  42. If it is torn by beasts, let him bring it as evidence. He shall not make restitution for what has been torn.
  43. “If a man borrows anything of his neighbor, and it is injured or dies, the owner not being with it, he shall make full restitution.
  44. for that is his only covering, and it is his cloak for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.
  45. And the poles shall be put through the rings, so that the poles are on the two sides of the altar when it is carried.
  46. But the flesh of the bull and its skin and its dung you shall burn with fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering.
  47. and burn the whole ram on the altar. It is a burnt offering to the Lord. It is a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the Lord.
  48. “You shall also take the fat from the ram and the fat tail and the fat that covers the entrails, and the long lobe of the liver and the two kidneys with the fat that is on them, and the right thigh (for it is a ram of ordination),
  49. Then you shall take them from their hands and burn them on the altar on top of the burnt offering, as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. It is a food offering to the Lord.
  50. It shall be for Aaron and his sons as a perpetual due from the people of Israel, for it is a contribution. It shall be a contribution from the people of Israel from their peace offerings, their contribution to the Lord.
  51. And if any of the flesh for the ordination or of the bread remain until the morning, then you shall burn the remainder with fire. It shall not be eaten, because it is holy.
  52. Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year. With the blood of the sin offering of atonement he shall make atonement for it once in the year throughout your generations. It is most holy to the Lord.”

  57. But he said, “It is not the sound of shouting for victory, or the sound of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing that I hear.”

    And he said, “Behold, I am making a covenant. Before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been created in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people among whom you are shall see the work of the Lord, for it is an awesome thing that I will do with you.
  60. but the entrails and the legs he shall wash with water. And the priest shall offer all of it and burn it on the altar; it is a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
  61. He shall tear it open by its wings, but shall not sever it completely. And the priest shall burn it on the altar, on the wood that is on the fire. It is a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
  62. But the rest of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the Lord's food offerings.
  63. You shall break it in pieces and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering.
  64. And you shall bring the grain offering that is made of these things to the Lord, and when it is presented to the priest, he shall bring it to the altar.
  65. But the rest of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the Lord's food offerings.

  67. And the priest shall burn as its memorial portion some of the crushed grain and some of the oil with all of its frankincense; it is a food offering to the Lord.
  68. Then Aaron's sons shall burn it on the altar on top of the burnt offering, which is on the wood on the fire; it is a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.
  69. if it is the anointed priest who sins, thus bringing guilt on the people, then he shall offer for the sin that he has committed a bull from the herd without blemish to the Lord for a sin offering.
  70. And he shall carry the bull outside the camp and burn it up as he burned the first bull; it is the sin offering for the assembly.
  71. and shall lay his hand on the head of the goat and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt offering before the Lord; it is a sin offering.
  72. or if anyone touches an unclean thing, whether a carcass of an unclean wild animal or a carcass of unclean livestock or a carcass of unclean swarming things, and it is hidden from him and he has become unclean, and he realizes his guilt;
  73. or if he touches human uncleanness, of whatever sort the uncleanness may be with which one becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it, and realizes his guilt;
  74. or if anyone utters with his lips a rash oath to do evil or to do good, any sort of rash oath that people swear, and it is hidden from him, when he comes to know it, and he realizes his guilt in any of these;
  75. and he shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, while the rest of the blood shall be drained out at the base of the altar; it is a sin offering.
  76. “But if he cannot afford two turtledoves or two pigeons, then he shall bring as his offering for the sin that he has committed a tenth of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering. He shall put no oil on it and shall put no frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering.
  77. And he shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take a handful of it as its memorial portion and burn this on the altar, on the Lord's food offerings; it is a sin offering.
  78. It is a guilt offering; he has indeed incurred guilt before the Lord.”
  79. It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of my food offerings. It is a thing most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering.
  80. “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering. In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the Lord; it is most holy.
  81. And the earthenware vessel in which it is boiled shall be broken. But if it is boiled in a bronze vessel, that shall be scoured and rinsed in water.
  82. Every male among the priests may eat of it; it is most holy.
  83. “This is the law of the guilt offering. It is most holy.
  84. The priest shall burn them on the altar as a food offering to the Lord; it is a guilt offering.
  85. Every male among the priests may eat of it. It shall be eaten in a holy place. It is most holy.
  86. If any of the flesh of the sacrifice of his peace offering is eaten on the third day, he who offers it shall not be accepted, neither shall it be credited to him. It is tainted, and he who eats of it shall bear his iniquity.
  87. The Lord commanded this to be given them by the people of Israel, from the day that he anointed them. It is a perpetual due throughout their generations.”
  88. Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar, his surviving sons: “Take the grain offering that is left of the Lord's food offerings, and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy.
  89. You shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your due and your sons' due, from the Lord's food offerings, for so I am commanded.
  90. “Why have you not eaten the sin offering in the place of the sanctuary, since it is a thing most holy and has been given to you that you may bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord?
  91. And anything on which any of them falls when they are dead shall be unclean, whether it is an article of wood or a garment or a skin or a sack, any article that is used for any purpose. It must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; then it shall be clean.
  92. And if any part of their carcass falls upon any seed grain that is to be sown, it is clean,
  93. but if water is put on the seed and any part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.
  94. and the priest shall examine the diseased area on the skin of his body. And if the hair in the diseased area has turned white and the disease appears to be deeper than the skin of his body, it is a case of leprous disease. When the priest has examined him, he shall pronounce him unclean.
  95. And the priest shall examine him again on the seventh day, and if the diseased area has faded and the disease has not spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is only an eruption. And he shall wash his clothes and be clean.
  96. And the priest shall look, and if the eruption has spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a leprous disease.
  97. it is a chronic leprous disease in the skin of his body, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. He shall not shut him up, for he is unclean.
  98. And the priest shall examine the raw flesh and pronounce him unclean. Raw flesh is unclean, for it is a leprous disease.
  99. And the priest shall look, and if it appears deeper than the skin and its hair has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a case of leprous disease that has broken out in the boil.
  100. But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in it and it is not deeper than the skin, but has faded, then the priest shall shut him up seven days.
  101. And if it spreads in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a disease.
  102. But if the spot remains in one place and does not spread, it is the scar of the boil, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.
  103. the priest shall examine it, and if the hair in the spot has turned white and it appears deeper than the skin, then it is a leprous disease. It has broken out in the burn, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a case of leprous disease.
  104. But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the spot and it is no deeper than the skin, but has faded, the priest shall shut him up seven days,
  105. and the priest shall examine him the seventh day. If it is spreading in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a case of leprous disease.
  106. But if the spot remains in one place and does not spread in the skin, but has faded, it is a swelling from the burn, and the priest shall pronounce him clean, for it is the scar of the burn.
  107. the priest shall examine the disease. And if it appears deeper than the skin, and the hair in it is yellow and thin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is an itch, a leprous disease of the head or the beard.
  108. the priest shall look, and if the spots on the skin of the body are of a dull white, it is leukoderma that has broken out in the skin; he is clean.
  109. But if there is on the bald head or the bald forehead a reddish-white diseased area, it is a leprous disease breaking out on his bald head or his bald forehead.
  110. if the disease is greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin or in the warp or the woof or in any article made of skin, it is a case of leprous disease, and it shall be shown to the priest.
  111. Then he shall examine the disease on the seventh day. If the disease has spread in the garment, in the warp or the woof, or in the skin, whatever be the use of the skin, the disease is a persistent leprous disease; it is unclean.
  112. And he shall burn the garment, or the warp or the woof, the wool or the linen, or any article made of skin that is diseased, for it is a persistent leprous disease. It shall be burned in the fire.
  113. And the priest shall examine the diseased thing after it has been washed. And if the appearance of the diseased area has not changed, though the disease has not spread, it is unclean. You shall burn it in the fire, whether the rot is on the back or on the front.
  114. Then if it appears again in the garment, in the warp or the woof, or in any article made of skin, it is spreading. You shall burn with fire whatever has the disease.
  115. This is the law for a case of leprous disease in a garment of wool or linen, either in the warp or the woof, or in any article made of skin, to determine whether it is clean or unclean.
  116. And he shall kill the lamb in the place where they kill the sin offering and the burnt offering, in the place of the sanctuary. For the guilt offering, like the sin offering, belongs to the priest; it is most holy.
  117. then the priest shall go and look. And if the disease has spread in the house, it is a persistent leprous disease in the house; it is unclean.
  118. Moreover, whoever enters the house while it is shut up shall be unclean until the evening,
  119. to show when it is unclean and when it is clean. This is the law for leprous disease.
  120. And this is the law of his uncleanness for a discharge: whether his body runs with his discharge, or his body is blocked up by his discharge, it is his uncleanness.
  121. Whether it is the bed or anything on which she sits, when he touches it he shall be unclean until the evening.
  122. It is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict yourselves; it is a statute forever.
  123. For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life.

He has uncovered his sister's nakedness, and he shall bear his iniquity.
  132. If a man takes his brother's wife, it is impurity. He has uncovered his brother's nakedness; they shall be childless.
  133. if it is to be accepted for you it shall be a male without blemish, of the bulls or the sheep or the goats.
  134. The Sabbath

    “Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the Lord in all your dwelling places.
  135. And you shall eat neither bread nor grain parched or fresh until this same day, until you have brought the offering of your God: it is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
  136. And you shall make a proclamation on the same day. You shall hold a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a statute forever in all your dwelling places throughout your generations.
  137. And you shall not do any work on that very day, for it is a Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God.
  138. You shall not do any work. It is a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwelling places.
  139. For seven days you shall present food offerings to the Lord. On the eighth day you shall hold a holy convocation and present a food offering to the Lord. It is a solemn assembly; you shall not do any ordinary work.
  140. You shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord for seven days in the year. It is a statute forever throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month.
  141. Every Sabbath day Aaron shall arrange it before the Lord regularly; it is from the people of Israel as a covenant forever.
  142. And it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place, since it is for him a most holy portion out of the Lord's food offerings, a perpetual due.”
  143. For it is a jubilee. It shall be holy to you. You may eat the produce of the field.
  144. If the years are many, you shall increase the price, and if the years are few, you shall reduce the price, for it is the number of the crops that he is selling to you.
  145. If it is not redeemed within a full year, then the house in the walled city shall belong in perpetuity to the buyer, throughout his generations; it shall not be released in the jubilee.
  146. For it is to me that the people of Israel are servants. They are my servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.
  147. And if it is any unclean animal that may not be offered as an offering to the Lord, then he shall stand the animal before the priest,
  148. But the field, when it is released in the jubilee, shall be a holy gift to the Lord, like a field that has been devoted. The priest shall be in possession of it.
  149. “But a firstborn of animals, which as a firstborn belongs to the Lord, no man may dedicate; whether ox or sheep, it is the Lord's.
  150. And if it is an unclean animal, then he shall buy it back at the valuation, and add a fifth to it; or, if it is not redeemed, it shall be sold at the valuation.
  151. “Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord's; it is holy to the Lord.
  152. And they shall take a cloth of blue and cover the lampstand for the light, with its lamps, its tongs, its trays, and all the vessels for oil with which it is supplied.
  153. if a man lies with her sexually, and it is hidden from the eyes of her husband, and she is undetected though she has defiled herself, and there is no witness against her, since she was not taken in the act,
  154. then the man shall bring his wife to the priest and bring the offering required of her, a tenth of an ephah of barley flour. He shall pour no oil on it and put no frankincense on it, for it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering of remembrance, bringing iniquity to remembrance.
  155. And the priest shall take the shoulder of the ram, when it is boiled, and one unleavened loaf out of the basket and one unleavened wafer, and shall put them on the hands of the Nazirite, after he has shaved the hair of his consecration,
  156. It is because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to give to them that he has killed them in the wilderness.’
  157. Therefore it is against the Lord that you and all your company have gathered together. What is Aaron that you grumble against him?”
  158. In a most holy place shall you eat it. Every male may eat it; it is holy to you.
  159. All the holy contributions that the people of Israel present to the Lord I give to you, and to your sons and daughters with you, as a perpetual due. It is a covenant of salt forever before the Lord for you and for your offspring with you.”
  160. And you may eat it in any place, you and your households, for it is your reward in return for your service in the tent of meeting.
  161. And a man who is clean shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and deposit them outside the camp in a clean place. And they shall be kept for the water for impurity for the congregation of the people of Israel; it is a sin offering.
  162. And every open vessel that has no cover fastened on it is unclean.
  163. And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place? It is no place for grain or figs or vines or pomegranates, and there is no water to drink.”
  164. Therefore it is said in the Book of the Wars of the Lord, “Waheb in Suphah, and the valleys of the Arnon,
  165. Then Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned, for I did not know that you stood in the road against me. Now therefore, if it is evil in your sight, I will turn back.”
  166. It is a regular burnt offering, which was ordained at Mount Sinai for a pleasing aroma, a food offering to the Lord.

    “On the first day of the seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall not do any ordinary work. It is a day for you to blow the trumpets,
  168. It is eleven days' journey from Horeb by the way of Mount Seir to Kadesh-barnea.
  169. And they took in their hands some of the fruit of the land and brought it down to us, and brought us word again and said, ‘It is a good land that the Lord our God is giving us.’
  170. (It is also counted as a land of Rephaim. Rephaim formerly lived there—but the Ammonites call them Zamzummim—
  171. Jair the Manassite took all the region of Argob, that is, Bashan, as far as the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called the villages after his own name, Havvoth-jair, as it is to this day.)

  186. Atonement for Unsolved Murders

    “If in the land that the Lord your God is giving you to possess someone is found slain, lying in the open country, and it is not known who killed him,
  187. “You shall not muzzle an ox when it is treading out the grain.
  188. It is not with you alone that I am making this sworn covenant,
  189. Then people will say, ‘It is because they abandoned the covenant of the Lord, the God of their fathers, which he made with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt,
  190. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend to heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’
  191. But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.
  192. Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
  193. It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.”
  194. For it is no empty word for you, but your very life, and by this word you shall live long in the land that you are going over the Jordan to possess.”
  195. So Joshua burned Ai and made it forever a heap of ruins, as it is to this day.
  196. just as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the people of Israel, as it is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, “an altar of uncut stones, upon which no man has wielded an iron tool.” And they offered on it burnt offerings to the Lord and sacrificed peace offerings.
  197. Here is our bread. It was still warm when we took it from our houses as our food for the journey on the day we set out to come to you, but now, behold, it is dry and crumbly.
  198. (from the Shihor, which is east of Egypt, northward to the boundary of Ekron, it is counted as Canaanite; there are five rulers of the Philistines, those of Gaza, Ashdod, Ashkelon, Gath, and Ekron), and those of the Avvim,
  199. but the hill country shall be yours, for though it is a forest, you shall clear it and possess it to its farthest borders. For you shall drive out the Canaanites, though they have chariots of iron, and though they are strong.”
  200. The people of Reuben and the people of Gad called the altar Witness, “For,” they said, “it is a witness between us that the Lord is God.”
  201. And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you.
  202. One man of you puts to flight a thousand, since it is the Lord your God who fights for you, just as he promised you.
  203. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
  204. for it is the Lord our God who brought us and our fathers up from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, and who did those great signs in our sight and preserved us in all the way that we went, and among all the peoples through whom we passed.
  205. And he said to him, “If now I have found favor in your eyes, then show me a sign that it is you who speak with me.
  206. behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.”
  207. And the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?”
  208. And Samson said to them, “Let me now put a riddle to you. If you can tell me what it is, within the seven days of the feast, and find it out, then I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes,
  209. but if you cannot tell me what it is, then you shall give me thirty linen garments and thirty changes of clothes.” And they said to him, “Put your riddle, that we may hear it.”
  210. And Samson's wife wept over him and said, “You only hate me; you do not love me. You have put a riddle to my people, and you have not told me what it is.” And he said to her, “Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother, and shall I tell you?”
  211. And God split open the hollow place that is at Lehi, and water came out from it. And when he drank, his spirit returned, and he revived. Therefore the name of it was called En-hakkore; it is at Lehi to this day.
  212. They said, “Arise, and let us go up against them, for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good. And will you do nothing? Do not be slow to go, to enter in and possess the land.
  213. and went up and encamped at Kiriath-jearim in Judah. On this account that place is called Mahaneh-dan to this day; behold, it is west of Kiriath-jearim.
  214. would you therefore wait till they were grown? Would you therefore refrain from marrying? No, my daughters, for it is exceedingly bitter to me for your sake that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me.”
  215. And Naomi said to Ruth, her daughter-in-law, “It is good, my daughter, that you go out with his young women, lest in another field you be assaulted.”
  216. And now it is true that I am a redeemer. Yet there is a redeemer nearer than I.
  217. No, my sons; it is no good report that I hear the people of the Lord spreading abroad.
  218. So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the Lord. Let him do what seems good to him.”
  219. and watch. If it goes up on the way to its own land, to Beth-shemesh, then it is he who has done us this great harm, but if not, then we shall know that it is not his hand that struck us; it happened to us by coincidence.”
  220. When Samuel saw Saul, the Lord told him, “Here is the man of whom I spoke to you! He it is who shall restrain my people.”
  221. Saul's Rash Vow

    And the men of Israel had been hard pressed that day, so Saul had laid an oath on the people, saying, “Cursed be the man who eats food until it is evening and I am avenged on my enemies.” So none of the people had tasted food.
  222. And he too stripped off his clothes, and he too prophesied before Samuel and lay naked all that day and all that night. Thus it is said, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”
  223. And he said to him, “Far from it! You shall not die. Behold, my father does nothing either great or small without disclosing it to me. And why should my father hide this from me? It is not so.”
  224. And behold, I will send the boy, saying, ‘Go, find the arrows.’ If I say to the boy, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you, take them,’ then you are to come, for, as the Lord lives, it is safe for you and there is no danger.
  225. And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?”
  226. So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.
  227. And the priest said, “The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck down in the Valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod. If you will take that, take it, for there is none but that here.” And David said, “There is none like that; give it to me.”
  228. Go, make yet more sure. Know and see the place where his foot is, and who has seen him there, for it is told me that he is very cunning.
  229. Saul recognized David's voice and said, “Is this your voice, my son David?” And David said, “It is my voice, my lord, O king.”
  230. Now therefore let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If it is the Lord who has stirred you up against me, may he accept an offering, but if it is men, may they be cursed before the Lord, for they have driven me out this day that I should have no share in the heritage of the Lord, saying, ‘Go, serve other gods.’
  231. and he said it should be taught to the people of Judah; behold, it is written in the Book of Jashar. He said:
  232. Then Abner looked behind him and said, “Is it you, Asahel?” And he answered, “It is I.”
  233. And David said on that day, “Whoever would strike the Jebusites, let him get up the water shaft to attack ‘the lame and the blind,’ who are hated by David's soul.” Therefore it is said, “The blind and the lame shall not come into the house.”
  234. But the men said, “You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore it is better that you send us help from the city.”
  235. Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself the pillar that is in the King's Valley, for he said, “I have no son to keep my name in remembrance.” He called the pillar after his own name, and it is called Absalom's monument to this day.
  236. The Gibeonites said to him, “It is not a matter of silver or gold between us and Saul or his house; neither is it for us to put any man to death in Israel.” And he said, “What do you say that I shall do for you?”
  237. And when the angel stretched out his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the Lord relented from the calamity and said to the angel who was working destruction among the people, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was by the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.
  238. and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his testimonies, as it is written in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you do and wherever you turn,
  239. And when the prophet who had brought him back from the way heard of it, he said, “It is the man of God who disobeyed the word of the Lord; therefore the Lord has given him to the lion, which has torn him and killed him, according to the word that the Lord spoke to him.”
  240. therefore behold, I will bring harm upon the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam every male, both bond and free in Israel, and will burn up the house of Jeroboam, as a man burns up dung until it is all gone.
  241. And he answered him, “It is I. Go, tell your lord, ‘Behold, Elijah is here.’”
  242. And you call upon the name of your god, and I will call upon the name of the Lord, and the God who answers by fire, he is God.” And all the people answered, “It is well spoken.”
  243. But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
  244. And after this Ahab said to Naboth, “Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near my house, and I will give you a better vineyard for it; or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its value in money.”
  245. And when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, “It is surely the king of Israel.” So they turned to fight against him. And Jehoshaphat cried out.
  246. They answered him, “He wore a garment of hair, with a belt of leather about his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.”
  247. And Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I to do with you? Go to the prophets of your father and to the prophets of your mother.” But the king of Israel said to him, “No; it is the Lord who has called these three kings to give them into the hand of Moab.”
  248. And he said, “Why will you go to him today? It is neither new moon nor Sabbath.” She said, “All is well.”
  249. But his servants came near and said to him, “My father, it is a great word the prophet has spoken to you; will you not do it? Has he actually said to you, ‘Wash, and be clean’?”
  250. And when he departed from there, he met Jehonadab the son of Rechab coming to meet him. And he greeted him and said to him, “Is your heart true to my heart as mine is to yours?” And Jehonadab answered, “It is.” Jehu said, “If it is, give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand. And Jehu took him up with him into the chariot.
  251. while their inhabitants, shorn of strength, are dismayed and confounded, and have become like plants of the field and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops, blighted before it is grown.
  252. And Hezekiah answered, “It is an easy thing for the shadow to lengthen ten steps. Rather let the shadow go back ten steps.”
  253. Then he said, “What is that monument that I see?” And the men of the city told him, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and predicted these things that you have done against the altar at Bethel.”
  254. Josiah Restores the Passover

    And the king commanded all the people, “Keep the Passover to the Lord your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”
  255. “Go and tell my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord: It is not you who will build me a house to dwell in.
  256. Now you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue forever before you, for it is you, O Lord, who have blessed, and it is blessed forever.”
  257. And God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it, but as he was about to destroy it, the Lord saw, and he relented from the calamity. And he said to the angel who was working destruction, “It is enough; now stay your hand.” And the angel of the Lord was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
  258. And David said to God, “Was it not I who gave command to number the people? It is I who have sinned and done great evil. But these sheep, what have they done? Please let your hand, O Lord my God, be against me and against my father's house. But do not let the plague be on your people.”
  259. He said to me, ‘It is Solomon your son who shall build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
  260. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.
  261. Nevertheless, it is not you who shall build the house, but your son who shall be born to you shall build the house for my name.’
  262. As soon as the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat, they said, “It is the king of Israel.” So they turned to fight against him. And Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him; God drew them away from him.
  263. And Jehoiada posted watchmen for the house of the Lord under the direction of the Levitical priests and the Levites whom David had organized to be in charge of the house of the Lord, to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, as it is written in the Law of Moses, with rejoicing and with singing, according to the order of David.
  264. and they withstood King Uzziah and said to him, “It is not for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord, but for the priests, the sons of Aaron, who are consecrated to burn incense. Go out of the sanctuary, for you have done wrong, and it will bring you no honor from the Lord God.”
  265. Now it is in my heart to make a covenant with the Lord, the God of Israel, in order that his fierce anger may turn away from us.
  266. The contribution of the king from his own possessions was for the burnt offerings: the burnt offerings of morning and evening, and the burnt offerings for the Sabbaths, the new moons, and the appointed feasts, as it is written in the Law of the Lord.
  267. And they set aside the burnt offerings that they might distribute them according to the groupings of the fathers' houses of the lay people, to offer to the Lord, as it is written in the Book of Moses. And so they did with the bulls.
  268. Then arose Jeshua the son of Jozadak, with his fellow priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel with his kinsmen, and they built the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings on it, as it is written in the Law of Moses the man of God.
  269. And they kept the Feast of Booths, as it is written, and offered the daily burnt offerings by number according to the rule, as each day required,
  270. Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not fitting for us to witness the king's dishonor, therefore we send and inform the king,
  271. Be it known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the great God. It is being built with huge stones, and timber is laid in the walls. This work goes on diligently and prospers in their hands.
  272. Then this Sheshbazzar came and laid the foundations of the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and from that time until now it has been in building, and it is not yet finished.’
  273. And they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their divisions, for the service of God at Jerusalem, as it is written in the Book of Moses.
  274. From the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great guilt. And for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering, and to utter shame, as it is today.
  275. which you commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land that you are entering, to take possession of it, is a land impure with the impurity of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations that have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness.
  276. O Lord, the God of Israel, you are just, for we are left a remnant that has escaped, as it is today. Behold, we are before you in our guilt, for none can stand before you because of this.”
  277. Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it.”
  278. Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, “It is so; we must do as you have said.
  279. But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open. Nor is this a task for one day or for two, for we have greatly transgressed in this matter.
  280. Now our flesh is as the flesh of our brothers, our children are as their children. Yet we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but it is not in our power to help it, for other men have our fields and our vineyards.”
  281. In it was written, “It is reported among the nations, and Geshem also says it, that you and the Jews intend to rebel; that is why you are building the wall. And according to these reports you wish to become their king.
  282. and that they should proclaim it and publish it in all their towns and in Jerusalem, “Go out to the hills and bring branches of olive, wild olive, myrtle, palm, and other leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.”
  283. and performed signs and wonders against Pharaoh and all his servants and all the people of his land, for you knew that they acted arrogantly against our fathers. And you made a name for yourself, as it is to this day.
  284. We, the priests, the Levites, and the people, have likewise cast lots for the wood offering, to bring it into the house of our God, according to our fathers' houses, at times appointed, year by year, to burn on the altar of the Lord our God, as it is written in the Law.
  285. also to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God, the firstborn of our sons and of our cattle, as it is written in the Law, and the firstborn of our herds and of our flocks;
  286. and to bring the first of our dough, and our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the wine and the oil, to the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and to bring to the Levites the tithes from our ground, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes in all our towns where we labor.
  287. So when the decree made by the king is proclaimed throughout all his kingdom, for it is vast, all women will give honor to their husbands, high and low alike.”
  288. Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, “There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the peoples in all the provinces of your kingdom. Their laws are different from those of every other people, and they do not keep the king's laws, so that it is not to the king's profit to tolerate them.
  289. “Go, gather all the Jews to be found in Susa, and hold a fast on my behalf, and do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my young women will also fast as you do. Then I will go to the king, though it is against the law, and if I perish, I perish.”
  290. Behold, this we have searched out; it is true. Hear, and know it for your good.”
  291. When they melt, they disappear; when it is hot, they vanish from their place.
  292. “Truly I know that it is so: But how can a man be in the right before God?
  293. If it is a contest of strength, behold, he is mighty! If it is a matter of justice, who can summon him?

  298. yet his food is turned in his stomach; it is the venom of cobras within him.
  299. It is drawn forth and comes out of his body; the glittering point comes out of his gallbladder; terrors come upon him.
  300. For when they are humbled you say, ‘It is because of pride’; but he saves the lowly.
  301. The murderer rises before it is light, that he may kill the poor and needy, and in the night he is like a thief.
  302. If it is not so, who will prove me a liar and show that there is nothing in what I say?”
  303. If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword, and his descendants have not enough bread.
  304. As for the earth, out of it comes bread, but underneath it is turned up as by fire.
  305. Man does not know its worth, and it is not found in the land of the living.
  306. The deep says, ‘It is not in me,’ and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
  307. It is hidden from the eyes of all living and concealed from the birds of the air.
  308. But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.
  309. It is not the old who are wise, nor the aged who understand what is right.
  310. “Do you think this to be just? Do you say, ‘It is my right before God,’
  311. “And now no one looks on the light when it is bright in the skies, when the wind has passed and cleared them.
  312. It is changed like clay under the seal, and its features stand out like a garment.
  313. For it is you who light my lamp; the Lord my God lightens my darkness.
  314. I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted within my breast;
  315. For your name's sake, O Lord, pardon my guilt, for it is great.
  316. When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.
  317. But for you, O Lord, do I wait; it is you, O Lord my God, who will answer.
  318. I am mute; I do not open my mouth, for it is you who have done it.
  319. Then I said, “Behold, I have come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me:
  320. I will thank you forever, because you have done it. I will wait for your name, for it is good, in the presence of the godly.
  321. With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you; I will give thanks to your name, O Lord, for it is good.
  322. For it is not an enemy who taunts me— then I could bear it; it is not an adversary who deals insolently with me— then I could hide from him.
  323. But it is you, a man, my equal, my companion, my familiar friend.
  324. With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes.
  325. For it is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that dishonor has covered my face.
  326. But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.
  327. When the earth totters, and all its inhabitants, it is I who keep steady its pillars. Selah
  328. but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another.
  329. For it is a statute for Israel, a rule of the God of Jacob.
  330. For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night.
  331. How Great Are Your Works

    It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High;
  332. Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
  333. You will arise and have pity on Zion; it is the time to favor her; the appointed time has come.
  334. for the wind passes over it, and it is gone, and its place knows it no more.
  335. You make darkness, and it is night, when all the beasts of the forest creep about.
  336. With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes.
  337. It is well with the man who deals generously and lends; who conducts his affairs with justice.
  338. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.
  339. It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.
  340. This is the Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
  341. It is good for me that I was afflicted, that I might learn your statutes.

    Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.
  343. Your commandment makes me wiser than my enemies, for it is ever with me.

  346. When Brothers Dwell in Unity

    A Song of Ascents. Of David.

    Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!
  347. It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes!
  348. It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life forevermore.
  349. Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good; sing to his name, for it is pleasant!
  350. He it is who makes the clouds rise at the end of the earth, who makes lightnings for the rain and brings forth the wind from his storehouses.
  351. It is he who remembered us in our low estate, for his steadfast love endures forever;
  352. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.
  353. Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil for my head; let my head not refuse it. Yet my prayer is continually against their evil deeds.
  354. He Heals the Brokenhearted

    Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God; for it is pleasant, and a song of praise is fitting.
  355. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it.
  356. By the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is overthrown.
  357. The fallow ground of the poor would yield much food, but it is swept away through injustice.
  358. To make an apt answer is a joy to a man, and a word in season, how good it is!
  359. It is an abomination to kings to do evil, for the throne is established by righteousness.
  360. It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud.
  361. Gray hair is a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life.
  362. It is not good to be partial to the wicked or to deprive the righteous of justice.
  363. If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.
  364. It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury, much less for a slave to rule over princes.
  365. Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
  366. Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.
  367. Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise.
  368. It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.
  369. It is a snare to say rashly, “It is holy,” and to reflect only after making vows.
  370. It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.
  371. When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.
  372. It is better to live in a desert land than with a quarrelsome and fretful woman.
  373. When your eyes light on it, it is gone, for suddenly it sprouts wings, flying like an eagle toward heaven.
  374. Do not look at wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup and goes down smoothly.
  375. By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established;
  376. My son, eat honey, for it is good, and the drippings of the honeycomb are sweet to your taste.
  377. It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.
  378. for it is better to be told, “Come up here,” than to be put lower in the presence of a noble. What your eyes have seen
  379. It is better to live in a corner of the housetop than in a house shared with a quarrelsome wife.
  380. It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one's own glory.
  381. Many seek the face of a ruler, but it is from the Lord that a man gets justice.
  382. the lizard you can take in your hands, yet it is in kings' palaces.
  383. It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to take strong drink,
  384. She rises while it is yet night and provides food for her household and portions for her maidens.
  385. Is there a thing of which it is said, “See, this is new”? It has been already in the ages before us.
  386. And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.
  387. I said of laughter, “It is mad,” and of pleasure, “What use is it?”
  388. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
  389. a man to whom God gives wealth, possessions, and honor, so that he lacks nothing of all that he desires, yet God does not give him power to enjoy them, but a stranger enjoys them. This is vanity; it is a grievous evil.
  390. Whatever has come to be has already been named, and it is known what man is, and that he is not able to dispute with one stronger than he.
  391. It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for this is the end of all mankind, and the living will lay it to heart.
  392. It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools.
  393. Say not, “Why were the former days better than these?” For it is not from wisdom that you ask this.
  394. It is good that you should take hold of this, and from that withhold not your hand, for the one who fears God shall come out from both of them.
  395. Death Comes to All

    But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God. Whether it is love or hate, man does not know; both are before him.
  396. It is the same for all, since the same event happens to the righteous and the wicked, to the good and the evil, to the clean and the unclean, to him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As the good one is, so is the sinner, and he who swears is as he who shuns an oath.
  397. If the serpent bites before it is charmed, there is no advantage to the charmer.
  398. Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun.
  399. Behold, it is the litter of Solomon! Around it are sixty mighty men, some of the mighty men of Israel,
  400. Your country lies desolate; your cities are burned with fire; in your very presence foreigners devour your land; it is desolate, as overthrown by foreigners.
  401. The Lord will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses.
  402. And though a tenth remain in it, it will be burned again, like a terebinth or an oak, whose stump remains when it is felled.” The holy seed is its stump.
  403. To the teaching and to the testimony! If they will not speak according to this word, it is because they have no dawn.
  404. But he does not so intend, and his heart does not so think; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few;
  405. And the land of Judah will become a terror to the Egyptians. Everyone to whom it is mentioned will fear because of the purpose that the Lord of hosts has purposed against them.
  406. An Oracle Concerning Tyre and Sidon

    The oracle concerning Tyre. Wail, O ships of Tarshish, for Tyre is laid waste, without house or harbor! From the land of Cyprus it is revealed to them.
  407. and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of the rich valley, will be like a first-ripe fig before the summer: when someone sees it, he swallows it as soon as it is in his hand.
  408. For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.”
  409. And the vision of all this has become to you like the words of a book that is sealed. When men give it to one who can read, saying, “Read this,” he says, “I cannot, for it is sealed.”
  410. For a burning place has long been prepared; indeed, for the king it is made ready, its pyre made deep and wide, with fire and wood in abundance; the breath of the Lord, like a stream of sulfur, kindles it.
  411. and your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers; as locusts leap, it is leapt upon.
  412. The Lord has a sword; it is sated with blood; it is gorged with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats, with the fat of the kidneys of rams. For the Lord has a sacrifice in Bozrah, a great slaughter in the land of Edom.
  413. while their inhabitants, shorn of strength, are dismayed and confounded, and have become like plants of the field and like tender grass, like grass on the housetops, blighted before it is grown.
  414. It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in;
  415. The craftsman strengthens the goldsmith, and he who smooths with the hammer him who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, “It is good”; and they strengthen it with nails so that it cannot be moved.
  416. For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, “Fear not, I am the one who helps you.”
  417. All the nations gather together, and the peoples assemble. Who among them can declare this, and show us the former things? Let them bring their witnesses to prove them right, and let them hear and say, It is true.
  418. I will give you the treasures of darkness and the hoards in secret places, that you may know that it is I, the Lord, the God of Israel, who call you by your name.
  419. I bring near my righteousness; it is not far off, and my salvation will not delay; I will put salvation in Zion, for Israel my glory.”
  420. he says: “It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to bring back the preserved of Israel; I will make you as a light for the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.”
  421. Therefore my people shall know my name. Therefore in that day they shall know that it is I who speak; here I am.”
  422. If anyone stirs up strife, it is not from me; whoever stirs up strife with you shall fall because of you.
  423. You were wearied with the length of your way, but you did not say, “It is hopeless”; you found new life for your strength, and so you were not faint.
  424. We all growl like bears; we moan and moan like doves; we hope for justice, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far from us.
  425. The Lord's Day of Vengeance

    Who is this who comes from Edom, in crimsoned garments from Bozrah, he who is splendid in his apparel, marching in the greatness of his strength? “It is I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.”
  426. Behold, it is written before me: “I will not keep silent, but I will repay; I will indeed repay into their lap
  427. Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word: “Your brothers who hate you and cast you out for my name's sake have said, ‘Let the Lord be glorified, that we may see your joy’; but it is they who shall be put to shame.
  428. Your evil will chastise you, and your apostasy will reprove you. Know and see that it is evil and bitter for you to forsake the Lord your God; the fear of me is not in you, declares the Lord God of hosts.
  429. Keep your feet from going unshod and your throat from thirst. But you said, ‘It is hopeless, for I have loved foreigners, and after them I will go.’
  430. a wind too full for this comes for me. Now it is I who speak in judgment upon them.”
  431. Your ways and your deeds have brought this upon you. This is your doom, and it is bitter; it has reached your very heart.”
  432. Behold, I am bringing against you a nation from afar, O house of Israel, declares the Lord. It is an enduring nation; it is an ancient nation, a nation whose language you do not know, nor can you understand what they say.
  433. And you shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that did not obey the voice of the Lord their God, and did not accept discipline; truth has perished; it is cut off from their lips.
  434. It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
  435. I know, O Lord, that the way of man is not in himself, that it is not in man who walks to direct his steps.
  436. And if you say in your heart, ‘Why have these things come upon me?’ it is for the greatness of your iniquity that your skirts are lifted up and you suffer violence.
  437. The Sin of Judah

    “The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron; with a point of diamond it is engraved on the tablet of their heart, and on the horns of their altars,
  438. making their land a horror, a thing to be hissed at forever. Everyone who passes by it is horrified and shakes his head.
  439. It is I who by my great power and my outstretched arm have made the earth, with the men and animals that are on the earth, and I give it to whomever it seems right to me.
  440. For it is a lie that they are prophesying to you, with the result that you will be removed far from your land, and I will drive you out, and you will perish.
  441. Do not listen to the words of the prophets who are saying to you, ‘You shall not serve the king of Babylon,’ for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you.
  442. Then I spoke to the priests and to all this people, saying, “Thus says the Lord: Do not listen to the words of your prophets who are prophesying to you, saying, ‘Behold, the vessels of the Lord's house will now shortly be brought back from Babylon,’ for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you.
  443. for it is a lie that they are prophesying to you in my name; I did not send them, declares the Lord.
  444. Alas! That day is so great there is none like it; it is a time of distress for Jacob; yet he shall be saved out of it.
  445. For I will restore health to you, and your wounds I will heal, declares the Lord, because they have called you an outcast: ‘It is Zion, for whom no one cares!’
  446. ‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.
  447. They Shall Be My People; I Will Be Their God

    “Now therefore thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, concerning this city of which you say, ‘It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, by famine, and by pestilence’:
  448. Fields shall be bought in this land of which you are saying, ‘It is a desolation, without man or beast; it is given into the hand of the Chaldeans.’
  449. “Thus says the Lord: In this place of which you say, ‘It is a waste without man or beast,’ in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem that are desolate, without man or inhabitant or beast, there shall be heard again
  450. And Jeremiah said, “It is a lie; I am not deserting to the Chaldeans.” But Irijah would not listen to him, and seized Jeremiah and brought him to the officials.
  451. Whether it is good or bad, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God to whom we are sending you, that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”
  452. The Lord could no longer bear your evil deeds and the abominations that you committed. Therefore your land has become a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is this day.
  453. It is because you made offerings and because you sinned against the Lord and did not obey the voice of the Lord or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his testimonies that this disaster has happened to you, as at this day.”
  454. They shall cut down her forest, declares the Lord, though it is impenetrable, because they are more numerous than locusts; they are without number.
  455. Judgment on Moab

    Concerning Moab. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Woe to Nebo, for it is laid waste! Kiriathaim is put to shame, it is taken; the fortress is put to shame and broken down;
  456. Moab is put to shame, for it is broken; wail and cry! Tell it beside the Arnon, that Moab is laid waste.
  457. How it is broken! How they wail! How Moab has turned his back in shame! So Moab has become a derision and a horror to all that are around him.”
  458. A drought against her waters, that they may be dried up! For it is a land of images, and they are mad over idols.
  459. It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.
  460. For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: The daughter of Babylon is like a threshing floor at the time when it is trodden; yet a little while and the time of her harvest will come.”
  461. “Look, O Lord, for I am in distress; my stomach churns; my heart is wrung within me, because I have been very rebellious. In the street the sword bereaves; in the house it is like death.
  462. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.
  463. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.
  464. Let him sit alone in silence when it is laid on him;
  465. Behold, it is given to the fire for fuel. When the fire has consumed both ends of it, and the middle of it is charred, is it useful for anything?
  466. Behold, when it was whole, it was used for nothing. How much less, when the fire has consumed it and it is charred, can it ever be used for anything!
  467. Behold, it is planted; will it thrive? Will it not utterly wither when the east wind strikes it—wither away on the bed where it sprouted?”
  468. Therefore thus says the Lord God: As I live, surely it is my oath that he despised, and my covenant that he broke. I will return it upon his head.
  469. Now it is planted in the wilderness, in a dry and thirsty land.
  470. And when they say to you, ‘Why do you groan?’ you shall say, ‘Because of the news that it is coming. Every heart will melt, and all hands will be feeble; every spirit will faint, and all knees will be weak as water. Behold, it is coming, and it will be fulfilled,’” declares the Lord God.
  471. So the sword is given to be polished, that it may be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished to be given into the hand of the slayer.
  472. Cry out and wail, son of man, for it is against my people. It is against all the princes of Israel. They are delivered over to the sword with my people. Strike therefore upon your thigh.
  473. “As for you, son of man, prophesy. Clap your hands and let the sword come down twice, yes, three times, the sword for those to be slain. It is the sword for the great slaughter, which surrounds them,
  474. that their hearts may melt, and many stumble. At all their gates I have given the glittering sword. Ah, it is made like lightning; it is taken up for slaughter.
  475. “And you, son of man, prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord God concerning the Ammonites and concerning their reproach; say, A sword, a sword is drawn for the slaughter. It is polished to consume and to flash like lightning—
  476. “Yet your people say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just,’ when it is their own way that is not just.
  477. I Will Put My Spirit Within You

    “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: It is not for your sake, O house of Israel, that I am about to act, but for the sake of my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations to which you came.
  478. It is not for your sake that I will act, declares the Lord God; let that be known to you. Be ashamed and confounded for your ways, O house of Israel.
  479. Behold, it is coming and it will be brought about, declares the Lord God. That is the day of which I have spoken.
  480. And he said to me, “Son of man, thus says the Lord God: These are the ordinances for the altar: On the day when it is erected for offering burnt offerings upon it and for throwing blood against it,
  481. of the land. It is to be his property in Israel. And my princes shall no more oppress my people, but they shall let the house of Israel have the land according to their tribes.
  482. “Thus says the Lord God: If the prince makes a gift to any of his sons as his inheritance, it shall belong to his sons. It is their property by inheritance.
  483. But if he makes a gift out of his inheritance to one of his servants, it shall be his to the year of liberty. Then it shall revert to the prince; surely it is his inheritance—it shall belong to his sons.
  484. They shall not sell or exchange any of it. They shall not alienate this choice portion of the land, for it is holy to the Lord.
  485. it is you, O king, who have grown and become strong. Your greatness has grown and reaches to heaven, and your dominion to the ends of the earth.
  486. this is the interpretation, O king: It is a decree of the Most High, which has come upon my lord the king,
  487. While the words were still in the king's mouth, there fell a voice from heaven, “O King Nebuchadnezzar, to you it is spoken: The kingdom has departed from you,
  488. Then these men came by agreement to the king and said to the king, “Know, O king, that it is a law of the Medes and Persians that no injunction or ordinance that the king establishes can be changed.”
  489. As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this calamity has come upon us; yet we have not entreated the favor of the Lord our God, turning from our iniquities and gaining insight by your truth.
  490. They are all adulterers; they are like a heated oven whose baker ceases to stir the fire, from the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
  491. For it is from Israel; a craftsman made it; it is not God. The calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces.
  492. Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap steadfast love; break up your fallow ground, for it is the time to seek the Lord, that he may come and rain righteousness upon you.
  493. And now they sin more and more, and make for themselves metal images, idols skillfully made of their silver, all of them the work of craftsmen. It is said of them, “Those who offer human sacrifice kiss calves!”
  494. O Ephraim, what have I to do with idols? It is I who answer and look after you. I am like an evergreen cypress; from me comes your fruit.
  495. Awake, you drunkards, and weep, and wail, all you drinkers of wine, because of the sweet wine, for it is cut off from your mouth.
  496. The Day of the Lord

    Blow a trumpet in Zion; sound an alarm on my holy mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming; it is near,
  497. Therefore he who is prudent will keep silent in such a time, for it is an evil time.
  498. Let Justice Roll Down

    Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord! Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness, and not light,
  499. but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.”
  500. He said to them, “Pick me up and hurl me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you, for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.”
