  7. John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus,
  8. “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting, or should we keep looking for someone else?”
  9. The crowd was amazed and asked, “Could it be that Jesus is the Son of David, the Messiah?”
  10. Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”
  11. Then he sternly warned the disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.
  12. Then his disciples asked him, “Why do the teachers of religious law insist that Elijah must return before the Messiah comes?”
  13. Whose Son Is the Messiah?

    Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question:
  14. “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They replied, “He is the son of David.”
  15. Jesus responded, “Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah ‘my Lord’? For David said,
  16. Since David called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”
  17. And don’t let anyone call you ‘Teacher,’ for you have only one teacher, the Messiah.
  18. for many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah.’ They will deceive many.
  19. “Then if anyone tells you, ‘Look, here is the Messiah,’ or ‘There he is,’ don’t believe it.
  20. For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and perform great signs and wonders so as to deceive, if possible, even God’s chosen ones.
  21. “So if someone tells you, ‘Look, the Messiah is out in the desert,’ don’t bother to go and look. Or, ‘Look, he is hiding here,’ don’t believe it!
  22. But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said to him, “I demand in the name of the living God—tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
  23. jeering, “Prophesy to us, you Messiah! Who hit you that time?”
  24. As the crowds gathered before Pilate’s house that morning, he asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you—Barabbas, or Jesus who is called the Messiah?”
  25. Pilate responded, “Then what should I do with Jesus who is called the Messiah?” They shouted back, “Crucify him!”
