel. They went to look for David and his men near Wild Goat Rocks.

Saul came to the place near the road where the shepherds keep their sheep. There was a cave near to this place. Saul went in there to use it as a toilet.

David and his men were hiding at the back of the same cave. David's men said to him, ‘This is the day that the Lord told you about! The Lord said to you, “I will give your enemy to you. Then you can decide what is the right thing to do to him.” ’ So David stood up very quietly. He went and he cut off a small piece of cloth from Saul's coat. Saul did not know what had happened.

After that, David thought that he had done something wrong. He felt sorry that he had cut a piece of cloth from Saul's coat. David said to his men, ‘I ask the Lord to stop me doing anything wrong to my master. The Lord has chosen him to be Israel's king. I must never do anything to hurt him. He is the king that the Lord has chosen.’ David spoke like this to stop his men from attacking Saul.

Then Saul left the cave and he started to travel along the road.

After that, David went out of the cave. He shouted to Saul, ‘My master and my king!’ Saul looked behind him. David went down on his knees with his face on the ground to respect the king. David said to Saul, ‘You should not listen to the people who say, “David wants to hurt you.” 10 You can see that the Lord has kept you safe today when I had a chance to hurt you in the cave. Some of my men wanted me to kill you, but I did not agree. I said, “I will not hurt my master, because the Lord has chosen him to be king.” 11 My father, look at what I have in my hand! It is a small piece of your coat. I cut this off the corner of your coat, but I did not kill you. So you must know that I do not want to do anything bad against you. I have not turned against you. I am not guilty of anything, but you are chasing after me so that you can kill me. 12 The Lord is the judge who will decide which of us is guilty. I pray that he will punish you for what you are doing to me. But I myself will never do anything to hurt you. 13 You know the proverb, “Evil people do evil things.” But I will never try to hurt you. 14 You are Israel's king. So why are you chasing after someone like me? I am less important than a dead dog or a little fly! 15 The Lord will be the judge to decide who is right. I pray that he will see that I am not guilty. I pray that he will save me from your power.’

16 When David stopped speaking, Saul said, ‘Is that really you, David my son?’ Then Saul started to weep loudly. 17 He said to David, ‘You are a better man than I am. You have been kind to me even when I have tried to hurt you. 18 You have shown me today how kind you have been to me. The Lord gave you a chance to hurt me, but you did not kill me. 19 If someone catches his enemy, he does not let him escape. But you have not tried to hurt me today. So I ask that the Lord will bless you in return. 20 I know that you will be the king of Israel one day. The kingdom will be strong when you rule. 21 So promise me in the Lord's name that you will not kill any of my descendants. Please make sure that people do not forget my family's name.’

22 So David made a strong promise to Saul. Then Saul returned to his home. But David and his men went back to the place where they had been hiding.

Acts 13:44-52

44 On the next Jewish day of rest, almost everyone in the town came together to hear the Lord God's message. 45 But when some Jews saw the crowds of people, they became angry. They were very jealous because the people listened to Paul and Barnabas. They said that Paul was teaching wrong things. They also said bad things against him.

46 But Paul and Barnabas were not afraid of them. They said to them, ‘It was right that we first tell you who are Jews the message from God. But now you say that God's message is not true. You have shown that you do not deserve true life with God. So we will leave you now. We will go and tell this message to the Gentiles.

47 The Lord God has also told us to do this. He said:

“I have chosen you to be like a light to the Gentiles.
You must go to people everywhere in the world.
You must tell them how God wants to save them.” ’[a]

48 When the Gentiles there heard this, they were very happy. They thanked God for the message about the Lord Jesus. Many people believed in Jesus. They were the people that God had chosen to have true life with him.

49 Many people in that part of the country heard the message about the Lord Jesus. 50 But the Jewish leaders spoke to the important men in the city. They also spoke to some rich women who worshipped God. The Jewish leaders told them bad things about Paul and Barnabas. So these important people started to speak against Paul and Barnabas. They caused Paul and Barnabas to leave that region. 51 So Paul and Barnabas cleaned the dirt of that place off their feet. This showed that the people in that town had done a bad thing. Paul and Barnabas then travelled to a town called Iconium.

52 The believers in Antioch continued to be very happy. The Holy Spirit completely filled them.

Mark 4:1-20

Jesus tells a story about a farmer's seeds

Again, Jesus began to teach people near the edge of Lake Galilee. A large crowd came together to listen to him. So he went and sat in a boat that was on the water. The crowd of people stayed on the shore. Jesus used stories to teach them many things. He said to them, ‘Listen to me! A farmer went out to plant seeds in his field.[a] While he was throwing the seeds, some of them fell on the path. The birds came and they ate those seeds. Other seeds fell on ground which had many rocks. There was not much soil in that place. The seeds quickly began to grow, because the soil was not deep. But when the sun rose, it burned the young plants. They soon died because they had not grown down well into the soil. Other seeds fell among thorn bushes. Those bushes grew up with the young plants. They stopped the seeds from growing into strong plants. So the plants could not make any new seeds. But some seeds fell on good soil. Good strong plants grew from these seeds. Some plants made 30 new seeds. Some plants made 60 new seeds. And some plants made 100 new seeds.’

Then Jesus said, ‘You have ears, so listen well to what I say!’

Jesus explains to his disciples why he uses stories

10 When Jesus was alone, the 12 apostles and other people who were there asked him about the stories. 11 Jesus replied, ‘God has let you understand how he rules in the lives of his people. But these other people only listen to stories. 12 This is so that:

“They are always looking but they do not see clearly.
They are always listening but they do not understand.”

If they did understand, they would turn to God. Then God would forgive them.’

Jesus explains the story about the seeds

13 Then Jesus answered the people who had asked him about the story. ‘You should understand this story. If you do not understand it, you will not understand any of my stories. 14 The seeds are like the message from God. The farmer is like a person who tells people about that message. 15 Some seeds fell on the path. That is like some people who listen to the message. But then Satan comes and he quickly takes the message away from their minds. 16 Some of the seeds fell on soil with rocks in it. This is also like some people who hear God's message. These people are happy to believe it for a time. 17 But they are like plants that have not grown down well into the soil. So they only believe for a short time. They may have problems. Or because they obey God's message, other people may do bad things to them. When that happens, these people soon stop believing. 18 Some seeds fell among thorn bushes. This is like some other people who hear God's message. 19 But they have many troubles in their minds. They think that more money and other valuable things will make them happy. So they do not let God's message change them. They are like plants that do not grow well and make new seeds. 20 But some seeds fell on good soil. This is like other people who listen to the message from God. They understand the message and they believe it. These people are like good plants that grow well. From one seed, some good plants make 30 new seeds. Other good plants make 60 new seeds, and some good plants make 100 new seeds.’
