  1. The Passover

    The Lord spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt. He said,
  2. “Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover at the appointed time.
  3. So Moses told the Israelites to celebrate the Passover,
  4. But some of them could not celebrate the Passover on that day because they were ceremonially unclean on account of a dead body. So they came to Moses and Aaron that same day
  5. “Tell the Israelites: ‘When any of you or your descendants are unclean because of a dead body or are away on a journey, they are still to celebrate the Lord’s Passover,
  6. They must not leave any of it till morning or break any of its bones. When they celebrate the Passover, they must follow all the regulations.
  7. But if anyone who is ceremonially clean and not on a journey fails to celebrate the Passover, they must be cut off from their people for not presenting the Lord’s offering at the appointed time. They will bear the consequences of their sin.
  8. “‘A foreigner residing among you is also to celebrate the Lord’s Passover in accordance with its rules and regulations. You must have the same regulations for both the foreigner and the native-born.’”
  9. and said to the entire Israelite assembly, “The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good.
  10. Edom Denies Israel Passage

    Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, saying: “This is what your brother Israel says: You know about all the hardships that have come on us.
  11. Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”
  12. But Edom answered: “You may not pass through here; if you try, we will march out and attack you with the sword.”
  13. The Israelites replied: “We will go along the main road, and if we or our livestock drink any of your water, we will pay for it. We only want to pass through on foot—nothing else.”
  14. Again they answered: “You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them with a large and powerful army.
  15. “Let us pass through your country. We will not turn aside into any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the King’s Highway until we have passed through your territory.”
  16. But Sihon would not let Israel pass through his territory. He mustered his entire army and marched out into the wilderness against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought with Israel.
  17. The Passover

    “‘On the fourteenth day of the first month the Lord’s Passover is to be held.
  18. The Israelites set out from Rameses on the fifteenth day of the first month, the day after the Passover. They marched out defiantly in full view of all the Egyptians,
  19. They left Pi Hahiroth and passed through the sea into the desert, and when they had traveled for three days in the Desert of Etham, they camped at Marah.

  23. Give the people these orders: ‘You are about to pass through the territory of your relatives the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, but be very careful.
  24. Thirty-eight years passed from the time we left Kadesh Barnea until we crossed the Zered Valley. By then, that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the Lord had sworn to them.
