A Psalm and Song at the dedication of the house of David.
1 ¶ I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me.
2 O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me.
3 O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from Sheol; thou gavest me life from my descent into the grave.
4 Let his merciful ones sing unto the LORD, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.
5 For his anger endures but a moment; in his will is life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.
6 ¶ And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved.
7 LORD, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong; thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled.
8 I will cry unto thee, O GOD; and unto the Lord will I make supplication.
9 What profit is there in my blood when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise thee? Shall it declare thy truth?
10 Hear, O LORD and have mercy upon me: LORD, be thou my helper.
11 Thou hast turned my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth and girded me with gladness;
12 to the end that I may sing glory unto thee and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.
A Psalm of David, Maschil.
1 ¶ Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD does not impute iniquity and in whose spirit there is no guile.
3 When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long.
4 For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my green growth is turned into the drought of summer. Selah.
5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and I have not hid my iniquity. I said, I will confess (against myself) my rebellions unto the LORD, and thou shalt forgive the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
6 For this shall every one that is merciful pray unto thee in the time when thou may be found; surely in the floods of great waters they shall not come near unto him.
7 ¶ Thou art my hiding place; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. Selah.
8 I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go; I will fix mine eyes upon thee.
9 Be ye not as the horse or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in subjection with bit and bridle, or they will not come near unto thee.
10 There are many sorrows for the wicked; but he that waits in the LORD, mercy shall compass him round about.
11 Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, ye righteous, and shout for joy, all ye that are upright in heart.
To the Overcomer: Maschil, for the sons of Korah.
1 ¶ As the hart pants after the water brooks, so does my soul pant after thee, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and appear before God?
3 My tears have been my food day and night, while they continually say unto me, Where is thy God?
4 I will remember these things; I will pour out my soul in me. When I shall be included in the number; I will go with them to the house of God with voice of joy and praise, dancing in the multitude.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted against me? Wait thou for God, for I shall yet praise him for the wellbeing of his presence.
6 ¶ O my God, my soul is cast down within me; therefore I will remember thee from the land of Jordan, and of the Hermonites, from the mountain of Mizar.
7 Deep calls unto deep at the voice of thy waterspouts; all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me.
8 Yet the LORD will command his mercy in the daytime, and in the night his song shall be with me, and my prayer unto the God of my life.
9 I will say unto God, My rock, why hast thou forgotten me? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
10 It is as death in my bones when my enemies reproach me; while they say daily unto me, Where is thy God?
11 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Wait thou for God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the saving health of my countenance and my God.
1 ¶ Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against those who are not merciful; O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man.
2 For thou art the God of my strength; why dost thou cast me off? Why do I go mourning because of the oppression of the enemy?
3 O send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me; let them bring me unto the mountain of thy holiness and to thy tabernacles.
4 Then I will enter in to the altar of God, unto the God of my exceeding joy; yea, upon the harp will I praise thee, O God my God.
5 Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? Wait for God, for I shall yet praise him, who is the saving health of my countenance and my God.
22 ¶ And David departed from there and escaped to the cave Adullam; {Heb. righteousness or justice of the people} and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.
2 And every one that was in distress and every one that was in debt and all whose souls were bitter gathered themselves unto him, and he became the captain over them, and there were about four hundred men with him.
3 And David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab, and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth and be with you until I know what God will make of me.
4 And he brought them before the king of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the fortress.
5 And the prophet Gad said unto David, do not abide in this fortress; depart, and go into the land of Judah. Then David departed and came into the forest of Hareth.
6 ¶ When Saul heard how David had appeared and the men that were with him (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his slaves were standing about him),
7 then Saul said unto his slaves that stood about him, Hear now, ye sons of Jemini, will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds
8 that all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one that shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me or shows unto me that my son has stirred up my slave against me, to lie in wait against me, as at this day?
9 Then Doeg, the Edomite, who was set over the slaves of Saul, answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob to Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub.
10 And he enquired of the LORD for him and gave him provision and gave him the sword of Goliath, the Philistine.
11 Then the king sent to call Ahimelech, the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob; and they all came to the king.
12 And Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.
13 And Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread and a sword and hast enquired of God for him that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?
14 Then Ahimelech answered the king and said, And who is so faithful among all thy slaves as David, the king’s son-in-law, who goes at thy bidding and is honourable in thy house?
15 Did I begin to enquire of God for him today? Be it far from me; let not the king impute any thing unto his slave nor to all the house of my father, for thy slave knew nothing of all this, less or more.
16 And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou and all thy father’s house.
17 Then the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn and slay the priests of the LORD because their hand also is with David and because they knew when he fled and did not show it to me. But the slaves of the king would not put forth their hands to fall upon the priests of the LORD.
18 Then the king said to Doeg, Turn thou and fall upon the priests. And Doeg, the Edomite, turned and he fell upon the priests and slew on that day eighty-five men that wore a linen ephod.
19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he smote with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings and oxen and asses and sheep with the edge of the sword.
20 ¶ And one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.
21 And Abiathar gave David the news that Saul had slain the LORD’s priests.
22 And David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day when Doeg, the Edomite, was there that he would surely tell Saul. I have given cause before Saul against all the persons of thy father’s house.
23 Abide thou with me; do not fear, for he that seeks my life seeks thy life; it is good that thou shalt be kept with me.
26 Men and brethren, sons of the lineage of Abraham, and whosoever among you fears God, unto you is this word of saving health sent.
27 For those that dwell at Jerusalem and their princes, because they knew him not nor yet the voices of the prophets who are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.
28 And without finding cause of death in him, yet they asked Pilate that he should be slain.
29 And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a sepulchre.
30 But God raised him from the dead,
31 and he was seen many days by those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who until now are his witnesses unto the people.
32 And we declare unto you the gospel of the promise which was made unto the fathers,
33 which God has fulfilled unto us their children, in that he has raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
34 And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said this, I will give you the sure mercies promised to David.
35 Therefore he also says in another place, Thou shalt not suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.
36 For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep and was gathered unto his fathers and saw corruption;
37 but he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
38 Be it known unto you, therefore, men and brethren, that through this one is preached unto you the remission of sins;
39 and in him all that believe are justified from all the things from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.
40 Beware, therefore, lest what is spoken of in the prophets come upon you:
41 Behold, ye despisers, and wonder and perish, for I do a work in your days, a work which ye would in no wise believe, if one should declare it unto you.
42 ¶ And when they were gone out of the synagogue of the Jews, the Gentiles besought that these words might be spoken to them the next sabbath.
43 Now when the synagogue was dismissed, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to remain in the grace of God.
19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him; and they came home.
20 And the multitude came together again, so that they could not so much as eat bread.
21 And when his friends and family heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him; for they said, He is beside himself.
22 ¶ But the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said that he had Beelzebub and that by the prince of the devils he cast out devils.
23 And he called them unto him and said unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?
24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot remain.
25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot remain.
26 And if Satan rises up against himself and is divided, he cannot remain, but has an end.
27 No man can enter into a strong man’s house and spoil his goods except he will first bind the strong man, and then he will spoil his house.
28 Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men and whatever blasphemies with which they shall blaspheme,
29 but whosoever shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit shall never have forgiveness but is obligated to eternal judgment,
30 because they said, He has an unclean spirit.
31 ¶ There came then his brethren and his mother, and, standing without, sent unto him, calling him.
32 The multitude was sitting all around him, and they said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brothers and sisters seek thee without.
33 And he answered them, saying, Who is my mother or my brethren?
34 And looking round about on those who sat about him, he said, Behold my mother and my brethren!
35 For whosoever doeth the will of God, the same is my brother and my sister and my mother.
