Book of Common Prayer
His Steadfast Love Endures Forever
118 (A)Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!
2 (B)Let Israel say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
3 (C)Let the house of Aaron say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
4 (D)Let those who fear the Lord say,
“His steadfast love endures forever.”
5 (E)Out of my distress I (F)called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me (G)free.
6 (H)The Lord is on my side; (I)I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
7 (J)The Lord is on my side as my helper;
I shall (K)look in triumph on those who hate me.
8 (L)It is better to take refuge in the Lord
(M)than to trust in man.
9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord
(N)than to trust in princes.
10 (O)All nations surrounded me;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
11 They surrounded me, surrounded me on every side;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
12 (P)They surrounded me like bees;
they went out like (Q)a fire among thorns;
in the name of the Lord I cut them off!
13 I was (R)pushed hard,[a] so that I was falling,
but the Lord helped me.
14 The Lord is my strength and my song;
(S)he has become my salvation.
15 Glad songs of salvation
are in the tents of the righteous:
(T)“The right hand of the Lord (U)does valiantly,
16 the right hand of the Lord exalts,
the right hand of the Lord (V)does valiantly!”
17 (W)I shall not die, but I shall live,
and (X)recount the deeds of the Lord.
18 The Lord has (Y)disciplined me severely,
but he has not given me over to death.
19 (Z)Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.
20 This is the gate of the Lord;
(AA)the righteous shall enter through it.
21 I thank you that (AB)you have answered me
(AC)and have become my salvation.
22 (AD)The stone that the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone.[b]
23 This is the Lord's doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.
25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!
O Lord, we pray, give us success!
Great Is the Lord
[a] A Song of Praise. Of David.
145 (A)I will extol you, my God and (B)King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
(C)and praise your name forever and ever.
3 (D)Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised,
and his (E)greatness is unsearchable.
4 (F)One generation shall commend your works to another,
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 On (G)the glorious splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.
6 They shall speak of (H)the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall pour forth the fame of your (I)abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
8 The Lord is (J)gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The Lord is (K)good to all,
and his mercy is over all that he has made.
10 (L)All your works shall give thanks to you, O Lord,
and all your (M)saints shall bless you!
11 They shall speak of the glory of your kingdom
and tell of your power,
12 to (N)make known to the children of man your[b] (O)mighty deeds,
and (P)the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
13 (Q)Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom,
and your dominion endures throughout all generations.
[The Lord is faithful in all his words
and kind in all his works.][c]
14 The Lord (R)upholds all who are falling
and (S)raises up all who are bowed down.
15 The eyes of all (T)look to you,
and you give them their food in due season.
16 You (U)open your hand;
you (V)satisfy the desire of every living thing.
17 The Lord is (W)righteous in all his ways
and (X)kind in all his works.
18 The Lord is (Y)near to all who call on him,
to all who call on him (Z)in truth.
19 He (AA)fulfills the desire of those who fear him;
he also (AB)hears their cry and saves them.
20 The Lord (AC)preserves all who love him,
but all the wicked he will destroy.
21 My mouth will speak the praise of the Lord,
and (AD)let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever.
Rejoice with Jerusalem
7 (A)“Before she was in labor
she gave birth;
before her pain came upon her
she delivered a son.
8 Who has heard such a thing?
Who has seen such things?
Shall a land be born in one day?
Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment?
For (B)as soon as Zion was in labor
she brought forth her children.
9 Shall I bring to the point of birth and not cause to bring forth?”
says the Lord;
“shall I, who cause to bring forth, shut the womb?”
says your God.
10 (C)“Rejoice with Jerusalem, and be glad for her,
all you who love her;
rejoice with her in joy,
all you who mourn over her;
11 that you may nurse and be satisfied
from her consoling breast;
that you may drink deeply with delight
from her glorious abundance.”[a]
12 For thus says the Lord:
(D)“Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river,
and the glory of the nations like an overflowing stream;
and (E)you shall nurse, you shall be carried upon her hip,
and bounced upon her knees.
13 As one whom his mother comforts,
so (F)I will comfort you;
you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.
14 You shall see, and your heart shall rejoice;
(G)your bones shall flourish like the grass;
and (H)the hand of the Lord shall be known to his servants,
and he shall show his indignation against his enemies.
4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; (A)sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that (B)he appeared in order to (C)take away sins, and (D)in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; (E)no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7 Little children, (F)let no one deceive you. (G)Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 (H)Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was (I)to destroy the works of the devil. 9 (J)No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God's[a] seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10 By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, (K)nor is the one who (L)does not love his brother.
7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, (A)I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, (B)he will be saved and will go in and out and (C)find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and (D)kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 (E)I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd (F)lays down his life for the sheep. 12 He who is (G)a hired hand and not a shepherd, who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and (H)leaves the sheep and flees, and the wolf snatches them and (I)scatters them. 13 He flees because (J)he is a hired hand and (K)cares nothing for the sheep. 14 (L)I am the good shepherd. (M)I know my own and (N)my own know me, 15 (O)just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and (P)I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And (Q)I have other sheep that are not of this fold. (R)I must bring them also, and (S)they will listen to my voice. So there will be (T)one flock, (U)one shepherd.
