  11. But Moses said to the Lord, “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either in the past or since you have spoken to your servant, but I am slow of speech and of tongue.”
  12. “You shall no longer give the people straw to make bricks, as in the past; let them go and gather straw for themselves.
  13. But the number of bricks that they made in the past you shall impose on them, you shall by no means reduce it, for they are idle. Therefore they cry, ‘Let us go and offer sacrifice to our God.’
  14. And the foremen of the people of Israel, whom Pharaoh's taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and were asked, “Why have you not done all your task of making bricks today and yesterday, as in the past?”
  15. But if the ox has been accustomed to gore in the past, and its owner has been warned but has not kept it in, and it kills a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death.
  16. Or if it is known that the ox has been accustomed to gore in the past, and its owner has not kept it in, he shall repay ox for ox, and the dead beast shall be his.
  17. But the fields of pastureland belonging to their cities may not be sold, for that is their possession forever.
  18. “Command the people of Israel to give to the Levites some of the inheritance of their possession as cities for them to dwell in. And you shall give to the Levites pasturelands around the cities.
  19. The cities shall be theirs to dwell in, and their pasturelands shall be for their cattle and for their livestock and for all their beasts.
  20. The pasturelands of the cities, which you shall give to the Levites, shall reach from the wall of the city outward a thousand cubits all around.
  21. And you shall measure, outside the city, on the east side two thousand cubits, and on the south side two thousand cubits, and on the west side two thousand cubits, and on the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the middle. This shall belong to them as pastureland for their cities.
  22. All the cities that you give to the Levites shall be forty-eight, with their pasturelands.
  23. The Lord Alone Is God

    “For ask now of the days that are past, which were before you, since the day that God created man on the earth, and ask from one end of heaven to the other, whether such a great thing as this has ever happened or was ever heard of.
  24. that the manslayer might flee there, anyone who kills his neighbor unintentionally, without being at enmity with him in time past; he may flee to one of these cities and save his life:
  25. “This is the provision for the manslayer, who by fleeing there may save his life. If anyone kills his neighbor unintentionally without having hated him in the past
  26. lest the avenger of blood in hot anger pursue the manslayer and overtake him, because the way is long, and strike him fatally, though the man did not deserve to die, since he had not hated his neighbor in the past.
  27. For the people of Joseph were two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. And no portion was given to the Levites in the land, but only cities to dwell in, with their pasturelands for their livestock and their substance.
  28. And if the avenger of blood pursues him, they shall not give up the manslayer into his hand, because he struck his neighbor unknowingly, and did not hate him in the past.
  29. Cities and Pasturelands Allotted to Levi

    Then the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites came to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua the son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers' houses of the tribes of the people of Israel.
  30. And they said to them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, “The Lord commanded through Moses that we be given cities to dwell in, along with their pasturelands for our livestock.”
  31. So by command of the Lord the people of Israel gave to the Levites the following cities and pasturelands out of their inheritance.
  32. These cities and their pasturelands the people of Israel gave by lot to the Levites, as the Lord had commanded through Moses.
  33. They gave them Kiriath-arba (Arba being the father of Anak), that is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, along with the pasturelands around it.
  34. And to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pasturelands, Libnah with its pasturelands,
  35. Jattir with its pasturelands, Eshtemoa with its pasturelands,
  36. Holon with its pasturelands, Debir with its pasturelands,
  37. Ain with its pasturelands, Juttah with its pasturelands, Beth-shemesh with its pasturelands—nine cities out of these two tribes;
  38. then out of the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pasturelands, Geba with its pasturelands,
  39. Anathoth with its pasturelands, and Almon with its pasturelands—four cities.
  40. The cities of the descendants of Aaron, the priests, were in all thirteen cities with their pasturelands.
  41. To them were given Shechem, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands,
  42. Kibzaim with its pasturelands, Beth-horon with its pasturelands—four cities;
  43. and out of the tribe of Dan, Elteke with its pasturelands, Gibbethon with its pasturelands,
  44. Aijalon with its pasturelands, Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands—four cities;
  45. and out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Taanach with its pasturelands, and Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands—two cities.
  46. The cities of the clans of the rest of the Kohathites were ten in all with their pasturelands.
  47. And to the Gershonites, one of the clans of the Levites, were given out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with its pasturelands, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Beeshterah with its pasturelands—two cities;
  48. and out of the tribe of Issachar, Kishion with its pasturelands, Daberath with its pasturelands,
  49. Jarmuth with its pasturelands, En-gannim with its pasturelands—four cities;
  50. and out of the tribe of Asher, Mishal with its pasturelands, Abdon with its pasturelands,

  54. And to the rest of the Levites, the Merarite clans, were given out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with its pasturelands, Kartah with its pasturelands,
  55. Dimnah with its pasturelands, Nahalal with its pasturelands—four cities;
  56. and out of the tribe of Reuben, Bezer with its pasturelands, Jahaz with its pasturelands,
  57. Kedemoth with its pasturelands, and Mephaath with its pasturelands—four cities;
  58. and out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its pasturelands, the city of refuge for the manslayer, Mahanaim with its pasturelands,
  59. Heshbon with its pasturelands, Jazer with its pasturelands—four cities in all.
  60. The cities of the Levites in the midst of the possession of the people of Israel were in all forty-eight cities with their pasturelands.
  61. These cities each had its pasturelands around it. So it was with all these cities.
  62. Then Samuel said, “Bring here to me Agag the king of the Amalekites.” And Agag came to him cheerfully. Agag said, “Surely the bitterness of death is past.”
  63. And Abner conferred with the elders of Israel, saying, “For some time past you have been seeking David as king over you.

  68. They journeyed to the entrance of Gedor, to the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks,
  69. where they found rich, good pasture, and the land was very broad, quiet, and peaceful, for the former inhabitants there belonged to Ham.
  70. These, registered by name, came in the days of Hezekiah, king of Judah, and destroyed their tents and the Meunites who were found there, and marked them for destruction to this day, and settled in their place, because there was pasture there for their flocks.
  71. and they lived in Gilead, in Bashan and in its towns, and in all the pasturelands of Sharon to their limits.
  72. to them they gave Hebron in the land of Judah and its surrounding pasturelands,
  73. To the sons of Aaron they gave the cities of refuge: Hebron, Libnah with its pasturelands, Jattir, Eshtemoa with its pasturelands,
  74. Hilen with its pasturelands, Debir with its pasturelands,
  75. Ashan with its pasturelands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasturelands;
  76. and from the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon, Geba with its pasturelands, Alemeth with its pasturelands, and Anathoth with its pasturelands. All their cities throughout their clans were thirteen.
  77. So the people of Israel gave the Levites the cities with their pasturelands.
  78. They were given the cities of refuge: Shechem with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands,
  79. Jokmeam with its pasturelands, Beth-horon with its pasturelands,
  80. Aijalon with its pasturelands, Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands,

  89. and beyond the Jordan at Jericho, on the east side of the Jordan, out of the tribe of Reuben: Bezer in the wilderness with its pasturelands, Jahzah with its pasturelands,
  90. Kedemoth with its pasturelands, and Mephaath with its pasturelands;
  91. and out of the tribe of Gad: Ramoth in Gilead with its pasturelands, Mahanaim with its pasturelands,
  92. Heshbon with its pasturelands, and Jazer with its pasturelands.
  93. And Phinehas the son of Eleazar was the chief officer over them in time past; the Lord was with him.
  94. In times past, even when Saul was king, it was you who led out and brought in Israel. And the Lord your God said to you, ‘You shall be shepherd of my people Israel, and you shall be prince over my people Israel.’”
  95. And David said to all the assembly of Israel, “If it seems good to you and from the Lord our God, let us send abroad to our brothers who remain in all the lands of Israel, as well as to the priests and Levites in the cities that have pasturelands, that they may be gathered to us.

  139. Like a stubborn heifer, Israel is stubborn; can the Lord now feed them like a lamb in a broad pasture?
  140. How the beasts groan! The herds of cattle are perplexed because there is no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep suffer.
  141. To you, O Lord, I call. For fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and flame has burned all the trees of the field.
  142. Even the beasts of the field pant for you because the water brooks are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness.
