    Now the snake was more able to fool others than any animal of the field which the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God say that you should not eat from any tree in the garden?”

  4. Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The snake fooled me, and I ate.”
  5. Then the Lord God said to the snake, “Because you have done this, you will be hated and will suffer more than all cattle, and more than every animal of the field. You will go on your stomach and you will eat dust all the days of your life.
  6. Dan will be a snake in the way, a snake in the road, that bites the horse’s heels so that the man falls off.
  7. Then the Lord said, “Throw it on the ground.” So Moses threw it on the ground, and it became a snake. And Moses ran from it.
  8. “When Pharaoh says to you, ‘Prove yourselves by doing a powerful work,’ then you say to Aaron, ‘Take your special stick and throw it down in front of Pharaoh so that it will become a snake.’”
  9. So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh. They did just as the Lord had told them. Aaron threw his stick down in front of Pharaoh and his servants and it became a snake.
  10. For each one threw down his stick and it became a snake. But Aaron’s special stick ate their sticks.
  11. Go to Pharaoh in the morning when he is going out to the water. Wait for him beside the Nile River. Take in your hand the special stick that became a snake.
  12. The Brass Snake

    Then they traveled from Mount Hor by the way of the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people wanted to give up because of the long way.
  13. Then the Lord sent snakes with a bite of poison among the people. They bit the people, so that many people of Israel died.
  14. So the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, because we have spoken against the Lord and you. Pray to the Lord, that He will take away the snakes from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
  15. The Lord said to Moses, “Make a special snake and put it up on a long piece of wood. Everyone who is bitten will live when he looks at it.”
  16. So Moses made a brass snake and put it up on the long piece of wood. If a snake bit any man, he would live when he looked at the brass snake.
  17. He led you through the big desert that brought fear with its poisonous snakes and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water. He brought you water out of hard rock.
  18. Their wine is the poison of snakes that kill.
  19. He took away the high places. He broke down the holy pillars used in worship and cut down the Asherah. And he broke in pieces the brass snake that Moses had made. For until those days the people of Israel burned special perfume to it. It was called Nehushtan.
  20. Yet his food in his stomach is changed to the poison of snakes inside him.
  21. He will drink the poison of snakes. The snake’s tongue will kill him.
  22. By His breath the heavens are made beautiful. His hand cut through the snake as it tried to get away.
  23. Their poison is like the poison of a snake. They are like a cobra that cannot or will not listen.
  24. You will walk upon the lion and the snake. You will crush under your feet the young lion and the snake.
  25. They make their tongues sharp like a snake’s. And the poison of a snake is under their lips.
