Psalm 107:33-108:13

33 The Lord made rivers dry up completely
    and stopped springs from flowing.
34 (A)He made rich soil become a salty wasteland
    because of the wickedness of those who lived there.
35 He changed deserts into pools of water
    and dry land into flowing springs.
36 He let hungry people settle there,
    and they built a city to live in.
37 They sowed the fields and planted grapevines
    and reaped an abundant harvest.
38 He blessed his people, and they had many children;
    he kept their herds of cattle from decreasing.

39 When God's people were defeated and humiliated
    by cruel oppression and suffering,
40 he showed contempt for their oppressors
    and made them wander in trackless deserts.
41 But he rescued the needy from their misery
    and made their families increase like flocks.
42 The righteous see this and are glad,
    but all the wicked are put to silence.

43 May those who are wise think about these things;
    may they consider the Lord's constant love.

A Prayer for Help against Enemies[a] (B)

108 I have complete confidence, O God!
    I will sing and praise you!
Wake up, my soul!
    Wake up, my harp and lyre!
    I will wake up the sun.
I will thank you, O Lord, among the nations.
    I will praise you among the peoples.
Your constant love reaches above the heavens;
    your faithfulness touches the skies.

Show your greatness in the sky, O God,
    and your glory over all the earth.
Save us by your might; answer my prayer,
    so that the people you love may be rescued.

From his sanctuary[b] God has said,
    “In triumph I will divide Shechem
    and distribute Sukkoth Valley to my people.
Gilead is mine, and Manasseh too;
    Ephraim is my helmet
    and Judah my royal scepter.
But I will use Moab as my washbowl,
    and I will throw my sandals on Edom,
    as a sign that I own it.
    I will shout in triumph over the Philistines.”

10 Who, O God, will take me into the fortified city?
    Who will lead me to Edom?
11 Have you really rejected us?
    Aren't you going to march out with our armies?
12 Help us against the enemy;
    human help is worthless.
13 With God on our side we will win;
    he will defeat our enemies.

Psalm 33

A Song of Praise

33 All you that are righteous,
    shout for joy for what the Lord has done;
    praise him, all you that obey him.
Give thanks to the Lord with harps,
    sing to him with stringed instruments.
Sing a new song to him,
    play the harp with skill, and shout for joy!

The words of the Lord are true,
    and all his works are dependable.
The Lord loves what is righteous and just;
    his constant love fills the earth.

The Lord created the heavens by his command,
    the sun, moon, and stars by his spoken word.
He gathered all the seas into one place;
    he shut up the ocean depths in storerooms.

Worship the Lord, all the earth!
    Honor him, all peoples of the world!
When he spoke, the world was created;
    at his command everything appeared.

10 The Lord frustrates the purposes of the nations;
    he keeps them from carrying out their plans.
11 But his plans endure forever;
    his purposes last eternally.
12 Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord;
    happy are the people he has chosen for his own!

13 The Lord looks down from heaven
    and sees all of us humans.
14 From where he rules, he looks down
    on all who live on earth.
15 He forms all their thoughts
    and knows everything they do.

16 (A)A king does not win because of his powerful army;
    a soldier does not triumph because of his strength.
17 War horses are useless for victory;
    their great strength cannot save.

18 The Lord watches over those who obey him,
    those who trust in his constant love.
19 He saves them from death;
    he keeps them alive in times of famine.

20 We put our hope in the Lord;
    he is our protector and our help.
21 We are glad because of him;
    we trust in his holy name.

22 May your constant love be with us, Lord,
    as we put our hope in you.

Jeremiah 23:9-15

Jeremiah's Message about the Prophets

My heart is crushed,
    and I am trembling.
Because of the Lord,
    because of his holy words,
    I am like a man who is drunk,
    someone who has had too much wine.
10 The land is full of people unfaithful to the Lord;
    they live wicked lives and misuse their power.
Because of the Lord's curse the land mourns
    and the pastures are dry.

11 The Lord says,

“The prophets and the priests are godless;
    I have caught them doing evil in the Temple itself.
12 The paths they follow will be slippery and dark;
    I will make them stumble and fall.
I am going to bring disaster on them;
    the time of their punishment is coming.
I, the Lord, have spoken.
13 I have seen the sin of Samaria's prophets:
    they have spoken in the name of Baal
    and have led my people astray.
14 (A)But I have seen the prophets in Jerusalem do even worse:
    they commit adultery and tell lies;
    they help people to do wrong,
    so that no one stops doing what is evil.
To me they are all as bad
    as the people of Sodom and Gomorrah.

15 “So then, this is what I, the Lord Almighty, say about the prophets of Jerusalem:

I will give them bitter plants to eat
    and poison to drink,
because they have spread ungodliness throughout the land.”

Romans 9:1-18

God and His People

I am speaking the truth; I belong to Christ and I do not lie. My conscience, ruled by the Holy Spirit, also assures me that I am not lying when I say how great is my sorrow, how endless the pain in my heart for my people, my own flesh and blood! For their sake I could wish that I myself were under God's curse and separated from Christ. (A)They are God's people; he made them his children and revealed his glory to them; he made his covenants[a] with them and gave them the Law; they have the true worship; they have received God's promises; they are descended from the famous Hebrew ancestors; and Christ, as a human being, belongs to their race. May God, who rules over all, be praised forever![b] Amen.

I am not saying that the promise of God has failed; for not all the people of Israel are the people of God. (B)Nor are all of Abraham's descendants the children of God. God said to Abraham, “It is through Isaac that you will have the descendants I promised you.” This means that the children born in the usual way[c] are not the children of God; instead, the children born as a result of God's promise are regarded as the true descendants. (C)For God's promise was made in these words: “At the right time[d] I will come back, and Sarah will have a son.”

10 And this is not all. For Rebecca's two sons had the same father, our ancestor Isaac. 11-12 (D)But in order that the choice of one son might be completely the result of God's own purpose, God said to her, “The older will serve the younger.” He said this before they were born, before they had done anything either good or bad; so God's choice was based on his call, and not on anything they had done. 13 (E)As the scripture says, “I loved Jacob, but I hated Esau.”

14 Shall we say, then, that God is unjust? Not at all. 15 (F)For he said to Moses, “I will have mercy on anyone I wish; I will take pity on anyone I wish.” 16 So then, everything depends, not on what we humans want or do, but only on God's mercy. 17 (G)For the scripture says to the king of Egypt, “I made you king in order to use you to show my power and to spread my fame over the whole world.” 18 So then, God has mercy on anyone he wishes, and he makes stubborn anyone he wishes.

John 6:60-71

The Words of Eternal Life

60 Many of his followers heard this and said, “This teaching is too hard. Who can listen to it?”

61 Without being told, Jesus knew that they were grumbling about this, so he said to them, “Does this make you want to give up? 62 Suppose, then, that you should see the Son of Man go back up to the place where he was before? 63 (A)What gives life is God's Spirit; human power is of no use at all. The words I have spoken to you bring God's life-giving Spirit. 64 Yet some of you do not believe.” (Jesus knew from the very beginning who were the ones that would not believe and which one would betray him.) 65 And he added, “This is the very reason I told you that no people can come to me unless the Father makes it possible for them to do so.”

66 Because of this, many of Jesus' followers turned back and would not go with him any more. 67 So he asked the twelve disciples, “And you—would you also like to leave?”

68 (B)Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life. 69 And now we believe and know that you are the Holy One who has come from God.”

70 Jesus replied, “I chose the twelve of you, didn't I? Yet one of you is a devil!” 71 He was talking about Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. For Judas, even though he was one of the twelve disciples, was going to betray him.
