Prayer for Deliverance from Enemies

A song of ascents.[a]

120 In my distress I called to Yahweh,
and he answered me.
“Deliver my life, O Yahweh, from lying lips,
from a deceitful tongue.”
What shall be given to you,[b]
and what more shall be done to you,
deceitful tongue?
The sharpened arrows of a warrior,
with burning charcoals from broom trees.
Woe to me, that I sojourn in Meshech,
that I dwell among the tents of Kedar.
Too long my soul has had its dwelling
near one who hates peace.
I am for peace, but when I speak,
they are for war.

Trust in God’s Protection

A song for the ascents.[c]

121 I lift up my eyes to the mountains;
whence will my help come?
My help is from Yahweh,
maker of heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to be moved;
he who protects you will not slumber.
Look, he will not slumber and he will not sleep—
he who protects Israel.
Yahweh is your protector;
Yahweh is your shade at your right hand.
The sun will not strike you by day,
nor the moon by night.
Yahweh will protect you from all evil;[d]
he will protect your life.
Yahweh will protect your going out and your coming in
from now until forever.

Jerusalem the Site of God’s Presence

A song of ascents. Of David.[e]

122 I rejoiced in those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house[f] of Yahweh.”
Our feet are standing
within your gates, O Jerusalem—
Jerusalem that is built
as a city that is joined together,
where the tribes go up,
the tribes of Yah[g] as a testimony for Israel,
to give thanks to the name of Yahweh.
For there the thrones sit[h] for judgment,
thrones of David’s house.
Pray[i] for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be at ease.
May peace be within your walls,
security within your palaces.”
For the sake of my brothers and my friends,
I will say, “Peace be within you.”
For the sake of the house[j] of Yahweh our God,
I will seek your good.

Prayer for Yahweh’s Action in the Face of Scorn

A song of ascents.[k]

123 I lift up my eyes to you,
the one enthroned[l] in the heavens.
Behold, as the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,[m]
as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to Yahweh our God,
until he is gracious to us.
Be gracious to us, O Yahweh, be gracious to us,
for long enough we have had our fill of contempt.
For long enough our soul has had its fill of
the derision of the self-confident,
the contempt of the arrogant.

Thanksgiving for Yahweh’s Help

A song of ascents. Of David.[n]

124 “If it had not been Yahweh who was on our side,”
do let Israel say,
“If it had not been Yahweh who was on our side,
when men rose up against us,
then they would have swallowed us alive,
when their anger was kindled against us.
Then the waters would have flooded over us,
the torrent would have passed over our soul.
Then over our soul would have passed
the raging waters.”
Blessed be Yahweh,
who has not made[o] us prey for their teeth.
Our soul has escaped like a bird
from the snare of fowlers.
The snare is broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of Yahweh,
maker of heaven and earth.

Confidence in Yahweh’s Protection

A song of ascents.[p]

125 Those who trust in Yahweh
are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved,
but abides forever.
As mountains are round about Jerusalem,
so Yahweh is round about his people,
from now until forever.
For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest
on the land[q] of the righteous,
lest the righteous stretch out
their hands to do wickedness.[r]
Do good, O Yahweh, to the good,
and to those upright in their hearts.
But regarding those who turn aside to their crooked ways,
Yahweh will lead them away with the evildoers.
Peace be upon Israel.

A Prayer for Restoration

A song of ascents.[s]

126 When Yahweh restored the fortunes[t] of Zion,[u]
we were like dreamers.
Then our mouth was filled with laughter,
and our tongue with rejoicing.
Then they said among the nations,
“Yahweh has done great things for these people.”
Yahweh has done great things for us;
we are glad.
Restore, O Yahweh, our fortunes[v]
like the streams in the Negeb.[w]
Those who sow with tears
shall reap with rejoicing.
He who diligently goes out with weeping,
carrying the seed bag,
shall certainly come in with rejoicing,
carrying his sheaves.

A Prayer for Protection and Prosperity

A song of ascents. Of Solomon.[x]

127 Unless Yahweh builds a house,
its builders labor at it in vain.
Unless Yahweh guards a city,
a guard watches in vain.
It is in vain for you who rise early and sit late,
eating the bread of anxious toil,
when thus he[y] provides[z] for his beloved in his sleep.[aa]
Look, children[ab] are the heritage[ac] of Yahweh;
the fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
so are the children[ad] of one’s youth.
Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them.[ae]
They shall not be put to shame
when they speak with enemies at the gate.

Ezekiel 33:21-33

21 And then[a] it was in the twelfth[b] year, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month of our exile, a survivor from Jerusalem came to me, saying,[c] “The city was destroyed!” 22 And the hand of Yahweh was on me on the evening before[d] the coming of the survivor, and he opened my mouth before the survivor came to me in the morning,[e] and my mouth was opened, and I was no longer[f] dumb.[g] 23 And the word of Yahweh came[h] to me, saying,[i] 24 “Son of man,[j] the inhabitants of these ruins on the soil of Israel are saying, ‘Abraham was one man, and he took possession of the land, and we are many; the land has been given for[k] us as a possession.’ 25 Therefore say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “You eat blood in your meat, and you raise your eyes to your idols and you pour out blood, and yet you want to take possession of the land?[l] 26 You rely on your sword, you do a detestable thing, and each man defiles[m] the wife of his neighbor, and yet you want to take possession of the land?”’[n]

27 “Thus you must say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord Yahweh: “As I live,[o] surely[p] whoever is in the ruins, by the sword they will fall, and whoever is on the surface of the open field, I will give him to the animals[q] to eat him, and whoever is in the stronghold and in the cave, they will die by the plague. 28 And I will make the land a desolation and a wasteland, and the pride of its strength will come to an end, and the mountains of Israel will be desolate with no one traveling through them.”’[r] 29 And they will know that I am Yahweh when I make my land a desolation and a wasteland, because of all of their detestable things that they have done.

30 “And you, son of man,[s] your people,[t] the ones talking together concerning you beside the walls and in the doorways of the houses, each one with his brother saying,[u] ‘Please come and hear what is the word that is going out from Yahweh.’[v] 31 And they come to you as people do,[w] and they sit before you,[x] and my people hear your words, and they do not do them, for they are showing[y] passion in their mouth, but their heart is going after ill-gotten gain. 32 Now, look! You are to them like a sensual song,[z] beautiful of voice and played well on an instrument,[aa] and they hear your words, but they are not doing them.[ab] 33 So[ac] when it comes,[ad] look! It is coming! And then they will know that a prophet was in the midst of them.”

1 John 2:1-11

Keeping the New Commandment

My little children, I am writing these things to you in order that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one, and he[a] is the propitiation[b] for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world. And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. The one who says “I have come to know him,” and does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in this person. But whoever keeps his word, truly in this person the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in him. The one who says that he resides in him ought also to walk[c] just as that one walked.

Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the message which you have heard. Again, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in him and in you, because[d] the darkness is passing away and the true light already is shining. The one who says he is in the light and hates his brother is in the darkness until now. 10 The one who loves his brother resides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But the one who hates his brother is in the darkness, and walks in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Matthew 9:35-10:4

A Plentiful Harvest But Few Workers

35 And Jesus was going around all the towns and the villages, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every[a] disease and every[b] sickness. 36 And when he[c] saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were weary and dejected, like sheep that did not have a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. 38 Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest that he send out workers into his harvest.”

The Twelve Commissioned and Sent Out

10 And summoning his twelve disciples, he gave them authority over unclean spirits, so that they could expel them[d] and could heal every[e] disease and every[f] sickness. Now these are the names of the twelve apostles: first Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, James[g] the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, Philip, and Bartholomew, Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector, James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot,[h] and Judas Iscariot—the one who also betrayed him.
