Psalm 118

Psalm 118[a]

Hymn of Thanksgiving

I

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,(A)
    his mercy endures forever.
Let Israel say:
    his mercy endures forever.
Let the house of Aaron say,
    his mercy endures forever.
Let those who fear the Lord say,(B)
    his mercy endures forever.

II

In danger I called on the Lord;
    the Lord answered me and set me free.
The Lord is with me; I am not afraid;
    what can mortals do against me?(C)
The Lord is with me as my helper;
    I shall look in triumph on my foes.
Better to take refuge in the Lord(D)
    than to put one’s trust in mortals.
Better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to put one’s trust in princes.

III

10 All the nations surrounded me;
    in the Lord’s name I cut them off.
11 They surrounded me on every side;
    in the Lord’s name I cut them off.
12 They surrounded me like bees;(E)
    they burned up like fire among thorns;
    in the Lord’s name I cut them off.
13 I was hard pressed and falling,
    but the Lord came to my help.(F)
14 The Lord, my strength and might,
    has become my savior.(G)

IV

15 The joyful shout of deliverance
    is heard in the tents of the righteous:
“The Lord’s right hand works valiantly;
16     the Lord’s right hand is raised;
    the Lord’s right hand works valiantly.”
17 I shall not die but live
    and declare the deeds of the Lord.
18 The Lord chastised me harshly,
    but did not hand me over to death.

V

19 Open the gates of righteousness;
    I will enter and thank the Lord.(H)
20 This is the Lord’s own gate,
    through it the righteous enter.
21 I thank you for you answered me;
    you have been my savior.
22 [b]The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.(I)
23 By the Lord has this been done;
    it is wonderful in our eyes.
24 This is the day the Lord has made;
    let us rejoice in it and be glad.
25 Lord, grant salvation![c]
    Lord, grant good fortune!

VI

26 Blessed is he
    who comes in the name of the Lord.(J)
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
27     The Lord is God and has enlightened us.
Join in procession with leafy branches
    up to the horns of the altar.

VII

28 You are my God, I give you thanks;
    my God, I offer you praise.
29 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
    his mercy endures forever.

Psalm 145

Psalm 145[a]

The Greatness and Goodness of God

Praise. Of David.

I will extol you, my God and king;
    I will bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you;
    I will praise your name forever and ever.(A)
Great is the Lord and worthy of much praise,(B)
    whose grandeur is beyond understanding.
One generation praises your deeds to the next
    and proclaims your mighty works.(C)
They speak of the splendor of your majestic glory,
    tell of your wonderful deeds.(D)
They speak of the power of your awesome acts
    and recount your great deeds.(E)
They celebrate your abounding goodness
    and joyfully sing of your justice.
The Lord is gracious and merciful,
    slow to anger and abounding in mercy.(F)
The Lord is good to all,
    compassionate toward all your works.(G)
10 All your works give you thanks, Lord
    and your faithful bless you.(H)
11 They speak of the glory of your reign
    and tell of your mighty works,
12 Making known to the sons of men your mighty acts,
    the majestic glory of your rule.
13 Your reign is a reign for all ages,
    your dominion for all generations.(I)
The Lord is trustworthy in all his words,
    and loving in all his works.
14 The Lord supports all who are falling
    and raises up all who are bowed down.(J)
15 The eyes of all look hopefully to you;
    you give them their food in due season.(K)
16 You open wide your hand
    and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is just in all his ways,
    merciful in all his works.(L)
18 The Lord is near to all who call upon him,
    to all who call upon him in truth.(M)
19 He fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
    he hears their cry and saves them.(N)
20 The Lord watches over all who love him,
    but all the wicked he destroys.(O)
21 My mouth will speak the praises of the Lord;
    all flesh will bless his holy name forever and ever.

Isaiah 66:7-14

Blessings of Prosperity and Consolation

[a]Before she is in labor,
    she gives birth;(A)
Before her pangs come upon her,
    she delivers a male child.
Who ever heard of such a thing,
    or who ever saw the like?
Can a land be brought forth in one day,
    or a nation be born in a single moment?
Yet Zion was scarcely in labor
    when she bore her children.
Shall I bring a mother to the point of birth,
    and yet not let her child be born? says the Lord.
Or shall I who bring to birth
    yet close her womb? says your God.
10 [b]Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her,
    all you who love her;
Rejoice with her in her joy,
    all you who mourn over her—(B)
11 So that you may nurse and be satisfied
    from her consoling breast;
That you may drink with delight
    at her abundant breasts!
12     For thus says the Lord:
I will spread prosperity over her like a river,
    like an overflowing torrent,
    the wealth of nations.
You shall nurse, carried in her arms,
    cradled upon her knees;
13 As a mother comforts her child,
    so I will comfort you;
    in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.(C)
14 You will see and your heart shall exult,
    and your bodies shall flourish like the grass;
The Lord’s power shall be revealed to his servants,
    but to his enemies, his wrath.

1 John 3:4-10

Avoiding Sin. Everyone who commits sin commits lawlessness, for sin is lawlessness.[a] You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.(A) No one who remains in him sins; no one who sins has seen him or known him. Children, let no one deceive you. The person who acts in righteousness is righteous, just as he is righteous. Whoever sins belongs to the devil, because the devil has sinned from the beginning. Indeed, the Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil.(B) No one who is begotten by God commits sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot sin because he is begotten by God.[b] 10 In this way, the children of God and the children of the devil are made plain; no one who fails to act in righteousness belongs to God, nor anyone who does not love his brother.

John 10:7-16

[a]So Jesus said again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, I am the gate for the sheep. [b]All who came [before me] are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10 A thief comes only to steal and slaughter and destroy; I came so that they might have life and have it more abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.(A) 12 A hired man, who is not a shepherd and whose sheep are not his own, sees a wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away, and the wolf catches and scatters them.(B) 13 This is because he works for pay and has no concern for the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.(C) 16 I have other sheep[c] that do not belong to this fold. These also I must lead, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.(D)
