But the brothers said, “·We will not allow our sister to be treated [Should they treat our sister…?] like a ·prostitute [whore].”

So she took off the clothes that showed she was a widow and covered her face with a veil ·to hide who she was [^Land wrapped herself up; ^Cperhaps indicating a woman was a prostitute; see v. 15]. Then she sat down by the gate of Enaim on the road to Timnah. She did this because Judah’s younger son Shelah had grown up, but Judah had not ·made plans for her to marry him [given her to him as a wife].

When Judah saw her, he thought she was a prostitute, because she had covered her face with a veil.

He asked some of the people at the town of Enaim, “Where is the prostitute [^Cperhaps indicating a temple prostitute connected to a fertility religion] who was here by the road?” They answered, “There has never been a prostitute here.”

So he went back to Judah and said, “I could not find the woman, and the people who lived there said, ‘There has never been a prostitute here.’ ”

About three months later someone told Judah, “Tamar, your daughter-in-law, is guilty of acting like a prostitute, and now she ·is pregnant [has conceived].” Then Judah said, “Bring her out and let her be burned to death.”

The Lord was with Joseph [^Cindicating a covenant relationship], and he ·became a successful man [prospered]. He lived in the house of his master, Potiphar the Egyptian.

Potiphar saw that the Lord was with Joseph and that the Lord made Joseph ·successful [prosperous] in everything he did.

The warden paid no attention to anything that was in Joseph’s care because the Lord was with Joseph and made him ·successful [prosper] in everything he did.

They must not offer any more sacrifices to their goat idols [^Cgoat images representing demons; 2 Chr. 11:15; Is. 13:21; 34:14], which they have chased like prostitutes [^Cspiritual infidelity is often likened to marital infidelity; Hos. 1:2]. These ·rules [statutes; ordinances; requirements] will continue for people ·from now on [^Lthroughout their generations].’

“‘Do not ·dishonor [profane] your daughter by making her become a prostitute. If you do this, the country will be ·filled [^Lprostituted] with all kinds of sin.

But I will ·be [^Lset my face] against him and his family, and I will cut him off from his people. I will do this to anyone who follows him in ·being unfaithful to me [^Lprostituting himself] by worshiping Molech.

“‘I will ·be [^Lset my face] against anyone who ·goes [turns] to mediums and ·fortune-tellers [wizards] for advice, because that person is ·being unfaithful to [^Lprostituting himself against] me. So I will cut him off from his people.

“‘A priest must not marry ·a defiled prostitute [or a prostitute or a defiled woman] or a divorced woman, because he is holy to his God.

“‘If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by becoming a prostitute, she ·shames [defiles] her father. She must be burned with fire.

He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or ·a defiled prostitute [or a defiled woman or a prostitute; v. 7]. He must marry a virgin from his own people

If there is not a ·close relative to buy the land back [redeemer], but if the person ·makes enough money to be able to buy it back [prospers and he is able to redeem it],

Israel Worships Baal at Peor

While the people of Israel were still camped at ·Acacia [^LShittim], the men began ·sinning sexually [to prostitute themselves] with Moabite women [^Con the advice of Balaam who found another way to get his money; 31:16].

the girl must be brought to the door of her father’s house. Then the men of the town must put her to death by ·throwing stones at [stoning] her. She has done a ·disgraceful [shameful] thing in Israel by ·having sexual relations before she was married [^Lacting like a prostitute in the house of her father]. You must ·get rid of [banish; purge] the evil among you.

Don’t ·wish for [seek] their peace or ·success [prosperity] as long as you live.

No Israelite ·man [^Lson] or ·woman [^Ldaughter] must ever become a ·temple [sacred] prostitute.

Do not bring ·a male or female prostitute’s pay [^Lthe pay of a prostitute or the price of a “dog”; ^C“dog” is probably a reference to a male temple prostitute] to the ·Temple [^Lhouse] of the Lord your God to pay what you have ·promised [vowed] to the Lord, because the Lord your God ·hates [detests] ·prostitution [^Lboth of them; ^Cmale and female temple prostitution].

Just as the Lord was once ·happy [pleased; delighted] with you and gave you ·good things [prosperity] and made you grow in number, so then the Lord will be ·happy [pleased; delighted] to ruin and destroy you, and you will be removed from the land you are entering to take as your ·own [possession].

You must carefully obey everything in this ·agreement [covenant; treaty] so that you will ·succeed [prosper] in everything you do.

The Lord your God will make you ·successful [prosperous] in ·everything you do [^Lall the work of your hands]. ·You will have many children, your cattle will have many calves, and your fields will produce good crops [^L…in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your land], because the Lord will again be ·happy [pleased; delighted] with you, just as he was with your ·ancestors [fathers].
