  1. When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance
  2. Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said. He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel.
  3. The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.”
  4. Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God.

  11. Make the altar hollow, out of boards. It is to be made just as you were shown on the mountain.
  12. The Golden Calf

    When the people saw that Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said, “Come, make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don’t know what has happened to him.”
  13. Why should the Egyptians say, ‘It was with evil intent that he brought them out, to kill them in the mountains and to wipe them off the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger; relent and do not bring disaster on your people.
  14. Moses turned and went down the mountain with the two tablets of the covenant law in his hands. They were inscribed on both sides, front and back.
  15. When Moses approached the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain.
  16. Be ready in the morning, and then come up on Mount Sinai. Present yourself to me there on top of the mountain.
  17. No one is to come with you or be seen anywhere on the mountain; not even the flocks and herds may graze in front of the mountain.”
  18. So they set out from the mountain of the Lord and traveled for three days. The ark of the covenant of the Lord went before them during those three days to find them a place to rest.
  19. Moses removed Aaron’s garments and put them on his son Eleazar. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain,
  20. Then Balaam spoke his message: “Balak brought me from Aram, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains. ‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me; come, denounce Israel.’
  21. Joshua to Succeed Moses

    Then the Lord said to Moses, “Go up this mountain in the Abarim Range and see the land I have given the Israelites.
  22. They left Almon Diblathaim and camped in the mountains of Abarim, near Nebo.
  23. They left the mountains of Abarim and camped on the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho.
  24. The Lord our God said to us at Horeb, “You have stayed long enough at this mountain.
  25. Break camp and advance into the hill country of the Amorites; go to all the neighboring peoples in the Arabah, in the mountains, in the western foothills, in the Negev and along the coast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the Euphrates.
